HealthCOVID-19: 100 People Die In Azare, Bauchi Within 7 Days by Kwanza(op): 12:47pm On May 09, 2020
Panic In Bauchi Community As Over 100 People Die Of COVID-19 Within Seven Days

Over 100 people are said to have died in Azare, Bauchi State, over the last one week owing to Coronavirus complications.

Azare is the second largest town in the state after Bauchi, the state capital.

Ibrahim Mohammed Baba, former lawmaker representing Katagum Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, made this known in a letter of appeal for urgent action to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Baba said the deaths caused by COVID-19 had thrown the town into great mourning, panic and confusion.

The former lawmaker said the centrality and proximity of Azare to Bauchi, Kano and some major cities in Jigawa State exposed people of the town to the virus.

He said, “Your Excellency, I write to draw your kind attention to the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in Azare town and environs in Bauchi State, which has already resulted in over 100 fatalities in the last one week and this has thrown the entire area into great mourning, panic and confusion.

“The centrality and proximity of Azare to Bauchi, Kano and some major cities of Jigawa State make the town's large population susceptible to the virus due to the already existing large cases of the disease in those areas.

“Consequently therefore, I wish to appeal to your Excellency to direct the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control and the Presidential Task force on COVID-19 to urgently reach out to Azare town with all the necessary facilities and palliatives to assist the communities there.

"And to help in this expected effort, may I draw your attention to the fact that at the Opthamology unit and laboratory have already been built and equipped by the Central Bank of Nigeria at the Azare Federal Medical Centre since 2013 but have not been commissioned and put to use up till now. This facility can be repurposed to a COVID-19 test and treatment centre provided the right equipments are added, including ventilators.

“As a matter of life and death, I have the utmost trust in your sense of patriotism and commitment to the well-being of Nigerians that you will assist the beleaguered people of Azare town and environs to overcome this harrowing situation."

SaharaReporters recall that Justice Dahiru Saleh, a former federal judge, known for annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election died on Thursday in Azare.

He was said to have died of Coronavirus complications.

The NCDC on Friday announced that the number of COVID-19 cases increased to 117 in Bauchi State following the confirmation of 15 new cases.

HealthWoman Poisons Her Husband To Death, Chops Off His Manhood by Kwanza(op): 8:48am On May 09, 2020
An eight-year-old marriage has ended on a tragic note in Zumbagwe, a remote community in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. Thirty-three-year-old Janet Ekpe poisoned her husband for allegedly dating her best friend and watched him die slowly and painfully.

Besides allegedly dating her best friend, Janet also accused her husband, Sunday Ekpe, of starving her of sex while satisfying her friend with same. Janet recalled that she had got used to having marathon sex with Ekpe since they got married only for him to slow down after her second child and later withdrew completely.

‘Why I killed him, chopped off his manhood’

In her confessional statement, Janet said she did not know that her late husband was dating her best friend until about three years ago.

She said: “We were married for eight years with two children. It was three years ago I discovered that my husband had fallen in love with my best friend, a widow, and had been dating her.

“Since then, he stopped sleeping with me; he began to starve me sexually while satisfying my best friend.

“When we got married eight years ago, sex seemed to be the only thing on my husband’s mind. He was always in the mood.

“We would make love three or four times before morning, and when he woke up, he would be ready to continue.

“There were days he skipped work and we would spend the whole day making love.

“We had sex in the bathroom, in the kitchen and anywhere it caught our fancy in the house.

“I became used to constant sex through him and also became the envy of my close friends, including my best friend who he later fell in love with.

“Whenever we shared stories of our exploits in bed, my friends felt I had the best man and jokingly begged me to allow them to have my husband just for a day because their husbands could not satisfy them in bed.

“But shortly after we had our two kids, I began to notice his disinterest in sex with me and his performance level began to drop.

“While we were having sex on a regular basis before, it came down to two times in a week and later became so bad that we could stay for three or four months without making love.

“Initially, I was not bothered because I felt that he would come around it after the babies were weaned. But I was wrong. He began to starve me of sex for months on end.

“It got to the point that I would be begging him to sleep with me but he would rebuff my requests.

“At times, he would tell me I should relive the moments we had sex every day and wallow in that fantasy.

“When I pestered him further, he told me he was no more interested in sex as he had had enough to last him a lifetime.

“He even told me that sex is not food and that if I felt so sex starved, I should get a man to satisfy me.

“I reported the matter to our church and the pastor summoned him, but he could not convince our pastor.

“I reported the matter to his parents in the village and some of his relations around, but he ignored their invitation.

