Chad has withdrawn its 1,200-strong force who were on months-long mission fighting Boko Haram from Nigeria. Chadian Army’s spokesman also confirmed on Saturday that none of their personnel remain in Nigeria. “It’s our troops who went to aid Nigerian soldiers months ago returning home. They have finished their mission,” spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa said. “None of our soldiers remains in Nigeria,” he added, without specifying whether they might be replaced following Friday’s pullout. “Those who have come back will return to their sector at Lake Chad,” Bermandoa said. However, Chad’s general chief of staff General Tahir Erda Tahiro said that if countries in the region which have contributed to a multinational anti-jihadist force were in agreement, more troops will likely be sent in. “If the states around Lake Chad agree on a new mission there will surely be another contingent redeployed on the ground,” Tahiro told AFP. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2020/01/04/boko-haram-chad-withdraws-all-troops-from-nigeria/amp/ |
Reports just reaching Daily Sun suggests that some suspected Boko Haram insurgents are said to have attacked Michika community with sporadic gunshot heard by residents. The attackers were said to have attacked Kopa and Wurogayadi in the outskirt of Shuwa, causing chaos in the area. The attack is said to have happened at around 7 pm Tuesday and residents of Michika community are reported to have fled the town heading towards Uba while others are said to have taken refuge in nearby mountains, multiple local sources told Daily Sun. The Sun however gathered that the military and local hunters have been mobilized to confront to address the security challenge. The PPRO of Adamawa police command, Suleiman Nguroje confirmed the security breach saying the police force had deployed personnel to curb the situation. PPRO however could not confirm whether there are casualties as at the time of filing this report. The senator representing northern Adamawa, Ishaku Abbo told Daily Sun he had just had a discussion with the relevant security operatives and the military have mobilised to address the situation. Ishaku Abbo said, “I just had a discussion with the appropriate security establishments in Michika and Madagali, the situation is under control. “The Army are fully Mobilized and our Airforce have moved their jet fighters. “Remain indoors as the mild security challenge is already under the control of our forces.” As at the time of filing this report, it is yet unclear whether there are casualties. Michika is one of the seven local governments in northern Adamawa that was occupied by the Boko Haram insurgents and has been grappling with challenges of recovering from the debilitating blow of the attack as the community has remained cut-off from electricity since 2014 and the three major bridges linking the community with the rest of the state have been in a state of disrepair after they were destroyed by the insurgents. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/breaking-boko-haram-fighters-attack-adamawa-community/ Oam4j Lalasticlala Mynd44 |

Zamfara hisbah commission says it arrested a police officer and three women allegedly engaged in immorality at a hotel in Gusau, the state capital. Atiku Zawuyya, chairman of the commission, spoke while parading the suspects at the commission’s headquarters on Monday. NAN reports that the manager of the hotel was also arrested by officials of the hisbah commission. Zawuyya said the police officer, who is serving with the central police station in Gusau, was arrested with the three girls in a room at the hotel while allegedly committing acts contrary to the Sharia law. He said preliminary investigation conducted by the commission showed that one of the three girls is from Kaduna state while the two others are from the same family in Zamfara. The chairman said the commission had warned the management of the hotel several times against harbouring such people but that it failed to comply with the rules and regulation guiding the operation of hotel business in the state. Zawuyya said the suspects would be charged to court after full investigation. https://www.thecable.ng/extra-zamfara-hisbah-arrests-policeman-for-being-with-3-women-in-hotel |

A Croatian court on Monday sentenced former prime minister Ivo Sanader to six years in jail and the boss of Hungary’s MOL energy group to two years for bribery. Sanader — already serving time for a separate graft conviction — and MOL’s Zsolt Hernadi were convicted for “receiving and giving a bribe” concerning a 2009 deal after the Hungarian firm purchased shares in local oil and gas group INA, the judge said. Judge Maja Stampar Stipic said the deal allowed then-PM Sanader to pocket 10 million euros ($11 million) in exchange for granting the Hungarian firm control over INA. MOL, whose main shareholder is the Budapest government, has a 49 percent INA stake, while Zagreb holds a 44 percent stake. “As the top state official, Sanader … jeopardised Croatia’s vital economic interests,” prosecutor Tonci Petkovic said in his final statement. Defence attorneys for CEO Hernadi, who was tried in absentia, argued that the prosecutors did not prove an “incriminating tie” between the two