CrimePolice Rescue Kidnapped Philippino Lady Lured To Nigeria By Supposed Lover by Kwanza(op): 5:33pm On Jun 22, 2020
PRESS RELEASE

POLICE RESCUE ABDUCTED PHILIPPINO LADY LURED TO NIGERIA BY SUPPOSED LOVER

· Advises on a more cautious use of the Social Media

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has advised on a more cautious use of the social media by members of the public. The IGP’s advice comes against the backdrop of the successful rescue of a 40yr old Philippino lady, Irene Torento Panas by Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command at Neke-Uno Village, Enugu East LGA, Enugu State. The Philippino was rescued six (6) months after she arrived Nigeria from the Philippines in an apparent but unsuccessful search for love.

Irene Torento Panas, an Accountant by profession and a native of Manila in the Philippines arrived Nigeria in November 22, 2019 on a visit to one Chukwudi Odo ‘m’ 54yrs of Enugu Ezike in Igbo-Eze North LGA of Enugu State whom she met on Facebook on 8th March, 2017. The visit which was originally intended to be for 10-days however turned out to be a full case of abduction following Chukwudi Odo’s refusal to allow her return to her country against her will. She was held incommunicado by the suspect, Chukwudi Odo.

The victim who was critically ill at the time of rescue was successfully rescued by police operatives attached to the Unity Police Division, Ibegwa Nike, Enugu State led by the DPO, SP Siga Malgwi, following a tip-off from some members of the public in the area. She was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention where she was admitted from 5th June to 16th June. Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, Chukwudi Odo deliberately lured the victim into the country with the aim of confining her, sexually abusing, and extorting money from her.

The IGP, while enjoining members of the public to tread cautiously in their use of the social media, warns against any abuse of the cyberspace noting that such criminal acts will not go undetected and unpunished by the Force. Meanwhile, the Force is already in contact with the Embassy of the Philippines in Nigeria so as to reunite the victim with members of her family.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Giadom did not resign – APC National Vice Chairman by Kwanza(op): 12:05am On Jun 22, 2020
Nairaland GeneralGiadom did not resign – APC National Vice Chairman by Kwanza(op):
The leadership crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) took a new twist on Sunday when National Vice Chairman North East, Comrade Salihu Mustapha, said former deputy National Secretary, Victor Giadom did not resign but was given waiver to contest the deputy governorship election in Rivers State in 2019.

Mustapha dismissed the claims by some of his colleagues in the National Working Committee (NWC) that Giadom resigned.

He said the former Deputy National Secretary did not resign but was given a waiver to contest, adding he was also given a letter when he returned after the election to NWC.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu faulted Mustapha’s claim.

He said: “These two letters are invalid. They are as useless as the paper there are written on because neither the chairman or the NWC has the power to grant waiver on such issue”.

He further said: “There is no such provision in our constitution. If the Chairman has given such letter, it is irrelevant and invalid.”

According to Mustapha, the embattled former deputy seecretary was on September 14, 2018 granted a waiver by the NWC in a letter signed by suspended National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The letter, addressed to him and signed by Oshiomhole as presented by Mustapha reads,: “Re: Application for waiver under Article 31 of the APC constitution.

“I am pleased to convey the decision of the NWC to unanimously approve your application for waiver under Article 31 of the Constitution of our party.

“By the decision of the NWC to grant your application for waiver, you can continue to discharge your official duties as the Deputy National Secretary while pursuing your political campaign activities.

“On behalf of NWC please accept our best wishes”.

The other letter that Mustapha said the party gave to Giadom was signed by the Director of Administration, Abdullahi Yusuf Gashu’a on May 24, 2019 accepting Giadom’s resumption of office after the election.

The letter titled “Resumption of office as Acting National Secretary” reads: “I write to convey the resolution by the National Working Committee reached at its 37 regular meeting of 24 May, 2019 accepting your request to resume office following the conclusion of the 2019 general elections which you were granted waiver to contest as governorship running mate for Rivers State.