The final straw

“Within this period, my husband started keeping late night, which was very unusual of him.

“Unknown to me, my best friend, Hellen, who is a widow, started keeping distance with me, while some of my friends started hinting that she and my husband were dating.

“I watched the way they acted and how happy he always seemed in her presence.

“I monitored them closely and caught them five times in a drinking joint in new Nyanyan.

“When I confronted him about it, he said I was being silly; so I decided to believe the whole story.

“The worst was the day I saw a text message from Hellen in my husband’s phone, thanking him for giving him the best sexual satisfaction ever in her life the previous day.

“I was devastated. I felt sick and angry.

“I was hurt that my own husband could do this to me.

“I went back to our pastor but my husband turned down the pastor’s invitation and even stopped attending church.

“At this point, he stopped coming back home most times and resorted to sleeping in hotels with Hellen.

“I felt like a single mum and it upset me. I confronted Hellen and told her she was hurting me and that their relationship was getting stronger while they were not taking my feelings into consideration.

“I could not stand the thought of them being so close.

“I used to love and trust my husband but he turned me into something I never knew I could become: a murderer. I killed him. I poisoned him and watched him die in our bedroom, painfully.

“I mixed a deadly, colourless, tasteless and odourless substance in his meal and drinking water which destroyed his intestines immediately.

“He cried and struggled uncontrollably after taking the meal. He gave up after an hour and I used a sharp blade and knife to chop off his penis, place it on his chest as evidence of what killed him.

“If your penis is the one that is giving you the audacity to have feelings for my best friend and refusing to listen to the advice of your parents and even your pastor, it is better to cut it off.

“Mr Sunday (Ekpe), a cheating, filthy, lying bastard, ought to die for me to live. I deserve to live because I am human and have blood flowing in my veins.

“These foolish men, you give them everything, yet they choose to fool around and play with your intelligence.

“I had monitored him closely and tolerated him for long and his end has come.”

Ekpe lived dangerously, says uncle

Mr Adakole Onoja, an uncle of Ekpe, told our correspondent that the deceased man was not Godly in his affairs with Hellen.

He said: “When his wife reported the matter to me, I invited him to my house and told him the implications of his actions.

“You cannot completely starve your young wife of sex and resort to dating her best friend.

“Many people, including his parents in the village, his pastor and his close friends, interfered in the issue but he turned a deaf ear to them.

“Maybe that was how he was destined to end his life.

“His wife’s action may not be right, but she is a human being too.”

All the efforts made by our correspondent to reach Hellen on the phone yielded no result as her phone was repeatedly said to have been switched off.

Visits made to her hairdressing salon also yielded no fruit as the salon was locked up.

COVID-19: GOVERNOR WIKE CHARGES TASK FORCE TO IDENTIFY HOTELS OPERATING UNDER LOCKDOWN FOR DEMOLITION

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has charged the Rivers State COVID-19 Local Governments Task Force to identify hotels still operating during the lockdown for the State Government to demolish them.

Inaugurating the Rivers State COVID-19 Local Governments Task Force at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Thursday also charged them to identify erring beer parlours.

He said: "From tomorrow, move in. Any hotel that is operating , identify it and we will bring down the hotels.

"I have the political will. Those people who disobey, will face the consequences."

Governor Wike said that the Task-force must be decisive to ensure that coronavirus is not accommodated in Rivers State.

The Governor said that the Task-force must take it that they are being drafted to fight an invisible enemy and their duty is to defend the state.

He said: "Nobody should come from outside to compound our problems. Then you want to import this invisible killer. We will not allow that. "

He appealed to Rivers people to make sacrifices at this time in the fight against coronavirus. He noted that this is a period of crisis and all hands must be on deck to check coronavirus.

"If we allow what is happening to continue, we don't have the capacity to face it. And there will be no support from any Quarter," he said.

Governor Wike urged all Rivers people to see themselves as first class citizens of the country, saying under no circumstances should they allow themselves to be relegated.

He charged the operatives of the Task Force to see their appointment as the opportunity to defend Rivers State and use their ability for the benefit of the people.

The Governor informed members of the Rivers State COVID-19 Local Governments Task Force that they will be on the payroll of the State Government.

He said that the Task Force will enforce key aspects of the State Government's directive on COVID-19 in all the Local Government Areas.

