Why I Renamed UNILAG Moshood Abiola Varsity — Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday explained that his government renamed the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Moshood Abiola University in commemoration of Democracy Day and in honour of the late Chief Moshood Olawale Kashimawo (MKO) Abiola who paid the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of justice and peace.

In a broadcast to the nation, the president said: “Destiny and circumstances conspired to place upon his shoulder a historic burden and he rose to the occasion in character and courage.

“He deserved recognition for his martyrdom and public-spiritedness and for being the man of history that he was. We need in our land more men and women who will stand up to defend their belief and whose example will further enrich our democracy.

“After very careful consideration and in honour of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s accomplishment and heroism, on this Democracy Day, the University of Lagos is renamed by the Federal Government of Nigeria Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.

“The federal government will establish an Institution of Democratic Studies in governance in the university.’’

But no sooner had the government made the announcement than students of the institution in their thousands trooped out to protest against the renaming of their school, insisting that the institution must maintain its old name.

The students, who came out enmasse from their various hostels, blocked the entrance of the campus and stopped all commercial vehicles and motorcycles that attempted to pick up passengers from the campus.

Students of postgraduate studies were not left out of the protest, as they sang and chanted solidarity songs.

One of the students who led the protest said, “President Jonathan did not know what to do again after the removal of subsidy in January and therefore thought the next thing to do was to disturb our peaceful academic environment by changing the name of the institution.”

Proponents of the immunity clause claim that the immunity shields them from having to go through time-wasting court cases and would save tax-payers monies that would have been spent on legal fees. Now isn't the Attorney-general (a government employee) supposed to represent the govt in court cases? So how does the said legal fees arise? And then a party cannot just bring the government to court if not for the reason that govt must have aggrieved said party? Does it now mean that a governor or the president can cause harm to another entity and go away with it? The governor or president can sue but cannot be sued? Common sense shows that that is morally and fundamentally wrong. That immunity clause in our constitution is a curse and as long as it is there, it serves as a constant reminder to people in power that they can do anything and get away with it. It fosters corruption.

Honestly corruption is an institution in Nigeria.

Besides, don't forget that he finished an embarrasing 6th in the league - and before you blame AVB for that, you must also remember that as at the time of AVB's sack, Chelsea were in 5th position. So you can't say Di Matteo improved Chelsea's leasgue form; if anything, he worsened it.

Having said that, and in light of the sheer fact that he managed to win the coveted UCL, the only fair thing to do is to give him at most a year 'probation' contract to see if he is indeed a good manager that can challenge for the league and all the other competitions. Don't forget also that the primary task Abramovich wants the next manager to achieve is to rebuild the team with new players and make the team's style of play more positive and entertaining. Regardless of Di Matteo's unprecedented luck, it is clear that he does not seem to have what it takes to achieve this difficult long-term task - not with the embarrasingly negative and ugly tactics Chelsea used to overcome Barcelona, Liverpool, and Bayern by sheer luck. The best thing is therefore to give him a short contract to see if he can prove himself. That is what our Big Boss Abramovich has done. What in the world is wrong with that?

He certainly didn't become so rich and successful by being foolishly sentimental. He has to take decisions based on empirics and critical evaluation of things.
