A former Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh, hailed as commendable and instructive the performance of the national under-20 male football team at the 2014/2015 Super 4 Invitational Tournament. The Flying Eagles on Sunday at the Abuja National Stadium emerged champions of the six-team tournament held from Jan. 24 to Feb. 1.They beat 2013/2014 Glo Premier League champions Kano Pillars and 2014 Federation Cup winners Enyimba International FC, as well as Dolphins FC and Warri Wolves in their opening four games. With an unassailable 12 points, the under-20 side then played out a 3-3 draw in their final game against the Dream Team VI on Sunday. Obuh, who was coach of the team's 2011 and 2013 squads, said that the Flying Eagles had done well and deserved a huge commendation. ``We have to congratulate them because they have done well and they deserve our commendation. ``They have outplayed all the top league teams in this tournament and have beaten all of them in the process. ``A draw against their under-23 counterparts in their final game of the tournament was also a very good result for the team. ``I’m very happy for them and excited as well, because I think we have a very good team that is looking likely to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time for Nigeria. ``The coaches have also done well in assembling these boys because the way they play shows purpose and direction and hopefully they will do well at the African Youth Championship (AYC) in Senegal next month,” he said. New York/Lagos — CREDIBLE sources in the United States of America, Saturday, hinted that the White House might be planning to offer Nigeria a more significant military assistance to fight the Boko Haram terrorist group after the Presidential elections. In the same vein, the African Union, yesterday, agreed to send 7,500 troops to fight the Boko Haram insurgency in Northeast Nigeria. The head of the African Union's Peace and Security Council, Samil Chergui, who made disclosure said the move came after the council urged heads of state to endorse the deployment of troops from five West African countries to fight the terror group. It is, however, uncertain, whether, or not, the outcome of the election would influence US' plan to reconsider its earlier decision not to sale cobra jets to Nigeria. The planned military assistance, it was gathered, points to the possibility of approving sale of Cobra jets to Nigeria, an assistance that was previously denied it. The Guardian can reveal that US Secretary of State, John Kerry, hinted this in his meetings last week in Lagos with Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan and his main challenger, General Mohammadu Buhari. In fact, the US government has decided that while it will continue with the level and range of help and assistance it is currently rendering to Nigeria, more significant support, including a review of US decision not to approve the supply of Cobra jets to the Nigerian military, will follow after the presidential polls. In the same vein, the US may change its attitude on the level of American military training for Nigeria, essentially finding a way to work around the Leahy amendments, which constrains the use of US military training for countries with tainted militaries on the issue of human rights violations. It was disclosed that such reviews, both for military training and supply of the military fighter jets/weapons, would be facilitated not only with a new and different administration taking charge in Nigeria, but essentially the change in US policy can also come with a peaceful, free and fair election, no matter who wins the election. But what is clear, according to informed US sources, is that the US is essentially waiting on a peaceful outcome of the presidential polls next week. In fact, the White House has scheduled a major counter-terrorism conference, called "Summit on Countering Violent Extremism," for Feb 18; and foreign leaders, including those from Nigeria, would be invited. Already, members of the US Congress from both the Democratic and Republican parties are raising questions on the restraint of the White House to offer Nigeria a full-fledged support especially in regards to military and security assistance. For instance, the Chairman of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Ed Royce, and members of his committee are said to have invited the Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof Ade Adefuye to a meeting tomorrow (Monday February 2). Adefuye has been cited by several US sources as being singularly responsible for the pressure now being mounted on the US government even from within, regarding the need for a review and ramping up of American support and assistance to Nigeria on the fight against terror. Sources said the meeting is a follow-up to last Tuesday's Congressional hearing on Nigeria, where US members of the Congress actually criticised the US government's limited support to Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram. The meeting will explore what more the US government can do and how the US Congress, now in the hands of opposing Republicans, can put more pressure on a White House controlled by Democrats. US Defense Department (also known as the Pentagon) and US Africa Command officials have been particularly critical of the Nigerian military and are said to have been responsible for the refusal of the US government to okay the sales of the Cobra helicopter fighter jets to Nigeria. |

The Nigerian government has been obliged to buy black-market weapons to fight Boko Haram because the West refused to give it any military help, a prominent member of Nigeria's ruling party says. Nuhu Ribadu, a former Nigerian anti-corruption czar who is now a star candidate for the ruling party in a northern state where the Islamist radical militia has wreaked havoc, said Nigeria was "desperate" for military supplies and had to turn to the black market because Western governments were unwilling to help. "The world might regard this as illegal, but we were being stopped from getting help and our people were being slaughtered," Mr. Ribadu told The Globe and Mail last Friday. "We were being wiped out, and the world didn't give a damn. Nigeria was forced into the black market." The United States and other countries, including Canada, had promised to provide surveillance equipment to help Nigeria search for more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram last year, but they broke their promises, Mr. Ribadu said. "They did not give us anything," he said. "It was just niceties." Suspicions of black-market weapons-buying have been floating around Nigeria since last September, when South Africa detained a mysterious Nigerian plane carrying $9.3-million (U.S.) in cash. Media reports at the time said the money was intended for illicit arms purchases. Mr. Ribadu acknowledged that Nigerian authorities had "gotten into trouble" when they shopped for weapons on the black market, including in South Africa. "They were looking for tools of war from anywhere in the world." This week, South African media reported that 100 private "military experts" from South Africa are heading to Nigeria on a contract with the Nigerian government to train its soldiers to fight Boko Haram. The South African government responded by describing the former South African soldiers as "mercenaries" who would be arrested when they returned home. Mr. Ribadu said he could not give details of Nigeria's black-market arms purchases. "The world arms market is a very murky one," he said. "The arms could come from anywhere in the world." He said the black-market weapons have helped Nigerian troops regain control of several towns Boko Haram had captured in Adamawa, the state where he is running for governor as the candidate of the ruling People's Democratic Party. "They didn't have enough bullets, and now they have enough," he said. "There are some helicopter gunships that they have bought recently. I have heard them moving around." The United States and other Western countries have been reluctant to send military aid to Nigeria because of concerns about corruption and human-rights abuses by Nigeria's army. Human rights groups have alleged that the Nigerian military routinely commits atrocities in the northeast of the country. Last August, for example, Amnesty International said it had seen "gruesome footage" of Nigerian soldiers slitting the throats of detainees and dumping them in mass graves. But these allegations of human rights violations have demoralized the army and indirectly helped Boko Haram, according to Mr. Ribadu. On Friday, the African Union endorsed a plan to create a West African task force of 7,500 troops to fight Boko Haram. Soldiers from Chad are already reported to be active in battling the Islamist militants near Nigeria's border with Cameroon. In the past, Nigeria rejected the idea that it needed foreign military help. But now it seems to have accepted the military support from its West African neighbours. "It's only fair and right that others should come in and support us," Mr. Ribadu said. "We never got the assistance that Iraq and Afghanistan are getting." http://www.maxgist.com/2015/02/ribadu-nigeria-buys-black-market.html#more |
