By Henry Umoru ABUJA — CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Gil Emeka Nnaji, PDP, Enugu-East has warned providers of Global System for Mobile Telecommunications, GSM, to improve on their services to Nigerians or face the risk of being pushed out of the country. According to Nnaji, the Senate was ready to invoke the necessary legislative provisions to make the GSM operators in Nigeria sensitive to the sufferings of the masses on the poor quality of telecommunication service, rural telephony and fixed lines, adding that if they fail to improve on their services, they should be prepared to leave the Nigerian business environment. Nnaji, who spoke at the committee’s public hearing on the deteriorating service by GSM providers, described as unacceptable, the claims by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, that of all the telecommunication service providers, it was only the MTN that was presently making profit since commencement of operations in the country. According to him, Nigerian public deserves nothing short of the best in the area of telecommunications, considering the huge investments the Federal Government had made in the sub-sector, primarily in the aspect of tax holidays upon licence acquisition to enable the operators deploy sufficient infrastructure. Nnaji noted that the move became imperative following distress calls and messages from Nigerians about the incessant cases of dropped calls, bad network reception, unauthorised deductions of airtime. According to him, “the Senate as a responsive and socially-responsible institution, after series of interactive sessions towards addressing the lingering public outcry, subsequently decided to ascertain the level of culpability or otherwise of these network service providers on these issues with a view to advising the plenary appropriately.” A statement by Egbo Mon-Charles, Legislative Officer, Public Relations to Senator Nnaji, said the NCC boss, Dr. Eugene Juwah, in his presentation disclosed that NCC had secured the cooperation of the Federal Capital Territory Administration to provide more telecommunication tower sites in Abuja as part of the perfected plans to boost the quality of service within the FCT and its environs. He also revealed that based on the records made available to the regulatory body, MTN was the only operator making profit, adding that the absence of commensurate infrastructure to contain the ever-increasing subscriber base and lack of enabling regulations to enforce compliance on the operators, are the major challenges facing NCC in ensuring that the service providers offer Nigerians better quality of service. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/07/leave-nigeria-if-you-cant-improve-on-service-delivery-senate-to-gsm-operators/ Oya Mukina 2 and Richieboy....declare the thread closed and post it as yours.... |

The years of anticipation for Diablo III have brought about a number of marathon play sessions since its release on May 15, but one fan's obsession with the game has proven fatal. An 18-year old Diablo III player in Taiwan was found dead recently after a 40-hour marathon session with the game, reports the Australian Associated Press. The player, who has only been identified as Chuang, reportedly booked a room at his local Internet café before diving into the game, not stopping for sleep or food the entire time. An employee of the café found him passed out on a table Sunday. He woke up when approached, but collapsed after a few steps and was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending, but authorities noted that the long period of sitting still could have created blood clots, which proved fatal. Sadly, it's not the first game-marathon-related death in Taiwan this year. In February, Chen Rong-yu had a fatal heart attack while playing in an Internet café in Taipei while playing online smash hit, League of Legends. Fellow players, though, didn't notice he had died for another nine hours. Deaths in Internet cafes are rare, but happen from time to time when players concentrate so intensely on their games, that they ignore factors like the body's need for sleep and food. Last year, a 30 year-old Chinese gamer died after staying up for three consecutive days, barely eating or drinking anything. And last August, 20 year-old Chris Staniforth suffered a pulmonary embolism after a marathon session on his Xbox. The deaths underscore the risk of game addiction, which more and more people are becoming worried about as the industry grows. http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/taiwanese-teen-dies-40-hour-diablo-iii-marathon-190451985.html |

Those officers I caught are very bad examples for the military’ BY OLASUNKANMI AKONI & MONSUR OLOWOOPEJO LAGOS – Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, arrested two military officers who drove on the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, lane. The two military officers, who were accosted on the BRT lane at the Outer Marina in Central Lagos, were Colonel K. I. Yusuf, who drove in an Army Green Peugeot 406 with registration Number BO1 – 150 NA and Staff Sergeant Adeomi A.J, who drove in a black Toyota Camry car. CAUGHT IN THE ACT…Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, (right) asking Colonel K. I. Yusuf why he drove on the BRT lane illegally, when he was apprehended being driven in an Army Green Peugeot 406 with number-plate BO1-150 NA at Outer Marina in Central Lagos, Tuesday 17th July Realising that the game was up, Col. Yusuf came down from his car, saluted several times and kept muttering: “I am sorry, very, very sorry” with the governor enquiring why, a senior military officer, Yusuf, chose to break the law instead of preserving it. Speaking after the incident, Fashola described as very unfortunate the fact that those who ought to stand behind in defence of democratic values were the ones violating them. Fashola, who noted that the highest level of the military command had expressed their commitment to supporting democracy and to subjecting themselves and their officers to the laws of the country, declared: “Those officers that I caught today are very bad examples for the military.” The governor said he had already made a representation to the superiors of the culprits, expressing optimism that they would be sanctioned appropriately. He, however, added, “But it signifies my commitment and the commitment of the Lagos State Government that all those who will not comply with our laws should leave our state. We will not back down”. “There is a zero-tolerance for lawlessness. There is zero-tolerance for breach of our regulations and we are going to do more of this. We are going to take control of our traffic. We cannot build our way out of traffic congestion; our responsibility is to manage traffic and manage congestion.” Insisting that people must behave themselves, Fashola declared, “I don’t use BRT lane, I sit in traffic and I expect everyone who wants to drive his car to do same. The alternative is to use the bus. “The bus is for those who cannot afford to buy cars. They have the right also to use the road and we cannot encroach on that lane which we have reserved for them. This is democratisation of the road and I will defend it.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/07/fashola-arrests-col-sergeant-on-brt-lane/ The man mean am oh!!! good one Fashola

