Politics / Boko Haram Explosion Victim Baby Aishat Gets Reconstructive Surgery by laidian(m): 4:57am On Dec 21, 2015
Local and international plastic surgeons have carried out a successful reconstructive surgery on Baby Aishat Ibrahim, the victim of a Boko Haram bomb explosion, whose predicament caught the attention of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, during a visit to Borno State on July 1.

Speaking with reporters yesterday at the National Hospital, Abuja, after the Vice President paid an unscheduled visit to check on the recovery status of the baby who was operated upon on Saturday, Prof. Ferdinand Ofodile, the US-based surgeon who led the four-hour surgery, said the operation was successful.

Ofodile said: “We reconstructed her eyelids by adding flesh from the thigh, and we also did a skin graft to the left arm, freeing it, from its attachment at the armpit caused by the explosion.”

He said Aishat, who is now 14 months old, sustained extensive burns to the eye, the face and the chest. She also sustained injuries in the left arm and armpit “resulting in the arm being fixed to the body and eyelids destroyed.”

Ofodile, who is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine from the top-rated Columbia University, New York, said it would take about six months for Aishat’s full recovery, but explained that if the eyelids were not reconstructed it could cause the outright loss of the eyes.

“When I saw her on Friday, the upper lid was turned inside out. If this was not fixed, over time the eye itself would be lost due to unprotected exposure. So we saved the eyelids and globe by adding skin to the eye lids-upper and lower,” said Ofodile who led two other surgeons, Dr. Chubado Tahir from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where the Vice President met the baby for the first time in July and Dr. Cefas Nbaya of the National Hospital, Abuja.

The US-based surgeon  saidthe team “released the armpit so Aishat can lift up her left arm and recover the full use of her shoulder”.

He said further surgical operations would be done in the future to improve the baby’s conditions.

Aishat’s parents, Mr.  and Mrs. Ibrahim Goni Lawani, who also spoke with the reporters yesterday thanked  Osinbajo who paid the cost of the operation.

Lawani said of the many victims of Boko Haram, his family is privileged that “God touched the Vice President to help our child. We thank President Buhari and the VP, may God bless them and make them remained focussed on why God brought them to power.”

According to Aishat’s mother, Mariam, “we are happy and relieved, the surgery went well.”

Politics / Should Buhari Probe The Jonathan Administration Or Not? by laidian(m): 6:59am On Aug 12, 2015
MY unequivocal answer to the question of whether President
Muhammadu Buhari should investigate the Goodluck Jonathan
administration for corruption is yes. This is not the first time I
would be saying this. It won’t be the last time either. At least for as long as some people continue to act as if they can blackmail everyone into silence on the matter by casting it as necessarily a witch hunt, for that long would people like me continue to insist we don’t all necessarily have to pretend that the Jonathan administration was above board in spite of massive allegations and sometimes proof of corruption against certain members of the administration.

Although many supporters of that administration have tended to
portray the issue of probing the administration as an attempt to
get at Jonathan and possibly have him jailed, but that in my view is not the point at all. And it should not be except those making that claim, as the wife of the former president, Patience, had alleged once in the heat of the 2015 presidential campaign, are willing to accept the obvious implication of their allegation. Which is that the former president is corrupt. But I am sure that is neither their claim nor admission. Their opposition to the issue of probe might be connected to the possibility of the whole process being turned into a witch hunt of the president. This is what Nigerians must watch against. Otherwise, there is no reason in this world why Buhari should not look into the past.

There have been a lot of talks in the past about probing former
office holders whether at the federal, state or local government
level. But more often that not, nothing comes out of such talks.
Also when such warnings of probe are issued, they are often done to scare and thereby silence opposition. Where probes are ever attempted, they are dropped as soon as the individuals or groups they are directed at read the writing on the wall correctly and give up any challenge to the authority of those who have succeeded them in office.

The possible exception in this case was the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission probe of some former office holders during the Obasanjo administration. Even that has been made controversial by claims that the investigations were selective. This might be true as those the Commission went for were often on the wrong side of the Obasanjo administration. But that is not the same thing as saying that those investigated had nothing to answer for. Very often they were as guilty as sin.

The point some of us made on the issue of so-called selective
investigation of office holders levelled against Obasanjo was that
whoever took over from him could continue from where he
stopped, that is go after those Obasanjo allegedly ignored in his
anti-corruption battles. But the fact that some people were not
probed should not be sufficient ground for letting everyone off
without question, or even rewarding them like is the case with a
former aviation minister found culpable of corruption but who is
now sitting pretty in the Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber as a
law maker.

If both Umar Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan chose to forfeit
their right to investigate the Obasanjo administration, it was
simply their own failure. Only they know why they failed or
refused to act. But that is hardly any reason why some people
should expect Buhari not to probe the immediate past
administration of Goodluck Jonathan. Probing the Jonathan
administration should not be confused with probing Jonathan as
a person, except something is found against him. Jonathan’s
major problem, his mistakes while in office, seems to me to be
more of omission than commission. He lacked control over those who claimed to work for him. He allowed them free rein to operate as they deemed fit with neither caution nor control.

He was too indulgent, too accommodating of all kinds of
nonsense to be an effective leader, much less one who
commanded the respect of even his own subordinates except the fawning ones. My hunch therefore is that most of the rot that a possible probe would uncover about the Jonathan administration would be traceable mostly to his subordinates than to him personally. So far, the allegations making the round of massive looting and siphoning of funds abroad appear to justify my position. Although many of the potential culprits are beginning to feign ill health and are accusing agents of the present administration of harassment, we still must insist on their being probed while equally insisting on the protection of their rights as citizens of this country and as persons to be considered innocent until proven guilty. But it simply won’t wash for them to continue to play the ostrich in the vain hope that they won’t be held accountable for their misdeeds.

