Homily of His Lordship Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah at the Funeral Mass of Seminarian Michael Nnadi at Good Shepherd Seminary Kaduna (11th February 2020). 1. We have gathered around the remains of Michael in supplication but also as solemn witnesses to the penetrating darkness that hovers over our country. I have the rare honour of being considered the principal mourner in this ugly tragedy. It is not an honour that I am worthy of receiving. The honour belongs to God Almighty who created Michael and marked out this moment and pathway for him. The greater honour goes to his immediate family whose devotion as Catholics laid the foundation for his faith and vocation. To his grandmother, Mrs. Eunice Nwokocha, a most simple, beautiful and devout Catholic woman whose devotion and dedication saw Michael and his siblings, Chukwuebuka, Francis, Augustine, and Raphael brought up in all the fine principles and disciplines of the Catholic faith. 2. The way that Mama and her grandchildren handled this family tragedy has shown clearly the depth of their faith. I got to know Mama only after the sudden death of her daughter, Caroline, who had been a devoted Lector in our Cathedral. On the day we learned that Michael and the other Seminarians were kidnapped, breaking the news to Mama and the children was not an easy task. She took the news with equanimity and we focused on praying for their release. She and the grandchildren lived through the torments of the brutal, harsh and senseless haranguing of the kidnappers who are totally empty of any show of human emotions. 3. When the worst finally happened, breaking the news to her and the grandchildren proved to be one of the most emotionally challenging moments for me. She had called me three days earlier to say that the kidnappers had told her that they had killed Michael. I dismissed it by telling her that first, I had discouraged her from taking their calls, and secondly that this was part of the psychological warfare by these evil men. On Wednesday 29th, Peter Paul, the brave young man who had served as the main negotiator with the kidnappers, had already told us that they had gone to the village where the kidnappers said they had dumped the bodies of both Michael and Mrs. Ataga but found no corpses. This was the thread of consolation we held on to as a means of solace that Michael was still alive. 4. When we concluded the negotiations with the kidnappers on Thursday evening, I was in the Seminary to receive the three Seminarians and, although we received only two, I was still confident that Michael was still alive. We were simply going to sit and wait out for the next call and the agonizing round of negotiations again. I left for Abuja that same evening to continue my trip to Sokoto the next day. It was on my way to the airport to catch a flight back to Sokoto on that Saturday morning that Fr Daboh called to tell me that the corpse of Mrs. Ataga had been found and that there was a second unidentified corpse which they were being asked to come and identify if it was Michael. My heart sank. 5. After the call, I switched off my phone in denial but hoping for some reprieve to enable me to board my flight with some sanity. I arrived Sokoto and refused to switch on my phone for some time. When I finally did, I refused to read the text messages, but then, Fr Habila’s call came through at about 1pm with the news that, sadly, they had identified the corpse as that of Michael. I did not know where to start and how to break the news to Mama. Happily, two of our senior Parishioners Sir Julius Dike and Matthews Otalike were on hand and I summoned them to my house. It took us the better part of seven hours to negotiate how to break the news because, first, Mama was in the market and I felt she should at least finish the day’s business in peace. Finally breaking the news opened a different chapter in this ugly, painful but memorable tragedy. Like the death of Lazarus, it would become clear to me that Michael’s death would bring glory to God. 6. Later that evening as I sat down to try and console Mama, she looked up at me and said tearfully, “My Lord, you said Michael was still alive. Is he really dead?” Before I could say anything, she provided a moving answer: “My Lord, but Michael entered Seminary with all his heart and body, all”, she said with finality. From that evening, I watched her regain her composure and right up to Saturday, the evening before I left Sokoto, she had become a consoler and an inspiration to others. 