defendants. Both men pleaded not guilty and can appeal the verdict. The former premier was already found guilty of the charge in 2012, but the country’s top court overturned his eight-and-a-half-year jail sentence and called for a re-trial. Croatia has sought Hernadi’s arrest for years, but Hungary has refused to extradite him. Sanader, conservative prime minister from 2003 to 2009, has faced several other graft cases in which he is suspected of embezzling millions of euros. In April he was jailed to serve a six-year sentence in another corruption case. In 2018 he was also sentenced to two and half years for war profiteering, but acquitted of abuse of power charges in another trial. Sanader is the highest official to be charged with corruption in Croatia since independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Tackling corruption was key for the country’s successful bid to join the European Union in 2013. https://www.channelstv.com/?p=460048 |

Zamfara state government has banned the sale of cows and cattle without receipts to justify that it is not stolen livestock. Addressing newsmen in Gusau, the commissioner of security and home affairs, Abubakar Daura said the rate at which stolen cows and cattle were being sold in Zamfara markets has become unbearable and worrisome. Daura explained that the state government has decided that the sale of cows and cattle would be carried out under its watchful eyes, stressing that security operatives in the state has been instructed to carry out the assignment. The commissioner noted that five trailers loaded with cows and cattle were arrested in Kaduna and Lagos state as they were suspected of being stolen from Zamfara state. “We have been receiving series of reports bordering on stolen cows and cattle and the state government has recovered 500 stolen cows through the committee constituted by the state government on security issues,” he lamented. “The state government would no longer tolerate the sale of cows and cattle with out any receipt in any market of the state” Speaking further the commissioner said the state government has enacted a law which stipulates that no vehicle would move out of the state or inside the state after 6pm to 6 am. He assured that security operatives have been instructed to verify the receipt of cows and cattle being conveyed, pointing out that before any seller these animals to anybody both the buyer and seller must take pictures together. “We introduced this so that it would be very easy to detect the sellers of stolen cows and cattle and the buyers of the stolen cows so they can be arrested as the are partners in crime,” he said. https://dailypost.ng/2019/12/26/zamfara-govt-bans-selling-of-cattle-without-receipts-pictures/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 |
Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has condemned Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State for accusing him of inciting ethnic disharmony in Ijaw land. Dickson also accused his Rivers State counterpart of promoting “wicked clandestine ethnic supremacist agenda” in the politics of Rivers. The Governor’s claim was contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fidelis Soriwei and made available to reporters on Sunday According to the outgoing Governor, Wike was using the disputed oil wells between the two states as a subterfuge to create disunity and cover up his deliberate policy to under-develop Ijaw communities The governor said Wike’s comments on the disputed oil wells was reckless, childish and uncivilized with an evil intent to attack age-long bonds among brothers. He said he had tried over the years to restrain himself from responding to the unprovoked and unguarded remarks and excesses of Wike out of respect for the Rivers people. Dickson warned his counterpart to stop looking at Bayelsa as his conquered political empire and dismissed the Rivers governor’s claims that his state-owned Soku oil wells. Dickson explained that “while Soku is a Kalabari (Ijaw) community in Rivers State, the disputed oil wells are located in Oluasiri, Nembe local government area of Bayelsa. “Ijaw leaders made sustained efforts to forge solid bonds of unity among the peoples’ design that Wike was trying in vain to destroy the relationship.” “Bayelsa under my leadership led a Pan-Ijaw agenda, which culminated in the building of solid bonds of unity across the six states comprising Ijaw indigenes. “Wike’s reckless expansionist agenda led him to start needless wars with all the neighbouring states of Imo, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and more to come to the detriment of the unity of the Niger Delta and the South-South. Governor Dickson also made reference to the Supreme Court decision on the issue that directed the National Boundary Commission to carry out a fresh delineation and demarcation exercise in the affected area. He said: “The Good people of Rivers State should not be preys in the hands of Wike who want to promote disunity and hatred in Ijaw land because he is promoting an ethnic supremacist political agenda in the state. “The Governor of our neighbouring state, Governor Wike of Rivers State who by the way is used to making careless and very childish remarks from time to time, went into his usual