Nigeria was lucky to win as the Ivory Coast had 2 clear shots to win this game at the end.

A win is better than a loss though, and we should go ahead and win this group now, as Ivory Coast is probably the toughest opposition here.

It will be tough to see the team get past the Semi finals though. I'm not sure this team can get past Senegal, Angola or Tunisia.

Really sad, because ego and politics from people that eat from the game and give little back have ruined a great opportunity for us to consolidate on 2015.

Normally, not more than 3 players from this team should be part of a final 12 for Nigeria. I wish us the best though.

I hope I'm wrong, but it will be difficult for th eteam we have out there to get past the Semis.

Tunisia prepare to co-host the African Championship on the back of a successful preparation in Europe, which saw the North Africans go up against France, Spain, Belgium, Romania and Portugal before returning home to defeat all four FIBA AfroBasket 2017 bound teams, including the DR Congo, Mali, Egypt and the Central African Republic.

Although point guard Xane D'Almeida has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury, the Senegalese have gone from strength to strength throughout their preparations. A comprehensive win over Mali last week translated Senegal's grip ahead of co-hosting the FIBA AfroBasket 2017.

It has taken Nigeria a couple of weeks to build a team to defend their African crown. Without facing a national team during the preparations, and heading to Tunisia with only one player from 2015 (Ike Diogu), the Nigerians are very well equipped on the frontcourt with Washington Wizards big man Daniel Ochefu and seven-footer Deji Akindele. They might not have trouble protecting the painted area.

The Congolese have shown tremendous consistency throughout their warm-up games in Tunisia. A loss to hosts Tunisia was followed by wins over the Central African Republic, local clubs Etoile Sportive du Rades and Etoile Sportive du Sahel.

+2 Losing to Tunisia 80-66 over the weekend hasn't reflected Egypt's pedigree.

Nwolokor, Uzoho, Femi Thomas, Ezenwa and Alampasu should be the 5 keepers tested to fight for the slots if Ikeme and Enyeama are not available.

Thomas has been the best keeper in Nigeria over the last 5 years. He followed Khadiri Ikhana to Kano pillars and has been out of the loop since Ikhana left pillars. He was also ahead of Ezenwa in the U-20's and has had a better career domestically (mostly with Enyimba until he followed his coach to Pillars, which did not work out).

Uzoho and Nwolokor are young keepers in Europe, who have made better progress than Alampasu.

Ezenwa is good but I won't lie to you... He is not world class material. But yes he is good and one of the very best (if not the very best) we have in the local scene.
And hey guess what? I rate the uncapped Alampasu ahead of Ezenwa. I believe Alampasu will be a long term mainstay in the Super Eagles with time and if and when he gets the chance to man goal... I believe Rohr will find it difficult ignoring Alampasu for long too.... and we will have another strong headache in Goalies selection...


Meanwhile, Vincent is on his way back... more recently updated clips from his twitter account shows he has made remarkable recovery from his right knee injury... he is still involved in Light one-on-one training with a Goalie coach and Physio too... but eventually, Enyeama will make a comeback but first he needs to find a club and get his match fitness levels up.




Finally Carl... all I can say is keep praying for Carl. Right now he stands no chance of making it before the mundial... a miracle is possible but as things stand.. nope... no miracles in sight. Carl is out of the picture for now... he has to fully concentrate on his therapies and steps to recovery from this cancer before he can settle down and know if he can return to the Beautiful game or not coz his condition is really serious.... but I am optimistic he will recover and live a little longer. But to return to Football? That is kinda hanging... so just #prayforCarl

Mozambique or Senegal, what opponent would you prefer? Mozambique doing it early on though, 11-6.

I think we are better than both, but Senegal will be tougher.

We might as well go up against tough competition to prepare us for the World Championship even though it is still over a year away.

Good to get over the hump of beating the hosts.

We need to be more clinical though and have a ruthless mindset.

Nigeria generally struggles against home teams in both football and basketball, even when we obviously have a better team.

I somehow wish I could have passed this on to the coach before our game vs Senegal. We could have taken an easy path to the finals (vs Mozambique) and qualification for the World Championships.

Mali will be tough, but I believe we will beat them well. I always prefer us to avoid the hosts though. Even our men lost to Tunisia in 2015 and our women lost to Cameroon in 2015 as well

Mozambique is trashing Angola. That is the 4th team from our group knocking out the 1st team from the other group.

Mali vs Egypt might just be a lot more competitive than we thought.

I'm more worried about the male team. No preliminary squad yet, no planned friendly matches and a new coach with just about 17 days to the tourney. For God sake,what have they been doing? Is this how we planned to defend the title?

We have enough talent to win even with little preparation, but the main problem as always is that the administration is a mess.

There are two rival federations that were elected in separate elections. Two people are laying claim to the Chairmanship position (Tijani Umar and Musa Kida) and the world body has given Nigeria till November to get its house in order or risk a ban.

The Kida faction will probably win because the sports minister is backing them. The Tijani Umar faction appointed the former coach and asked him to continue for Afrobasket. The Kida faction appointed a new coach.

Most of the players that were in the Olympics will be loyal to Voight, but to be honest, we have a lot of Nigeria eligible players who are not in the mix that can put together to make a run at the title. Hopefully some good things are happening behind the scenes but you never know with Nigeria.

It is a disgrace that we missed the last Olympics and we should have been dominating African basketball for the last 2 decades with the talent we've had on both the men & women's side.

As always, it is not the best squad we can put out, but we are good enough to comfortably win the tournament with this squad.

If we can sort out admin and financing, we are a top 3-5 side in the world and should contend for a medal at every global tournament.

The Ogwumike sisters alone can do that. At least 3 of our girls were drafted in the WNBA this year. One of them was meant to come & join up with the squad, but I don't know if she did.

Glad the Mfon Udoka is back in the mix. She played in the WNBA and was captain of Nigeria for over a decade. All the girls look up to her.

Also, the run of the very young 1st Deepwater team in this year's league shows that there is something good happening on the home front as well.
