PoliticsOLYMPICS: “no Gold, No Silver, No Bronze, N2.3 Bn Down The Drain” by Korrection(op): 8:15am On Aug 13, 2012
LAGOS—The story of Nigeria at the 2012 London Olympics is “No gold, no silver, no bronze, N2.3 billion down the drain.”

And now a top Nigerian sports official who is a member of an international sports federation wants the federal government to compel the sports ministry to account for how they spent the N2.3 billion government released for the Olympic Games which ended in London yesterday. He would not have his name on print.

He said the ministry should disclose how much they released to each sports association that presented a team to the Olympic Games. Athletics, Weightlifting, Taekwondo(athletes) Canoeing (one athlete), Wrestling, Basketball, Table Tennis and Boxing associations presented teams at the games. All the athletes were 51. The number of officials was still unknown as there were many who were not accredited and, consequently, were not useful to the athletes. They stayed in their hotels to watch the games on television. This irked the Nigerian official and he described the action of the ministry as “wasteful.”

He said it was necessary for the ministry to disclose the allocations to each association because of what he called “the wrong decisions” that partly affected Nigeria’s preparation to the games.

Flags of various nations, including Norway (C) and Nigeria (2nd-R), are displayed during the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games at Olympic Stadium on August 12, 2012 in London. Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games. AFP PHOTO

The official said the following: “Taekwondo that presented two athletes was given over N65m to prepare while Athletics that had over 100 athletes but which they pruned to 28 for the Olympics was given N131m. Basketball which had to travel to Venezuela for their qualifying tournament was given N75m for all their

preparation including the tournament in Venezuela. The rest of the sports did not get more than N500,000. And yet N2.3 billion was released for the Olympic games. But the money came in installments and it came so late that nothing much could be done with the last installment. This is not the way to prepare for the Olympic Games. The people who disbursed the money took wrong decisions and now the

athletes are saying that they did not prepare well. The ministry is to blame.”

A coach in one of the teams admitted that Nigeria lacked world class athletes and that even if more billions of money were approved the money would have still gone down the drain as “you cannot perform magic over night in sports, you build over a period of time.”

The last time Nigeria left the Olympic Games without a medal was 24 years ago in the Seoul Olympic Games of 1988.

PoliticsJTF Nabs Terrorists, Recovers Weapons Of Mass Destruction by Korrection(op): 6:01am On Aug 11, 2012
BY NDAHI MARAMA, MAIDUGURI-

Following the new tactics of operation adopted by the Joint Task Force (JTF) which is tagged “Humanitarian Line of Operation” against the deadly Boko Haram sect in Maiduguri and Jere council areas of Borno state, a raid operation was conducted within the metropolis leading to the recovery of large arms and ammunition yesterday.

Briefing newsmen at the JTF Headquarters along Pompomari By- pass in Maiduguri, the Field Operations Commander, Colonel Victor Ebheleme commended the efforts of residents for cooperating with the security agencies in providing information on the hideouts of the sect members, which according to him led to the success of recovering the arms and ammunition .

Arms and ammunition recovered by JTF at Maiduguri

Ebheleme said, some residents provided information on the hideouts of some suspected members of the sect, enabling the JTF swung into action and arrested some members and after interrogation, the suspects revealed the house of a person (now at large),

During the JTF searc of the house 4 AK47 rifles, 1 set of GpMG, 9 RPG Bombs and 11 chargers were recovered in the house.

He added that other weapons of mass destruction recovered from the house include 1,032 rounds of ammunition, 3 AK47 Magazines and 3 Wooden Butts.

Also the JTF Field Commander revealed that two criminals involved in sending anonymous threats through text messages to individuals requesting for money were also arrested in the state Capital, Maiduguri.

He therefore reminded members of the Public to always report such threat to security agencies early enough for prompt action, even as he enjoined them to always give information that will lead to the arrest of criminals in the state, stating that all information provided by the general public will be treaded with utmost confidentiality.

In another development, some gunmen laid ambush in Gwange ward of Maiduguri metropolis and shot dead a banker with First City Monument Bank (FCMB), injuring one of his friend, while the other escaped unhurt.