Many have complained about the craze by some Nigerian who engage in extravagant spending during burial ceremony for dead relatives who, in most cases, did not “enjoy” while living. Permit me to say women are generally believed to be more guilty of this act. Olufamous.com gathered that another young Nigerian family has been thrown into double mourning as a result of the inability of the man of the house to provide enough money for burial. A 34-year-old undergraduate of the Ekiti State University, Danusa Jimoh, has beaten his 31-year-old-wife, Mopeto to death in Are-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state. Jimoh, from Okene in Kogi State, according to the Ekiti State Police PRO, Victor Babayemi, committed the act in the course of a domestic disagreement on July 3, 2012. The couple reportedly fought over the inability of the man to give the wife enough money for the burial ceremony of her late father. The suspect was said to have given the woman some amount of money she considered inadequate for the ceremony. Jimoh said his wife, who hails from Ijero-Ekiti, hit her head against a hard object while they were fighting and passed out. He revealed that he was usually having quarrel with his late wife over sundry issues and that on the fateful day, it was the issue of money for the coming burial event that led to a fight. He said his mother had to give the deceased some money to augment what he gave her when she said it was not enough to finance the burial ceremony, but that she was still adamant. The couple is blessed with a child… Jimoh is expected to be charged to court soon. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/07/09/34-year-old-undergraduate-beats-wife-death-money-owambe/ Things are happening sha!!! |

Kobojunkie speaks the truth..let us turn to the glories of the day Kobojunkie: I think Nigerians should at this point IGNORE this issue until Otedola readies himself for what it is he really wants from this. I think we have wasted enough of the Nation's time on this "mundane" issue. Farouk should remain on suspension for along as this case is dragged on for. At the same time, the story should taken off the front pages until the Otedola side makes up it's mind on how it wishes to proceed with it's case against this man. |

A member of the House of Rresentatives Ethics and Privileges Committee, Hon. Ibrahim Bello at the weekend said that Chairman Zenon Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola denied releasing the audio tape of his purported telephone conversation with Hon Farouk Lawan to media station. Bello, who disclosed this to newsmen said when the committee asked Otedola how the media got the audio tape, the Oil Magante quickly denied releasing the tape and also claimed that he had never discuss it with anyone. The Lawmaker said: “When we asked him about the audio clip, he told us to even summon the media house and demand how they came about the tape. “He denied the audio clip. All he said at the meeting was that Farouk Lawan lied four times and that’s all. What I am saying is on record and we have it. It will be recalled that the House Committee is probing the $620,000 bribe for-clearance allegation between Lawan and Otedola. Otedola has accused Lawan, the chair of the House ad-hoc committee that probed the subsidy management fund of demanding bribe to get his company’s name off the list of those who got foreign exchange but imported no fuel. Bello, however, said rules are meant to be followed, irrespective of status, which is responsible for the insistence of the Committee to hold its sessions behind closed-doors He said: “Nobody can come and bend our rules. We don’t have any business with Otedola. I said it before his lawyer, who told him not to talk with us and answer our questions. He was only a witness before us and we told him categorically. We have ten lawyers in the ethics and privileges committe “But he came with a Senior Advocate who sat beside him and told him not to answer our questions. He didn’t know that Otedola was only a witness before us and we told him categorically “But the position of the Nigerian law as at today is that he who gives graft and he who receives are both culprits. You are not a member of the parliament and you were alleged to have given one of us something which is illicit, then, you are the best person to come before the Committee and tell us the true position of what transpired before you and him”. Bello said the importance of the case would not give room for laxity as the integrity of the House as an institution is at stake. “This particular issue is a unique case. As a committee, our business is the conduct of affairs of our members. But this matter is unique because it involves somebody who gave and somebody who took. The allegation is that somebody who is not a parliamentarian gave to a parliamentarian. “And we in the parliament want to ascertain the veracity of the claim. Are we going to import a demon to come and find out what transpired between Otedola and Lawan?” “It’s a matter whereby the onus is on Otedola to come before us and give us justification testifying to the fact that truly he gave Lawan graft because he is an accused person too by virtue of our laws. So, can you see the fallacy in this country? We don’t know who is protecting the accused person here. “He (Lawan) came and we interrogated him for almost four hours after giving his testimony he left, with the arrangement that whenever we need his presence he will come back. Now he (Otedola)is insisting that we should go into a public hearing”. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/07/09/faroukgate-otedola-denied-releasing-audio-tape-media-house-lawmaker/ |
