PoliticsLati Raheem Is Dead! Tinubu's ‘Most Trusted’ Aide Dies After A Brief Illness by Kwanza(op): 4:21pm On Apr 24, 2020
Lati Raheem, chief security officer to Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is dead.

He was the most trusted aide of Tinubu, insiders told TheCable.

“He was sick briefly and hospitalised. He had high blood pressure and diabetes. He died in early hours of Friday,” the source said.

Raheem had been on Tinubu’s team for over 20 years and was the only aide still left from his time as governor of Lagos state from 1999 to 2007.

He will be buried according to Muslim rites on Friday, the first day of Ramadan, which is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.

President Muhammadu Buhari recently lost his most trusted aide, Abba Kyari, following complications from COVID-19.

He also lost his bodyguard, Lawal Mato, to complications from diabetes four days later.

PoliticsLockdown: Ikpeazu Weeps, Tells Abians ‘I'm Touched By Your Pain' by Kwanza(op): 4:30pm On Apr 23, 2020
As the people of Nigeria and indeed Abia, God’s Own State continue to face difficulties as a result of the restriction of movements imposed on the state to checkmate the spread of coronavirus, the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has expressed sympathy for the people, saying he is touched by their plights.

The Governor in a release he personally signed on Thursday said these are tough times, adding that it pains him to see people idle at home even when they depend on their daily income. “But we shall overcome” he said.

“It pains me to see our people sit at home and do no work, especially for the millions of our people whose livelihoods depend on daily work and activities.

“Government is losing money too because revenue can only be generated when economic activities are on.

“But being alive is far greater than any other consideration” he added.

The Governor while also stating that the state has had its fair share of the impact of the deadly COVID-19 appealed to citizens to bear with the government as it makes efforts to curb COVID-19, maintaining that ‘Ndu kariri ihe eji azu ya’.

“Besides, Abia is not an island. We are a part of the global community battling with this pandemic.

“I renew my appeal to all our citizens to take this situation very seriously. Please stay at home and observe all the protocols as enunciated by the relevant authorities.

“As a government, we shall continue to do our very best to provide support for our people.

“Together, we shall see each other on the other side of this challenge.

“God bless you all and may God bless Abia State” he concluded.

Kia Motors said Thursday it will shut two of its eight plants in South Korea due to the coronavirus impact.

Operations will be suspended at the Sohari plant in Gwangmyeong, from April 27 to May 10 and again from May 22-25.

HealthNigeria Police Lose Senior Officer to COVID-19 in Edo (Photo) by Kwanza(op):
The Nigeria Police Force has lost one of its senior officers to the coronavirus disease, COVID-19. Francis Adie Bissong, a deputy commissioner of police, was until his death the Deputy Commissioner, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, (SCID) in the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, Benin-City. Bissong, who hailed from Cross River State and joined the Force March 3, 1990, was said to have taken ill April 14 and was being treated privately before the attention of the state government was called to his case.

The state government also on Wednesday announced that it recorded two new cases of COVID-19 bringing the total of confirmed cases in the state to 17 and two deaths. Before the death of Bissong, the state had recorded only one death. As of today, the state now has eight active cases, seven discharged persons, and 142 suspected cases spread across 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs)of the state

Speaking on the development, the state commissioner for health, Patrick Okundia, explained that about two days before Bissong’s death, the state surveillance team was called to have a look at him. Okundia said in the process, his sample was taken and it was sent to the laboratory while he continued with his drugs. “He was placed on self-isolation; however, the result came out and it was positive”. The health commissioner said before they could get to his house to move him, it was discovered that he had died that same day. “It is really unfortunate that the result came after the man had died”, Okundia lamented.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer, Emeka Ihenacho, could not be reached for his reaction to the sad incident. However, an unimpeachable source in the zone comprising Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States, confirmed the incident. The source disclosed that the deceased officer was being treated privately when he was confirmed to have been infected with the disease which unfortunately cut short his life.

According to the source, “as we speak, the entire police force in the zone has been thrown into mourning over the death of DCP Bissong”. He hinted that the the Police Service Commission had ratified his elevation to the rank of Commissioner of Police which was delayed because of COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Bissong, an alumnus of St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos, was said to have served in various capacities, including as an instructor at Police Academy, Wudil, Kano; Police Academy, Lagos, among others.

