Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has lifted the social distancing order imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on religious congregations in mosques and churches across the state. Bello, in a statement issued in Lokoja on Thursday, said that the lifting of the ban was to enable religious bodies to resume their normal worship and services. The statement was signed by Mr Kingsley Fanwo, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication. The state government urged all religious leaders to put in place preventive and precautionary measures in their various worship centres in order to contain the outbreak and spread of corona virus in the state. Specifically, the governor directed that hand sanitisers must be provided for worshippers at the entrances of all churches and mosques. ” Sitting arrangements in mosques and churches should be done to ensure social distancing. ” We also urge churches and mosques to make their services as brief as possible in order not to keep a large crowd of worshipers within an enclosed confinement,” the governor said Bello then enjoined the religious leaders to continue to pray for the end of the pandemic so that the world could return to normal activities. NAN reports that Gov. Bello on March 20, ordered the closure of public and private schools (tertiary, secondary and primary) in the state indefinitely as measures in preventing the spread of coronavirus disease in the state. Bello said the closure of schools and other public gathering places take effect from Monday, March 23, 2020. The governor also banned all forms of gathering involving 30 people and above as part of the preventive measures against the spread of the virus. https://thenationonlineng.net/covid-19-kogi-govt-lifts-ban-on-religious-gatherings/ Mynd44 |

If Nigeria succeeds in borrowing the proposed $6.9bn from international lenders including the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development bank to help counteract the impact of coronavirus on the economy, the country’s debt stock may hit N30 trillion before the end of 2020. Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed had on Monday, said the government will ask for $3.4bn from the IMF, $2.5bn from the World Bank and another $1bn from the African Development Bank (AfDB), an amount totalling N2.48 trillion (N360/$1). According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) the nation’s total public debts, consisting of external and domestic debts, stands at N27.4 trillion as at 31st December 2019. Rating agencies, Fitch, Moody’s and S&P Global had earlier downgraded Nigeria’s ratings, with the latest of them Fitch, downgrading the country’s ratings to sovereign credit rating (long-term, foreign currency) by one notch from B+ to B, and maintained the negative outlook. According to the agencies, Nigeria faces the crashing oil price and the coronavirus pandemic with limited, and shrinking external buffers. Fitch’s numbers rest upon average oil prices of US$35/b this year and US$45/b in 2021, and the CBN’s “continued reluctance to adjust the exchange rate”. According to the members of the Organised Private Sector (OPS), the growing national debt is a cause for concern as the profile has grown from N12.6 trillion in 2015 to N27.4 trillion at the end of 2019. With oil prices trading below the 2020 budget benchmark, they noted that in the 2020 budget, debt service commitment and recurrent spending were beginning to crowd out capital expenditure, adding that the trajectory was not consistent with the country’s national aspiration to build infrastructure and a competitive economy. The debt portfolio comprising state and federal debt stocks were N9.02 trillion or 31.55 per cent of the debt was external while N18.37 trillion or 67.07 per cent of the debt was domestic. Lagos state accounted for 10.82 per cent of the total domestic debt stock, the highest while Yobe State has the least debt stock in this category with a contribution of 0.71 per cent to the total domestic debt stock. According to the report, Nigeria’s total public debt portfolio as of December 31, 2019, total external debt was N9.02 trillion ($27.67 billion) with a percentage of 32.93. Break down showed that federal government debt instrument accounted for N7.53 trillion ($23.11 billion) with a percentage of 27.50, states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) accounted for N1.48 trillion ($12.59 billion) with a percentage of 5.43. A further breakdown of the NBS report showed that total domestic debt stood at $56.37 billion at N18.37 trillion with a percentage of 67.07. Federal government domestic debt stood atN14.27 trillion ( $43.78 billion) with a percentage of 52.09, with states and FCT contributing N4.10 trillion ( $12.59 billion) with a percentage of 14.99. The report showed that the total public debt is the addition of external and domestic debt instruments for the year 2019, which was N27.40 trillion ($84.05 billion). This accounted for 100 per cent of both domestic and external debt instruments for the entire 2019. https://m.guardian.ng/business-services/nigerias-debt-stock-may-hit-n30tr-with-new-loans/amp/ |
Management of Benue State University Teaching Hospital says it issued sack letter on only three, not 30 doctors, as the Association of Resident Doctors have claimed. The association at the hospital has threatened to go on strike if the hospital doesn’t withdraw the letters at the end of an ultimatum, claiming the hospital is attempting to impose a six-year window for residency training on resident doctors instead of the eight years allowed. Deputy Director, Head of Public Relations at BSUTH, Cephas Hough, issued a statement saying, “We wish to inform that, whereas, the Association alleged that 30 of their members have been ‘sacked’ by the Management of the hospital, we wish to point out that only three resident doctors were terminated upon service of month notice in compliance with directives of the Management Board of the hospital. “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to make it clear that residency is a time bound training program. The Residency Training Policy of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, requires resident doctors to pass all prescribed examinations within a maximum period of 6 years. “Consequently, all resident doctors whose appointments with the hospital have been terminated have exceeded the prescribed period for the programme,” the statement reads in part. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/benue-hospital-insisted-it-sacked-3-not-30-doctors.html Dominique Lalasticlala |

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has criticised the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for exempting Dangote trucks from COVID-19 restriction order in the state. DAILY POST recalls that Ogun, alongside Lagos and Abuja, have been shut down, in accordance with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari, to reduce the spread of Coronavirus in Nigeria. On Friday, the state government announced the closure of 12 major roads into the state to prevent any vehicular movement within and outside Ogun. However, the state government, through a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, on Saturday, told security and traffic agencies to exempt Dangote trucks from the movement restriction order. The letter reads: “This is to confirm that Dangote Plc. trucks are exempted from the restrictions of movement and total lockdown of the state as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “You are requested to permit the trucks to move freely within the state because of the essential multi-sectoral services the company renders to the public. Thank You.” But, Fani-Kayode, in his reaction, asked Gov Abiodun to explain why Dangote trucks must be granted waivers in spite of the lockdown, asking if some were more equal than others. Fani-Kayode, on his Facebook page, described as a crying shame, the fact that “a few sons of the South West bow, quiver and tremble before their masters.” He queried if Dangote trucks “are immune to COVID-19.” His words: “Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state ought to explain this. Are some more equal than others? It is a crying shame that a few sons of the South West bow, quiver and tremble before their masters. “Are Dangote’s drivers and trucks immune to COVID-19? Will you give similar exemptions to southern businessmen and traders? Shame on you!” Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abiodun on New Media, Emmanuel Ojo, said the state government has granted exemption to all manufacturers of essential food items like rice, sugar, noodles, flour, salt, water, dairy foods, detergents and others. He said it was not only Dangote that received the exemption. However, Nigerians are seeking to know why Dangote was the only company mentioned in the said letter. https://dailypost.ng/2020/04/06/covid-19-lockdown-gov-abiodun-under-attack-for-exempting-dangote-trucks/