PART C
In view of the foregoing, Government has resolved to impose additional measures by the Executive Order, I have just signed, which are targeted at reinforcing our efforts toward stopping the spread of the virus in the State, as follows:

(b) impound and auction any vehicle with persons or passengers without wearing facemasks;

(c) arrest and prosecute any driver loading or off-loading passengers at any private motor-park, taxi rank or loading bay;

(d) impound and auction any vehicle loading or off-loading passengers at any private park, taxi rank or loading bay; and

(e) confiscate and auction any hotel and guest houses operating in defiance of the ban."

(f) Government will give N100,000.00 to any whistle blower who gives out relevant information leading to the arrest and prosecution of any person, hotelier or motorist that violates these directives.

All hoteliers must provide the State Task Force on COVID-19 with the manifest of those already lodged in their hotels before the coming into effect of this directive.

While the State Government is battling the importation of this virus, the greatest threat to people's lives is posed not from outsiders but by those residents who are refusing to comply with the established directives and change their behaviour to conform to the new experience.

PART B

Given the threat posed to the State by oil and gas company workers, it has reviewed all entry waivers and permits earlier granted to Oil and Gas Companies .

The Rivers State Government declared:

"(i) from now on, requests for waivers and entry permits from oil and gas companies will be considered on a case by case basis;

(ii) all inward-bound vehicles and flights into Rivers State from oil and gas companies with workers for crew change or other essential operations must first submit details of their manifests to the State’s taskforce on COVID-19 for proper vetting of their virus status before they can be allowed to enter the State;

"(iii) all operators of chartered flights into Rivers State for oil and gas operations, especially Bristow and Caverton Helicopters, should please comply with this directive and refrain from jeopardizing the lives of our people for the sake of making profits.

This Government is focused and therefore will not allow itself to be distracted on its battle against COVID-19.

However, we will neither tolerate nor hesitate to deal anyone who dares to fabricate lies to rubbish the hard work and sacrifice we are making to save the lives in our State just to advance parochial partisan interests.

I wish to reiterate that the hard choices we have to make as a Government and as a people over the COVID-19 pandemic are all premised on upholding the sanctity of human life.

As a Government, we cannot abdicate this compelling responsibility and abandon our people to chances in the midst of this much dreaded and ravaging pandemic.

The latest of these positive cases was the 14th case that was flown in to Port Harcourt by Bristow Helicopters from an offshore oilfield facility in Akwa Ibom State on the 29th of April 2020.

These positive cases have shown and confirmed our fears that unvetted entry of Oil and Gas workers from Lagos, Abuja and elsewhere remains a potential source for the importation and spread of COVID-19 in our State.

We have also observed with disappointment the persistent disobedience to the State Government’s lawful orders and or directives on COVID-19 by a number of communities and residents, especially in Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas despite repeated warning.

On the whole, we can all see that COVID-19 cases confirmed across the country are growing in numbers, meaning that the situation in our State, although still relatively low, can change for the worse, if we relax our measures or become complacent.

Consequently, we have decided on the extreme measure of placing the entire Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas under a 24 hours total lockdown from Thursday 7th May 2020 until further notice.

On no account should there be any vehicular movements or gathering of more than two persons in these Local Government Areas, except those on essential services with appropriate authorization;

All shops, trading or business activities, including currency exchange, in these Local Government Areas must also remain closed until further notice.

All Landlords are advised to ensure that no shop or trading activity is opened or carried out in or around their premises or risk the confiscation of their property by the Government.

“We have been successful in closing down our state, in reducing the traffic into our state, every case in the state has been imported.

PoliticsCOVID-19: Ganduje Rejects Kwankwaso’s Amana Hospital As Isolation Center by Kwanza(op): 10:46am On May 01, 2020
COVID-19: Controversy as Ganduje rejects Kwankwaso’s Amana Hospital as isolation centre

Kwankwasiyya Foundation has disclosed that Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduhe, has rejected the former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s donation of a newly-built 60-bed capacity hospital as isolation center for Coronavirus patients in the state.

Recall that on Monday, April 20, the former governor had announced the donation in terse statement signed by Ibrahim Adam, spokesman to Abba Kabiru Yusuf, the Kano State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in the 2019 elections.

According to the statement, the hospital, named Amana Hospital and located at Miller Road, Bompai in the Kano City, had been equipped by Mr Kwankwaso, a former Senate who represented Kano Central during the 8th Assembly.

On Friday, a few weeks thereafter, Kwankwasiyya Movement took to twitter to disclose that Mr Ganduje had yet to acknowledge the gesture nor put the same to a use.

Writing on Twitter, the movement alleged that Mr Ganduje was playing politics with the lives of Kano people by refusing to take the donation.

“Millions of lives are at stake but Ganduje is playing politics with the donation of the hospital by Kwankwasiyya Foundation.