A native of Bendeghe Ekiem in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State, Bissong, who left behind one wife and three children, was at the Institute for Security Studies, Bwari Abuja, between January and November 2018. He was elevated to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police December 2, 2018.

CrimeMan, 29, Arrested For Allegedly Defiling Down Syndrome Minor by Kwanza(op): 5:36pm On Apr 17, 2020
The Police in Oyo State have arrested one Timothy Abijo, 29, for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old minor with Down Syndrome.

The incident was said to have occurred on April 16 at No. 32, Adetola Str., Felele in Ibadan.

The suspect, who was on visitation to his cousin, residing in the same house as the victim was alleged to have lured the girl with N 500.

The mother of the victim, said that the suspect lured the girl into his host’s room and gagged her before raping her.

Abijo was alleged to have given the minor N500 after warning her not to tell anyone.

The victim’s mother said the raped girl was a virgin, with Down Syndrome, which implies that she has special needs, and also has issues with speech.

The incident was alleged to have occurred between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., while her mother, left her at home to get food for the family.

“My daughter did not know what had happened to her, upon returning from market I found her hiding under the staircase crying.

“It took physical examination for me to realise that my daughter had been brutally defiled,

“Upon enquiry, she pointed at the room where she was violated where Timothy was found and he fled immediately,” the mother said.

The matter was reported at the Felele Police Station.

The police with cooperation of the suspect’s cousin apprehended Abijo at Ibadan Tollgate where he was trying to flee to Lagos.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Iyaganku for investigation.

The Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP. Olugbenga Fadeyi, said he was yet to be brief on the matter.

“I’m yet to be briefed but I will investigate the matter,” Fadeyi said.

PoliticsUpdated: How 22 Exxon Mobil offshore staff were arrested by Rivers Govt by Kwanza(op):
Details have emerged how 22 offshore staff of Exxon Mobil were Thursday night arrested by Rivers State Government.

21 of the workers are members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, while the remaining staff is the company’s Chief Security Officer, CSO.

Vanguard gathered that the affected personnel “left Eket Mopol camp at about 2.45pm with full convoy of security escort for 14 days Quarantine at Intels Camp. Two buses, everybody inside maintaining social distances. On getting to Bori (Akwa Ibom/Rivers boundary), we were stopped by police blockade comprising Rivers State Police commissioner and a top army commander.

“Our security personnel started making calls to the Police commissioner, CP, who had left immediately with his convoy after stopping us. The Commissioner we were told asked us to come in on condition that we would be taken to Elekaya stadium at Port Harcourt, PH, for Coronavirus, COVID-19 test by National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

“The State’s Police vehicle led our convoy and arrived at Elekaya stadium at about 5pm. At the stadium, where an Isolation Center is being constructed by the state Government , there was no NCDC official or anybody to conduct any test on us, and we were left hanging.

“The Mobil Chief Security Officer, CSO, kept talking to the Government officials including the CP, Attorney General and the Commissioner for Health who came to the stadium in person, but no directive for us to be released. Police troops then started arriving the stadium, and their leader came and questioned us on what brought us to Rivers State. Our CSO explained everything on our behalf, stating that we are on essential business and that we had permission to move. The police left us after his valid explanation.

“The police later returned with printed forms for each of us to write statement (as if we are under arrest). We refused to oblige on individual basis, and our CSO also refused to write. At that point they resorted to harassment, asking us to enter the vehicles and seized the CSO phone. But our CSO kept explaining and talking to their leaders, and after sometimes his phone was returned to him. They later left but went to write statement on a form for the CSO to sign which he equally refused.”

Vanguard gathered that at the time of this report, the workers are still at Elekaya Stadium, Port Harcourt, where they have been detained without food or water.

Meanwhile, PENGASSAN in a statement by its Exxon Mobil branch, has called on all stakeholders to prevail on the Rivers State Government to immediately release the detained workers and end the unpleasant drama.

The statement by its Chairman and Secretary, Razaq Obe, and Kingsley Udoidua, respectively, reads in part, “ExxonMobil Nigeria, like other responsible organizations, has adopted 14 days isolation of all personnel as a prerequisite for offshore travels in order to mitigate COVID-19 risk. It has facilities in Akwa Ibom State and one in Port Harcourt (Intels) to achieve (1) above.

