Jobs/VacanciesReducing Unemployment Among Youth In Nigeria – Acquire Technical Skills! by kunlef1(op): 2:24am On Jul 23, 2017
Despite the complaint of youth unemployment in Nigeria, has anybody pondered why so many jobs that require technical skills are so scarce among Nigerian youth? In fact, most of the technical jobs around now are being taken over by young men and women from neighbouring West African Countries e.g carpenters, masons, tilers, generator repairers, electricians, tailors, hair dressers, mechanics, AC repairers, and so forth. Many of these guys are making good money in Nigeria, and their service is not cheap. The truth is that these guys tend to do a much better job than most Nigerian technicians. A lot of Nigerian artisans, especially those in Lekki-Ajah axis of Lagos charge outrageous fees for crappy services in most cases. Infact, it seems many times, it is the least qualified people that tend to flock to this part of Lagos just to make quick money, because I heard there are much better artisans on the mainland, and also outside Lagos.
In Western countries, artisans easily make as much, and even more money than most office workers. In addition to being their own bosses, they work any time they want to, and can even afford to go on vacations. Lagos, or at least the Lekki -Ajah Axis of Lagos is becoming like that too. Nowadays, fashion designers specializing in women wears can charge anything from N5000 – N50, 000 for sewing exactly the same dress in this part of Lagos. It is all about neighbourhood and packaging! Unlike in the past when you need 2 – 3years as an apprentice in a tailor shop, you can go to a fashion school for just 6 – 9 months, and you have all the skills to start your own fashion business. That is why many women of all classes and levels including ex-bankers, lawyers, teachers, housewives, etc. are all flocking to Fashion Schools nowadays to learn fashion design.

But what about the young men, especially recent graduates? For how long would they continue to wait for jobs that do not exist? I think acquiring a technical skill is the way to go. One key advantage of technical training is that your startup capital for most of them is low, because you can start with the basic tools first, and then buy more expensive equipment later, just like fashion design. The main asset you need is the skill itself, and if you are good, the sky is your limit. One of my Cotonou generator repair boys used to have Clients in Togo, Ghana and Nigeria that he provides service for regularly. Now, he has made so much money that he has gone into importation business back in his country. It is one of the boys he trained that repairs my generator now.
I am beginning to think that this is the time that educated Nigerian youths start thinking of acquiring these technical skills in order to deliver quality service better than these people from other West African countries, and charge professional fees too. Most people would happily pay a little extra to get quality and reliable service.

Some of the areas I have personally identified, that currently has acute scarcity of good technicians are:
1. Electronics Repairers – People with good skills in the repair of modern electronics and house appliances (LCD/LED TVS, Decoders, Inverters, DVDs, etc) are extremely scarce. Rapid change in technology has made most of our older electronics repair technicians obsolete. Only the Samsung and LG trained technicians seem to be doing this at the moment, and most of them work for those companies.

2. Sewing Machine Repairs – Most of the people currently involved in these are the people engaged in the sales of imported ‘tokunbo’ machines. The good ones among men are usually much older men. With the rapid increase in fashion design businesses and fashion schools, anybody with these skills now would have a good business for years to come.

3. A/C and Refridgerators Repairs – These people are also very scarce because the technologies are also changing fast. Most of the people trained in these areas in the past are becoming obsolete fast.

4. Almost every other technical skill, but the ones I highlighted above are the ones I have really noticed around where I stay.
As my own contribution to the society, I am thinking of setting up a technical training center around Lekki – Ajah axis to train people on these skills. I am interested in Sewing Machine Technicians and Electronics Repairs Technicians, preferably with a minimum of OND who can work as Instructors or Trainers. Of course, they have to be very good in the repairs, and not book knowledge only.

People who have attended technical colleges before proceeding with their education would be especially desirable. I do not mind if they are not currently resident in Lagos. If you know anybody, with any of these skills, kindly send their CVs to kunlad(at)gmail.com, Whatsapp 08059859728 or drop their contact details on this post. Skilled people from other West African countries are also welcome!

You are also welcome to make your contribution about other technical skill areas that you think are lacking in our society.

If you are also interested in acquiring any of these skills, you may also indicate which one on this post or send me a mail. Maybe, that would encourage me to start sooner rather than later!

If you know how to repair most types of sewing machines and you can train people to do so, kindly contact me. You must have a minimum of OND in any subject, but HND/BEng in Mechanical Engineering is preferable. Your main job would be to train other people to carry out the repair.

I want to set up a sewing machine training and repair center around Lekki-Ajah axis of Lagos. You do not have to be resident around there for now as accommodation may be provided if you are successful.

I would also consider a current youth corper or fresh graduate who is ready to send himself/herself on a training on it anywhere in Nigeria. I would be willing to refund the training fees after you are certified to do the job.

If interested, send me your CV to kunlad(at)gmail.com or Whatsapp 08059859728.

Science/TechnologyRe: Developing Small Scale Hydro-electric Systems In Nigeria For Rural Development by kunlef1: 2:19pm On Jul 16, 2017
Patrick,

I don't have a waterfall near my residence, but my house in Ibadan is on a slope with a large amount of water run-off at high speed during the rainy season. I currently divert the water off my compound because it has fallen the fence at the back of the house before. So, I can easily have a controlled diversion back into the compound if it would be of any use. The compound is about 100ft long (front to back), and I think the height difference between the front and back is about 3 feet, i.e a slope of about 1:33.

Based on your discussion I think I should be able to use a pipe to collect the water near the front fence, run the pipe along a wall at almost a flat level and release it at a height at the back fence onto a turbine generator near the back fence. I may also be able to run the pipe to empty into a plastic storage tank on the ground, and then have another pipe at higher elevation on the tank (say 2m above ground level) to release the water to the turbine.

