By Johnbosco Agbakwuru CALABAR – ABOUT eight officers of the Police Mobile Force Eleven Squadron, Calabar, Cross River State have been arrested between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States by a team of Mobile Force deployed from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for allegedly mounting illegal road blocs and improper dressing. The Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar had on assumption of office disbanded all road blocs by policemen and a team of mobile Officers was constituted to monitor the compliance of the IG’s directive. One of the officers arrested for gross indiscipline The team was mandated to arrest any officer that defied the directives and possibly institute disciplinary measures in order to put a stop any form of illegal escort, improper dressing, and unauthorized check points among others. The team led by the Commander in charge of Ethics, Doctrine and Monitoring, Mr. Anietie Eyo arrested three mobile policemen who allegedly did not obey the directives of the IGP in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital. On their way to Cross River State with the arrested culprits, the team again arrested two mobile policemen who abandoned their beat at the National Independent Power Plant, Odukpani to mount illegal checkpoint along the Calabar-Itu expressway. Another two other police officers were apprehended within the premises of the MOPOL 11 Command in Calabar, Cross River State for improper dressing and one other officer whose dressing was most appalling, was arrested outside. At the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, another culprit was arrested for violating the rules on escort of VIPs which stipulated that the security personnel must not be less than two in number. However, at a Mobile Police checkpoint along the Calabar-Ikang road, Bakassi, the team only identified two culprits that they could not arrest because of the sensitive nature of their job in the border area. The arrested combat policemen were left in the custody of various police divisions in the Akwa Ibom and Cross River State commands pending when further action would be taken on them. When contacted on telephone, the Commissioner of Police in charge of PMF at the Force Headquarters Abuja, Mr. Mbu J. Mbu, said all the culprits would be tried in-house and punished in line with the dictates of the rules. Mbu said, “We have our departmental disciplinary procedure. IG made pronouncement that had to do with dress code, that they must be combat ready at all times. These are the things that we are now trying to enforce. We have forwarded the signals to all field commanders and have given them enough time so that the men would conform to the directive.” He expressed confidence that the team would carry out its duty effectively without compromising, adding that any officer who tried to induce members of the team would be dealt with accordingly. On the issue of those who were not arrested but found wanting, Mbu said, “There are some designated checkpoints. Those people may not be taken away from their duty post because of the sensitive nature of their job, but their names and force numbers will be taken and they will be invited for trial.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/eight-mobile-policemen-arrested-for-mounting-illegal-check-points/ |

By SHOLA OGUNDIPE & CHIOMA OBINNA IKEJA—THE family of retired Assistant Comptroller of Fire Service, Mr. George Moses, a victim of the June 3 Dana air crash, Tuesday, raised the alarm over the whereabouts of his corpse, just as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, condemned the assault on Mr Benedict Uwalaka, a photo-journalist with Leadership newspapers. Describing the alleged disappearance of the body as “insincerity” on the part of the hospital authorities, a member of the late Moses’ family, Mr. Achief Olajide, who spoke to journalists, alleged that in June, the name of the victim was among the 29 identified names pasted at the Lekan Ogunsola Memorial mortuary of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja. Brandishing documents and photographs, he said: “After the June 3 crash, we came the following day to the mortuary to identify the body. I entered the morgue, saw Moses’ body and it was intact and he was also identified by his ID card which was in his wallet. A Naval Officer, Joe Aikhomu, and others relation of the victims of DANA Air crashed waiting for clarification at General Hospital Mortuary in Ikeja Lagos ”We were asked to wait at the hall for briefing. Professor John Obafuwa brought out the list of identifiable bodies which was up to 29 names. My uncle’s name was number 22 on the list. Search for the corpse “The professor asked us to bring the photograph of the deceased. We brought the photograph, but the professor changed his word that the deceased’s body cannot be released again that they were going for DNA testing. After two months, we were called that the result was out.” According to Olajide, the search for the corpse began on Tuesday August, 7, after announcement of the arrival of the DNA test results from the United Kingdom. He said the name of the late Moses was not on the list pasted at the mortuary. Asked if he was aware that the LASUTH authorities said there were 16 bodies yet to be identified either because they were excessively charred or the samples submitted by relatives could not match the bodies during the forensic analysis. Olajide said: “I understood there were 16 bodies burnt beyond forensic analysis or some families could not show up with reference samples. But our case does not fall into any of these categories. So, where is his body? ”They must give me the corpse because the family cannot tolerate any excuse this time out.” No word from LASUTH Efforts to contact LASUTH officials for comment proved abortive. Meanwhile NUJ has frowned on the assault meted on the photo-journalist. “We cannot continue to fold our hands while journalists who are carrying out their duties are being battered by some miscreants. We cannot continue to fold our hands, rather at every point in time we will continue to fight for our rights,” said NUJ National President , Mr. Garba Mohammed . Speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Association of Nigerian Journalist, NAWOJ through his Vice, Mr. Rotimi Obamuwabu, Mohammed avowed: “Any person that wages war against any journalist in Nigeria; that an attack on any journalist is an attack on every journalist in Nigeria. We will continue to resist any attack by anybody, and journalist in Nigeria should continue to fight for ourselves no matter how highly placed is the individual. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/dana-crash-victims-corpse-disappears-in-morgue/ |
on point sir...a very calm comment from you Pataki: I cry when I see what my country has become. I am utterly ashamed. Of course, Retardeen's government is all about chop the money. |
Frontline activist and Coordinator of the Ijaw Monitoring Group, IMG, Comrade Joseph Evah has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to reinstate the former National Security Adviser, NSA, General Andrew Azazi (rtd), who he sacked, about two months ago, to avoid the repetition of the event that led to the death of former military Head of State, the late Major- General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi -Ironsi, 46 years ago. It would be recalled that Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi, born in 1924, was the Head of State of Nigeria from January 16, 1966, until he was overthrown and killed July 29, same year, by a group of northern army officers, who revolted against his government. Comrade Evah said the sacking of Azazi was a contrived agenda by some northern elements, which he (President Jonathan) fell into, despite the fact that he was forewarned not to fall into the ambush by those who want to oust him from power. His words, “I said it long before General Azazi was removed and it was published by a national newspaper that Boko Haram would ask President Jonathan to resign once he makes the mistake of firing Azazi. It is one of the grand designs of the group and now, they have asked Jonathan to resign after he fired Azazi”. “Some people may not know, but I want to tell you that we have a serious battle at hand now. President Jonathan should humble himself and recall Azazi. “He should stop listening to bad advisers who he has surrounded himself with. They are confusing him and since he recalled the Director General of the Security Exchange Commission, SEC, Arunmah Oteh, I don’t see why Azazi should not be recalled”, he said. Evah said the plan of those who wanted Azazi out was for Jonathan to expose himself, and having achieved that, “the next target is to impeach him”. “But my prayer is that God should open the eyes of Jonathan to see the dangerous plans against him. I forewarned in my earlier interview that they would expose him as it happened to former Head of State, Gen Aguiyi Ironsi before they will strike and that is what is happening now. “When Jonathan was trying to remove Azazi, I told him not to attempt it, that he was playing with fire, he did not listen. He ignored us because he was listening to sycophants. Now that the handwriting is very clear on the wall, he should ignore these sycophants and recall Azazi to continue with and improve on his strategy against Boko Haram”, Evah asserted. He said from his practical analysis of the problem, Gen Azazi (rtd), understood the game plan of Boko Haram and had devised a strategy to nail them, which some powerful forces saw and deftly moved against him, but Jonathan could not decode the scheme and fell for it. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/08/13/remember-aguiyi-ironsi-overthrown-evah-warns-jonathan/ |