“Recall the federal government of Nigeria exempted oil and gas workers on essential service from COVID-19 restrictions in Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Lagos State and Ogun State. The same was mirrored in various communications from Rivers State government which have permitted unfettered movements of other IOCs’ essential service personnel and critical materials.

“At about 3:30pm on Thursday April 16, 2020, Rivers State commissioner of police with his team and a top Army commander intercepted the convoy (protected by the police) conveying 21 ExxonMobil personnel who are PENGASSAN members on their way to Intels, Port Harcourt, at Bori (Akwa Ibom/Rivers boundary).

“The commissioner rebuffed all explanations and forced them to move to Elekaya Stadium, Port Harcourt, where they have been detained, verbally assaulted and starved. The original pretext for sending them to the stadium was to test for COVID-19 but there was no such possibility at the location; it is a construction site. They rather served them papers to write statements. It is appalling that Rivers State authorities have turned the global effort to tame COVID-19 to a tool of muscle-flexing and petty oppression of oilfield workers.

“We condemn the continued detention of the 21 members of our Union who stake everything to produce the oil the country depends on for survival. We call on all stakeholders to prevail on the government of Rivers State to end this most unpleasant drama. Our members have broken no law.”

CrimeBREAKING: Suspected Killers Of Funke Olakunrin Arrested – Police by Kwanza(op): 4:21pm On Apr 16, 2020
The Nigeria Police Force says it has apprehended the killers of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Chief Ruben Fasoranti.

This is according to a statement by Force Spokesman, DCP Frank Mba.

Below is a full statement from the Force.

KILLERS OF MRS FUNKE OLAKUNRIN, DAUGHTER OF CHIEF REUBEN FASORANTI, NABBED.
– IGP assures diligent prosecution of culprits
– declares gang leader, Tambaya, wanted

Police Operatives have arrested the killers of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of the leader of the PAN-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti.

The suspects are:
i. Lawal Mazaje ‘m’ 40yrs from Felele area of Kogi State
ii. Adamu Adamu ‘m’ 50yrs from Jada area of Adamawa State.
iii. Mohammed Shehu Usman ‘m’ 26 years from Illela area of Sokoto State
iv. Auwal Abubakar ‘m’ 25yrs from Shinkafi area of Zamfara State

Recall that on 13th July, 2019, following the attack and murder of Mrs Funke Olakunrin by unknown persons between Kajola and Ore along Ondo-Ore road in Ondo State on 12th July, 2019, the Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni deployed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), CP Fimihan Adeoye, to coordinate the team of Police Special Forces and seasoned investigators from the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Federal SARS, Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) from the Force Headquarters, Abuja to carry out massive manhunt for the killers with the aim of arresting and bringing them to justice.

Meanwhile, after months of relentless efforts to apprehend the killers, the Police Team, on 4th March, 2020 during a follow-up action on a case of a high-profile armed robbery and kidnap for ransom that occurred in Ogun State, arrested one Auwal Abubakar ‘m’ 25yrs, an accessory after the fact of the crime, along Sagamu-Ore expressway in Ondo State. The arrest of Auwal Abubakar led to the arrest of two (2) other members of the gang, Mohammed Shehu Usman and Lawal Mazaje in Benin, Edo State from whom cache of ammunition was recovered and one other Adamu Adamu in Akure, Ondo State.

Having established sufficient physical and forensic evidence linking the suspects to the killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, the investigators, determined to clear all doubts relating to their findings, on 8th April, 2020, conducted an Identification Parade at the Federal SARS Headquarters, Lagos which led to the positive and physical identification of three (3) suspects, Adamu Adamu, Lawal Mazaje and Mohammed Shehu Usman by a survivor of the earlier crime. The survivor gave a clear description of the roles each of the identified suspects played in the killing. At this point, the suspects capitulated and voluntarily offered a no-holds-barred confession on how Mrs Funke Olakunrin was killed.

