Politics / DSS Arrests Ex-nsa Dasuki In Abuja by laidian(m): 7:28am On Jul 17, 2015
Operatives of the Directorate of State Service (DSS) yesterday night arrested former national security adviser (NSA), Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) in his private residence at Asokoro, Abuja.

LEADERSHIP Friday learnt that the operatives in four Hilux vans, led by one Mohammed, stormed the Asokoro residence of the former NSA at about 6:40pm and laid siege on the residence,
insisting on seeing Dasuki.

According to sources, military operatives guarding the home prevented the DSS operatives from gaining entry into the premises which prompted the latter to threaten to force their way into the house.

LEADERSHIP Friday also gathered that a similar scenario played out in Sokoto, in the home owned by the former NSA’s father, Ibrahim Dasuki, a former Sultan of Sokoto, where some other DSS operatives also stormed the home apparently in search of the retired colonel.

The operatives who visited the Dasukis’ Sokoto home were said to have searched the property, including a large container that had been in the compound for many years. They were said to have locked in all occupants of the house and would not allow anyone in or out of the building.

LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the invasion of the erstwhile NSA’s home may not be unconnected with media reports of a planned probe of the defence budget and other alleged abuses of office by the immediate-past service chiefs who were relieved of their duties this week.

The DSS operatives later in the night whisked away the former NSA to one of their facilities in Abuja for interrogation.

A security source last night confirmed the arrest of Dasuki to LEADERSHIP Friday. As at press time, no reason was given for the
former NSA’s arrest.

Every attempt to get the DSS to react to the incident failed as LEADERSHIP Friday learnt that former spokesman of the service, Marilyn Ogar, had been removed as spokesman, and no replacement has been announced.