The incident it was gathered took place at about 6:45pm when the deceased along side his two friends were breaking their fast infront of his house in Gwange, when the gunmen came and opened fire on them and escaped without being arrested.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jibrin said, “information available to the Command revealed that some suspected terrorists laid ambush in Gwage ward on Thursday evening killing a banker with FCMB, and injured one”.

He said investigation has already commenced with a view to arrest the culprits.

PoliticsAmerica Will Help Jonathan’s Government Fight Boko Haram – Hilary Clinton by Korrection(op): 9:16am On Aug 10, 2012
The US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton yesterday expressed concerned over the security challenges facing Nigeria.

She assured of US’s government readiness to join forces with Nigeria government to tackle the Boko Haram sect.

Clinton spoke in Abuja during a one day meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan on the need to curb the spreading of Boko Haram’s attacks to other parts of the country.

According to her, “You appreciate and you know how committed United States and the Obama Administration is to our partnership with your country. We consider it absolutely vital to our Bi-National Commission which as you have mentioned, has helped us to expand and deepen our cooperation on a full range of issues.

“We are working on economic matters, the improvement of productivity in agriculture, education and health, security, diversification of your economy and so much more.

“We intend to remain very supportive on your reform efforts.

“Thank you for mentioning the work we did together on the election. We were also very supportive of anti corruption reform efforts, more transparency in the work that you and your team are also championing because we really believe that the future for Nigeria is limitless but the most important task that you face, as you have said, is making sure that there are better opportunities for all Nigerians, South, East, West, every young boy or girl to have a chance to fulfil his or her God given potential.

“We want to work with you and we will be by your side as you make the reforms and take the tough decisions that are necessary.

President Jonathan commended the Americans for their support, saying Nigeria has enjoyed a smooth relationship with the US under Obama’s government.

He said“Within this period of being Secretary of State, she has raised the relationship between Nigeria and America to a very high level that we have never reached for some time by personally chairing the Bi-National Commission. We have discussed various things – security, economy and so on and so forth. She has been very supportive.

“And of course, the Obama administration is also passionate about Africa and Nigeria. He has always been very supportive of us in the past five years. From the days I came in as Vice President, especially at that period as a nation when we faced a lot of challenge when the late President (umar Uar’Adua) was very ill and we passed through a turbulent period.

“And they gave us the support that stabilised this country. And when we insisted we must conduct an election that is free and fair, they were very supportive. They gave us moral support, technical support to INEC and assisted us to make sure that we conducted elections that national and international observers declared as free and fair.

“So, let me on behalf of government and good people of Nigeria really thank you and President Obama and the good people of America for this support and Africa and all what you are doing to make sure that this part of the globe is developed,” She said.

Clinton who had earlier visited Senegal, Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Malawi, and South Africa, she expected to attend the funeral of the late Ghanaian President John Attah Mills, today in Accra.
PoliticsBakassi Front Hoists National Flag, Sets Up Radio Station by Korrection(op): 8:46am On Aug 10, 2012
BY Johnbosco Agbakwuru

CALABAR – A group of displaced Bakassi youths has threatened to form its own nation following alleged abandonment by the Federal Government and the ceding of their ancestral land to the Republic of Cameroon.

A militant group in the area, Bakassi Self Determination Front, has, meanwhile, hoisted its Blue-White-Red liberation flag dotted with stars at Dayspring, which was supposed to be the resettlement camp for the displaced and has set up a radio station.

The station, which allegedly started test-transmission on August 6, 2012, at 12p.m., operates on 4.2 MHz and 5.2MHz Short Wave band in both Efik and English languages, disseminates information on activities in the ceded Peninsula.

The Bakassi Self Determination Front had, four days ago, issued a two- week ultimatum to its people living in the ceded territory to vacate or be crushed. It also warned against movement on the sea on Saturday August 11 and Sunday 12, 2012.

It was alleged that the group had in a text message to the member representing Bakassi/Calabar South/Akpabuyo constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Essien Ayi, said: “This is your constituency, there shall be no movement of boats from Ikang beach or Marina beach to Cameroon on August 11 and 12, 2012.

“Announce to your constituents, major takeover events will occur that will take the world by surprise for those who dance for the society must learn to know when the drumming demands a new dance.

“Those who come from Usakedet by bush track to Akwa and Archibong town must not move on those days. God will definitely be on the throne on these days. We hope you will save your people.”