“Gov. Ganduje refused to take a donation of a hospital as an isolation center from Kwankwaso in order to save lives in Kano because of a mere political grudge,” the foundation wrote.

Reacting to the development, Twitter users expressed mixed reactions with one user stating that if what the movement claimed is true, then, Governor Ganduje’s decision is bad.

He said: “If that’s true, then it’s too bad. I thought they have settled their differences considering the esteemed regards people have for them.”

Another user rose in defense of Governor Ganduje, saying that the Kwankwasiyya Movement was a hypocrite for playing politics with everything.

According to him, Kano does not lack isolation centre, adding that the state needs testing laboratories at the moment.

He said: “[Kwankwasiyya Movement are] original hypocrites, playing politics in everything thing.

“You know Kano does lack isolation Center for now, it is a lab that Kano needs, we still have unoccupied isolation center by Dangote at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

EducationUNIZIK Discovers Drug For Coronavirus by Kwanza(op): 7:31pm On Apr 28, 2020
The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has announced a break through in the cure of novel Coronavirus by its Department of Pharmacy.

Prof Ikemefuna C. Uzochukwu, Principal Investigator, COVID-19 Drug Design, Discovery and Development Project, School of Pharmacy of the University said his group identified nine existing drugs, 14 phytochemicals from natural products and 3 N-acetyl glucosamine analogs with good binding affinities to two important COVID-19 proteins (glycoprotein S and protease) using computer-aided drug design tools.

These, Uzochukwu said may be potential inhibitors and possible drug or lead candidates for the treatment and prophylaxis of Covid-19.

On whether there is any prospect for the findings, he said his group found existing (approved) drugs that could be used for pre-and post-exposure chemoprophylaxis and treatment of Covid-19.

“The identified phytochemicals performed better than the existing drugs and could be developed as well for pre-and post-exposure chemoprophylaxis and treatment of Covid-19.”

Uzochukwu, however, said that the next step is for the group to do in vitro validation studies as well as Phase 2 clinical trials for identified existing drugs.

He called for funding and technical support both from partners and collaborators to progress the drug development because so far, according to him, the group have been self-funded up-to-date.

PoliticsCOVID-19: Okonjo-Iweala Appointed By WHO As Special Envoy For ACT Accelerator by Kwanza(op): 8:07am On Apr 25, 2020
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, named Special Envoy for WHO’s Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.

Nigeria’s former finance minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was named by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as its Special Envoy for the newly inaugurated Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that she is to serve alongside British business executive, Sir Andrew Witty in the same capacity, to mobilise international commitment to the initiative.

Director-General of the organisation, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, made the announcement during the launch of the ACT Accelerator — via webinar from Geneva.

“I would especially like to thank Sir Andrew Witty and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for agreeing to act as Special Envoys for the ACT Accelerator,” Ghebreyesus said in his remarks.

The initiative is an international collaboration aimed at accelerating the development, production, and equitable distribution of COVID-18 drugs, tests kits, and vaccines around the world.

This is the fourth international assignment given to Okonjo-Iweala in less than two months.

On March 7, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa appointed her a member of the country’s Economic Advisory Council, which comprises indigenous and international economic experts.

The council advises the president and government on the development and implementation of economic policies toward advancing inclusive growth.

A month later on April 10, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, named Okonjo-Iweala a member of the fund’s External Advisory Group.

The group comprises prominent individuals from around the world, who will serve as Georgieva’s special advisers.

Okonjo-Iweala is one of the four Special Envoys the African Union (AU) appointed on April 12 to mobilise international support for its efforts toward addressing the coronavirus pandemic.

The AU special envoys are charged with soliciting the support of the G20, the European Union and other international financial institutions for the organisation’s response.

Okonjo-Iweala is an internationally respected economist and development expert, who has served as Managing Director of the World Bank, among other assignments.

HealthLagos Discharges 10 Coronavirus Patients by Kwanza(op): 7:03pm On Apr 24, 2020
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu announced it.

Even with the number of cases rising, we are happy to celebrate our success stories because they show that a positive #COVID19 case isn't necessarily a case of doom and gloom.

Today,10 patients; 3 females & 7 males including 3 foreigners have been discharged from our facilities

We are encouraged by these discharged cases and the support we have received from the citizens of the state in the battle against #COVID19 but I urge us all not to relent because it is imperative that we win.

Remember to practice great personal hygiene and join our #MaskUpLagos campaign by using a facemask whenever you are in public.

Social distancing is still very key in stopping the spread and we must #StayHomeStaySafe to #SaveLives

Together, we will beat #COVID19.