Family / Home Politics: Sure-fire Marriage Destroyers To Avoid by laidian(m): 4:05pm On Jul 14, 2015
You have heard that money issue, infidelity crisis and incompatibility brouhaha are the major causes of marriage failures. But there are other silent killers of marriage that need to be taken care of to ensure that marriage does not go stale or suffocate.
1. Inability to apologise
In the past, the assumption used to be that inability to apologise when wrong was a male problem. That was an era when it was truly a man’s world. Marriage was treated as a relationship between a master and a servant. But modernity has changed everything. Today, women are competing with men over who should take the trophy on the inability to say: “I’m sorry”.
The inability to apologise or make amends is a big problem that weakens marriage gradually. The people who have this serious problem think that it diminishes them to apologise. Most times, they are also the people that believe that they can say or do anything that pleases them. Ironically, they love to receive apologies with a passion. They love to find others guilty by all means. Yet, they hate to apologise. Rather than apologise verbally, they would prefer to apologise in their hearts or get generous or become playful and friendly. But that may work the first or second time. But when it becomes a trend, it becomes irritating.
Apologising does not demean or belittle the person who does it. On the contrary, it elevates the person. It soothes the person that has been hurt. It shows you have respect for the person you have hurt, especially if the person usually apologises to you when he or she hurts you. It shows you care for the person’s feelings. The person naturally loves you the more.
2. Verbal abuse
Marriage is not a contest of who wins and who loses. Both either lose or win. Using scathing words against each other during misunderstandings is senseless. It is even worse when one says nasty things about one’s father-in-law or mother-in-law just to get at one’s spouse.
The truth is that if you call your spouse horrible names when you are angry, even after you have apologised, you cannot wipe off the words. If you say to your spouse: “I have never seen a more wicked/stupid/selfish person than you,” do you expect it to be seen as just a joke? Your spouse may forgive but may not forget. Such words leave a scar in the psyche. Your spouse starts believing that the love you profess is false. A rift develops between you two. Little matters are accentuated. The gap between you widens.
Remember that the same “useless man” runs a company successfully and is the leader of many societies. The same woman that has “tissue paper for brain” leads other women and men in her office and other societies.
Buy a sheath for your tongue or sew up your mouth if it is only venom that jumps out of it.
3. Disrespect
It is better to respect your spouse than to love your spouse. When a wife insults her husband at will because she knows he cannot beat her, she is destroying her marriage. The man who shouts at his wife or belittles her before other people is making a fool of himself and destroying his marriage.
Think of all those you hold highly either in the office or within your social circle: when they do things you don’t like, do you shout at them in public or call them aside and talk to them in a respectable tone and manner? So why treat your spouse differently?
You can never claim to love someone you do not respect. So if you don’t treat your spouse with respect and dignity, stop deceiving yourself that you love him or her.
4. Taking each other for granted
You see your spouse every day. You make love as often as possible. Nothing is novel anymore. So you unconsciously start to take your spouse for granted. When others do little things for you, you thank them. You compliment others for their clothes or shoes. You smile at others, play with them, treat them with courtesy and dignity. But not so when your spouse is concerned. You only see the faults and never the good sides. You raise your voice always. You fly into a rage at every word or action. Every discussion becomes a quarrel.
You are simply killing the joy in your marriage. And when a marriage loses its joy, it seizes to be a marriage but a prison.
5. Nagging
Once “nagging” is mentioned, women come to mind. But all that has changed with modernity.
Why do people nag? People nag when they cannot do anything else over an action that is repeated annoyingly. If the person can punish the culprit, there will be no need for nagging. Imagine a woman having a heart-to-heart discussion with her husband over hanging out in bars at night. He promises to stop. A week after, he is back to the bar, not caring what happens. She feels frustrated and helpless. She can’t beat the husband or lock him up in a room. So she complains and it is called nagging.
If a person continuously takes actions that hurt the partner or the marriage or endangers the family, rather than complain about nagging, the person should take a second look at that matter and see what can be done to stop it.
It is a different ball game when a spouse tries to change the other. A person who hates fish hates fish. You can’t force or preach the person into liking fish. If your spouse likes to sing in the shower, let them be. If you hate the sound, move away to the sitting room or kitchen.
6. Sexual frustration
Sex is a two-way thing. Once it is made a one-way affair, it becomes rape or masturbation. A married person should be concerned more about satisfying the spouse than oneself. When it comes to sex in marriage, it should be spouse before self. It is like two hands washing each other. The left hand is concerned about washing the right hand while the right hand is concerned about washing the left hand. In that selfless process, they both become very clean.
But when a partner thinks of only self, it leads to frustration and anger. It creates a gulf.
Also, when sex is used as a negotiating tool in marriage, it becomes a brothel relationship, which also suffocates marriage.
7. Arrogance and stubbornness
If your spouse cannot get you to change your mind through discussion or pleading, then you should have remained single. If you do only things you want, then you made a mistake by getting married.
Your spouse is different from every other person on earth, and should be “specially special” too. If your spouse does not like an outfit you are wearing, but you insist on wearing that outfit, then the message you are passing across is that you are cheating on your spouse: there is obviously someone else you are dressing to please. Once your spouse complains about anything you are wearing, there should be no argument from you: just take it off. The only excuse is if your spouse wants you to go about half-naked and it runs against your principles. Then
you need to have a discussion with him or her. When you make your spouse see that he or she cannot get you to change your mind on any issue, what you have said is that there is nothing special about your spouse. It is even worse if you will never budge when your spouse talks to you on an issue, but will budge when another person talks to you on the same issue. The message gets into the psyche of your spouse and a gulf begins to develop.

Politics / President Orders Police To Vacate Rivers Local Govts by laidian(m): 5:08am On Jul 13, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Police and other security agencies to comply with the court’ s order sacking local government chairmen in Rivers State until the Court of Appeal rules otherwise .

The police yesterday withdrew from the secretariats of the local governments in deference to the presidential directive .

It was learnt that Buhari gave the order to demonstrate his commitment to the Rule of Law contrary to the insinuations in some quarters , especially by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) .

According to the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari has made it clear that he won ’ t stop the execution of a court judgment. Shehu, who spoke with our correspondent , said : “ It is very clear from the view of the President that the judgment on the sack of the local government chairmen in Rivers State must be respected .

“ The President made it clear that he cannot stop the judgment unless it is set aside by the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court.