7. The depth and impact of this tragedy belongs first, to the three surviving colleagues of Michael, the entire Seminary community led by the Rector, Fr. Habila Daboh, his team of formators and entire family of Good Shepherd Seminary. All have lived through almost two months of trauma, agony, pain and despair. They have been held together by the glue of deep faith, hope and family solidarity. I commend all the Formators for standing together and guiding the Seminarians through this dark tunnel of emotional pain in the days that turned to weeks, and weeks that turned to months. The entire Catholic community in the Province, led by our Metropolitan, Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso, all shared in this burden. His Grace and the Rector will both speak to us at the end of the Mass. 8. The third layer of pain has been borne by the entire country and the Catholic world. The national and international reactions to the death of this young man have made me step back and ask what message God has for our country. Michael is the first Seminarian to carry the mark of this brutality and wickedness. Priests have died in the hands of these wicked human beings. Michael was only a Seminarian in his first year of training. I had seen him in his cassock which he wore in my presence, not with pride but with dignity. Why would the tragic death of a young man such as him elicit such an unprecedented level of emotions here and around the world? 9. Maria Lozano, a staff of the Aid to the Church In Need, an organisation dedicated to the cause of the persecution of Christians around the world, called me frantically immediately after the news of the kidnapping of the Seminarians went out. The next day, she sent me an emotional voice message to say that she heard that Michael was an orphan and that since the kidnappers will be looking for money might his life be in danger if they realise that he is an orphan? Could she mobilise especially mothers to become parents for him, to keep him and others in their hearts and to continue to pray for him? Maria remained with us emotionally and requested for information about the burial. 10. When the Archbishop approved the date of the burial, I passed the information to her immediately. By the next day, February 5th, she sent me a message to say that when she asked people around the world to light a candle for Michael on the date of his burial, 2, 436 persons from Afghanistan, Pakistan, United States of America, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Madagascar, South Africa, Congo, Mali, Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia responded. Germany alone had a total of 3,305 persons in a matter of hours. In the light of this, I wondered, who are we to mourn? Who are we to refuse this crown of honour and glory? We ceased to mourn for Michael thereon. 11. Your Grace, my brother Bishops, Rev Fathers, Rev. Sisters, and all the good people of God, I therefore bring you only greetings and praise to God from all of us in Sokoto Diocese. This is a solemn moment for the body of Christ. This is for us the moment of decision. This is the moment that separates darkness from light, good from evil. Our nation is like a ship stranded on the high seas, rudderless and with broken navigational aids. Today, our years of hypocrisy, duplicity, fabricated integrity, false piety, empty morality, fraud and Pharisaism have caught up with us. Nigeria is on the crossroads and its future hangs precariously in a balance. This is a wakeup call for us. As St. Paul reminds us; The night is far spent, and the day is at hand. Therefore, let us cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light (Rom. 13:12). It is time to confront and dispel the clouds of evil that hover over us. 12. Nigeria is at a point where we must call for a verdict. There must be something that a man, nay, a nation should be ready to die for. Sadly, or even tragically, today, Nigeria, does not possess that set of goals or values for which any sane citizen is prepared to die for her. Perhaps, I should correct myself and say that the average office holder is ready to die to protect his office but not for the nation that has given him or her that office. The Yorubas say that if it takes you 25 years to practice madness, how much time would you have to put it into real life? We have practiced madness for too long. Our attempt to build a nation has become like the agony of Sisyphus who angered the gods and had to endure the frustration of rolling a stone up the mountain. Each time he got near the top, the gods would tip the stone back and he would go back to start all over again. What has befallen our nation? 13. Nigeria needs to pause for a moment and think. No one more than the President of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari who was voted for in 2015 on the grounds of his own promises to rout Boko Haram and place the country on an even keel. In an address at the prestigious Policy Think Tank, Chatham House in London, just before the elections, Major General Buhari told his audience: “I as a retired General and a former Head of State have always known about our soldiers. They are capable and they are well trained, patriotic, brave and always ready to do their duty. If am elected President, the world will have no reason to worry about Nigeria. Nigeria will return to its stabilizing role in West Africa. We will pay sufficient attention to the welfare of our soldiers in and out of service. We will develop adequate and modern arms and ammunition. We will improve intelligence gathering and border patrols to choke Boko Haram’s financial and equipment channels. We will be tough on terrorism and tough on its root causes by initiating a comprehensive economic development and promoting infrastructural development…we will always act on time and not allow problems to irresponsibly fester. And I, Muhammadu Buhari, will always lead from the front.” 