Residents flee as herdsmen invade Benue communities, plan permanent settlement

Residents of four wards namely, Yonov, Tomboe, Turan and Nenzev, in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, have fled their communities over the influx of Fulani herdsmen into the area.

Joseph Anawah, a community leader and former media aide to an ex-governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam, raised the alarm on Tuesday.

He said some communities in the four wards had been invaded by herders with more than 1,000 cows.

The invasion, according to Anawah, is posing a serious threat to neighbouring communities in the Buruku and Guma local government areas.

Anawah said the herders crossed the River Benue and settled at the Tse Azaye, Tse Agah, Tse Getim and Tse Iosun communities in the Tombo ward.

He added that the herders later migrated through Akwana in the neighbouring Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State and moved through Kurungu village to the Tombo ward from where they proceeded straight to Tse June in the Turan ward in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

He stated, “On February 20, 2022, around 8pm, herdsmen arrived at Tse Ikyegh in the Yonov council ward of the Logo LGA with over 1,000 cows and settled beside the Logo stream.

“They migrated from the Tombo council ward in Logo and proceeded straight to the Yonov community in the interior part of the Ugondo geopolitical axis after causing a lot of destruction to cassava farms and seed yams in the Tombo and Turan council wards.

“They are so hostile and do not want anybody to come close to them. The residents, on sighting the arrival of cows, started packing out of their villages for the fear of the unknown.

“When the kindred Head of the Mbaifu community, Gbamga Nengem, visited their settlement to know their mission in his community, they told him clearly that they had come for settlement and any attempt to evict them, either by the host community or government agencies, would invoke their anger and they would be left with no option but to resort to physical and open confrontation.”

Anawah called on the government and security operatives in the state to help beef up security in the Logo council area to avert a crisis.

When contacted, the Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Benue State chapter, Ibrahim Galma, who claimed to be in Abuja, asked for time to confirm the report and promised to call back.

But as of the time of filing this report, Galma had yet to call back as promised and refused to take further calls made to his mobile telephone.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Benson Abounu, said he had yet to receive a report from the Logo Local Government Area over the alleged influx of herdsmen and their cattle.

“I have yet to receive any report to that effect; I will try and find out tomorrow (today),” he stated.

Assailants have attacked a Total filling station around Delabo Junction, Ilisan-Remo in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State and
reportedly slaughtered two guards.

Our correspondent gathered that the guards were attached to the filling station when the incident happened on Sunday night.

Residents of the area on Monday morning woke up to discover the corpses of the victims in the pool of their own blood.

One of the residents who pleaded anonymity said the assailants took nothing away from the filling station, a development that raised suspicion that the incident might be a case of assassination.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

TENSION has again enveloped the Uwheru Kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, following the invasion of the community’s farmland by ravaging Fulani herdsmen.

This came, as a suspected herder was apprehended by indigenes in a bush in the kingdom and handed over to the police in the Ughelli A division.

Recall that the community sometimes ago came under serious attack by the herdsmen, which led to the loss of lives of indigenes of the community.

The Kingdom in the aftermath of the attacks stopped the consumption of cow meat in the area.

Addressing newsmen on the ordeal of his people, President General of the kingdom, Chief Macpherson Egbedi, said the suspect and other fleeing herders were found destroying their farmlands on Thursday.

He said: “If you can remember when they came last year, they killed 10 people and mass burial was done for them; everyone was aware of it, even the state government was aware and they said they will not come again.

“This time they have come and started the same way of destroying our crops again, killing people and raping women in the bush.

“We want the government to come to our rescue because there is nothing we can do, they came with their guns and mercenary, there is nothing we can do, we cannot fight, we don’t have the power to fight them.

“Even the one we caught, we brought him as evidence for the government to know that they are already in the bush trying to do the same way they have been destroying crop and killing our people.

“We caught this one with the effort of the entire community and any moment they will overpower everybody and the same destruction take place and starvation. There will be no food, nothing they will do, all the women will stop going to farm, we want the government to come to our aid.

“When they came yesterday (Thursday) they came with over 30,000 cows and you can imagine when 30,0000 cows pass through your farmlands, you will know what they have destroyed.

“They have been coming in batches since last week, they entered through Patani, through our main town here and they have occupied all our bush in Uwheru community.

“We have notified the government about it, the DPO Ughelli A Division is aware, Ughelli Area Commander is aware that Fulani herdsmen have entered our bush again.”

On his part, Secretary Uwheru Traditional Council, Chief Benjamin Ohworeko, said: “Fulani herdsmen issue is a yearly ritual, they come annually and they are here once more.

At the time of filing this report, residents of Port-Avwon, a village in the Uwheru kingdom, were seen fleeing the community over the fear of herdsmen attack.

Contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO in the State Command, Mr Bright Edafe, said no Fulani man was arrested.

He said: “The community reported that they had issues with some herders. During the fracas, the Fulani people ran away abandoning a child.

“They took the child to the police station. On interrogating the child, it was discovered that he was not Fulani but the Ijaw person and they have located the parents of the child and the child was released to them.”

DAILY POST gathered that the Fulani herdsmen and some Ohori farmers had engaged one another in a clash at Idofa village, leading to loss of lives and properties worth millions of Naira.

It was learnt that the people of Aworo community in Yewa North Local Government had chased the herdsmen from their village to Idofa in Imeko, killing three of them and their cows.


Aworo people had accused the Fulani of destroying their farms and water sources through open grazing of cows, a practice the Ogun State Government had banned.

A community leader, who did not want to be mentioned, told our correspondent that after the Aworo people killed the three herdsmen in Idofa, there was a reprisal attack on Thursday, leading to the death of two Yorubas, one of whom was burnt beyond recognition.

Houses, four maize barns, motorcycles and other valuables were reportedly set ablaze by the attackers.

“The Aworo people chased the herdsmen from Yewa North to Idofa in Imeko. They killed three of them there and killed their cows.

“As we are talking, many Ohoris are injured, hundreds are now displaced at Imeko town. We need the attention of the Federal and the State Governments to take care of the displaced persons,” the community leader explained.

As of Friday, our correspondent learnt that many residents of the village had fled for fear of being killed.
Contacted, the Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Samson Odedina said he would get back to our correspondent. However, he is yet to do so hours before filing this report.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident on Saturday, assuring that those behind the it would be apprehended.

“We heard about it. It is an unfortunate incident and we are investigating it. We have called on all stakeholders, including the Fulani communities that have been living in that place, who testified that they did not even know the reason for the attack.

“We are investigating to ensure that those who carried out that dastardly act are apprehended in other not to cause further crisis.

“The situation is under control as more policemen have been deployed to the place. The Commissioner of Police have directed that the Area Commander should take charge of the security situation in the area.

“No arrest have been made yet, but we are on it and we are sure that those who committed that act will be apprehended,” Oyeyemi said.
