Maiduguri - Nigeria says negotiations with Boko Haram continue for the release of the remaining Chibok schoolgirls who were kidnapped three years ago by the extremist group, shocking the world.

The government "has gone quite far with negotiations", Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Wednesday night.
He spoke shortly before Friday's three-year anniversary of the mass abduction of 276 schoolgirls from a village in the country's northeast. At least 195 of them remain captive.

Nigeria in October announced the release of 21 Chibok schoolgirls, saying for the first time that it had been negotiating with the extremist group, mediated by the Swiss government and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The government denied a ransom was paid and that it had freed some detained Boko Haram fighters in exchange for the girls.
At the time, officials said they were pressing on with negotiations and expected the release of a second group of 83 girls "very soon". No more have been freed.

Osinbajo indicated that Nigeria has faced some challenges in the latest negotiations but didn't give details, citing security reasons.
The failure of Nigeria's former government to act quickly to free the girls sparked a global Bring Back Our Girls movement. Members of the movement demonstrated on Thursday in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub, demanding that the government do more.

The vice president said securing the safe release of the schoolgirls and others held by Boko Haram is "a matter of conscience".
Nigeria's military in the past year has rescued thousands of Boko Haram captives while liberating towns and villages from the group's control, but many have been detained as possible Boko Haram suspects.

The Nigeria-based Boko Haram's seven-year Islamic uprising has killed more than 20 000 people and driven 2.6 million from their homes, with millions facing starvation.

The four-week old controversy over the safety of Benzoic acid levels in Fanta and Sprite has taken a new twist, as the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) said it found samples of Seven Up (a product of Pepsico) and Lucozade (a product of Glaxo SmithKline) to contain Benzoic levels of up to 330.0mg/kg and 323.53mg/kg respectively – far higher than the Nigerian regulatory standard of 250mg/kg; while Fanta and Sprite, two brands that have been in the eye of the storm, were found to contain levels that were within the standard.
The CPC made this disclosure in a press release issued on Tuesday on the outcome of its investigation into possible safety issues in Fanta, Sprite and other select soft drinks, strongly canvassing for regulatory review and actions for safer soft drinks in Nigeria.
The Council’s investigation came on the heels of public outcry and consumers’ apprehension following the action at the Lagos State High Court in Suit between FijabiAdebo Holdings Limited, Dr Emmanuel FijabiAdebo and Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd, and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, which alleged that Fanta Orange and Sprite may have the potentials to be hazardous due to its incompatibility with the Benzoic Acid Standards in the United Kingdom.
The director general of CPC, Mrs. Dupe Atoki, who disclosed that NAFDAC and SON have been informed about the outcome of the investigation, stated that the Council has also recommended regulatory action and review of the “Benzoic Acid limits in soft drinks as the current standard, which has been in existence since 2008 is overdue for review”, particularly with the requirement for reviews pegged for every five years.
Also in the light of the high level of Benzoic Acid found in isolated cases of Mirinda and Lucozade tested, she said the Council has called for further regulatory investigative analysis, action and review in the levels of the additive in the products.
The director general disclosed that CPC, in commencing its investigation, obtained from the open market in eight locations within the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria,65 samples of soft drinks, made up of Fanta Orange, Sprite, Mirinda and Lucozade and thatthese samples were sent to Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO), a laboratory under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, for the analysis of the levels of Benzoic Acid and Sunset Yellow in the products.

Nigeria handed down an astonishing 527 death sentences in 2016, three times more than the previous year, in what Amnesty International described on Tuesday as a "massive and worrying spike".



In its annual global report on the death penalty, the human rights group said that death sentences in Nigeria rose from 171 in 2015, placing it second only to China, a country that shrouds its executions in secrecy.

"The massive and worrying spike in death sentences recorded in Nigeria in 2016 put the country at odds with the global trend towards abolition of the death penalty," Amnesty International said in a statement.

"These steps by state and federal authorities are retrogressive and injustifiable as there is no evidence to suggest that the death penalty deters crime more effectively than other punishment," said Damian Ugwu, Amnesty International's Nigeria researcher.

"The danger of people being executed for crimes they may not have committed remains ever-present," Ugwu added.

Still, the laws appeal to Nigerians who are fed up with high levels of crime. "There is strong public support for the death penalty," Ugwu said.

In Nigeria, the death penalty is imposed for a vast array of crimes, including armed robbery, murder and treason.

Some northern states practise sharia law, which imposes capital punishment for adultery, rape and homosexuality.

The increase in death sentences is in part due to a resurgence of kidnappings and other crimes in the country's oil-producing south and the ongoing fight against Boko Haram Islamists in the northeast.