The group claimed that a Cameroon radio monitored in Yoande said the military high command of the country was watching the unfolding events in Bakassi and will respond to it appropriately.

PoliticsBoko Haram: Arrest Ciroma, Lawal Kaita – Clark by Korrection(op): 7:06am On Aug 09, 2012
BY HENRY UMORU
ABUJA—ELDER statesman and prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, yesterday, stoked his campaign against Northern leaders over the activities of Boko Haram by asking security agencies to go after former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma and former Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita.

The former Federal Information commissioner, who challenged former President Ibrahim Babamasi Babangida to a joint public debate on national issues to ascertain who is actually senseless or senile, insisted that northern leaders must speak out on the activities of Boko Haram if they were not backing the group.

Reading a prepared text on behalf of Chief Edwin Clark at a Press briefing inAbujayesterday, Legal Adviser to the Ijaw leader, Kayode Ajulo, said that Ciroma and Kaita’s comments before the massive killings could serve as substantial evidence against them.

The E.K Clark statement

The text read in part: “Chief Clark’s challenge to the leaders of the North is predicated on the misguided statements of some of the Northern opinion leaders since the inception of this administration. For example, in October, 2010 during a build up to the last presidential election, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, a prominent Northern leader promised to makeNigeriaungovernable if the President did not come from the North.

Chief Edwin Clark

“And as if on cue from Lawal Kaita, several other leaders of Northern Political Leaders Forum, headed by Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, of which Gen. Babangida is a prominent member, followed suit with similar reckless comments which might not only threaten peace in Nigeria but also Nigeria’s very existence.

“Recently in March this year, Lawal Kaita issued another threat to the effect that the only condition forNigeriato be one is for the presidency to come to the North in 2015.”

According to Clark, northern leaders must show genuine commitment, be proactive and speak out now towards addressing the challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgency against the backdrop that precious lives of Nigerians were being wasted daily across the country in Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Abuja and Bauchi among others.

On General Babangida’s reaction to his public lecture last Wednesday, particularly where it was alleged that senses had since departed him,Clarksaid that the public debate or discourse with Babangida must be free of interference and prompting from aides.

He added: “Let it also be noted, for the record, that Chief Clark delivered a one hour, 20 minutes lecture very coherently and articulately without having to refer to a written text. Nigerians stand a better position to judge as to who is senseless or senile as suggested by Gen. Babangida who can only make public utterances through texts prepared by aides and speech writers.”

Insisting that the former military president was side-stepping comments on Boko Haram,Clarkurged Nigerians to ask why he had been silent for so long on the issue.

How it all started

The exchange of brick-bats between Clark and Babangida started last week Wednesday when Clark at theSecondStateof the Federation Lecture organised by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, NIALS inAbujaclaimed that some northern leaders were not speaking out against increasing spate of violence in the country.

He had specifically challenged Babangida and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari to condemn the activities of the Boko Haram group that have claimed responsibility for the insurgency campaign in many parts of the country.

But replying the elder statesman on Sunday through his spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua, Babangida slammed Clark for not recognizing the historic role he played in unifying the country, just as he warned Clark not to crucify him, adding that with his age, what should be the cardinal posture of Chief Clark was to proffer solutions to the problem of insecurity in the country.

According to Babangida, “we view this misguided and senseless statement in very bad taste and we take very strong exceptions to his drooling and implied conclusion.”

Countering yesterday, the elder statesman, who described Babangida’s statement as total insult and total misconceptions, said, “the statements showed nothing but insulting miscomprehension and misconception of Chief E. K. Clark’s innocuous expressed opinions and the challenge thrown down to the leaders of the North on the need to resolve the Boko Haram menace.

“Ordinarily, Gen. Babangida should have joined many other Nigerians who applauded Chief E. K. Clark for crying out over the wanton loss of lives being experienced daily over the senseless killings ofNigeria’s women and children, Christians and Muslims alike.

“Chief E. K. Clark is committed to the unity ofNigeriaand peace within its borders. This was aptly demonstrated when some youths in the Niger Delta took arms against the Federal Government of Nigeria, resulting in the near total shut down of oil production; crude oil production which normally stood at 2.5 million barrels per day was reduced to 700, 000 barrels daily. Chief Clark led a delegation of Niger Delta leaders into the creeks to appeal to the youths to lay down arms and embrace peace.

