1. The Canaanites were extremely wicked. They committed a lot of bloodshed among themselves. Would you permit such a practice to continue if you were the Judge of the whole world? Won't you judge the people?

2. The Canaanites were given a very long time to repent, but they didn't. God gave them over 500yrs but they grew more and more in wickedness. About 500yrs before their destruction, this is what God told Abraham:
Genesis 15:16 "After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction”
God waited long for them to repent before eventually destroying them. You should understand that God was the one who destroyed them. The Jews are a small people in stature. They were also few in number. Yet they conquered several renown nations whose inhabitants were giants!
3. Read through the scriptures, you'll discover that, even still, the Israelites were not the aggressors against the Canaanites. Even though God sent them to destroy those people because of their wickedness, the Israelites were not the aggressors. This is how the wars of Canaan started:
"And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king's high way, until we be past thy borders.. Israel is a reward for Abraham's dedication to God. God won't totally destroy Israel only because He would not destroy Abraham's promised reward. God kept remnants from Israel alive only because of that promise. He scattered them from Canaan for many years and decimated them beyond measure but still presented their nationhood. A just God. No partiality!
5. Now, let's talk about the Amelekites.
