President Goodluck Jonathan will lose the 2015 election because he is surrounded by greedy people and he has turned against the key people who helped his ascendancy to the presidency, Leader of the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force (NDVF), Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo has said. According to Asari-Dokubo, who was speaking in Abuja, it is no longer golden to keep quiet, considering that so many things are going wrong with Jonathan's presidency. He explained that although the entire South-South has always supported Jonathan, the time has come to break the silence on the Ijaw man's tenure at Aso Rock. "We must speak out on issues that are very critical to the survival of our people, the survival of the people of the South-South and the Southeast, which is the political base of Goodluck Jonathan," he said. "Jonathan is surrendered by very greedy people who are only in the presidency to enrich themselves at the expense of Goodluck himself. If we don't talk and we continue to brush it aside, tomorrow we will be blamed; and people will say: 'Mujahid Asari-Dokubo was around when Goodluck Jonathan was president, and he didn't talk.' Then I will be an accomplice and accessory after the fact." Speaking further, he declared Jonathan's 2015 presidential aspiration as an exercise in futility, saying he would lose because he has surrounded himself with people who drove away those who made big contributions to the political and electoral processes that enthroned his presidency, such as former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. "First, there was no need for Goodluck Jonathan to disagree with Olusegun Obasanjo. I don't like Obasanjo, I don't like his face, I hate him, but he was instrumental in bringing Goodluck Jonathan to power. "And the greedy people around Jonathan have not managed him enough, to the extent that they will allow Jonathan to disagree with Obasanjo openly. And if you check, all the people who supported Goodluck Jonathan and fought to bring him to power have openly disagreed with him." Asari-Dokubo lamented that that the South-South may not have the eight-year rule it has craved because there will be no magic about it if it is going to be one man one vote. He also said Jonathan's administration has achieved nothing to differentiate itself from past governments, even those that reigned before Independence. "For us, nothing has changed. It is still business as usual. Some of us are tempted to ask this question: why are all these things happening? Why has the president allowed some ministers like Godsday Orubebe to continue in government?" he queried. "Everyday people die on the East-West Road. If Orubebe is incompetent as he has shown himself to be, he should be removed. Nobody voted for Orubebe. And why is Orubebe so important to the president that he can't remove him even in the face of his obvious incompetence and several allegations to corruption." He expressed regrets that Orubebe, who was used to share the sufferings of the masses before his nomination for appointment as a minister, is now turning deaf ears to complaints about his ministry — the Niger Delta Ministry. "We have told him that if the president leaves in 2015 without the completion of the East-West Road, we are finished. The man kept telling us there is no money. "When IBB was there, there was money. When Abacha was there, there was money. When other people where there, there was money. How come the money disappeared when Jonathan got there? Orubebe will account for all the deaths on the East-West Road." www.ediong.org/2012/12/goodluck-jonathan-will-lose-2015.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+Ediong+(Ediong)&m=1

THE Presidency on Thursday said President Goodluck Jonathan’s closeness to some corrupt ex-convicts did not contradict any law of the land nor the administration’s anti-corruption war. “There is no law in Nigeria that says that a politician that has been jailed should not be going to the Villa and the Peoples Democratic Party does not have it in its constitution that he (the ex-convict) cannot come back to his party. “Maybe if they review the constitution and put it there, it will be wrong. But for now, it is not wrong,” Senior Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja. Okupe organised the briefing to speak on the President’s commitment to the war against corruption, barely 24 hours after the global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, in its 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index put Nigeria as the 35th most corrupt nation in the world. Okupe was asked if the President’s closeness to those who had been convicted for corruption was not an indication that the President was not serious about fighting the scourge. He was asked to defend the frequent visits to the Presidential Villa by the likes of a former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieseigha; a former governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion; and a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George. All had served jailed terms for corruption charges. Okupe answered, “There is no law that says if this man goes to jail, he cannot be a party member. “Have you seen Bode George or any of these people and the President kissing or eating on the same table? “If they meet at a political forum and Bode George is a leader of the party in Lagos and there is no law in Nigeria that says he should be isolated. “Chief Obafemi Awolowo, did he not go to jail? People go to jail for different reasons.” But when he was reminded that Awolowo did not go to jail because of corruption, Okupe sidestepped the observation. Rather, he said, “There is no law in Nigeria that says that a politician that has been jailed should not be going to the Villa and the Peoples Democratic Party does not have it in its constitution, that he (the ex-convict) cannot come back to his party. “Maybe if they (PDP leaders) review the constitution and put it there, it will be wrong. But for now, it is not wrong.” Showing signs that he was upset by the questions, Okupe said he was astonished that Nigerians and journalists did not deem it fit to commend the President for having the political will to arraign the son of the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, for alleged corruption. Mahmud, the son of Tukur and Nasir, the son of a former