There were indications at the weekend that President Goodluck Jonathan may soon sack some of his Ministers following an assessment of their performance. “Daily Post” gathered that the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Aliyu Gusau has accepted the offer to become the next Minister of Defence following the recent sack of former acting National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Haliru Mohammed. Though, it was learnt further that one of the speculated candidates for Defence portfolio, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, had allegedly foreclosed occupying public office since last year. It was gathered that there is preference for Gusau than a retired Intelligence Officer in the Nigerian Army, Gen. Halilu Akilu. The President is, however, keeping members of his cabinet in suspense over the imminent shake-up to avoid pressure. It was learnt that the President has begun discussion with some Nigerians he might bring into the cabinet to revitalise it. According to findings, the President is keeping his ministers in suspense to avoid pressure from political godfathers. Although the President had initially opted for a minor cabinet reshuffle, a reliable source said the tone has changed to a ‘strategic’ shake-up. It was unknown last night how many ministers in the remaining 41-man cabinet would be affected. The source added: His body language appears as if he will not effect any change but the reality is that some cabinet members will be dropped. “Jonathan has his own independent assessment of ministers. He knows those who are hard-working and the lazy ones. During his recent media chat, he alluded to the ministerial briefing held by ministers. “The President is shopping for fresh hands and he has opened up discussions with a few talented Nigerians that might come on board. “Some ministers who are used to the President’s style do not want to be caught unawares; they have intensified lobbying to remain in the cabinet. “But the President has kept his game plan secret and he might unfold it soon.” http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/07/08/more-ministers-sacked-gusau-become-next-defence-minister/ SAME OLD SH1T!!! |
By DAPO AKINREFON LAGOS — FORMER National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George, has flayed the administration of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, government in Lagos State just as he restated his party’s readiness to wrest power from the party in 2015. He said this in Lagos, weekend, while receiving defectors from ACN at the party’s secretariat in Lagos. Chief George berated the Lagos State Government for failing to address the problems facing Lagosians, noting that: “I am not surprised that every reasonable and thoughtful Lagosian is abandoning the ACN sinking ship in Lagos. ”Tinubu and his co-travellers are clueless about what to do. They are in power, but they are not in government. They are collecting over N40 billion every month in internally- generated revenue and yet, the people live in misery and penury.” While he said the party was putting its house in order to ensure it emerges victorious in the 2015 governorship election, he enjoined members of PDP to join hands to work for the progress of the party. He said: “Is Fashola a symbol of our future? No. Is Tinubu a symbol of our future? No. Fashola, Tinubu and the ACN gang are the worst nightmares that are now tormenting our psyche. We must flush them out, we must throw them back to where they belong. ‘The journey has started right now. We cannot wait a minute longer; the mission is our collective responsibility. We must all join hands to remove the ACN disease and scourge from our midst.” Former governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, expressed optimism that PDP will form the next government in Lagos State. Also present at the event were Senator Iyiola Omisore; Chief Ebenezer Babatope; former governorship candidate of PDP, Dr. Ade Dosunmu; state party chairman, Captain Tunji Shelle (rtd), among others. The decampees, led by Mr Abdulkareem Rafiu, described PDP as the only party that allow internal democracy, blaming the leadership of ACN for imposing candidates on the people. The people of Lagos state are fed up with the administrative style of the CAN and are yearning for change. In his remarks, Shelle said, “the PDP is on the rise again, marching to Alausa and that by 2015, we will be on the seat of power to make life more abundant for the people who in any case, are actually yearning for change. It’s time for National Dialogue, says Gani Adams Meantime, National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams has called on the Federal government to convene a national dialogue to address the various problems facing the country. In a statement made available to Vanguard, Otunba Adams stated that the call for a national dialogue being advocated is imperative to rebuild the nation and rescue it from imminent collapse. According to him, “over the past years, the Boko Haram sect has escalated its deadly attacks against Christians and government targets in the North, killing innocent Nigerians and maiming several others. The activities of the group have no doubt heightened fears among Nigerians about their safety. There is a growing sense of insecurity everywhere you turn as Nigerians, especially those based in the North, now live in fear.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/07/pdp-vows-to-win-lagos-in-2015/ |

The clash of words between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has not come to an end yet, even after the governorship debate held in the state where the PDP and the ACN engaged in a verbal battle to the amusement of the audience. Just one week to the most talked about Edo governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Action Congress of Nigeria have continued to engage themselves in a war of words. Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, a PDP national leader had in an interview in Benin, told journalist in the most confident way that PDP will emerge victoriously in the July 14th governorship election. However, reacting to the statement, the Edo ACN chairman, Thomas Okosun, refuted Ogbemudia’s assertion, saying that the ACN was battle ready to frustrate all the effort of rigging that could emanate from the PDP’s desk. Ogbemudia, in a reconciliation meeting in his house in Benin had assured the PDP that its candidate, Charles Airhiavbere would be wearing the crown after the July 14th governorship election. He said, “A research has been carried out in the past two weeks, which revealed that the PDP will garner 25 per cent of votes from Edo North, where Oshiomhole is from, 70 per cent from Edo Central, Chief Tony Anenih’s area, and will win Edo South by 60 per cent.” Admitting that it was a herculean task to defeat the incumbent governor, he said “Not only is the governor intelligent, he has a very high IQ (Intelligent Quotient), and he is loved by the people.” Okosun had opened up by stating that his party would watch the PDP carefully in case of rigging and any form of manipulation. He said, “They have also been indulging in other acts: sponsoring violence and buying voter cards from prospective voters in the state. All these things are the antics of a desperate party, but the people of Edo are now wiser and cannot be hoodwinked. “They will fail because all their evil plans will be checkmated. The people will monitor their votes right from the polling booth to the state INEC head office. “The good works of the ACN under the comrade governor is for us, just as he has been highlighting at our rallies across the state, we cannot allow the tide of development to be reversed in Edo. The people will vote ACN, and are ready to defend their votes.” Oshiomhole’s Director of Media and Publicity of the Oshiomhole Campaign Organisation, Kassim Afegbua, equally referred to the PDP’s dream of winning the Edo state election as utopian and unrealizable.. He said, “The PDP is lazy about campaigns. It is relying on the use of imported thugs and touts into Edo State. “They will be shocked to find that the ruling party in the state has tremendous goodwill to checkmate all their shenanigans.” President Goodluck Jonathan had earlier in a stste visit to Edo State advised the political parties involved in the Edo state poll to adhere strictly to the principle of one man, one votee of one man, one vote, saying that ballot box stuffing, falsification of election results and violence would not be overlooked during the election. Relatively, the Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed the deployment of about 8,842 personnel to Edo state for the election. It also confirmed that not less than 7 candidates would be contesting for the Edo state’s governorship election come July 14th. They include Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole (ACN), Solomon Edehiri (All Nigeria Peoples Party), Izevbuwa Roland (Congress for Progressive Change), Andrew Igwemoh (Labour Party), Paul Orumwense (National Conscience Party), Charles Airhiarbere (PDP) and Frank Ukonga (Social Democratic Mega Party). The commission’s Director (Public Affairs), Mr. Emmanuel Umenger, said there were 2,627 polling units in the state, asserting that INEC would be “deploying 8,842 personnel to conduct the election.” He further confirmed that 1,555,776 registered voters are to take part in the election. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/07/07/acn-vows-frustrate-pdp-edo-state/ WAR!!! |

The were indications yesterday that following the newly approved monthly salaries for members of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, monthly salary is now more than what President Goodluck Jonathan earns. A source who spoke in confidence disclosed that with this development, the monthly take home pay for Tukur is N2m and the National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, N1.5m. President Jonathan’s earns N1.17m monthly, the vice-president receives N1,010,524.17 while the Senate President goes home with N724,570.73. A minister also earns N650,136.67; governor N648,580.63; Deputy Senate President N673,506.97 and Speaker of the House of Representatives earns N412,851.67This development is a deviation from the tradition in the party since its formation in 1998 as all previous NWC members were paid only sitting allowances. Other 10 members of the NWC will receive N1m monthly. It was also gathered from the source that apart from the new monthly salaries, members of the NWC will continue to collect the N50,000 weekly sitting allowance which was all that accrued to their predecessors. Besides, members of PDP executives also entitled to housing, furniture and vehicle allowances. According to the source ”the leadership of the party resolved to pay the salaries to financially empower them and discourage the tendency of the national officers running cap in hand to PDP governors, a practice that compromised the party leaders in the past. Efforts to reach the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, were unsuccessful as he was said to have travelled outside the country for official engagement. The Special Assistant (Media) to the PDP National Chairman, Shariff Ujudud, declined to comment on this development in a telephone interview. He insisted that only the national publicity secretary could speak on the issue. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/07/06/pdp-national-chairman-now-earns-jonathan/ This country is heading for division....Believe me |
By Gabriel Enogholase, Benin CHIEF of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubike Ihejirika has announced the deployment of 3,500 soldiers to Edo State ahead of the July 14 Governorship election in the State. Assistant Inspector General of Police, (AIG) Zone 5, Hashimu Salihu Argungu, disclosed this press conference held in his office with the commanding officer, 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Benin, Brigadier General Abel Obi Umahi in attendance. Brig- Gen, Umahi at the meeting, said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubike Ihejirika has approved the deployment of the soldiers to assist the police and other security personnel for the election. He further disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff has also approved 60 Hilux buses and some army patrol trucks will be distributed in various local governments and constituencies in Edo State. While advising the electorate not to be scared of the presence of the military personnel, the Brigade commander said the soldiers would be placed in different locations to monitor the election in all nooks and crannies of the state. Similarly, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Argungu, said, the police command was fully ready to engage any trouble maker or politician who will be out to derail the election process even as he warned that any person who attempts to hijack electoral materials would be treated as an enemy of the process and would be made to face the wrath of the law. He also warned those warming up to serve as thugs during the election to discard their plans as any person who wears a uniform that is not recognised by the law enforcement agency will be treated as an armed robber and political thug, while those planning to use money to lure voters or electoral officers will also be treated as criminals. While calling on the electorate to come out en-masse to cast their vote, the AIG who assured of adequate security said only those that are with their voter’s card would be allow to move to their voters’ centres during the election, as no vehicle will be allowed into the town, except through the by-pass.