14. There is no need to make any further comments on this claim. No one in that hall or anywhere in Nigeria doubted the President who ran his campaign on a tank supposedly full of the fuel of integrity and moral probity. No one could have imagined that in winning the Presidency, General Buhari would bring nepotism and clannishness into the military and the ancillary Security Agencies, that his government would be marked by supremacist and divisive policies that would push our country to the brink. This President has displayed the greatest degree of insensitivity in managing our country’s rich diversity. He has subordinated the larger interests of the country to the hegemonic interests of his co-religionists and clansmen and women. The impression created now is that, to hold a key and strategic position in Nigeria today, it is more important to be a northern Muslim than a Nigerian. 15. Today, in Nigeria, the noble religion of Islam has convulsed. It has become associated with some of worst fears among our people. Muslim scholars, traditional rulers and intellectuals have continued to cry out helplessly, asking for their religion and region to be freed from this chokehold. This is because, in all of this, neither Islam nor the north can identify any real benefits from these years that have been consumed by the locusts that this government has unleashed on our country. The Fulani, his innocent kinsmen, have become the subject of opprobrium, ridicule, defamation, calumny and obloquy. His north has become one large grave yard, a valley of dry bones, the nastiest and the most brutish part of our dear country. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=113227133581847&id=104436831127544&sfnsn=scwspmo |

Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, on Friday bagged a Pan African Award in defence of constitutional democracy in Nigeria by an American based human rights organization, Rectitude International Mission. Ozekhome was inducted into the hall of fame of the Pan African Heroes Foundation. Mike Ozekhome says he is delighted that his defence of human rights in Nigeria gained the attention of a global organisation. President of the body, Kerzner Rina-Yakuel, who conferred the award on the constitutional lawyer decried the mounting level of human rights abuses in the country, saying they have been monitoring activities in Nigeria for the past four years. Rina-Yakuel said the award was only given to individuals that not only stood to defend the rule of law in their country, but who had also through legal activism, fought for the enthronement of good governance in the continent. While accepting the award, Ozekhome said he was delighted that his modest contributions to the defence of human rights in the country gained the attention of an international organisation. He described the award as a catalyst that would further spur him to continue to fight against maladministration and rights violations in the country. He said he was worried that the federal government has continued to flout valid court orders relating to the bail of persons that are facing corruption related charges. He cited the case of the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, SAN. He said that Adoke has remained in detention despite the fact that he perfected all the bail conditions that were handed to him by a court of competent jurisdiction. https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/ozekhome-bags-pan-african-award-for-defending-democracy-in-nigeria/sy8zbj0.amp?__twitter_impression=true Lalasticlala Mynd44

The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday denied a report that it had endorsed the former governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi for the position of the Deputy National Chairman (South). The party insisted that Senator Ajimobi has not been endorsed for the position by the Southwest caucus of the party, saying the nominee from Ekiti, Senator Gbenga Aluko, remains the best and most qualified for the position in the spirit of equity and fair- play. The seat became vacant following the nomination, clearance and swearing-in of Adebayo as the Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment last year. A statement in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday, by the state APC Director of Media and Publicity, Sam Oluwalana, on behalf of the State Chairman of the party, Barrister Paul Omotosho, said there was no mention of any sort of endorsement at the APC zonal meeting held in Osogbo, Osun state capital on Wednesday. Omotoso described the report that Ajimobi’s had been endorsed as reckless and smacks of mischief and misinformation. The statement reads; “I was present at the meeting and nobody said anything about endorsing anybody for the position at that meeting”, Omotoso said. Omotoso stated that the party in Ekiti stands by the nominee from Ekiti, Senator Gbenga Aluko, as the best to occupy the seat. He added: ” We made our position clear that our state has to serve out its tenure and that we are endorsing Senator Gbenga Aluko for the position. “The South West chairman of the party, Pastor Oluwajana received a petition which we submitted at the meeting and promised to forward same to the National Secretariat of the party. That was all that transpired at the meeting. For anybody to say or report anything to the contrary, is not only false, but pure mischief”. The Ekiti caucus of the party had stormed the venue of the zonal meeting held at Osogbo, on Wednesday, protesting alleged plot to deprive Ekiti from filling the slot. The party insisted that Ekiti APC must be given the opportunity to fill the slot. https://thenationonlineng.net/ekiti-apc-denies-endorsing-ajimobi-for-south-deputy-natl-chairman/ |