How Clark ended militancy in Niger Delta

“Chief E. K. Clark also went to the creeks with the then Vice President, now President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, particularly to Okerenkoko and Camp 5 (which was the headquarters of the militants), thereby laying the foundation for late President Yar Adua’s amnesty programme.

“Therefore, amnesty did not come on a platter of gold, but through the genuine determination of the leaders of the Niger Delta, led by Chief E. K. Clark. Today, crude oil production inNigeriahas risen to about 2.7 million barrels per day.

“It is therefore imperative, irrespective of the name calling, to restate what was said at the NIALS lecture on the state of Nigerian Federation that ”Gen. Babangida and other Northern leaders must speak out, be proactive as well as demonstrate genuine commitment to address the challenges posed by the Boko Haram.” This is more so as precious lives of Nigerians are being wasted daily across the country in Borno, Yobe, Sokoto,Kano,Kaduna, Kogi,Abuja, Bauchi, etc.

“Chief (Clark) is surprised that Gen. Babangida would belatedly suggest that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should use Moslem clerics, when he, by his experience, and position is fully abreast of what to do in the circumstances of Nigeria bearing in mind his exalted membership of the Council of State and his former position as President and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Nigeria. After all, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, a former President like Gen. Babangida not only spoke out strongly on this issue but went toMaiduguriin the aim of securing peace for the country.

“The attempt to label Chief Clark as an ethnic jingoist has no basis whatsoever as he has always believed and maintained that no ethnic group should be a second class citizen in Nigeria and that no Nigerian life whether from the North or South, East or West should be wasted.

“Taking regard of his age and stature, Chief Clark wants to state that he fully forgives Gen. Babangida whom he regards as a younger friend for the unfortunate statement attributed to him. If anything, Chief Clark holds the view that the thoughts and energy exerted by Gen. Babangida against him should urgently be redirected towards finding a lasting solution to the Boko Haram menace in the North.

A call for dialogue

“It should be restated that Chef Clark has severally emphasized the need for dialogue with Boko Haram and other aggrieved groups with a view to resolvingNigeria’s current security challenges.

“It is in this vein that Chief Clark speaks to his good friends in the North, including General Babangida once again, irrespective of Gen. Babangida’s threat of litigation, that they should openly condemn Boko Haram and join hands with the Government and good people ofNigeriatowards finding a lasting solution to the challenge posed by the Boko Haram menace. Any laxity on their part would, either wittingly and unwittingly, potentially put them out as accessories to the present security scourge in the Northern part ofNigeria.

‘’If this simple advice above is urgently heeded, it will save Gen. Babangida the need to wear uniform once again at the age of 71 to fight for the unity of Nigeria.”

PoliticsLagos Assembly Recognises Voodoo In Land Dispute, Orders Charms Removal by Korrection(op): 6:47am On Aug 09, 2012
By EBUN SESSOU

IKEJA—The place of voodoo in dispute resolution may have been given recognition by the Lagos State House of Assembly despite the fact that it is alien to Nigerian law.

This is so as the lawmakers urged the Radelu Family of Ikorodu to remove fetish materials from two plots of land in Aga, Ikorodu area of Lagos State which had hindered development from taken place.

The House also ordered the family to give the two plots of land to its rightful owner, Mrs Ganiat Sadiku, a 52-year-old widow, who bought them from the Radelu Family 17 years ago.

The petitioner, who narrated her ordeal to Vanguard said: “Since 17 years when I bought two plots of land from the Radelu Family, it has been from one problem to another. Though I have all the necessary pictorials to back up my claims, the Radelu Family of Ikorodu has been making life miserable for me. There are different violent attempts to dispose me of my property situated at Radelu Family land, Aga ward, Ikorodu.

“I have been battling strange things in my house, my family has been devastated because of what is happening and for those 17 years, I have been moving around like a mad woman on the street until I encountered someone who advised me to approach the Lagos State House of Assembly for help and I forwarded my petition.”

In its intervention, the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Public Petitions, Mr. Sanai Agunbiade, noted that the petitioner purchased the land in 1995.

The House then urged the Radelu Family to accept ratification instead of outright repossession of the land in dispute which is part of the subject-matter of litigation that produced the judgment suit number IKD/1179/82.