“The NWC has also approved your resumption as the National Secretary in Acting capacity in line with Article 14.4 of the Constitution of our great party pending the election of a substantive National Secretary.

“Please accept the assurances of the members of the National Working Committee”.

When told that the party has replaced Giadom with Mr. Worgu Boms, the National Vice Chairman said such action has no place in law.

He vowed he will resist it same way he resisted attempts on the Publicity Secretary and the Organising Secretary.

“I know some of my colleagues will not be happy with this submission but this is how I am built. I will not be a party to any injustice irrespective of who it’s meted on.

“The same way I didn’t support the ousting of the National Organising Secretary and the Publicity Secretary, I will not accept that of Mr. Victor. We are all colleagues we should be more focused on reconciliation not baseless witch hunts.”

Reacting to Mustapha, Issa-Onilu said:” There is no such waiver our party’s constitution and 100 of such letters been brandished by Mustapha or Giadom cannot contradict our constitution.

“The two letters are invalid. They are as useless as the paper there are written on because neither the Chairman or the NWC has the power to grant waiver on such issue.

“The only circumstance that our constitution allows waiver is only when somebody wants to join the party and NWC thinks that such a person is bringing value and he has not spent up to one year in the party, we can grant waiver”.

On the letter purportedly issued when Giadom returned back, Issa-Onilu said: ” that letter is resting in illegality. You cannot build something on nothing. If that letter was issued it was in error and it cannot stand the test of our constitution.

“Somebody who has resigned cannot be asked to act in the capacity of acting National Secretary. Comrade Adams Oshiomole lacks such powers. All the letters put together are still not strong enough to invalidate the provisions of our constitution.”

Adelami’s Thugs Shot APC Supporters, Vandalize Akeredolu Campaign Vehicles – APC Owo Group alleges

Thugs allegedly loyal to one of the Governorship Aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former deputy clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Olayide Adelami on Sunday shot at the members of the APC during a meeting around Igboroko in Owo, Owo local government area of the state.

The APC members under the Owo Youths Redemption Group (OYRG) led by Olayemi Olamide, were said to have held the meeting to declare the support of the group for the re-election of the state Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu Aketi, SAN.

Former member of the House of Representative, Omosule Eni was said to have led the thugs.

According to eyes witnesses, the thugs , numbering about fifteen in number stormed the venue of the meeting and started shooting sporadically into the air to disrupt the peaceful meeting.

It was learnt that when some of the members resisted their shooting and stayed , the hoodlums shot at them and carted away with their phones including that of one of the strong APC members, Ogunbodede Opeyemi’s IPhone and bag.

The group leader , Olamide who narrated the incident said;”At about 2pm around Igboroko here, we were holding our meeting as a group to declare our total support for the re-election of Governor Akeredolu when these thugs brandishing sophisticated weapons such as guns, axes and cutlasses arrived at the theatre of crime in two vans and a white pick up belonging to Eni Omosule

“The thugs fired gun shots sporadically in the open and destroyed Aketi’s campaign bus packed along the street. People scampered for their dear lives while the melee lasted for about an hour. The thugs had escaped to Adelami’s house before the police could get to the scene.

“It took divine intervention and human efforts of Hon. Lawal Fatai Olushina who paid the bill to extract bullets from the bodies of Ijalana Oluwafemi, Ogunbodede Opeyemi ,Idowu Ola Onibuore and one other person whose identity is yet to be identified. All the aforementioned people were hit by stray bullets fired by Adelami’s thugs.”

Olamide named some of the thugs as; Ayipada, Utu , Sussina, Elijah, Oje and Aboba OPC, adding that some otter members of the hoodlum were from Osun State.

He said the thugs even shot at the police at the scene of the crime.

PoliticsAPC: Why We Can’t Convene Emergency NEC Meeting - Eta by Kwanza(op): 8:51am On Jun 21, 2020
The Acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hilliard Eta, has insisted that inasmuch as the ruling party would have loved to convene an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to resolve the myriad of crises rocking the party, the violation of COVID-19 pandemic protocols prohibiting public gathering has made it impossible.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-South) also dismissed claims by former Deputy National Secretary Victor Giadom that he was given a waiver to contest in the 2019 Rivers State governorship election, insisting that Giadom was no longer a member of the National Working Committee (NWC), having resigned.

