Then you begin to ask why his types can't be the CEO of a big economy as Nigeria. Then, the Nigerian factor dawns on you; shithole! |
Xander85:From what I am seeing, deputy governors have little or no input in policy making in Nigeria. Governor Nweze Umahi was the deputy to Martin Elechi who didnt do quite well as governor of Ebonyi state. How could Elechi have had a smart and strategic thinker as Umahi and didn't tap from his ideas for good eight years? Yes, what Umahi is currently doing in Ebonyi must have been in his thought box all through the Elechi years. South East is yet to have a tourist destination where individuals and families can relax in a clean, man-made lake/cannal with modern boat ride. South East needs it for God's sake. A facility as this would have made the Coal City a tourist destination but Sullivan Chime missed it. Ebonyi state is doing good. I can't wait to take my good friends on a weekend boat ride in Abakaliki. |
Fantastic! This is amazing. Where have I been all this while? Congratulations on this feat. You're a real man. Keep the flag flying. Cheers mate. |
Mike is one of the few good lawyers in Nigeria. Intellectually sound. |
[img][/img]When the first international flight took off from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu on August 13, 2013, it was expected that four years later, the airport would be servicing at least three more international carriers. This is because industry market analysts believe that the airlines would have international passengers from Aba, Enugu, Onitsha, Abakaliki, Nsukka, Owerri, Awka and other areas in the South East and South South zones of the country who would spend less than two hours to the airport and board their flights rather than travel about six hours to Abuja or Lagos to travel overseas. Also there are heavy cargoes coming from mainly Asia, where many businessmen and women from the South East region import goods from and it would be easier to move such goods from Enugu than from Lagos or Abuja because of proximity advantage. In fact, hauling goods from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport to cities in the South East is fraught with many challenges, including the loss or damage of such goods on transit, invasion by night marauders who most often maim and kill truck drivers on the highway, especially in the night. But after the elation of that first flight by Ethiopia Airlines, which has continued to maintain that route, no other airline has started operation from the airport. THISDAY spoke to the Manager of Enugu Airport, Mr. Mgbemene Orji, who explained why the airport has not attracted more international carriers, which also explained why even some local carriers are not operating the route despite passenger surge. Orji explained that the airport cannot operate 24 hours because of structural deficiencies at the airport, but for now it could only operate from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. The Manager said there is no enough water for firefighting because it is difficult to dig borehole at the airport due to coal deposits. Currently the airport management buys water from tankers everyday but this is not enough to provide adequate fire cover for large body aircraft or higher number of aircraft traffic. “Currently we are building overhead tank but it is nothing if we cannot source underground water, which will be in adequate supply to meet the fire cover needs,” Mgbemene said. He also noted that there are no approach lights, which are usually located at the two ends of the runway, about four kilometers before the runway. These are lights that guide the aircraft to the runway, especially in the night. “On one side of the approach to the runway, there is Orie Emene Market, which must be relocated so that the approach light can be installed. The other side of the approach is located at Abakpa Nike area of Enugu. The day FAAN engineers wanted to install lights at that area, the indigenes said they were not compensated for the land and therefore would not allow the installation”, he added. The Airport Manager also disclosed that there are two masts, one owned by Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) and the other by the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) at the Abakpa Nike end of the runway. These masts obstruct flight approach, necessitating that immediately the aircraft takes off it must bank right to avoid collision with the masts. This makes flying to Enugu airport more difficult during the Harmattan. But the Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe in reaction to the problems of the Enugu Airport said, “The Enugu State government had never been approached by FAAN in relation to the foregoing issues. Besides, most of these concerns are actually not areas state governments can statutorily delve into.” THISDAY learnt that more international airlines would be operating to Enugu if these obstacles were removed and the benefits of 24 hours flight operations to Enugu include more jobs for the citizens, the people travelling at their convenience and also more businesses coming to the city and environs. FAAN believes that the Enugu State government could help to solve these problems because it would be of immense benefit to the state and its people when more airlines begin to fly to Enugu, popularly known as Coal City. For example, Enugu stat government can settle the host