Investigations so far reveal that the operation that led to the killing was carried out by eight (cool fully armed kidnap/robbery suspects led by one Tambaya (other name unknown) who is currently at large. While four (4) of the suspects (mentioned above) are in custody, effort is being intensified to arrest the four (4) others still on the run. The 8-man gang has their operational base and membership spread in the south-western part of the country and Edo State. Investigations have also revealed that they are responsible for series of high-profile armed robbery and kidnap operations in the region. They also attack, vandalize and steal components of critical national infrastructures such as electrical and telecommunications installations.

Consequently, the Inspector General of Police hereby declares the principal suspect, Tambaya (other names unknown) wanted for his involvement in the death of Mrs Funke Olakunrin. Tambaya, a Nigerian, speaks Hausa, Fulfulde and Pidgin English languages. He is fair in complexion and in his late 20s – between the age of 27 and 30. His last known address is Isanlu, Kogi State. He has visible scar from stitches on his forehead down to his nose and mouth.

Meanwhile, the IGP appreciates Nigerians for the patience and support to the Police throughout the period of the investigations into the unfortunate incident. He assures that the suspects will be diligently prosecuted on completion of investigations and that the Force will not relent until every member of the gang, still at large, is arrested and brought to book.

HealthI’ve Not Received Any Treatment, Says Abuja COVID-19 Patient by Kwanza(op): 1:31pm On Apr 16, 2020
A patient quarantined at the Abuja Isolation Centre says she has not received any form of treatment since April 2 when she was moved to the facility.

The patient, identified as Susan Idoko, had been brought to the Abuja Isolation Centre from Benue State after she was said to have tested positive for coronavirus, The PUNCH reports.

But speaking on a telephone interview on Channels Television on Thursday morning, the UK-returnee said she is not feeling sick.

Idoko, who came into the country from London on March 22 for her mother’s burial, said she wants to return to her family in the UK.

The interviewer had said the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said she tested positive for coronavirus but the indigene of Benue retorted, “That is a lie. I came from London on the 22nd of March.

“The hospital told me that because I am coming from a high-risk area, the standard procedure was for them to call the state ministry of health. And innocently, I said, yes, come and run a test on me.

“The photocopies of the result were brought to me because I told the minister of health that if I don’t get the result, nobody does another on me, I am not going to accept it.

“I was transferred from Makurdi on the 2nd of April.

“They did one (test) in Makurdi and another one in Abuja on the 10th of April.

“From Makurdi to this place, I have not taken a dose of panadol or any drug or treatment.

“From the past 22 days, apart from when I went to the private hospital in Makurdi, where I was given analgesics for pain relieve, I have not taken a panadol from anybody both in Benue State Isolation Centre and here in Abuja Isolation Centre.

“I am just inside my room; I am not allowed to come out. If I peep outside my room, they will tell me. ‘Madam, go inside, go inside’.

“The doctors come every day to ask for my welfare though. On April 3rd, the doctors said they suggest I take malaria treatment because I was coming from a place where there is no malaria and in Nigeria, there is malaria. I said I thought they brought me here for COVID-19, why malaria now?

“The following day, another doctor came in and said, ‘we are going to treat you for mild symptoms’. I said, what’s mild symptoms? My vital signs are okay. My breathing is okay, I don’t have a temperature. So, what are you treating me for?

“I am not sick. I am healthy here. I want to get out. I came for my mom’s burial but because of the lockdown, it’s been postponed. If the burial is not holding, let me go and meet my children in London, I am not sick.”

PoliticsRamaphosa gives Okonjo-Iweala another job, as AU Special envoy by Kwanza(op): 9:41am On Apr 13, 2020
The Chairperson of the African Union, President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and three other Africans as AU Special Envoys.

Their job will be to mobilise international support for Africa’s efforts to address the economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Others appointed are Dr Donald Kaberuka, Mr Tidjane Thiam and Mr Trevor Manuel

The Special Envoys will be tasked with soliciting rapid and concrete support as pledged by the G20, the European Union and other international financial institutions.

Ramaphosa said: “In the light of the devastating socio-economic and political impact of the pandemic on African countries these institutions need to support African economies that are facing serious economic challenges with a comprehensive stimulus package for Africa, including deferred debt and interest payments.