The senate has passed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) budget of N238 billion for 2020. The budget was passed after Francis Alimikhena, chairman of the senate on customs, presented a report for consideration. Alimikhena said N98 billion out of the N238 billion would be spent on personnel cost while N15 billion and N123 billion would be spent on overhead and capital costs respectively. Details of the budget obtained by TheCable showed that N128 million was earmarked for television sets; N30 million for chairs and tables and N81 million for an unspecified number of shredding machines. Waste disposal equipment, scanners and power generating sets got N3.1 billion; N21.7 million and N927 million respectively. A total of N63 million was set aside for the purchase of refrigerators, N173.7 million for safe, file cabinets, cupboards and wall clocks. While boreholes and other water facilities will gulp N577 million, while N74 million will be spent on photocopiers. Under the overhead cost for which N15 billion was set aside, the service will spend N20 million on sewage charges – this is aside the N3 billion already earmarked for waste disposal equipment. The service will spend a sum of N70 million on internet charges and a sum of N10 million on books and newspapers combined. WHAT DID SENATORS HAVE TO SAY? Ibikunle Amosun, senator representing Ogun central, said sum earmarked for the purchase of television sets “is normal.” “If we do not look deeply we will rather be alluding that buying 128 million (worth of) television sets or even 16 billion for vehicles is on the high side,” Amosun said. “Without prejudice to all that has been said i think this is normal.” But the figure did not settle with Bala Na’Allah, senator representing Kebbi south. “What happened to the television sets they have,” he said. “Is it TV they will be watching.” For James Manager, senator representing Delta south, the report on the budget was not detailed. However, the budget passed after it was put to a voice vote. https://www.thecable.ng/n128m-for-tvs-n74m-for-photocopiers-inside-customs-2020-budget |

The Imo State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Raji Ibrahim has narrated how Imo North Action Alliance senatorial district candidate, Ndubuisi Emenike, was killed. The late Emenike was allegedly shot dead by one Sydney Ogudoro, an Assistant Superintendent of the Corps. The commandant, who sympathized with the people of the state and Nigerians at large over the sudden death, pacified the people and assured them that the corps would not leave any stone unturned in the investigation of the matter. Assuring the people that Civil Defence Corps and other sister security agencies would investigate the matter thoroughly, Ibrahim described the suspect, Sydney Ogudoro, as one of the most tactical officers of the command. “We don’t want to believe that it was an accidental discharge because, in the Civil Defence Corps, we don’t believe in accidental discharge, this is because the suspect is one of our senior officers,” he added. The PUNCH gathered that the suspect who was not directly attached to the deceased had allegedly shot him at a party recently organised in the state. Ibrahim said, "The shooting of the deceased was not intentional as people had it. He had already released a shot in the air to scare people but on coming down with the riffle, somebody from crowd mistakenly hit him at the shoulder and the bullet pulled out." He prayed for the repose of Emenike’s soul just as he implored God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the great loss. He said, “When I got wind of the incident at Isiala Mbano, I called the Commandant General, who quickly ordered that the suspect should be arrested. As I speak, he was immediately arrested and detained in the police cell”. He also said that the full weight of the law would prevail adding that the corps had issued the suspect a query, through in detention. “All security agencies will align with the Police and Corps to give a thorough investigation on the immediate and remote causes of the shooting of the deceased,” he added. https://www.punchng.com/nscdc-narrates-how-imo-senatorial-candidate-was-killed Oam4j Lalasticlala Mynd44 |

