In hidsight, Oduah's first eighteen months was equally not easy in the hands of her own people. Some of us, like it's being witnessed now on Chidoka, castigated the poor woman to the extent that nasty words were used on her person. There was so much nostalgia about her predecessor Fidelia Njeze. But today, Oduah has gone down as the most productive minister for the Igbo nation.

Lessons learnt: A highly political and controversial position like that of the Minister of Aviation in Nigeria means an appointee should be given a little break to adjust to the job and most importantly the politics that comes with the office.

OK, let's assume for a second that Chidoka was quoted right, Is the new AIIA under going remodeling? No, it is not in that classification.

If there was any power left in the Caliphate, GEJ wouldn't be in Aso Rock let alone feathering for the 2015 polls. Chidoka is a Coal city boy. He knows what is at stake; just give him time.

Read president Jonathan’s speach at the World Igbo Congress Day, Houston – USA

"In the aviation sector, the Akanu Ibiam International Airport has started living up to its name, taking travellers from all over the world and vice versa, direct into the Igbo hinterland. Efforts are now on to expand the airline flight traffic in order to address the high demand, and a new befitting International Airport Terminal, under construction. "

I'm glad the president is mindful of the need to increase the traffic at AIIA. Osita Chidoka should now get serious with attracting more international airlines into Enugu.

Aventures: You are not wrong, there are several methodology of pile fdn construction, one of it is the hammering of precast pile, but that is done in a rare case because of the severe environmental impact and more so, it is very much more expensive and not really necessary for a project like this. The in situ casting is the best for this kind of project.you are welcome. Ride on to higher success as you pioneer the showcasing of hitech construction on this forum
Please, would the integrity of the piles be anything different if he were to use the more cheaper manual augering for the piling....or is it that the diameter might be difficult to achieve using that means? Some of the pile points do fail in cast-in-situ, how would one avoid it in this situation when they are not visible?

Energito: we dont need to be in S.E before becoming igbos, what we need is an Anioma Gov.
You're so much correct. Being a true Igbo is first of all a thing of the mind. Physical administrative enclaves should be secondary. The elite Biafran officer corps were from Anioma irrespective of the tactical decision made in respect of the map of Biafra. Yet they defended their father land and at a heavy price. Western Igbos are a great people with a long history. In 1937, two of their sons Denis Osadebay and Ogoegbunam Dafe muted the idea of the "Ibo State Union", together with Zik and Muokwugwo Okoye it bacame a reality. It later became what we all call Ohaneze Ndigbo today.

Some of us just have to learn to think like members of a majority ethnic group. Afterall, there are Hausa Fulani enclaves all over the North, even wanting to push down wards. Knowing who you are and identfying with the cause of your people is much more important. All would have been well If the same spirit was in Rivers state.
Politics › Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by kostadinis: 10:59am On Aug 23, 2014
passion007: I'm often surprised when Igbos kick against state creation in today's Nigeria. For one thing, state creation will bring development nearer the grassroots. Anioma will pay better attention to Asaba, Adada will pay better attention to Nsukka and so on. Unfortunately, regionalism is dead... the confab also made no effort to resurrect it. In Nigeria of today, how much you get and how much weight you throw around ultimately depends on how many states you have. That's why the NW can bully the rest of the zones. And the homogenous SW with 6 states has a decided political advantage.
If in the future we choose to return to regionalism, then I'll have no qualms about Igbo states forming a merger. But this present system will shortchange us if we opt for a merger.
You're not alone. It's very clear the Aboki understands the dog-eat-dog game that is Nigeria more than us. Revenue is shared according to states and local government areas and here we are arguing whether states creation is of any benefit to Ndigbo. This is while the South east is losing out every year in trillions of Naira. What about the aspect of political representation at the two chambers of the National Assembly? Voting on those resolutions that would affect our socio-economic lives?

cjrane: The port in Obiaku, Abia state holds the ace. If you have ever closely looked at the Nigerian map, that river in question is about 500 to 600 meters wide and flows directly into the ocean via the Onne port, without the usual bends and dissipation as small tributaries other rivers have as they approach the ocean. A little dredging will do the wonders.
The other one that holds promise is the Ibeno Beach in Afikpo on the Cross river. That may require a lot of dredging though to have it functional.
The Onitsha port has the advantage of being situated in a commercial city. Thus whatever it costs to bring goods there may be absorbed by business men. But the disadvantage is that the numerous tributaries to the ocean are narrow and full of bends.
Either way, do not believe the manipulators that lie to you that the SE has no access to the sea. They exactly know these routes and have been working silently to use state creations to close them completely.