National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, are currently facing charges at a Lagos High Court for allegedly stealing billions of naira through corrupt claims under the fuel subsidy regime. Okupe said, “I’m surprised that you refused to acknowledge that the son of the serving National Chairman of the PDP has been arrested, has been arraigned and is undergoing prosecution. “If President Jonathan does not have the political will, that is a suicidal move. President Jonathan is a politician by definition and by standing. “If for instance, he intends to run in 2015 and Bamanga Tukur is the chairman, if he (Jonatha) does not have the political will he will not do what he has done. “That is an unprecedented act and he deserves commendation. “This is the man who will attend to the President if he needs something from the party. You are putting his son in the dock. You think that is not political will? Let us be fair to him.” Okupe also defended the retention of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe and his counterpart in the Ministry of Labour, and Emeka Wogu, despite allegations of corruption levelled against the two. While Orubebe was accused of receiving a house as a gift from a construction firm, Wogu was accused of using a company in which he had interest to benefit from the subsidy payment. Okupe said it was wrong to expect the President to remove government officials over mere allegations, adding that those making the allegations must be courageous enough to show evidence. “If the President fires every minister and every government official that people alleged, I doubt whether we will have 50 per cent remaining in government,” the presidential aide said. He said there were documents that showed that “the (Labour) minister has no link with the issue of the company that has to do with the subsidy.” Asked whether the reduction in the budget of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was not an indication that the Federal Government was not serious about the war against corruption, Okupe said no. He said there were so many competing needs and that it was the duty of the government to balance such competing needs and find the most comfortable balance to distribute its resources. www.punchng.com/news/okupe-defends-jonathans-friendship-with-vip-ex-convicts |

Senators yesterday criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for seeking $7.9 billion external loan to finance certain projects, saying he was leading Nigeria into a debt trap. Jonathan in February sought the inclusion of the projects into the Medium Term (2012-2014) External Borrowing Plan. Debating a motion on the matter presented by Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, senators said the borrowing would expose the nation to a debt trap. Senator Benedict Anyade (PDP, Cross River) said there was no basis for seeking fresh external loans when most of the projects for which huge funds were borrowed in the past were abandoned. He said resorting to foreign loans is a celebration of the inefficiency and lack of moral credibility. Senator Ita Solomon Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East) said most of the items for which loans were being sought were unreasonable because they had already been provided for in the 2013 budget. Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon (ACN, Lagos East) said the previous loans acquired from foreign institutions had not been used for the purposes intended, suggesting that the implementation of loans be monitored in order not to make the borrowing a burden on the coming generation. Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu said instead of being particular about the borrowing loans for the projects, Jonathan must focus on the utilisation of the borrowed funds. According to him, the US is the most indebted nation but it has been able to achieve results by utilising its funds well. “What is important in borrowing is the utilization,” Ekweremadu said. Senator Ahmed Lawan (ANPP, Yobe North) wondered why Jonathan was insisting on fresh external loans when the ones previously obtained had not been equitably distributed. Lawan also flayed the administration for failing to adhere to the previous external borrowing plan. In the same vein, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on States and Local Government Administration, Senator Kabiru Gaya (ANPP, Kano South) said he could not understand why the Federal Government was seeking an external loan of N244bn for the eradication of illiteracy in just three states. According to the borrowing plan submitted to the Senate, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, the president is planning to borrow $ 2.98 billion from the World Bank for such projects as growth and employment project ($140m), state health programme investment credit ($50m), electricity and gas improvement ($150m), erosion watershed management ($450m), polio eradication (95m), state education programme investment ($ 150m), food and waste management ($200m), among others. He is also planning to borrow $3 billion from the Exim Bank of China for Abuja light rail project ($ 500m), Zungeru hydroelectric power project ($ 765.7m), infrastructure projects ($1.6bn) and national information and communication technology infrastructural backbone project ($100m). Expected from the Islamic Development Bank is a loan of $672.8m for projects like bilingual education programme ($70m), Zungeru hydroelectric power project ($234m), Gashua water supply ($40m), upgrading of hospital facilities in Kaduna State (44.69m), science secondary schools in Kaduna ($ 17.32m), among others. From the African Development Bank, Jonathan wants to borrow $731.2m for Zaria regional water supply ($81.2m), development of FCT satellite towns ($300m), water resources and sanitation projects ($200m), among other projects. He also wants to borrow $56.61m from the French Development Agency for one single project on national urban water sector reforms. When debate was concluded in the Senate yesterday, Senate President David Mark referred the matter to the Committees on Finance and Local and Foreign Debts for more legislative inputs, asking them to submit their reports in a week’s time. dailytrust.com.ng/index.php/other-sections/lead-stories/180735-senators-to-jonathan-youre-leading-nigeria-into-debt-trap |