Last May, Nigeria's senate was considering a new federal law that would make kidnapping a capital crime.

Several state governments, such as Oyo in 2016 and Lagos earlier this year, have already introduced such legislation.

Kidnapping for ransom, which had declined in recent years, has recently increased as Nigerians face a recession caused by the crash in global oil prices.

Overall, Sub-Saharan Africa recorded more death sentences but fewer executions in 2016.

At least 22 executions were carried out in five countries - Botswana, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Somalia.

Setting time is important in paving activities because it influences the interval of time before finishing and joint sawing activities can be carried out. The cements obtained by mixing clinker, gypsum and fly ash present more important extension of setting time than the cement containing only limestone or the joint addition of fly ash and limestone.

The delay in the time of setting can be attributed to the dilution effects resulting from clinker replacement, or to the change of the paste rheology, which can be affected by the existence of elementary carbon. (I. Elkhadiria. et al). Batch intergrinding cement with 0, 3, 5.5, and 8% limestone to constant specific surface showed little effect on setting time, while grinding the cement to constant residue on a 325-mesh resulted in a reduction of setting time (Hawkins, 2003).


The setting time is much influenced by the degree of fineness of additions which is appeared to be advantageous for the decrease of both initial and final setting time of blended mixtures. It can be noted that the setting time increases with higher dosages of slag and limestone amounts, this can be explained by the low activity of additions, as the increase in surface area (3500, 5000 and 11000 cm²/g) influences positively the time of setting so the amount of water used increases to obtain a cement with normal consistence (Z. Leila et. al).

            Both initial and final setting time of Portland limestone cement pastes were decreased with an increasing of limestone content at the same fineness.  At the same level replacement, the cement pastes using small-sized limestone show lower setting time than those using large-sized limestone (P. Thongsanitgarn1. et. al).

            A study on the potential of using bottom ash as pozzolanic material was done. The quality was improved by grinding until the particle size retained on sieve 325 mm was less than 5% by weight. The results showed that pastes of cement with replacement by original or ground bottom ash, between 10-30% resulted in longer initial setting time, depending on the fineness of the ashes, compared to setting time of the cement paste. Original bottom ash mortar had higher water requirement than that of the cement mortar and ground bottom ash mortar had lesser water requirement than that of the cement mortar. Bottom ash could be used as a pozzolanic material if it was ground having retention on 325-micron sieve less than 5%, (P. Aggarwal et. al).

Lagos - Gunmen have shot dead four policemen, an army captain and a civilian in an attack on a community outside Nigeria's commercial hub of Lagos, police said on Monday.
The gunmen invaded Owutu-Ishawo in Ikorodu early on Sunday and kidnapped residents after looting their homes and shops.
"Around 01:00 on Sunday, the police received a distress call that a group of militants and kidnappers had entered Owutu-Ishawo in Ikorodu through the thick swampy forest surrounding the area," Lagos police spokesperson Olarinde Famous-Cole told AFP.
"They were reported to have kidnapped some residents. In response, the police and the army immediately mobilised personnel to the area where the kidnapped victims were rescued," he said.
"Sadly, however, five of the gallant and patriotic officers lost their lives during the rescue operation," he said.
Famous-Cole said police were combing the surrounding forests and creeks in search of the attackers.
Despite security generally improving in Lagos in recent years, hard economic conditions still force some people to turn to crime.
Last October, four students and two teachers were abducted from a school in Epe by gunmen in speed boats, prompting the government to demolish waterfront shanties in a bid to flush out the criminals.
In one such demolition, some 30 000 residents of Otodo-Gbame, near the upscale Lekki district, were made homeless, angering rights groups including Amnesty International.

A week ago Manchester United Fc travelled to Russia for the first leg against Fc where they were treated with unfamiliar conditions and they only managed to salvage a 1-1 away draw instead of putting the tie to rest with lots of goals, meaning Rostov still have hopes of qualifying tonight.


Manchester united started the first half with a high spirit as Rojo’s strong header in 5mins of play was stopped by the goalkeeper and the follow up rebound from Ibrahimovich was saved by the wood work.

Rostov tried their best to stifle United’s start to the game, with many of their players going down too easily, trust Mourinho he never feels shy to let out his feelings.
Rostov’s goalkeeper has been in high spirit stopping shots from United. Mata came deep to receive the ball and turns sharply before popping a teasing pass over the top of the defense, Ibrahimovich latched unto it and only managed to round the goalkeeper, only to be forced into the shot from the tight angle due to lack of support.