Imagine that they want to create an 'oil rivers state' yet they want Igboland oil areas as Andoni to be included ! It's not just about a desire to seize all the Igbo oil producing communities along the southern River Niger, it is also about their desire to completely remove Igbo control from parts of our land leading to the sea. So that their lie that Igboland has no access to the sea can finally be achieved.
Andoni is a non Igbo speaking community different from Ndoni but all in Rivers State. I think Ibeno beach is in Akwa Ibom while Unwana beach is the one on the cross river in Afikpo, if I could remember. I thought the Azumini river at Obuaku empties into the Opobo estuary at a short distance through tiny Annang villages. I doubt the Onne angle to it...I don't think so.

Concerning the Oil Rivers state issue, I don't forsee any change in the mentality of the Igbo communities down there. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that we are dealing with a bunch who still feels it's cool to deny their identity.

I was born and brought up at Fegge area of Onitsha, and at a time the area was dominated by the Ogbaru people. There was a large Ndoni (Ndi Onuiyi) community and even Ukwuani. Many of their kids were my school mates and both our parents interacted very well. The Ndoni community was like any other Igbo community residing then at Onitsha...infact, i really weep for Ndigbo. Nigeria is a bad news, it has destroyed the very fabric of the Igbo nation.

I don't know how many people in Igboland that are still aware that Ndoni has a strong historical affinity with Nnewi in Anambra state. The male arch divinity of Nnewi community, the EZEMEWI deity, has its origins in Ndoni. My maternal grand father used to recall how the EZEMEWI was greeted in the old days with the chantings "Ugiri nwe onye Ndoni, Ugiri nwe onye Olu!". And the story of visits and cultural exchanges through the creeks of Oraifite via the River Niger. All that have disappeared in crude oil politics.

Back to the main subject. At the moment Ijaw is desperate for one more state and couldn't find enough land space and people to secure the deal at the Confab. The SW, Edo and Itshekiri have refused to cede parts of their lands. Hence with GEJ's nod, they decided to swap the Orashi state that was initially approved for Egbema, Ahuda, Ogba and Ndoni for an Oil Rivers state with the sole aim of consoling the Ijaw with the new state's capital at the coast - infrastructure advantage. This move will however render the current Rivers state landlocked while usurping parts of Akwaibom state. I don't know if am correct but the new map appears to indicate so.

This being the case, the most effective method ever deployed to cut Ndigbo's route to the sea was the use of Ndigbo to achieve the act. This has proven to be potent since 1970. Come to think of it, if the Odilis and Nwuches in Ndoni and Ahoada are keeping quiet, why should anyone lose sleep over an Oil Rivers state?

Obuaku in Abia state is afterall less than 10 nautical miles to the sea, closer than the PH wharf to the sea. There's every reason for every Igbo to celebrate this moment of hope, over the up coming three new states in the Igbo heartland. Especially Nsukka for me, which I have read about its temperate climate. I can't wait to see this town develope into a beautiful state capital. The great Zik must have enjoyed so much of the weather.

Solid blocks, 6 columns and thick plastering..... I trust my Oga's judgement

cjrane: Conjectures and primitive fears are the problem we face in Igboland which were unfortunately inherited from our mentality of dealing with the cheating going on in Nigeria. I remember when some transporters rallied together to frustrate an airport in Oba or anywhere in Anambra claiming it will ruin their business and take ALL their passengers! grin
Since Asaba airport, we know how false that conjecture was! Same way Yorubas screamed that an International route in Enugu will kill Lagos airport! I am waiting for the day that there would be no passengers in Lagos because of Enugu! The funny thing is that a second intl. airport is bring built in Lekki, yet nobody is complaining that it would take Lagos airport passengers!

Ask yourself why does the International airport in Cotonou and Lome survive since there is a bigger intl. airport in Lagos less than 100 miles away? The truth is that international airlines don't conduct business like motor parks. They look at the routes versus the passenger traffic.

So eventually, Asaba will be a busier intl. airport than Enugu, but will not stop Enugu from operating. Just as Asaba will evetually be busier than Kano, PH and Abuja, but won't stop people from using those airports.
It may have Emirates and Many Eastern sirlines which may be preferable for traders going to Dubai or China, while other Igbos in the Western Hemisphere may prefer Enugu via KLM, Air France etc. remember that 90% of Igbos in the Western Hemisphere prefer connecting from Lagos, because Addis Ababa is way too far.