Former First Lady of Lagos State and lawmaker representing Lagos Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for the establishment of state police as a way of tackling the rising spate of insecurity in the country. Tinubu made the call during plenary on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday. She said, “If we really want to tackle our insecurity correctly, we should look at state police. I believe in you – Senate President – to do it this time. “I have seen what insecurity has meted out to Nigerians and the vulnerable group in particular women and children. “State policing: if we want to go there, we should allow states that are ready.” http://saharareporters.com/2020/01/29/tinubu%E2%80%99s-wife-senator-oluremi-advocates-state-police-over-rising-insecurity |
A civil society organization, the Societal Safety Network, SSN, has warned governors of the South-West states against endangering the lives of Yoruba people living in other parts of the country, with their resolve to operate a security outfit called Amotekun. The group at a world press conference in Abuja said though the increasing spate of insecurity was worrisome; launching a security outfit with the imprint of regional coloration does not augur well for a federal state like Nigeria. This is even as it called on the governors to devote a substantial part of their security votes to assist security agencies to tackle crime and criminality in the land. Addressing journalists on the matter, SSN Executive Director, Abdulrahman Agboola stressed the importance of collaborating with police formations, as against the constitution of new security outfits to combat all forms of criminality in the country. “We seriously frown against insecurity in Nigeria but to play politics with the security of the people is highly mischievous. Police stations and correctional centres in the South-West have many criminals and suspects of Yoruba descents, serving jail terms and those under trial for different heinous crimes, which is to state that criminals have no tribes or ethnicity. We fear that if Amotekun is misunderstood as targeting a particular ethnic group, this will expose Yorubas living in other parts of the country to dangers with predicted reprisal attacks as history recorded during past ethnic clashes. “The country does not currently operate a regional government and the declaration of a regional security outfit is an aberration that should not ordinarily attract stoppage of security votes by the federal government and except individual states begin to display proof of judicious usage of the security votes, the present circumstances could remain unabated,” Agboola said. Expressing fears of increasing security threats in the event that Amotekun is allowed to take off, Agboola had this to say: “During the hullabaloo on the Amotekun debacle, the South-East governors were charged by their kinsmen to follow the suit and prepare for a launch of similar platform while the North Central held a security summit and voices arose from the North West and North East demanding for the conveyance of similar security network in their geopolitical zones,” he said even as he called on Nigerians of all walks of life to do everything possible to make the country work. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/01/amotekun-think-of-yoruba-people-outside-your-domain-group-to-south-west-governors/ |

A study is looking into the coercive practice in Uganda, amid calls for the government to address the issue Jane’s* husband likes breast milk. “He says he likes the taste of it, and that it helps him in terms of his health. He feels good afterwards,” said the 20-year-old from Uganda, who has a six-month-old baby. Jane said her husband started asking for her milk the night she came home from the hospital after giving birth. “He said it was to help me with the milk flow. I felt it was OK.” Men drinking their partners’ breast milk is not uncommon in some areas of Uganda, and in parts of Tanzania and Kenya. It is now being linked to gender violence and coercive behaviour and there are concerns over the impact on babies’ nutrition. Little was known about the practice until Uganda’s minister of state for health, Sarah Opendi, broke the silence in parliament in 2018 and warned against “a growing culture of men demanding to suckle, which was becoming a problem for some breastfeeding mothers and their babies”. The reasons for the phenomenon, and its consequences, are now the subject of what is believed to be the first preliminary study into the practice, by Kyambogo University in Kampala and Britain’s University of Kent, supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund. “It was very much an exploratory mission. We didn’t know if we would find anybody willing to talk to us who admitted to doing it. We didn’t even really know if it was real or not,” said Dr Rowena Merritt, a British behavioural scientist who specialises in public health, and a lead researcher on the project. The study focused on the rural Buikwe district, in the central region, where the behaviour is reported to be common. Anonymised interviews were conducted with a group of four men who worked as “boda boda” motorcycle taxi drivers. “One said: ‘I know other men do it, but we’ve never talked about it.’ So that to me would suggest that it is a common behaviour, but it isn’t socially accepted,” said Merritt. The preliminary research suggested that men often drink before the child is fed, usually once a day, sometimes more frequently, and for about an hour at a time. The men said they found it energising. “It sustains me, I come home for lunch and it relieves stress in the middle of the working day,” said Thomas*. “There is a belief in some communities that breast milk has energising and curative powers, even curing diseases such as HIV and Aids and cancer,” said Dr Peter Rukundo, a senior lecturer at Kyambogo University who assisted with the research. The men also said it was a way of initiating sex and showing affection. “But then it is happening to women who have just given birth,” he added. One man told the researchers: “When breastfeeding, I feel like I’m being looked after like a child, and this becomes addictive. I feel like a prince.” Women did not seem to have much choice in the matter. “It appears to be a hugely coerced behaviour from the people we spoke to,” added Merritt. When asked what might happen if she said no, one woman replied: “I fear that my husband might go elsewhere if I wouldn’t let it happen.” Thomas admitted that resistance could result in the women being beaten. “She can’t say no because you become obsessed, it’s hard to stop. If women say no it can cause violence, it’s a big issue,” he said. The behaviour has been linked to gender-based violence in the Karamoja region in north-east Uganda. “The principal nutritionist has claimed that it is a common practice there in the form of violence, that when the men get drunk some went for the breasts forcefully,” said Rukundo. Health professionals, including midwives and nutritionists, told researchers about cases where babies had to be given formula milk because partners wanted the breast milk, and where women came to clinic with infected or bitten nipples caused by a man suckling. There are also risks to babies of cross-infection from the man’s saliva. “There is a gap in public awareness of the risks in such practices. But the challenge is we don’t have the evidence of the magnitude of this behaviour. We need a survey on prevalence,” said Rukundo. He also called on government and development partners to work together to mitigate harm. “We don’t have any clear message or deliberate effort, despite the health minister saying the issue is there. So, in a way, it is denial. If they remain silent, the issue will remain underground,” he said. Merritt added: “The fear for me, is the longer that this continues it will become part of the culture and tradition for the next generation. I see parallels with FGM." *names have been changed https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/jan/28/she-cant-say-no-the-men-who-take-breast-milk-from-babies Lalasticlala |

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are reportedly held hostage inside a public secondary school in Essien Udim, Akwa Ibom, in the ongoing rerun elections in the state, the electoral body has told PREMIUM TIMES. The school – Independent High School, Ukana – is the location for polling unit 9 in Ukana West Ward 2, Essien Udim. Godswill Akpabio, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, is from the ward. “In Independent High School, Ukana, poll officials have been taken in, we learnt that there are persons who are either they are fake or real DSS officers and soldiers. The poll officials, their phones have been taken away from them, we can’t reach them and an insider has sent a message to us that what they are doing there they are thumb-printing, they don’t allow the use of card reader in the place,” the INEC official said at about 12:20 p.m. on Saturday. The official said voting materials for the ward were “hijacked” since 6 a.m. or thereabout. “There are some disruption going on there, despite all that we have said that we must change the image of what we are doing. This is only one local government area,” he said. INEC spokesperson in Akwa Ibom, Don Etukudoh, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES. “They are still being held hostage right now,” Mr Etukudoh said at 1:52 p.m. Earlier in the day, thugs, assisted by the notorious State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian police, prevented some journalists from entering the Independent High School, Ukana, until the intervention of the police spokesperson in the state, Nnudam Fredrick. The journalists, including officials of Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state, later left the school premises to other polling units in the local government area. Mr Akpabio’s spokesperson, Anietie Ekong, in an apparent response to the reports coming out from Essien Udim, said the public should “ignore infantile propaganda linking Senator Akpabio to anything that is going on in Essien Udim LGA in the name of rerun elections”. “We have gathered that some PDP-sponsored thugs were planning to carry out a sinister plot during the rerun elections and link it to Senator Akpabio. “Security agencies should be on the watch out for miscreants and sponsored thugs, apprehend them and visit the full weight of