The fact that you are trying to rationalize it already means there's something not right about the practice. Culture is made for man not man for culture. Some of our cultural practises need reviewing in the face of modern realities. The issue of outrageous amounts of money to get married (bride price) is something that needs to be phased out .


Methinks a legislation is needed to compel families to lower their demands from their would-be son-in-law. No amount of money or materials can be equated with a human life. If you ask me to bring N3m to marry your daughter, does that mean that is how much she is worth to you? If she's truly valuable to you then her worth should be priceless.