So there is room for every city to grow. The unfortunate mentality that we have inherited from Nigeria that I can only make it by killing you is indeed an unfortunate conjecture.
Part of being a developed mind is the ability to examine issues from different perspectives. A little SWOT analysis on an issue like this is quite normal grin There is nothing 'primitive' in discussing the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats to the two promising airports in Igboland. We can learn one or two things by confronting ourselves with the issues we don't like or want to talk about. Such is the essence of here. At the end, the beautiful thing is that a future international operations at Asaba airport visavis Enugu is being discussed. All to the benefit of the greater Igbo nation.

Afam4eva: I attest to the delusion of grandeur that some people have alluded to. That was how some people were saying sometime ago that Enugu does not need skyscrapers because it blocks fresh air from flowing and thereby makes the city unliveable and i'm like WTF? Because we don't have something doesn't mean, it's bad. Let's learn to appreciate what we have while hoping for things to get better. Enugu is a good city relative to other cities in the SE especially and it is one of the most serene cities in Nigeria. That being said, Enugu still has a long way to go to catch up with major cities in other parts of the country talk more of cities in other parts of the word.

Enugu is growing in a certain pattern that i'm not happy with. if you notice the pictures being posted here daily, you would notice that they're mostly pictures of residential buildings and i ask myself, if Enugu is actually a city, shouldn't we be seeing pictures of skyscrapers or atleast tall buildings? The reason why Enugu is growing the way it should is that there's no concerted effor which should come from the government to make Enugu a pride city. it is a pride in some parameters which i alluded to earlier but it still has a long way to go. We need a business district (not a shop or kiosk district). We need an industrial hub. We need to invest in Media, Information Technology, Education and make Enugu a place that people will want to visit. Have you asked yourself why Enugu is not a top tourist destination as much as Calabar and Uyo or even Owerri. Unlike Enugu, these towns/cities draw people who come from all over the country to have a nice time. We know how the government of Cross River have invested heavily in the Calabar Christmas festival. We know how they have setup Tinapa in Calabar and how they have made the city the link to Obu Cattle Ranch. We know how Uyo has become the conference headquarter of the east. Everyday we hear how that city is hosting one conference or the other. Enugu despite not being a commercial or industrial city is not doing any of these. These are the things that Calm cities like Enugu are known for. Hosting important meetings and conferences and boasting of world class hotels. We need to take our expectations higher instead of deluding ourselves that Enugu is better than Kano. if it was better, how come you don't hear people from other parts of the country saying "I used to live in Enugu" or "My Famuily stays in Enugu" or "I'm based in Enugu" etc. That's because there's nothing that will keep you there. You're better off going to base in benin than staying in Enugu and that's the truth. We have a city that have promise and we have to nuture it and the government have to do their own part of the bargain.

Thank God the international airport is coming along. Thank God more roads are being built. We need a monorail or something similar. We need industries and businesses and not shops and kiosks. Big Igbo buisiness men should start investing in the east for God's sake. We need to put Enugu at a pedestal where it will compete with the best in the world. Enough of all this boasting. We boast a lot. Let's get cracking.
The AIIA is certainly the major facility that is expected to transform Enugu into a vibrant city. This said, the potential strategic threat to the AIIA by the Onitsha/Nnewi/Asaba industrial triangle is often neglected. The triangle is the fastest growing commercial/industrial axis in the SE/SS after the Trans Amadi ind. Layout in PH. This is so much so that the number of airlines flying into Asaba airport has surpassed Enugu in less than two years of the airport's operation. Overland, Arik and Aero are currently locked in a tight competition at Asaba as against two airlines to Enugu.

It wasn't long the Delta state government revealed the state's plan to start scheduled Asaba-Far East flights, especially to Singapore. This was instructive. It got many AIIA enthusiasts worried, but not everyone as the Onitsha and Nnewi chambers of commerce have had a good working relationship with current business savvy Delta state governor. On the other hand, Enugu and Asaba are two native Igbo cities. And so makes it tricky to say much on the subject.....reminiscent of the relocation of Nollywood to Asaba.

However, the fate of AIIA if an international flight was to take off from Asaba is better not imagined. Some form of agreement must have to be reached in this regard. But this can be quite difficult in view of the fact that Anioma state is yet to be created. It will be difficult to discuss such an issue with a non Igbo governor at the Asaba government house.

As the political capital city of Ndigbo, it is our collective responsibility to make the city of Enugu work. While banking on the AIIA, current and future governments of Enugu should strive to do more in the areas of FDI and industrialisation. Like you said, real investments.