the law on them,” Mr Ekong said in a Facebook post, Saturday afternoon. Mr Ekong said the minister has been in his house in Uyo, and not in Essien Udim, since Saturday morning. Mr Akpabio lost his bid to return to the Senate for a second term in 2019 when INEC declared Chris Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party winner of the poll. Amid complaints of election fraud and a petition to the tribunal, the former Senate minority leader who was later appointed minister, said he was no longer interested in a repeat poll, but INEC rejected a replacement of candidate. The electoral body is also conducting reruns for the state and federal constituencies in the area. Both Nse Ntuen, the APC candidates for the Essien Udim State Constituency, and Emmanuel Akpan, the APC candidate for the Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency on Friday announced their withdrawal from the elections. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/374312-akwa-ibom-election-inec-officials-held-hostage-in-ministers-ward-commission.html |
Some passengers came under gun attack around Rigasa train station in Kaduna state on Friday. A security source told TheCable that the incident happened shortly after travellers from the nation’s capital arrived in Kaduna. The source said the passengers were making plans to connect various destinations within the state when the gunmen struck. “When the 6:30pm train from Abuja arrived Kaduna around 8pm, the passengers disembarked. Some of them proceeded to their destinations but those who tried to connect the town through the Rigasa-Airport road came under gunfire from suspected bandits,” the source said. He added that some motorists abandoned their vehicles by the roadside during the attack. TheCable could not independently verify if some persons were kidnapped in the incident which happened a week after Umaru Bubaram, emir of Potiskum in Yobe, was attacked in Kaduna. The first-class monarch lost at least four of his aides in the attack. The Ansaru militant group later claimed responsibility. Speaking on the latest attack, a resident told TheCable that the gunmen fled following the prompt response of security personnel. “There was an attempted attack on passengers around the Rigassa train station but it was repelled by the army, I don’t have the details,” the resident said. Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security and home affairs, neither answered calls nor responded to a text message seeking his comment on the incident. But Yakubu Sabo, spokesman of the Kaduna police command, said he was not aware of the attack. He, however. promised to find out and get back but had not done so at the time of this report. Kaduna is one of the states in the country with the highest rate of insecurity. The fear of kidnappers and bandits made many residents to abandon the Abuja-Kaduna highway. Many people feel safe boarding trains whenever they are travelling. https://www.thecable.ng/gunmen-open-fire-on-travellers-around-kaduna-train-station/amp |

Russian stand-up comedian Aleksandr Dolgopolov has fled Russia fearing for his safety after learning police had started investigating videos taken at his performances in different clubs. Dolgopolov’s lawyer Leonid Solovyov and his concert director Armen Gandilyan confirmed with Current Time on January 23 that the comedian had decided to leave his homeland, though they did not say where. Police officials in Moscow said a day earlier that Dolgopolov's performances caught the eye of law enforcement after an unidentified resident of the city of Orekhovo-Zuyevo near Moscow had filed a complaint against the comedian, accusing him of "insulting the feelings of believers" in God. No details were given on what exactly in Dolgopolov’s act offended the man. Dolgopolov told Current Time on January 22 that he had to cancel a performance in a Moscow bar after he learned that a man in civilian clothes asked the bar's managers whether the comedian was already inside the establishment. The comedian added that after he was informed about the man, he and his team decided to leave the bar immediately. He later left the country. "I just speak, tell jokes, I didn’t plan to be persecuted for just joking," he said. Dolgopolov wrote on Instagram that Moscow police had sent a formal letter to the HopHead standup club in St. Petersburg, asking to confirm if it was the venue for Dolgopolov's performance called An Hour of Jokes in February 2019. In the show, Dolgopolov tells expletive-laden jokes about a Slavic name -- Bogdan (which translates from Russian to God given) -- and why Mary chose the name Jesus for her child. He also mocks his childhood religious beliefs and the church in general. Dolgopolov also takes shots at President Vladimir Putin in some of his shows. "If Putin issues a decree, ordering all Russians to jump into lava, they will say: 'Oh, God, where will we find lava, we don't have it in our yard. What shall we do, our wise chief?" Dolgopolov jokes in the performance in question. https://www.rferl.org/amp/russian-stand-up-comedian-who-joked-about-church-putin-flees-country/30393234.html?__twitter_impression=true