Responding to the clamour from party members to convene an NEC meeting, Eta replied: ‘It is at the root of all of the controversies; if there must be a permanent resolution to the mirage of controversies, then we must hold an NEC meeting. The NEC meeting is a statutory requirement of our constitution.

‘I do not believe that there is anybody afraid or scared of convening an NEC meeting. I think what has been militating against constituting an NEC meeting in the recent past is, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic that has stopped everybody from gathering more than a certain number of persons.

‘As you are all aware, we have over 120 members of NEC and it would amount to breaking the COVID-19 protocol as established by the Nigeria authorities prohibiting gathering of more than 50 people at a time. It will take our breaking that protocol for us to have an NEC meeting. But if it is possible to have a waiver so to speak to be able to have an NEC meeting, we can explore that.

‘There is nobody afraid of having NEC meeting. For those who want to build this party, who want this party to outlast this present government, they are such in number that there is no fear of convening NEC meeting. The only thing militating against convening it is, of course, the current world pandemic. There is no way the ruling party will voluntarily disobey or break rules it is part of making,’ he defended.

While taunting Giadom to head to court to reclaim his membership of the NWC, Eta said: ‘There is no way you can contest any election as a member or an executive officer of the APC without resigning your office. That is the constitution of our party. You can do that and return, but the NWC will transmit a letter to your zone, noting that in view of this vacancy predicated upon this, can you present someone to occupy an office that has been zoned to your own geopolitical zone.

‘I am the head of that zone, I have not heard any such letter till today from the NEC and I have not acted because there was no such communication. I have not been able to act because I cannot act on my own.

‘But in the wisdom of the NWC, which I am just the acting chairman, we had 15 members out of 20 in attendance that unanimously agreed that because Giadom had resigned to contest as Deputy Governorship, it is on record, we transmitted his name to INEC, he printed posters and he could not have done so, we could not have transmitted his name, he could not have campaigned for the position without first resigning his office.

‘The constitution of our party is not a voluminous book, it is just a few pages and it was stated that Victor Giadom, based on his resignation, has ceased to be a member of NWC. You can now find out whether anyone can be given a waiver from resignation.

‘We don’t even have it in our constitution anymore; we have deleted that part for political expediency. But we have it in our guidelines that if you are going to contest this kind of election that you must be a member of the party for a certain period of time.

‘That is the only place that you need a waiver, you cannot take a waiver for resignation. I am saying that if it was done, it was done in errors. It is a human organisation, susceptible to error. But it cannot vitiate the positions and the provisions of our constitution. I was not the national chairman until recently and if as acting national chairman I have discovered that errors were made I have to correct them.

‘If Giadom feels very bad or very strongly about what the resolution of the NWC, of course, like he is always doing, like his like are always doing, he can proceed to court, but that is the resolution of the NWC,’ he taunted.

PoliticsOshiomhole Remains Suspended, Etsako Ward Chairman Insists by Kwanza(op): 7:37pm On Jun 20, 2020
Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Etsako Ward 10, Edo State, Mr Oshawo Stephen, has dismissed claims that the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as a member of the party had been lifted, insisting that the ward executives stand by their suspension of the erstwhile National Chairman of the APC.

In a statement, Stephen said the ward executives, who were elected into office in 2018, remain intact and had not been displaced by anybody, describing the claims of the lifting of the suspension as a charade.

He said, “The suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by the ward executives remains valid. The statements to the contrary in the media are false and should be disregarded. We stand by our decision and have no reservation on the action as it is in the best interest of the party.

“The ward executives as well as our counterparts at the Etsako West Local Government level stand by the suspension of Comrade Oshiomhole for his divisive role in the crisis rocking the APC in Edo State."

Chairman of the APC in Etsako West LGA, Ezolomhe Rabiat, also affirmed that the local council executives were still members of the party in the state and stand by the suspension of Oshiomhole.