The World Bank on Wednesday warned that subsidy on petroleum products in Nigeria and other oil-producing African countries would be unsustainable in the medium term. It also predicted that lower oil prices would hurt Nigeria and other African oil- producing countries, noting that a repeat of the 2008/2009 financial crisis in Europe would curtail fiscal growth in many African countries. On the flip side, it said Nigeria was the sixth fastest growing economy in Africa in 2011, standing behind Ghana, Rwanda, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Mozambique ahead of Congo Republic, Zambia, Tanzania and Botswana. These warnings were contained in the April edition of the “Africa’s Pulse” magazine, an in-house publication of the World Bank’s Africa region. It was prepared by a 10-man team headed by the Chief Economist for the Africa region, Shanta Devarajan. It stated, “In 2010-11, over half of all African countries had some subsidy in place for fuel products, and these subsidies consumed, on average, 1.4 per cent of GDP in public resources. Of the 25 countries with fuel subsidies, the fiscal cost of subsidies in six countries — primarily oil exporters — was at or above two per cent of GDP in 2011. “The fiscal cost in oil exporters was almost two-and-a-half times the levels observed for oil importers. These costs have grown sharply in some countries in recent years. In countries facing substantial fiscal deficits and rising public debt levels, the fiscal space to subsidise fuel costs is constrained.” http://www.punchng.com/business/money/fuel-subsidy-is-unsustainable-world-bank/ |
One person was killed at a pub in Lagos on Tuesday night after a fight broke out between fans of Barcelona and Chelsea football clubs, while two others suspected to be Chelsea fans drove dangerously after the match resulting in a fatal accident. PUNCH Metro learnt that John Idoko, a 23-year-old boy, was stabbed to death at a makeshift pub at Shiro Bus Stop, Boundary Road, Shasha. It was learnt that the outcome of the football match, which favoured Chelsea FC, did not go down well with some Barcelona’s supporters. According to police authorities, an altercation, degenerated into fisticuffs and supporters of the two clubs some of whom were drunk, soon engaged in a free-for-all. The spokesperson for the state police command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone. He, however, added that no arrests had been made as no witness had come forward. He said, “On Tuesday, around 10pm, a report reached Shasha Police Division that one John Idoko was stabbed to death with a broken bottle during a match between Chelsea and Barcelona football clubs. “The owner of the pub said almost all her property was damaged during the fight as the fans went crazy. We don’t even know if Idoko was a fan of Chelsea or Barcelona “No arrest has been made as witnesses have refused to come forward but investigations are ongoing.” Jaiyeoba warned fun seekers to be careful when celebrating and remember their loved ones at home. The spokesperson also warned members of the public that the use of explosives such as banger, would not been tolerated anymore. He said celebration should be carried out in a peaceful manner, warning that the police would not tolerate any form of unruly behaviour. “The use of banger is illegal as well as any form of disturbing public peace,” he said. Meanwhile, the two people who died in the accident were driving dangerously in a commercial bus, popularly known as danfo, after the match. Witnesses said the occupants were fans of Chelsea FC celebrating their club’s victory. Jaiyeoba confirmed the two deaths but said it was uncertain whether they were football fans or not. “Around 11:30pm, a Volkswagen bus somersaulted and caught fire around Ojota end of Ikorodu Road inward Maryland. The two occupants were burnt to death” he said. http://www.punchng.com/metro/one-killed-as-barca-chelsea-fans-clash-in-lagos-two-die-celebrating/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan says he does not want to be admonished like a schoolchild. Speaking at a dinner in honour of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Monday, Jonathan however told the PDP executives despite being president he was not above the party. He said he and other members of the Executive arm of government as well as the legislature were ready to respect party supremacy. Jonathan said, “The President cannot be a king or maximum ruler, the President is elected by the party and must serve the party not the party serving the President. So, if he is deviating, the President must be cautioned so that all will know that the party is supreme and all must all follow the dictates of the party. “I am not saying the President should be admonished like a primary schoolchild. Nobody in the party from the President to the least person at the ward will be superior to the party. So, you have a lot of challenges in this direction to make sure that you instil that kind of discipline. We will give you maximum cooperation.” “The PDP is a political party and as a party, we must have guidelines and no matter the office you are holding, the party must be in a position to discipline or admonish Mr. President if he deviates. “In South Africa, the African National Congress can admonish the President because the party is superior. And that is why in the gathering of the party, the party chairman takes precedence in order of protocol. It shows that the President himself is under the chairman. Jonathan said he would not take issue with those criticising his administration, saying, “when you are in the ruling party, you must show more maturity”. The President said, “We must all work to create an avenue where the party will source funding so that if you are the chairman of the party, members of the working committee, you can manage the party without excessive influence of people. “Even though we expect all moneybags to be in PDP, but we don’t want the moneybags to influence the activities of the party and to stop that of course, we must come up with programmes that will make the party self-sustaining in terms of financing.” The PDP Chairman, Alhaji Bamagar Tukur, said the party could not be repositioned without internal democracy and discipline. He urged all party faithful to ensure that they do not work in cross purpose with the government. http://www.punchng.com/news/dont-admonish-me-like-a-schoolchild-jonathan/[b]President Goodluck Jonathan says he does not want to be admonished like a schoolchild.