“The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been global in both scale and reach, and this necessitates coordinated international action to capacitate all countries to respond effectively, but most particularly developing countries that continue to shoulder a historical burden of poverty, inequality and underdevelopment,” President Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa added: “The sentiment expressed in two recent letters written to the G20 by a group of world leaders and a team of esteemed economists underscore the importance of bolstering health systems in poorer countries; this can only be done with the support of the international community.”

Dr Okonjo-Iweala is an internationally respected economist and development expert and served two terms as Minister of Finance of Nigeria.

She has also served as Managing Director of the World Bank.

Dr Kaberuka is an economist and former President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

He is the former Finance Minister of Rwanda and in 2016 was appointed as a Special Envoy of the African Union on sustain-able financing for the AU and funding for Peace in Africa.

Mr Manuel was the longest-serving Minister of Finance in South Africa and formerly headed the country’s National Planning Commission.

In 2018 he was appointed as an Investment Envoy by Ramaphosa to engage domestic and international investors as part of the country’s national investment drive.

Mr Thiam, a French-Ivorian, is a banker and businessman. He is the former Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse.

He also served as Chief Financial Officer and CEO of Prudential.

He has a background in management consulting and worked for McKinsey and Company.

Ramaphosa said the appointment of the special envoys would expedite the process of securing economic support to enable countries on the continent to respond swiftly to this grave public health emergency.

“The African Union is immensely encouraged by the support that has been extended by the international community thus far”, he said.

“It is an affirmation that as nations of the world, we are all in this together.

We must now focus on efforts to marshal every resource at our disposal to ensure that this pandemic is contained, and does not result in the collapse of already ailing economies and financial systems on the continent,” President Ramaphosa added.

PoliticsMaltreatment Of Nigerians In China: Why I Like Sani Abacha – Fani-kayode by Kwanza(op): 1:41pm On Apr 11, 2020
Critic, Femi Fani-Kayode has revealed reason he liked late Nigeria’s despotic leader, Gen. Sani Abacha, in view of the maltreatment of Nigerians in China.

He said he liked the despotic leader because he would have acted and sent Chinese out of the country in the midst of alleged inhuman treatment meted out to Nigerians in China.

Several reports had it that some Nigerians in China were being sent out of their houses and in hotels.

According to him, one thing he knew was that Abacha would not have taken this nonsense from the Chinese.

Fani-Kayode said if Abacha had been in power today, many Chinese would have been deported by now and that no Chinese doctor would have been allowed in.

“Say what you like about Gen. Sani Abacha, but one thing I know is that he would not have taken this nonsense from the Chinese.

“If he had been in power today many of them would have been deported by now and no Chinese doctors would have been allowed in,” he tweeted.

Fani-Kayode added that foreign policy and diplomacy is based on reciprocity and mutual respect.

“Based on the way in which the Chinese Government is treating our people, I call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to arrest the same number of Chinese citizens that are here, seize their passports and quarantine them indefinitely,” he added.

The Katsina State Government said on Friday the wife and two children of the medical doctor, who died of COVID-19 in Daura local government area of the state had tested positive for the virus.

The state governor, Aminu Masari, who disclosed this to journalists, said the wife and two children had been taken to an isolation centre at the Federal Medical Center, Katsina where they were being treated.

The late physician, Dr. Aliyu Yakubu, had traveled to Lagos and returned to Daura after which he fell sick and was later confirmed to be infected with the disease.

He was admitted at the Nigeria Air Force Reference Hospital, Daura where he died on April 4.

The governor said: “Samples of about 23 people were taken to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control; three tested positive for COVID-19.”

“We are still taking samples of people suspected to have had contact with the victims; we shall trace anyone that had any contact with the victims. We shall ensure that the pandemic is not spread further.”

The government announced a total lockdown on Daura local government area of the state to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

“The government, in consultation with the local leadership in Daura, has decided to lockdown Daura local government area completely, beginning from 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11,” Masari added.

He, however, said the COVID-19 Rapid Response Committee would allow four pharmaceutical outfits and three grain stores to operate, to enable people to buy what they might need.

The governor directed security agents to ensure that people complied with the directives, and warned residents against daring government’s seriousness on the matter.

“We want people to cooperate with the government so that we can contain the disease. The lockdown may come with some difficulties, but it is very necessary so as to save lives,” Masari concluded.