PoliticsOsun Extends Relaxation Of Curfew By 2 Weeks by Kwanza(op): 4:53pm On Jun 18, 2020
Osun: Oyetola extends relaxation of curfew by 2 weeks

‘We'll shut erring churches, mosques, markets, motor parks.'

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun, has extended the relaxation of curfew imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the State by another two weeks,
effective from Friday, June 19.

This follows the expiration of the initial two-week relaxation ordered by the Governor on June 5.Following the relaxation two weeks ago, curfew now runs from 9 p.m to 5 a.m daily.

Oyetola made the announcement in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan on Thursday in Osogbo, the State capital.

He, however, expressed displeasure at the level of compliance with some of the relaxation guidelines, especially the wearing of face masks in public places.

The governor, therefore, warned that worship centres and markets that fail to adhere to the guidelines would be shut down by the State government.

"COVID-19 is real and Osun is not out of the woods yet. We have noticed that many of our citizens are brazenly flouting the safety guidelines put in place to curb the spread of virus in the State.

"The government will not fold its hands while a few people jeopardise the mileage we have recorded so far in this fight. It is not yet uhuru and strict enforcement will commence immediately. Any worship centre,

market or motor park where people do not wear face mask or maintain social distancing will be shut down," the governor said.

He also reminded the citizens that the ban on inter-state travels remains in force, noting that any motor park that fails to comply with the directive will be shut down as well.

PropertiesLagos Warns Against Drilling Boreholes Without Licence, Permit by Kwanza(op): 7:40am On Jun 18, 2020
Lagos Warns Against Drilling Boreholes without Licence, Permit

… Seals Erring Construction Site in Ikoyi

The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC), has cautioned operators in the borehole drilling industry against operating without the requisite licence or permit from the State Government, just as it sealed a construction site on Cameron Road, in Ikoyi for violating the Environmental Protection and Management Law 2017.

The Executive Secretary, LSWRC, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, gave the warning on the heels of the commencement of a monitoring and enforcement exercise by the Commission to some construction sites in Ikoyi, where boreholes are being drilled without a licence, permit and total disregard for safety measures.

She said as a proactive government, the present administration has embarked on full implementation of the licence and permit regime for borehole drillers to ensure safe water consumption by residents, protect groundwater and engender environmental sustainability.

While maintaining that erring practitioners will, henceforth, be sanctioned for violating the Environmental Protection and Management Law, she said the enforcement exercise was part of the control measures by the State Government to prevent unregulated drilling of boreholes.

According to Adepoju, “the Lagos State Harmonised Environmental Protection and Management Law (2017) empowers the LSWRC to regulate the production, distribution, abstraction, consumption, supply and use of water, as well as the quality of service, and it would amount to breaching the law for any borehole driller and those who drill for private use, to do so without a licence or permit from the Commission”.

She added that “the LSWRC has the mandate to ensure that operators in the industry comply with the stipulated standards. If you have to drill, we have the responsibility to ensure that the water available is safe for consumption. In view of the high correlation between hygienic water and health, the government will not allow quacks to take over the industry. As such, all drillers need a licence to operate in line with standard regulatory provision”.

The Executive Secretary emphasised that the geological formation of Lagos is sedimentary and caution is, therefore, necessary in drilling for water across the metropolis, noting that due to the importance of groundwater, the government is poised to protect it from pollution, contamination of water bodies, unregulated drilling, saline filtration and environmental degradation, among others.

PoliticsEdo Assembly Shut For 14 Days As APC Crisis Deepens by Kwanza(op):
The Edo state house of assembly has been shut for a period of 14 days.

Stephen Guobadia, the assembly’s acting director, administrator and supplies, who announced this in a statement, asked members to stay away until the complex has been fumigated.

The development comes amid the crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the June 22 governorship primary election.

The party’s screening committee had disqualified Godwin Obaseki, the governor, from the primary and he subsequently resigned from APC.

Guobadia urged members of the assembly to remain active with their mobile phones to aid communication.