community at the Abakpa Nike area so that the approach light can be installed by compensating them for the land even engage them to protect the installation and the state government can also relocate the Orie Market in Emene. THISDAY gathered that Emirates, Qatar Airways and some international cargo airlines may indicate interest to operate from Enugu if thee safety critical equipment is installed. “I am aware that there are plans by some cargo airlines to bring cargo from Dubai, Malaysia, China and other parts of Asia through the Enugu airport if the airport can operate for 24 hours. Most international airlines like to operate in the night to their hub so that they will start distributing passengers to their connecting flights in the morning. Night flights will really help the Enugu airport,” an official of FAAN told THISDAY in Lagos. THISDAY also gathered that there is job to be completed on the Enugu airport runway by Julius Berger, which has been called back to site and work on the terminal building is yet to be completed. “There is a subsisting contract on the runway and work on the terminal building so the Minister of State, Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika has called the company back to site,” revealed the FAAN official in Lagos. It is the view of many in the aviation industry stakeholders that the burden of managing the airports by FAAN has become cumbersome due to depleting revenue so state governments have been supporting the agency to maintain the airports located in their areas. So it is expected that the state governors in the South East, and especially the Governor of Enugu state should give support to Enugu airport to solve the aforementioned challenges so that the airport would improve its status to the benefit of the people of the zone and the state. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/11/03/actualising-enugu-airports-intl-status/ |
Chief Spyder, This looks good. Enugu state govt. is set to construct a housing estate in that location. I just read it. "Enugu state government has concluded plans to construct an additional 500 housing units for low income residents of the state. The new housing project, to be sited at Akpuoga-Nike, iS in adition to the first 100 housing units that were recently handed over to civil servants in the state" https://thepacenews.com/news/enugu-state-government-set-to-construct-500-low-housing-estate/ |
ArmedRobber:Igbo culture is complex and assimilative like other cultures around the world. The word Obi as it relates to authority, means a house in the Igbo traditional family. That is where the head of the family sits to welcome visitors and mediate disputes within his family and beyond. The earliest known people to use the word Obi in Igboland to address their village chiefs was Nnewi, 1200AD. About 500 years before Onitsha appeared on the scene. Dressing in white is not unique to any chiftaincy house in Nigeria. Akwa ocha as we call it, is prominent with the riverine/Northern Igbo. By the way, there is no mono culture. We are all a bit of one another in many ways and still evolving. It does not mean that those who wore "asho ebi" in Igboland today would be classified Yoruba tomorrow. Do you have any link of an Onitsha chief making those "sacrifices" in Benin? Benin empire was one time strong and trendy. It was about greatness and every community wanted to associate with the institution. The empire was tough enough to pick any individual from any community and make him chief of the people, and in line with the ruling structure/titles. Zik was like any other child told oral tradition. We could be pure Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Idoma, Edo etc., by tribal classification, but no one is by DNA 100 percent of these tribes. |
Keep supporting the fat, senseless and clueless slowpoke you elected as Governor while your people are being killed like goat... |
To act elitist by keeping quiet, is the highest disservice contributors to this thread are doing to our affected people. There should have been a robust discussion about the deaths at Ukpabi Nimbo here. Is it that the contributors here don't wanna offend someone or what? While we discuss the progress made in the state and region, we should also recognize the threats to the progress. Fact is, big businesses pay attenttion to SWOT analysis. Therefore, what is happeining is a threat to doing business in Enugu as a whole. This could also affect that your dream airport and the others. It was Awgu yesterday. It is Ukpabi Nimbo today. It could be the 9th-Mile, Emene or even Awka tomorrow. I am disturbed and saddened about a situation that is helpless. More so, when those who supposed to show leadership are asking the people to engage in 'fasting' as a solution to the horrendous massacre . I am still trying to figure out how this would deter the Sahel killers and keep our people safe. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's statement was shocking. He had better kept quiet. Yes, someone or a group out there is sponsoring these killers. It therefore behooves on our people to ignite their right to self defence. Nnsuka as a whole must rise up to the occassion. Organise self defence unions. Everything is available ...So whatever type of weapons they use in mowing down our people, use same against them. Don't wait for any politician. Mow them down with the same weapons! Excuse me.

