There's no gainsaying in the fact that Nigeria is country richly blessed with culture. From the sahara desert in the north to the atlantic ocean in the south, diverse cultures cut across different different ethnicity, tribe, regions and state.. However these cultures are perculiar to different tribes and as such serve as a symbol of identity. Language, the arbitrary use of signs and sounds for communication, is a key aspect of culture. There are 521 languages that have been spoken in Nigeria (nine of which are now extinct).[ The official language of Nigeria, English, the former colonial language, was chosen to facilitate the cultural and linguistic unity of the country. Communication in English language is much more popular in the country's urban communities than it is in the rural areas (comprising about three quarters of the country's population). The other major languages are Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Ibibio, Edo, Fulfulde, and Kanuri.(Wikipaedia) An average Nigerian tends to learn the language of his tribe (mother's tongue) first before the official language. Some who are opportuned to reside outside their geo political zone add the language of their residential state to their language portfolio...for the rest, it's just the mother tongue, official language and possibly a desire to learn another language that the fund fascinating....Unfortunately I happen to fall among this category... I'm from the east and I will like to learn yoruba......so what of u ?......let's hear it... Cc: lalasticlala |

9c job @ op..I hope these will help graduates who were not fortunate enough to make a 2.1 or a first due to one reason or the other. I believe these tips apply to everyone both undergrads (cos its never too early to start) and grads( irrespective of ur class of degree).....don't rest on ur oars and don't get too comfortable anywhere u find urself. Continuous self development is the key. Don t have a sense of entitlement cos nobody will give u a job cos u are a graduate. Finally for undergrads don't be deceived by comments like " I have a 2 friends , one graduated with a first and the other one , a pass, but guess what.. the guy that graduated with a pass is now a manager of a multinational coy and the first class guy is selling chin-chin in oshodi"....or ".....after all Bill Gates is a drop out"........ Circumstances are different, so try to be the best anywhere u find urself..... For the grads don't lose hope..mind the kind of company u keep..some friends are dream killers. They have no dreams and aspiration and they want to drag the ones that do down... |
While the points op listed might true, it doesn't apply in every case. Lemme me start by saying that one can't determine his postings while in camp unless u go thru the illegal way or u are in dance and drama grp . That being said, serving in rural/urban area have their perks as well as their downsides. It all depends on what u plan to achieve during ur service year and probably after. Since the OP has outlined the perks of serving in the rural area, I won't expend needless energy on it, instead I ll focus on the perks as well as the downnside of serving in the urban area . PERKS access to clean pipe borne water. I rank this one number on my list cos as they say water is life. Residing in the urban area will give u access to clean pipe borne water for cooking, washing and cleaning. This is hardly obtainable in the rural area where their only source of water is a small stream serving the entire community. steady internet access This will enable u to be upto date with current happenings, apply for jobs online, chat with ur friends on social media etc. Service life can be boring sometimes, so with the internet u can always find something to keep urself busy with. Electricity unless you have money to spend on PMS, the urban areas are still preferred to their rural counterpart when it comes to electricity. Imagine staying a whole year without electricity, mehn!!!!...though this is not the case in every rural area. job opportunities A stitch in time they say saves nine. Its better to start ur job search during ur service year than after and the urban areas will provide u with such opportunities. Coys are usually located in the urban cities. professional certifications For those who wants to use their service year to one certification or the other the urban area will provide u with the resources u need. postings to companies and govt parastatals Some corp members were lucky to be posted to some govt establishments, top private schools and companies were they are paid mouth watering allowance and some end up being retained by the org where they served. Social Life For those who are into partying, clubbing, and what not...na city sure pass. And yes u can get girls too, it all depends on ur package. DOWNSIDES 1. cost of living Utility bills, house rent( if ur ppa didn't provide u with one), upkeep, transportation, feeding etc can take a toll on ur monthly allowance. Every good thing comes at a price. So as I said earlier it depends on what u want to achieve during ur service year. Pls don't go to the rural areas just because u want to have sex with girls. There are girls everywhere and if u can't get one then u have a problem. That's my 3kobo. #sincerelybeing me...stay sharp |
@chiraz...I think making new freinds now especially @ this crucial point in ur life can be disastrous. It may may end ur marriage before it even start. You can't make friends just becos u need them for bridal train...what happens after the marriage?,,,,, Your approach to this situation depends on preference: (while some women are choosy, others can settle for anything.)..and financial capability of u and ur spouse(I believe u have a budget for the wedding) if u are the type that likes classy things, ur options are to use ur family members(if u are close to them) or ur spouse family members ( u know how sophiscated they are), u cam also ask ur fiance' brothers or cousins to bring their gfs( ur husband can help in that aspect)..or u simply hire. |

standd:@ bolded..whatever you mean by that. Is easy to stay in the comfort of your fully air conditioned room, lying on a 15 inches mouka foam with your ipad or apple laptop and preach "unity"? Did you or anybody related to you experience the 1966 massacre in the north that left thousands of easterners dead and the more fortunate ones displaced?...don't stress your pretty little head. I know the answer already. Guess what, some families are yet to recover from that inhumane and barbaric act. Some lost their breadwinners, some families were totally wiped out, some lost properties worth millions. How do you expect those families to just forget, and pretend as if everything is fine. So you want to know my stand, I will tell you. ONE NIGERIA IS THE BIGGEST SCAM EVER |
Nice one OP, though I detect some tribalistic undertones in your narrative but I will spare you some blame. Saying that disunity, hate and bigotry fuelled by tribalism will be the very bane of Nigeria-the most populous black nation is just stating the obvious. Despite your noble effort and that of other similar minded individuals like you, calling a dog a bird will not make it grow wings. Tribalism has come to stay ,and guess what his rent is not expiring anytime soon. |
Thank God for women like you. I guess ur story will inspire some people who suffer from one addiction to another to confront their problems. |
vislabraye:Judging by the shape of your head, I think I ll stick with the theory. |
