My brother takes time to research how people with low incomes live. That 20k is a two-month feeding allowance for some families and they don't even look it. That bottle of coke you drink is some family's daily food budget and they are also living fine some times better than us. It’s hard to imagine, but I know a family whose total income doesn’t even reach 50k, both are teachers, and they are a family of three. Despite this, they own a piece of landed property in Ikorodu. I’m not saying this to sound good; I genuinely know this family.

I was at a shop buying foodstuff when someone came to buy 100-naira red oil. I asked the woman what the person planned to use it for. She said they would pour it over their rice with no stew, just oil and salt. I gave the woman some money to give him if he came around again and asked her to get his phone number for me.

I carefully tried to research this man's life. It turns out that he and his wife wake up as early as 4:30 a.m. and trek to work every day—a distance of about 20 km from where they live o. The surprising part is that their struggles don’t show much in their lifestyle. They seem like regular people you’d see daily, and they even dress better than some people. But shockingly, they also own landed property. He said told me the only problem that is not helping him to save much is his rent , but once they finish their property , that one will be solved.

I didn’t bother asking about their exact salary, but I’m 100% sure it’s not up to 50k.

A student earning N20k is not poor but a man who has to take care of himself with no help earning N20K, is poorer than poor. There is no way he can save. It is impossible.

Poor is better defined by how much you can save, not just how much you earn. You might be surprised to find that someone earning 20k can save consistently, while someone earning 60k might struggle to save anything. Regardless of income, if you can't save, financial instability and poverty remains, even if you're earning 1 million.

instead of struggling alone in poverty, you could find a partner to build and grow with. If you're earning 60k per month and she's earning 40k per month, that's a combined income of 100k per month. By cooking at home instead of eating out, you can save money. You also don't need to have children immediately; you can wait until your finances improve and reach a stable level.

We are running a dollarized economy, and everything we consume is imported. So, the dollar rate determines how valuable that money is. If the dollar rises to 3000 tomorrow, then that 5m is just about 2.5m in value, which is about 1500 dollars. Because if he decides to buy a car tomorrow, he will pay 5m for a car that used to cost 2.5m, due to the dollar rate. WHEN YOU BUILD A ROAD in a residential area, you MUST build sidewalks for pedestrians to walk because they are also taxpayers and deserve their walking space without having to compete for the road with vehicles.

iF govt sees a need for people to sell in any place with sidewalks, it can ensure the sidewalk is WIDE enough to place the stalls OFF the walking area, usually against the walls of adjoining buildings etc. etc.

You have not answered my question: will you feed them when you push them off the streets? You’ve provided pictures of Rwanda , a country of 14million people, but you haven’t shown their marketplace, which i'm sure their government must have provided abi they no dey chop?. There is no marketplace in my entire area where people can rent shops to sell aside shoprite and how many people can afford this?. This is a failure of our government. Before sending people off the streets, where is the provision for them?

My mother sent me to school using proceeds from selling on the roadside. If you had sent her off the street, I would have truly become the illiterate you are calling me right now. I am not fighting with you and I am not in support of selling on the roadside, but I've see the Lagos State government trying to remove market women from the streets without making provisions for them. If you learned it from Western countries, then go and check what Western countries offer to their citizens who have no jobs before you suggest that the poor, who are trying to make ends meet, should be pushed off the streets just because you want a beautiful view.