The "terminal building" aspect of the news must have been through the grapevine. All the news on it so far did not say anything about terminal building as a pre-condition for commencement of operations. |
CFCman:You're so correct. But night landing facilities are the major impediment I suppose. And I believe they are aware of the issue before the announcement. So let's see what happens. On the other hand, the future is bright. The foreign currency policy of Buhari feared me the most for the airport, but appeared not to deter the passenger flow. The fact that Ethiopian jets still lands at Enugu says a lot about the airport's resilience. |
It's gonna be another great year for you. You're honest with money even as you're a hard worker. Congratulations |
CFCman: [b"]There is no other airline in West and Central Africa that flies direct to China," "We will use our airline to bring passengers from countries in West and Central Africa to Enugu and move them to China," Onyema said. "We are going to deploy a cargo plane that will do nonstop flights to Enugu," Onyema said. [ur]http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2016-04/15/c_135279650.htm It is a deft move by Barrister Onyema. South East Enugu is geographically good to serve as a collecting point for West-Central African passengers enroute Asia. Passengers from especially Cameroun, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea etc.would fit in here. Just the same way passengers from the Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast transits better from the South West airport of Lagos. So I believe there was a clear strategic vision by the board of Air Peace to announce Enugu as their hub. The same strategy has seen the Turkish Airline break even at Kano. Kano is the Turkish Airline's sub regional hub for Sahel countries as Chad, Niger and the others. They gather passengers from these countries at Kano and take off from their to Europe and Asia. Good for Air Peace, Enugu and the Eastern region. |
They read us. Our pleas to Igbo billionaires concerning AIIA is beginning to yield results. Enugu Airport as the regional hub of Air Peace international operations is a good development. Chief Onyema, the home boy of Ihiala, has done Ndigbo proud.

Wow, the whole thing is climbing with the speed of light With the environment looking so pristine I believe you'll be having good rest here I'm impressed |
Congrats! This is a bold step. I wish you well. Imere ofuma, maka na Obidigbo. |
ezeagu:Oh, thanks for the correction. But, go on and satisfy my curiousity |
ezeagu:I mentioned these specific towns to measure your knowledge of their political leanings, and you failed. Ukwuani is just one community and should not have been used as an example to buttress your garing misinformation. Do me a favor and tell me why the towns i mentioned were "loosers and questioneable"? At least, I was specific. And you said you "know" them. |
ezeagu:Then i guessed right; was another Nairaland gossip as usual. |
ezeagu:You didn't answer my questions, please. Educate me more on the "solid areas" and" looser and questionable". |
ezeagu:Let me take it town by town. How could anyone who said he's current with the ethnic politics of Nigeria doubt the resolve of Anioma towns as Asaba, Igbuzor, Ewulu, Akwukwu Igbo, Ogwashi, Nshiagu and their allies? Or Obigbo in Rivers state. The chances of the native of these towns voting yes to join a new country with their kins east of the Niger are even higher than some communities in the South East. This prognosis is highly misplaced. Did you personally conduct a field study of these commiunities or you just wrote drawing from the comments of a faceless forum? |
These Igbos must be a very important segment of the arranngement Nigeria. Just take a look at how other people whose culture and tradition are not close to the Igbos are just KEEPING VIGIL over their matter and that of those who are related to them Unbelievable. Wow! |
fratermathy:What do you mean by 'when it wants to be'? |
Eastern Ijaw DialectsIt does mean that GEJ from Ogbia for example would not be able to discuss with Asari Dokubo from Kalabari in any lingual medium than English. This is unlike the Igboid group where those who had chosen to stick with their local dialects would naturally understand the central Igbo. An old woman from Ukwuani, Ikwerre or Agbor would not need an interpreter buying her wares at an Onitsha or Enugu market. |
IBETO TO BUILD A $390 MILLION CEMENT PLANT IN ENUGU Latest News Ibeto Cement in $390 million deal with Chinese firm 21 Oct 2015, 06:39 pm Chibuike Oguh Ibeto Cement in $390 million deal with Chinese firm News Highlight - The cement plant will have an installed capacity of 2.2 million metric tonnes. - Sinoma Engineering has become a Chinese contractor of choice for Nigerian cement companies. 