“I am directed to inform all staff of Edo State House of Assembly that the Leadership of the House has instructed that all Management Staff remain at home for 14 days from Tuesday, 16th June, 2020,” the statement read.

“This is as a result of the fumigation exercise to be carried out in the Assembly Complex at three (3) different times.

“All Management Staff are advised to leave their phones open in case of further information.”

The assembly was not shut for fumigation after Frank Okiye, speaker of the assembly, tested positive for COVID-19 in March.

Okiye was the index case of the state which has now recorded 620 COVID-19 cases. The speaker had recovered from the infection 21 days after treatment.

The Edo assembly has been engulfed in political crisis in the last one year, as 14 of its 24 members have not been inaugurated since their election.

There is a division among members loyal to Obaseki and Adams Oshiomhole, his predecessor.

The GCM, headed by Lieutenant-General Lamidi Adeosun found the former GOC guilty on all the five counts charges filed against him. The former GOC was charged for Stealing N100 million and N160, respectively money belonging to the Nigerian army in count one and two and disobedience to standing order under section 66 of the Armed Forces Act(AFA), on count there, four and five respectively. The pronouncement is however subject to confirmation from the Army Council.

The said money which was supposed to be in the custody of the Finance Officer of the division was said to have been diverted by the senior officer who was also accused of engaging in private business other than the army job.

But the Defence counsel while appealing to the court for leniency on his client, said the accused had already returned the money which he was being charged for and that most of the projects he was accused of embarking on had been completed or are at various stages of completion

He also said accused officer was due for retirement this year and that he is very sick and that his wife was down with cancer. He said the officer lost his mother last July and is the bread winner of his family. “For this reason we ask the court to temper justice with mercy.

“By next month, which is July, the accused senior officer would have been in incarceration for almost one year. So we plead that your lordship look at the officer with compassion”. The Defence counsel pleaded with the court.

The GCM, which has Major-General Lamidi Adeosun as president and Major A Mohammed as Judge also has

Major-Generals AA Tarfa , FO Agugo,JS Malu, M Mohammed and Maj Gen CT Olukoju, as members while Major General CC Okonkwo, is the waiting member.

Reports also had it that the soldiers who may have been planning the operation after being sent on several occasion to deliver huge sums of money by their principal, also relocated their families from the barracks at Jaji, in Kaduna state thus making it very difficult for the military authorities to track and arrest them.

However, one of the soldier who refused to participate in the illegal act, was said to have reported the matter to the authorities. The said soldier was also said to have returned the sum of N16million.

The former GOC, who was placed in custody of the SIB, at the Shehu Yaradua barracks Abuja, was later placed on house arrest at his residence in Abuja.

PoliticsUsman Shugaba, Aisha Buhari's ADC Released, Reassigned To Force Headquarters by Kwanza(op): 11:25pm On Jun 15, 2020
Aisha Buhari's ADC Released, Reassigned To Force Headquarters, Others Regain Freedom

Aide De Camp to Mrs Aisha Buhari, Nigeria's First Lady, Usman Shugaba, has been released by the police authorities after being arrested and detained since last week alongside other security personnel attached to Mrs Buhari.

According to sources close to Aso Villa, Shugaba was released earlier on Monday and immediately reassigned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

A former ADC to Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, Shugaba is believed to know so many secrets of top aides in the Presidency including those of members of the 'cabal', a bunch of individuals with close links to the President and unparalleled influence.

For this reason, Shugaba is seen as a threat especially by this group of persons, who now consider Mrs Buhari to be their major stumbling block in continuing to 'manipulate' the President in their favour.

Recall that the latest crisis in Aso Villa leading to the arrest and detention of Shugaba and other security personnel attached to the First Lady started last Monday when Buhari's Personal Assistant and Private Secretary, Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf, refused to embark on a 14-day isolation upon returning from a private trip to Lagos.

After refusing to self-isolate for the said period and forcing his way into Aso Villa, Shugaba and his colleagues rough-handled Yusuf, who later escaped to the residence of Mamman Daura, Buhari's nephew and member of the 'cabal', on Thursday evening.

