Farida Waziri, the EFCC Chairman, on Sunday in Istanbul, Turkey, said the clamp down on bank debtors was to stimulate confidence in the banking system

Farida told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the just concluded 2009 IMF/World Bank Annual meeting that the target was to collect debts for the banks.

“ The affected debtors and their cronies are misinforming the public by painting the picture that borrowing money has become an offence that could put one in trouble.

“It is not true. Banking and lending go hand in hand. We did not talk about the good loans taken from the banks.

“ We did not invite the borrowers and nobody talked about them,” she said, adding that the EFCC will continue to invite debtors that collected huge sums of money without collaterals and proper records in the banks.

“ These are loans that were given without collaterals, these are loans that were given off the counter. These were loans that were not used for the purposes they were meant for,” she said.

Lamenting that ‘’some people went to buy property with other peoples’ money,’’ Waziri said the commission was collaborating with the CBN and NDIC in checking banks’ records.

On passport seizures, she said the EFCC did not confiscate the passport of any debtor, noting, however, that some foreign countries were creating a haven for looted funds.

“The advanced countries look the other way because the monies are coming to feed their economies. They know what to do if it is their own money.

“If there are no ready accounts where these monies will be lodged overseas, then the urge to loot will not be there.

“If they do loot, they will re-invest the loot in the country and get jobs for our teeming youths,” she said, adding that the EFCC will continue to do its job in the interest of the economy, noting that more than N110billion had been collected from debtors in the last three months.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), today grounded Bellview Airline.

Although no official reasons were adduced for the action as officials of NCAA declined to pick our calls, Bellview has been facing some challenges, one of which is the airline’s inability to airlift passengers from one destination to another.

Recently, over 200 passengers that bought the airline’s ticket for a trip to London were stranded at the Lagos airport for about a week. The passengers embarked on a violent protest before they were eventually airlifted.

Meanwhile, the plan by aviation workers to paralyse activities at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) following their threaten on Saturday, failed this morning due to the presence of heavily armed mobile policemen.

The policemen, led by a superintendent of police, Omololu Dishi, took over the GAT and the headquarters of the Federal Aviation Terminal as early as 6am today.

They stood at strategic locations and maintained that law and order will not be broken by the protesters. “We are here so that law and order will not be broken. We are also here to protect the Federal Government’s property as this is a very sensitive place and will not allow any crisis to take place here today.”

The General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Comrade Gideon Ogeuji, told P.M.News that the director of State Security Services (SSS) at the airport has summoned them to a meeting today adding that if the meeting ends in a deadlock, no flight will take off or land by midnight today.

Meanwhile, activities went on as usual today as flight took off and landed peacefully.

Arik Air, one of the busiest airlines in the country, has vowed not to relocate to Nigeria Murtala Airport 2 as directed by the Federal Government.

A staff of FAAN told P.M.News that the MD of FAAN has told them he has handed over the terminal to Bi-Courtney Ltd. and no amount of protests will change anything.

MAKURDI — In a bid to seek cure for his HIV status, a 36-year-old man, Cletus Agwu has been allegedly misled by a witch doctor in Makurdi to rape a three-year-old girl (names withheld) who has also been infected with the virus.

The bizarre incident which took place, weekend, at 8 Yogbo Street in the North Bank area of Makurdi, only came to the fore when the cry of agony of the three-year-old victim attracted inquisitive neighbours who saw her hold firmly to her vagina as she dripped blood.

Upon intense prompting, she informed neighbours of what the alleged rapist did to her and the threat that she must not disclose what transpired or she would be killed.

At this juncture residents of Yogbo Street and other concerned passersby went after the suspected rapist, but the quick intervention of the police saved him from being lynched by the angry mob.

Vanguard gathered that upon interrogation by the Police, Cletus who claimed he lived in the same compound with the victim’s parents, told the Police that he was HIV positive but acted on the advise of a witch doctor where he was seeking cure for his ailment, who urged him to have sex with a girl of not more than three years in order to get permanent cure for his disease.

He further confessed that it was his desperation for cure and his ‘doctor’s’ insistence that led him into committing the dastardly act with the little daughter of his co-tenant.

Meanwhile, medical test carried out on the raped girl at the North Bank General Hospital in Makurdi has also confirmed that the girl has been infected with HIV.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, who paraded the suspect before newsmen, confirmed the development.