0 Comments An Ibeto Cement Plant Ibeto Cement, a major cement importer, has signed a contract with a Chinese firm, Sinoma International Engineering, to build a $386 million cement plant in Enugu State. The cement plant will have an installed capacity of 2.2 million metric tonnes of cement per year and would be completed in 30 months, according to a statement posted on the website of the Chinese firm today. In June, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced the restriction of foreign exchange for the importation of certain goods, including cement. This measure, perhaps, forced Ibeto Cement to ramp up its local production. In 2012, Ibeto Cement acquired majority shares in Nigeria Cement Company, a comatose cement-manufacturing firm located in Ebonyi State. But the state government shut down the plant, claiming that Ibeto Cement used the plant to acquire import licenses instead of resuscitating the plant. With Ibeto’s new plant, Nigeria’s installed capacity is expected to rise above 40 million metric tonnes per year, far beyond the local annual consumption of over 20 million metric tonnes. Many cement plants in Nigeria operate below their installed capacities as a result of the rampant importation of cheap cement mainly from China, inadequate gas supplies to power cement plants and high haulage costs. In September, Dangote Cement slashed its cement prices in an attempt to boost local consumption and compete with cheap imports. This move led to an industry-wide lowering of cement prices by cement companies to maintain market share. The cement industry in Nigeria is dominated by four companies: Dangote Cement, the market leader, Lafarge Africa, BUA Cement and Flour Mills of Nigeria. Nigeria’s cement industry has benefited from the federal government’s backward integration policy, which was initiated in 2002 to encourage local production of cement. Since that time, more than $6 billion in capital projects have been launched. With the Ibeto Cement deal, Sinoma Engineering has become a Chinese contractor of choice for most Nigerian cement companies. In August, Dangote Cement signed a $4.34 billion deal with the Chinese firm to build cement plants in 10 African countries and Nepal. In September, BUA Cement signed a $600 million deal to double the capacity of its cement plant in Obu, Edo State. atbu1983:No, from the PH uprising what the Niger Delta youths are saying is that it is too late...they want to be free from a greedy and reppressive Hausa Fulani state called Nigeria. The message is very clear from their names. These are not illiterates, they're educated youths. Abagworo: Here are the names of those arrested |
Truckpusher:I have asked God to place his miraclous hands on people like you to cure their chronic ignorance. Tell me what you know about Ndoni (Ndi Onuiyi)? The Monikker 'IGBOSON' is a full blooded Ndi Onuiyi man, and i'm sure he purposely decided not to respond to a rambler. Well, briefly, Ndoni are Igbo people of the Ogbaru clan. They share spiritual kinship with Nnewi people of Anambra. The supreme deity of Nnewi people ( EZEMEWI) came from Ndoni. Ndoni was not originally in Rivers state but in the former East central state. It was an Hausa Fulani man named Maman Nasser that actually decided their present fate and carved them into Rivers state. This happened simultaneuosly with Obigbo and Egbema, leaving one half of Egbema in Imo state. You might well be educated from what you taught was 'falsehood'. |
gykes:A true ikwerre should have known the tribal components of Rivers state and here you failed woefully. A true Ikwerre should have known about Ogba, Egbema, Ndoni and Obigbo. These are Igbos of RIVERS STATE. On the other hand, NOT all Ikwerre deny being Igbo. Isaac Mahowu the Deputy President of Ohaneze Ndigbo is a proud igbo man and a lot others. Diobu is a historically well documented Igbo enclave of Aro ancestry. All Ikwerre and Etche deities are IGBO including the Ojukwu of Diobu. So, what the hell are you talkng? Go learn your history and geography. Na afoto onu! Nonsense! Or better still, learn from your brother HopeAtHand. He misbehaves most of the time but will readily admit that Ikwerre "were once Igbo". And that "Diobu is of Aro ancestry". With respect to the Okirikans, PH and Rivers state smacks of Igbo. |
ARROBA:Please, disabuse your mind for it never happened. Since her maiden DIRECT flight to Enugu, ET has NEVER dropped Enugu bound passengers anywhere other than the Coal City. Even the Buhari foreign currency confusion could not dampen the spirit of the business travellers who patronize AIIA. Yes, the foreign currency restriction was felt the first four weeks which made ET deploy her 737s. But, right now, the 752 and 763s have returned to the Enugu route. |
spyder880:Here comes another one...Congratulations. Will follow quietly. |
spyder880:You're so much correct. Land prices are quite scary in the old Enugu. Nike is the remaining frontier. Seem to be the right place to build the real estate portfolio of now and the future. I only wish the greedy Abuja politicians and the mega real estate companies would not grab all the lands before the average investor gets started. I thought about the Elim Estate a while ago. I believe it was GEJ who commissioned it last year. The Vivian and Elim estates are success stories, of which they would influence any other one to be sited within the Nike-Opi Nnsuka road axis. And that means this particular one would not be different. Just make sure you conduct a thorough background checks. Good luck. |
Spyder, In fact, the whole of Nike is experiencing real estate boom! What amazes me is the speed with which the area keeps appreciating. My friend at Ibagwa Nike called to inform me that a plot in that vicinity now sells for 4 Million. I was marveled at the appreciation given that a plot sold for 1.8 Million at the time he bought his in December 2013. (though you brokered the transaction) I'll implore anyone who's interested in this latest estate to make up his/her mind. The whole of Nike is steadily looking good. It's a gold mine for developers and speculators alike. What's more, Ako-Nike is very well located. So, guys, go for it! |

Unbelievable. Wow!