habit some few days ago. “Let me put it on record, this is the first time I will formally respond to Wike’s childishness in this formal way. I have always ignored with pain and regret all the previous vituperations and his attempt to belittle and intimidate this state and our leadership. “His unfriendliness towards this state is not hidden. It’s not just me, it’s about our state and our people, he has done that a couple of times but I decided to stomach it for several reasons. “Also, my involvement in the affairs of the Niger Delta and my commitment to the wellbeing of our people, made me to always shied away from having open confrontations with a brother governor, particularly of his state that is so closely tied to our state. “As we speak, because of the level of social and business interactions, most of our people and leaders live in Port Harcourt, and so I have been very reluctant since he started his unreasonable hostility towards us. “I have been very reluctant even to respond publicly, out of respect for our historical ties, respect for the good people of Rivers state itself, whom he is misrepresenting, and the other point is yes Wike can attack Bayelsa, because he doesn’t have his indigenous Ikwerre people in Bayelsa state. “But the Governor of Bayelsa has his indigenous Ijaw people who are major stakeholders in Rivers state. So as a result of these, for the past four to five years, since he started his childish and unguarded drunken behavior, I’ve been very reserved responding. “But I have had to formally do so and Governor Wike knows that I’m not someone who shies away. I have had to hold myself because the Governor of Bayelsa represents much more than governorship of a state. Out of respect for our people in Rivers state, I’ve always held back, but this time, no, he has gone too far. “And so I want to use this opportunity to condemn the way and manner he threatens and shows disrespect to our leaders in that state and I want to particularly respond to what he said concerning my visit to our revered leader and father, the Amanyanabo of Kalabari, who will be 90 years next year. “And I want to make it clear as governor of this state, either me or any other person who will be governor, we don’t need Governor Wike’s permission to visit our traditional rulers and elders in Port Harcourt or any part of Rivers state. “Since he doesn’t understand courtesy and is not prepared to show courtesy, then that courtesy will not be extended to him. Bayelsa is not an annex of Rivers state that he can intimidate at will. “If we are quiet, it’s because it is strategic, especially with me as the oldest governor even in the south-south, but this nonsense from Wike must stop. “Wike should stop interfering with the politics of Bayelsa state, you all know what he did in the PDP primaries and the roles he played supporting the APC in their federal takeover of our state, there are so many things he has been doing that I keep quiet about. “Wike should learn to respect his colleagues for whom he has shown scant regard not just for me, and Bayelsa. He is having oil wars with every state around him; with Imo and Akwa Ibom states. What is wrong with him?” https://dailypost.ng/2019/12/22/gov-dickson-attacks-wike-makes-revelations-about-rivers-governor/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 |

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, said Nigeria had no option but to stick to the deal that would continue to provide safety for ships berthing on Nigerians shores thereby guaranteeing the nation’s aspiration to sustained increased revenue. According to Lawan: “I think we have a challenge here, which is, that, if we do not like what this company is doing we should bring our own. Until we are able to do that, I think we have to continue with the present arrangement.” http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2019/12/18/senate-confirms-amcon-firs-board-members/

The Federal Government has ordered an investigation into the Friday invasion of the Federal High Court, Abuja, by the operatives of the Department of State Service, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has said. The DSS, in their bid to rearrest the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the February 2019 general election, Omoyele Sowore, had invaded the court, during which the judge fled the scene. Malami spoke to reporters on the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, after paying a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the court, Justice John Tsoho. He evaded question on the reason for Sowore’s rearrest, which had drawn criticisms locally and internationally. Fielding questions from reporters, he said he did not visit the Chief Judge over Sowore’s case but to congratulate him on his confirmation by the Senate as the substantive Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. Asked if he was not appalled by the DSS’ conduct, Malami said, “Whatever affects the integrity of the court is a worrisome issue for us. “I can never be preemptive of an incident over which I was not a live witness to.” He added, “But one thing I am certain of is that the government has put in place mechanism for investigation of the reported incident. “So, I would not like to be preemptive in terms of a conclusion, one way or the other, without allowing the consummation and conclusion of the investigation process.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/fg-has-ordered-probe-of-court-invasion-by-dss-malami/amp/

Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, says the Department of State Services (DSS) sent a delegation to the court on Monday afternoon. Speaking at the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting event in Lagos, Falana said the delegation visited the court to apologise for invading the premises. The secret police had invaded the federal high court in Abuja on Friday to rearrest Omoyele Sowore, convener of RevolutionNow Movement, barely 24 hours after he was released on the order of the court. “This afternoon, the SSS management sent a delegation to the court to apologise for the invasion of the court on Friday,” Falana said. “We just fight injustice until it is over in our country.” Falana had earlier said the head of the DSS team who invaded the court apologised to Ijeoma Ojukwu, the presiding judge, in her chambers. Video clips which made the rounds showed the chaos inside the courtroom where Sowore was pinned down by a man alleged to be an operative of the DSS while he (Sowore) was surrounded by his supporters who fought back. The DSS has, however, denied infiltrating the court. The service said it did not attempt arresting Sowore inside the court, alleging that alleging that his supporters only “stage-managed the drama” to bring the service to disrepute. Justifying the rearrest of Sowore, the DSS said he “resorted to acts inimical to security”, adding that it remains a law-abiding agency. https://www.thecable.ng/falana-dss-has-sent-another-delegation-to-apologise-for-court-invasion |

Members of the All Progressives Congress(APC) who contested for various elective offices in Akwa Ibom in the last elections are seeking the removal of the state resident electoral commissioner, Mike Igini. Addressing a press conference in Uyo at the weekend under the aegis of the All Progressive Congress Aspirants Forum (APCAF), they insisted that Igini should not be allowed to conduct the rerun elections in the state. State Coordinator of APCAF, Dr. Chris Enoch said the call for Igini’s redeployment from Akwa Ibom became necessary as the party had lost confidence in his integrity, adding that Igini is biased against the APC. Enoch said it is the firm position of the forum that Igini should not be allowed to conduct any rerun election in the state as he would still vent his anger against APC while colluding with PDP. The statement reads in parts ” It become particularly worrisome and nostalgic that an umpire would veer from these rules and against the run of play to act in such a manner that would cause the electorates to impute shear compromise and corruption on an umpire as would give credence to his utter disdain for a particular party or her candidates to such an extent that it would smack of a personal vendetta. “It is even worse when the impression is created and it resonates across the land that this attitude is linked with his venomous disdain for the party which he links with a particular religion or ethnic bloc. “This stigma on the umpire vitiate whatever iota of credibility which he so easily and voluptuously mouths with false pride. In the case of Igini, the initial confidence and trust in which the Akwa Ibom electorates held him has been completely eroded and was mere gratuitous given the acclaimed integrity of INEC at the national level. “The preferential and VIP treatment of PDP was manifestly demonstrated during the pre 2019 General Elections Enlightenment/Interaction meetings VB of INEC with all the parties in the state and their stakeholders including their gubernatorial candidates.” The Forum maintained that “due and commensurate action should be taken by INEC headquarters, Abuja to inculcate some noble sense of patriotism and transparency in Mr. Igini.” “Igini’s post-election utterance clearly demonstrate the inert hatred and disgust he nursed for APC as a party and some of its principal actors. Igini sometime ago appears on screen to castigate APC candidates who complained of INEC’s underhand tactics that saw to their failure at the last election. “On the basis of the foregoing incontrovertible facts and observations therefore, we members of APCAF Aspirants Forum, Akwa Ibom State Chapter call for the immediate redeployment or possible sack of Mr Igini and his irk in the Akwa Ibom State INEC and the posting of a new and impartial Resident Electoral Commissioner and principal staff to AKS, such as would inspire confidence in the AKS electorates preparatory to the conduct of a free, fair credible and acceptable rerun election,” the statement added. https://thenationonlineng.net/rerun-apc-aspirants-in-aibom-seek-iginis-removal/ |