The issues are:
1. Would the pressure at a height difference of about 2m be sufficient or higher elevation is required, which in this case may require pumping into an overhead tank?
2. How would the issue of mud in the flood water be taken care of to avoid clogging the pipes and system?
3. What are the other practical suggestion to make this work to achieve a reasonable power generation (3 - 5kw)?
4. Do you have an idea of the cost of the Pico turbine system?

I hope you and other people on the thread can let us jointly brainstorm about this.

Science/TechnologyRe: How To Install Solar Panels & Inverter For Home-step By Step Guide by kunlef1: 1:04pm On Jul 16, 2017
@Pelumi

Do you repair both pure and modified sine wave inverter? I have both to repair, although in Lagos now, but can take it along when next I am in Ibadan.

perloomey:
250w solar panel is not enough to charge a 200ah adequately
let's do some mathematics
a battery is 12v 200ah= 2400wh
the battery can only give u 80% of it's life span which is 80% of 2400=1920wh
in Ibadan we've 4hours of good sun
so divide 1920/4= 480w
if u use 250w it will take close to 8hrs to charge a battery full

PropertiesLooking For Fenced Plot Of Land Along Lekki-epe Expressway For Long Lease by kunlef1(op):
I am looking for a piece land of about half a plot size (minimum) for long lease in a fully developed area. Ideally I would prefer somewhere between Agungi and Ajah or Sangotedo, and must be close to the Lekki-Epe Expressway, preferably directly on the street off the expressway.

It must be either outside an estate, or within an estate without restricted access because it is to be used for commercial purpose.

I may consider an outright purchase if it is affordable enough. The land must be fenced on at least 3 sides, except in the case of outright sale, or if you want to lease a portion of your residential land. I also don't mind if the land is bigger as long as the price is affordable.

The deal will be good for people with land along this axis, but have no plan to develop it yet, as this will help to secure the land. I do not mind if a security post, BQ or small structure is already existing on the land. I may also consider a land with a roofed carcass building in place, which I can adapt for my purpose. If you have any of the above, send me your offer to kunlad(at)gmail.com or WhatsApp 08059859728.

sarrki:
There is no elephant in gashaka gumti park
Are you sure about this? I was posted to that park for N YSC many years ago. Although I did not go inside the park then because of rainy season, and I subsequently redeployed. I was informed that some of the animals present, including elephants usually migrate regularly between Nigeria and Cameroon depending on the season. This is very plausible, because that is also what happens in the Serrengetti in East Africa. So, what I think is knowing the best time to visit to see the particular wildlife.
BusinessRe: Nigeria's Trade Data: See GDP, Top Imports And Exports Of Q4 2016 (Infograph) by kunlef1: 12:43pm On Mar 05, 2017
Can people see what I am seeing? Crude palm oil and cane sugar worth billions of naira are still being imported. These are areas that agric entrepreneurs and some state governments can look into.

I once heard that Adamawa alone can meet all the sugar cane requirements of Nigeria if it cultivates only 30% of the arable lands available.
InvestmentRe: Whats The Current Fixed Deposit Interest Rate For Nigerian Banks by kunlef1: 9:17pm On Jan 22, 2017
My advice to you is that instead of fixed deposit, you should consider Treasury Bills. You can invest for 3 or 6 or 12 months and get interest rates of between 15 - 19% per year. It is one of the means by which Federal government borrows money from the public.

But you need to find out the minimum amount to invest from your bank, but could be as low as 100,000 naira.

That is probably where your bank will invest the money too, and give you a third of the interest they get.

Cheers.

Kunlef.

Being able to put all the components in a box is definitely a nice concept!

But my only concern is that since wood is a combustible material, is it a safe material to be used as the encasement in case of electrical spark? Hope you have considered this in your design.

Also, isn't the price a bit steep if you add the individual components together e.g 0.75KVA Modified Sinewave inverter + 100AH battery is significantly less than 168K for the UD1 backup system.

Anyway, it is definitely a nice concept, and it is definitely encouraging.

Also, if you can look into the two issues I raised above, I will suggest that you also look at possibility of selling the cases alone to those who already have those individual component in order to expand your reach in the market.

Cheers.

Technology MarketInstructors Needed For Technical Training Courses In Ajah, Lagos. by kunlef1(op):
Due to limited number of qualified personnel capable of servicing and repair of most household appliances, particularly in the Lekki axis of Lagos, I am thinking of setting up a technical vocational training centre on the Lekki - Ajah axis. The areas to focus on in the first instance are as follows:

1. Electronics Appliances Repair (TV, DVD Player, Decoders, Blender, Microwave, etc)
2. Generator Service Repair
3. Air Conditioner & Refrigerator Service and Repair
4. Sewing Machine Service & Repair

The requirement to be an instructor is as follows:

1. Minimum qualification must be OND, but graduates of Engineering preferred.
2. You must have had practical experience in service and repair of any of the above (either learnt formally or informally through apprenticeship). Ex-technicians with major appliance companies e.g LG, Samsung, etc will have an added advantage.
3. It will be preferred but not compulsory if you are a resident of the Lekki - Ajah axis.
4. The job may be on full-time or part time basis.
5. You must have enough knowledge about the chosen field as you would be responsible for developing the course content from scratch, and advise on the necessary tools and equipment required to start up.

If you are interested, kindly send your CV to info(at)aquilaconsults.com or whatsapp 08059859728 and indicate the field you are interested in your email. Only people with the required qualification will be invited for discussion.