Subsequently, Yusuf with the active connivance of Buhari's Chief Security Officer, Idris Kassim, ordered the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, to arrest Shugaba, Escort Commander and other policemen attached to the first family.

It was claimed that gunshots were fired in the process of trying to get Yusuf out of the Villa, thereby breaching security code around the President, who called for a probe into the incident.

As a result of that incident, a full blown war has since emerged between Mrs Buhari, Yusuf and other members of the 'cabal' desperate to whittle down her influence in Aso Villa.

SaharaReporters gathered from reliable sources that the crisis is far from over as Mrs Buhari is said to be hatching a plot to take a heavy pound of flesh in retaliation for the embarrassment received.

CrimeHerdsmen Kill 65-Year-Old Man In Imo (Disturbing Photos) by Kwanza(op): 9:10am On Jun 15, 2020
Barely 48 hours after president Muhammed Buhari reiterated his administration’s victory over incessant killing in the country and the need to regularize the activities of the herdemen in the country, a 65 -year- old -man, Mazi Ozoemena Iriaka, has been killed by herdsmen yesterday, in Umuekpu-Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area (LGA),Imo State.

This, according to the villagers who converged at the scene of the incident said the killing has continued for some time as the bandits threaten to attack the community and their farmland again considering that their (community) livelihood is dependent on farming.

The community maintained that this was aside constant threat to life encountered by indigenes who farm in their land on a daily basis since 2015.

Findings revealed that Police officers of at Mgbala Police Division, Oguta, and some personnel of the Nigerian Army arrived the scene after the killers had fled and carried the body of the butchered farmer.

Agwa, a community known for farming is located within the oil rich region of the state which contributes to the food security of the state, has been witnessing food shortages recently due to massive cattle ranching.

Several communities are currently battling with the constant threat of herdsmen to their means of livelihood, sources said are; Akabo- is one of the communities where it was also alleged that a couple was killed last week; others places includes: Izombe, Okwukwu, Ejemekwuru, Amafor, Obibi, Amakohia and Egbeme all in Imo state.

Speaking to newsmen in the wake of the attack which occurred in the early hours of yesterday, a witness (name withheld) said, the incident has thrown the whole community into fear and chaos considering the spate of murder going on in the country by different men of the underworld.

Narrating the unfortunate incident, Mr Austin Onyeoma (a resident) said after destruction of their crops by herder’s cattle, the community has been dragged into economic quagmire, subjecting them to excruciating pains during this pandemic.

He said, having heard the herdermen were on their farm land in the early hour of the yesterday, they matched to the location to know the rationale for their invasion only for the bandits to attack them with AK-47 .

According to him: “When we got to our farm land where their Cattle were devouring our crops which we invested so much, we engaged them on conversation only for them to start shooting at us with their AK-47.

“In the process, they shot Mazi Iriaka and slit his back neck after we ran for dear life. I have never seen this in my entire life where people can no longer farm on their land to survive because of threats from herdsmen considering the lockdown.”

HealthEdo COVID-19 Update By Governor Obaseki by Kwanza(op): 7:30pm On Jun 13, 2020
1.
My dear people of #EdoState, greetings to you at this critical time of our lives. These last three months have been difficult for us as a result of the disruptions to our lives caused by the #COVID19 pandemic.

2.
As you will recall, when I first addressed you on the 23rd of March 2020, I emphasized that our response to the #COVID19 pandemic will be largely determined by research data and information.

3.
The epidemiological model for Edo which was developed with the assistance of the @UBTH hinted that the pandemic will peak in Edo in the last week of June.

4.
As at today, we have screened over 404,500 and tested 4342 Edo residents for #COVID19. From this exercise, we have recorded 518 confirmed cases, 130 recoveries and sadly 27 deaths. We pray that God grants their soul repose and their families fortitude to bear the loss.

5.
The data clearly shows that there is now a large-scale community spread with the elderly persons being the most affected.

6.
Even though persons aged 60 years and above make up 5% of our population, over 50% of deaths recorded affects this category of people. This shows that #COVID19 disease has a more fatal impact on them resulting in death.