“ In fact, the President has asked the police and security agencies why they did not enforce the court order . They said they were only at the local government secretariats to secure these public institutions because they had information that there might be backlash .

“ So, there was no question of impunity by the President in Rivers State. The attack against the President was unfair by those behind it. ”

Replying a question , Shehu said: “ Actually , the police have withdrawn from the local governments. ”

But the APC governorship candidate in the state , Dr. Dakuku Peterside, yesterday condemned an alleged impunity by Governor Nyesom Wike .

Peterside, in a statement in Abuja, said apart from the questionable borrowing of N30 billion , Wike was wrong to have dissolved state institutions created with tenured security .

He said: “ I had hoped that this government would take a cue from the Buhari administration but it is becoming obvious by the day that the Wike government does not intend to tow the path of honour and statesmanship and therefore does not deserve the trust of Rivers people .

“ On our path , we are duty -bound to protect our state and the interest of all our people and those who reside here. It is that call of duty and with the highest sense of responsibility that has compelled me to speak up.

“ Let us with continuing , unwavering faith in the True God and confidence in our judicial institutions, trust that we shall soon see the end of this era of impunity, directionlessness and crass disregard for the rights of our people and the constitution of our nation. Regardless of the darkness that has enveloped our state , we know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we vow to leave no stone unturned until our people have reached their well - deserved Eldorado. ”

Peterside queried the alleged high- handedness of the
administration of Wike and why N 30 billion was borrowed
by the state in 30 days.

Peterside added: “ Six weeks after assuming office, the government has not made one single policy statement, rather it appointed the Nimi Walson Jack committee to design a blueprint for the running of government after it had taken off . A move that suggests we have the case of a rudderless state manned by persons whose only bond to the state is to siphon away our resources.

“ The mindless pursuit of vendetta against individuals, chasing of shadows and brazen impunity against the long - term interest of the state .

“ Obvious lack of commitment to the development of Rivers State . A case in point is the security situation, which has continued to deteriorate with criminality promoted at the expense of the safety of our people . Kidnapping and armed robbery are now rooted and government is doing nothing.

“ Poor understanding of public finance and questionable management of public funds as is evidenced in the borrowing of N 30 bn in 30 days .

“ Elevation of impunity to a new level and crass manipulation of institutions as exemplified by the needless local government council crises being orchestrated by the government .

“ Illegal dissolution of state institutions created by the constitution with tenured security . Ready examples include the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission , Local Government Service Commission , Civil Service Commission and the Rivers State House of Assembly Commission. ”

Politics / Federal Government Colleges Of Extortion, Impunity by laidian(m): 5:20am On Jul 10, 2015
They have not only turned the Parents-Teachers
Associations (PTAs) of their schools to illegal parastatals through which they heartlessly extort money from financially weary parents. The rot dogging Federal Government Colleges (FGCs), some say nationwide, is fast spreading to include reckless management of the schools; as well as bare-faced immoral relationships between students and very senior teachers. One of such liaison, reports say, has resulted in the impregnation of a girl
that just finished Senior Secondary School (SSS) III. Reports had earlier identified PTAs among the most corrupt of the lucrative industries thriving in FGCs. From the N500 or a little more charged per term a couple of years ago, the least PTA bill these days is between N10,000 and N25,000 per term of less than three months. In the Lagos area, for example, Kings College charges N17,500 per day student per term; and N21,500 for boarders, broken down as building levy, PTA dues, barbing levy and laundry levies. But parents are compelled to buy toiletries, including laundering soaps,
for their wards; and the students return home with rough and bushy hair during each vacation.

It is worse in Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba, where parents are forced to cough up N15,000 per term as PTA. It is worse because FSTC’s leadership placed the compulsory collection of the PTA bill above the academic pursuit of students. Early into the present term, for instance, the school’s authority
allegedly sent text messages to all members of its PTA executive to ensure that no student with incomplete PTA bill was checked in; even if affected parents managed to pay the tuition and other bills. It is also one school where parents were, in the past, forced to buy a specified number of bags of cement before their wards could be
checked into the boarding house. The spurious excuse most of them give for the heartless extortion is that the PTA agreed on the bills at its meetings, whereas the entire members of executive of PTAs are either drawn from the schools or cronies of their leadership; with the school heads as clearing houses and Enforcers-in-Chief of the arbitrary bills.