Three policemen, four personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and one maintenance staff attached to the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Bayelsa State Government House, Mrs. Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown were on Thursday arrest over alleged involvement in the theft of N 3.5 million from the office. The alleged theft, which reportedly occurred on Wednesday night, was discovered on Thursday morning with the safe where the cash was kept reportedly vandalised. Sources close to the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff confirmed that the office where the money was kept, which had two entrances, was burgled. It was gathered that the two entrances were guarded by policemen and many wondered how the bogglers had access to the cash. It was gathered that the order for the arrest of the policemen on duty at the time of the theft, was ordered by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Uche Anozia. Already, detectives from the department of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the State Police Command is investigating the incident. A Government House source said that the theft of such a huge amount was shocking to the Deputy Chief of Staff and other officials of the State Government. Attempts to get confirmation from the officials of the State Government proved abortive as they kept mum over the incident. An official that spoke on the incident under anonymity, said that “only the policemen have been arrested because they were on duty at the time of the theft.” Confirming the incident, SP Asinim Butswat Police Public Relations Officer Bayelsa State Command, said: “On 5th December 2019, at about 0850 hours, the Command received a report of Burglary and Stealing in the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Yenagoa. “It was reported that the main entrance door to the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff was broken and the Safe inside the office was destroyed. “The crime scene was visited by policemen and it was further revealed that the sum of Three Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira was stolen. “Three Policemen, four personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and one maintenance staff on guard duty at the Governor’s office were arrested and are being interrogated at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Yenagoa. Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, on Thursday said it has sacked over 600 members of staff over alleged irregular employment, overage and sundry other allegations. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Olanipekun, said the decision of the university council followed adoption on Thursday of the audit report carried out by a group of external auditors. Olanipekun, who addressed journalists on resolution of the council meeting in Ado-Ekiti, said the sacking would save about N200m for the university monthly. He said that the general staff audit “was sequel to the findings in the Report of the Visitation Panel as accepted by the Government White Paper to the university, which noted, among other things, that there were over-staffing, redundancy and personnel misalignment in virtually all the sections of the university and which astronomically increased the wage bill beyond its capacity to pay.” Olanipekun, who did not give the exact number of affected workers, said, “228 members of staff could not produce or show evidence of Primary School Leaving Certificate. “There were some ghost workers whose names were found on the university payroll without being on the university nominal role. “Some members of staff presented falsified birth and educational certificates. “Some of the members of staff lacked the required basic educational qualification. “Some members of staff were illegally retained in the university services after having been due to retire. “There are other cases of over aged staff. “The decision to disengage the affected workers was after due consideration of the issues involved and in the overall best interest of the university to be properly positioned for local relevance and global competitiveness.” https://punchng.com/ekiti-varsity-sacks-600-over-illegal-appointment-others/

The Federal Inland Revenue Service on Thursday denied claims made by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation that FIRS illegally deducted and failed to remit N210bn into the Federation Account. Speaking on the sidelines of the third annual meeting of the Nigerian Tax Research Network in Abuja, the Executive Chairman, FIRS, Babatunde Fowler, told journalists that his agency did not know where the Auditor-General for the Federation, Anthony Ayine, got his (Ayine) information. On Wednesday, an audit report signed by Ayine and released by the OAGF stated that out of the N6.4tn generated by revenue collection agencies in 2017, about N1.5tn was deducted and not remitted into the Federation Account in violation of the provisions of the Constitution. The report stated that the FIRS generated N2.66tn but paid about N2.45tn into Federation Account, which implied that the service deducted and failed to remit N210bn. When asked to explain why the agency deducted the sum, Fowler replied, “I don’t know where he (Ayine) got that information from because all the revenue that we generate goes to the Federation Account. We collect our monthly revenue during FAAC. “And that happens the same time that states, Local Governments and agencies collect their own revenue. So maybe we’ll have to talk to him and let him explain how that’s possible.” https://punchng.com/n210bn-illegal-deductions-firs-denies-auditor-generals-claims/ |