7.
As a government, we are very concerned about this exposure of our elderly population to this disease and so we have resolved that these vulnerable persons must be protected. Their lives matter.

8.
We must now intensify protective measures such as wearing of face masks, hand washing and practicing physical distancing. We cannot afford to act irresponsibly, so we must take this preventive action very seriously.

9.
Although we have comfortable facilities that can care for up to 500 people, some persons are refusing to isolate and receive treatment in these facilities. When you isolate at home, there is a higher likelihood that other people will be infected.

10.
In view of the up-coming elections and to reduce infection transmission rates during political gatherings, I have issued a gazette that provides guidance on how political parties can conduct their activities.

11.
There remains a restriction of gatherings for more than 20 persons. However, where higher numbers of persons are required to gather, permit with specified location, guidelines and supervision may be granted by the @EdoStateGovt.

12.
Even though we had only implemented a partial lockdown in #EdoState, however, in line with the Presidential Task Force recommendations for States, the curfew starting from 10pm to 4am subsists.

13.
Schools remain closed. However, guidelines for phased reopening are being developed together with the Federal Ministry of Education, especially for students in JSS 3 and SS 3 who are preparing for their exit examinations.

14.
I encourage all Edo parents and guardians of pupils in primary schools, to continue to utilize our e-learning platforms for their educational needs, while they are still at home.

15.
We will continue phased relocations and reopening of our markets. We strongly appeal to traders and market union leadership to strictly comply and enforce government directives on social distancing for their own health and wellbeing.

16.
Following consultations with CAN and religious bodies, we will commence a reopening of places of worship. We are expanding screening and testing to religious groups/organizations and business establishments.

17.
We call on all religious organisations, corporate bodies and health facilities to assist us drive modalities for our new norm and cooperate with the designated health and security agencies in this regard.

18.
We have swiftly initiated the Independent Farmers Initiative to engage farmers across the 18 Local Government and provide the necessary support to boost food production in the state. This is to ensure food security during and after the #COVID19 pandemic.

19.
Under these initiatives, we are supporting small and medium scale farmers by providing them with seeds, fertilizers and other farming inputs to produce foods which Government will purchase from them.

20.
Our distribution of palliatives will continue, as we are in the 3rd phase of the exercise, reaching over 200,000 households. We encourage the more fortunate ones among us to continue to share with your neighbours who may be less fortunate.

21.
We want to specially thank our security agencies; the @PoliceNG, PUWOV, Community Vigilantes and others who have kept our communities relatively safe.

22.
Crime rates have improved but we must focus our attention to the growing trend of sexual abuse especially against our girls and women. This is a threat that we must resist and work with the security agencies to report.

23.
We will ensure that all rape cases are thoroughly investigated, and the perpetrators of this hideous crimes are prosecuted.

24.
We are proud of our gallant health workers and appreciate their sacrifices and constant care for our people. We encourage you to keep up the good work as we continue to prioritise your safety and welfare.

25.
Our resilience as a people is being tested by this pandemic, we are hopeful that with your support and the continuous dedication of our health workers, we shall overcome.

REAL MADRID FOOTBALL ACADEMY TO START ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES IN SEPTEMBER, 2020

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says the Real Madrid Football Academy in the state will be completed in August this year.

This will enable the Academy to start full academic activities in September.

The new deadline is predicated on the fact that the contractors claimed to have lost 28 days because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Wike extended the completion date when he visited the project site of the Academy at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia, Port Harcourt, to inspect the extent of work done.

Speaking to journalists, Governor Wike said the academy would become operational in September when the new academic session begins.

He emphasised that the contractors would have no reason to delay completion of the project beyond August 2020 because the State Government would fulfil her financial obligation.

The governor noted that the pitches and the administrative offices are ready but the academy cannot commence activities without the completion of the hostels and the classrooms that would be used by the students

According to him, the aspect of academics activities is as important as the football training in order to give Rivers youths admitted into the institution a more holistic career path.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work by the contractor and urged him to redouble his effort to meet the deadline.