They also claim that because of shortfalls in fund allocation from the FG, they use PTA funds to build classroom blocks and hostels, as well as hire additional teachers to beef up staff strength. Of what assistance, then, is the FG to parents if it cannot sustain FGCs?
Worse still, why has the government shut its eyes to the criminal exploitation of parents by the school heads purportedly to plug infrastructure deficits? Indeed, some angry parents that protested the decrepit state of infrastructure in Kings College lately said the school’s PTA was not discharging its duties; and no PTA meeting had
been convened this session, even when the third term is almost over. Students at the annex and main complex of the school do not have water to drink even at their dining halls. But the school management which produces KC sachet and bottled water commercialized the products; and exploit the students to buy instead of providing free water for them. What a nation and its
depraved educational system! But the virtual robbery has persisted ostensibly because of the complicity and ineptitude of the Federal Ministry of Education and its officials, who have chosen to bury their heads in the sand like an ostrich, while the sordid happenings fester.

About the middle of last month, an online medium, ‘New Mail’ reported how the management of FSTC Yaba ordered all final year students writing their NECO examinations at the time to leave the school hostel allegedly over the unruly behaviour of some of them. It never occurred to the school’s authorities that a lot of the students reside in states other than Lagos; and that they would be stranded. Countless bills paid for keeping the students in school, including accommodation and feeding charges, were discountenanced, without any hint on how the school intended to effect refunds. What an abrasive, high-handed and incompetent approach to minor crisis management, when all that was required under the circumstance was to isolate the deviants from the crowd for requisite censure or punishment; and communicating same to their parents? And if, like the Principal, Chris Ugorji, claimed, the students did whatever they liked; didn’t read anymore; or boasted that they were no more FSTC Yaba students but NECO candidates,
who are to blame for such level of indiscipline? Parents alone; or the innocent students sent away from hostel?

As you are reading this, another report says the Principal of FGC, Jos, allegedly impregnated a 17-year-old SSS 3 girl he had been dating when she was 15 years of age. In obvious desperation to cover the shame, he was said to have indicated interest in marrying the girl. How else can it be proven that many of those to whom Nigerians entrusted the upright nurturing of their children have themselves lost their bearings and are, indeed, harbingers of moral decay, graft and anarchy?

Politics / PMB Rejects Purchase Of N400m Bulletproof Cars by laidian(m): 4:48am On Jul 10, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has turned down a proposal to purchase five new bulletproof Mercedes S-600 (V222) cars for his use at a cost of about N400 million.

Buhari was said to have rejected the proposal by the permanent secretary of the State House, Mr. Nebolisa Emodi when he briefed him ( the president) on Wednesday.

Ordering that the proposal to procure the cars be dropped, Buhari noted that there was no need for the new vehicles when the ones he inherited from former President Goodluck Jonathan are still in good shape for him to use.

A top presidency source who disclosed this to State House correspondents last night said the president, however, welcomed
other initiatives presented by Emodi to reduce the operating cost of the State House and strengthen its finance and accounts internal control mechanisms.

The source at the briefing, who spoke on condition of anonymity, quoted Buhari as telling the permanent secretary: “I don’t need any new cars. The ones I’m using now are just fine.

“Greater effort be made henceforth to capture all State House expenses within the approved national budget, to avoid the
frequent recourse by past administrations to presidential intervention funds.”

It was gathered that the proposal to procure the new cars was first made to Jonathan before he left office.

“The former president directed, however, that it be represented to President Buhari for approval on his assumption of office since the cars could only be delivered some months after the May 29, 2015
handover date,” another source told our correspondent.

Confirming the development, senior special assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said the
president’s decision was in keeping with his commitment to prudence in the management of national resources.

He added that Buhari wanted to continue using the cars he inherited from Jonathan, which explains why he withheld approval
for their replacement.