There are solid grounds why the probe of past office holders
should start with the Jonathan administration. What happened
under that administration, the level of criminal negligence, to say nothing of wilful destruction of the economy by corrupt office holders, is so stark and fresh for many Nigerians to see and feel. The trail is still very hot and can be followed up for possible discovery of unpardonable malfeasances. The president has said that much. It is true that what has so far been said reside in the realms of allegations, but we should all be patient until the proofs and facts are provided. Only when this present government or president is unable to do that should Nigerians start raising issues with them.

Up to this very moment Nigeria is still recovering stolen funds
traced to the Abacha family alone. There are those who still don’t believe that family has a case to answer to the Nigerian people. But when revelations of the looting spree Abacha instituted first started coming out in all its primitiveness, many doubted if one single person or family could take that much from a country without destroying the economy beyond repair. It is the same plea apologists of the Jonathan administration are making now. They can’t believe allegations of massive corruption and looting being connected to some people who destroyed hundreds of millions of Nigerian lives in the name of serving Jonathan either as ministers, heads of agencies and parastatals, etc.

We dare not begin to say yet that we are home safe and dry with the new government in place, but many times I have sat down to wonder what would have become of Nigeria now had Jonathan remained in office with the same crop of so-called experts with chains of foreign degrees, who with their double designations and portfolios as ministers, have left us so miserably grounded. I still wonder.

Politics / Jonathan’s Victory Could Have Denied God Glory by laidian(m): 7:24am On Aug 09, 2015
Pastor J.T. Kalejaiye is the Regional Evangelist of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who has touched several lives through his philanthropy, which has impacted on common people in the street, churches, police stations and prisons. He said he was excited by the emergence of Prof Yemi Osinbajo as the vice president. In this interview, he speaks about Osinbanjo and other national issues.
Excerpts:

When you heard that Professor Osinbajo emerged the Vice president how did you feel?

Not that I heard. I knew that was going to happen. If you ask Mike Awoyinfa, he would tell you that I said that in November last year, because I saw it. I am not a revenue pastor, rather I am a revelation pastor. I said it that there would be a pleasant surprise and that people should mari it. If you look at one of your publications, you will see that last year, I said it. I think I was the first person to see it. I knew that something was going to happen. You see, what happened now is not about politics and it is not even
about religion. What happened is spiritual. It was like the case of King Saul, who was nobody when God picked him, but at the end of the day, he sought help elsewhere. Ex-president Jonathan sought help from different sources and if he had won, the glory would have gone to money, traditional rulers and all those who collected money from him and God would have been rejected. He said he will not share his glory with any man. I want to look at it from that
perspective. If he had waited for God to take the glory, he could have probably won re-election. So, it’s not about election. What God has finished can no longer finish us. Those who cry to God don’t cry to man. You need to take an action to see God in action. Yes!

What’s your relationship with Professor Osinbajo and what do you know about him?

Oh! He is a good man, a wonderful man. I have no doubt that he will succeed and I told people that. You see, every Saturday in my house, we pray for the president and I have never met him one-on-one before. No, no, no! I just know that if it is well with him, it will be well with the country, you and me. Recently, when I ministered at Magodo, after the whole prayer session, I raised a prayer point for him. I prayed for Jega too because nobody knew that the election would be this successful and peaceful, or that Nigeria would still be Nigeria. A lot of people traveled abroad because of that, but I bless the name of the Lord for that. People were even threatening fire and brimstone but see how God intervened. This is a lesson to you and I that if you are on the Lord’s side, please stay put with Him. I watched the scene where some traditional rulers
were pointing their staffs at him. If Jonathan had won, the glory would have gone to traditional rulers. Let’s call a spade a spade. He started like Saul and he has ended like Saul. Is there no God in Israel that would make anybody to go outside Israel to seek for help? And this same God was there at the beginning to install him. So, it is a lesson for us.

You said you saw a revelation that President Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo would emerge president and vice president respectively?

I saw it clearly. Forget about religion. My boss was a Muslim when I was a worker and he did me well. The policeman attached to me then was a Muslim and we were always coming here to pray together. Some forget about religion. Some pastors don’t even know who a Christian is. I have said it, that bearing a Christian name doesn’t make you a Christian. The fact that somebody goes to church does not make him a Christian. If your name is not in the
Book of Life, you are not a child of God.

Sir, but some other pastors predicted that ex-President Jonathan would be re-elected.

Of course, they are revenue pastors. A prophet is known for revelation, not for revenue. God is not a man and he cannot lie. When you say that “God said” it is just a matter of time. When the time comes, we will know whether God has spoken or not. Why do we even go for revelations? Why don’t you play your part and allow God to play His. Because what God has finished can no longer finish us. I see people romance the government because of what they want to eat. A committee without commitment will commit
crime. For me, I have enough jobs to do that would occupy me. I have a God that I am serving that can give me direction. Not like people who call themselves into ministry and they are looking for cheap popularity. A man of God should remain a man of God; you can see our father in the Lord, Pastor Adeboye. He’s respected all over the world.

Some pastors endorsed President Jonathan and allegedly collected some billions of Naira from him. What do you have to say to that?

Let’s face reality. We are Nigerians. Just like you are, you can choose to go with anyone of your choice. We are not talking about selection here, we are talking about election and we have different choices to make. I cannot even force my children now to vote for who I want to vote for. It is a matter of choice and they are free. Anybody can endorse anybody.

How about the issue of the brown envelope, the money they were alleged to have received?

I can say that well, people said so but by the grace of God, I know of myself. I have never collected any envelope and I will never till I die. I will not. People like me cannot collect an envelope because doing that means that you have compromised. If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. They say association determines destination. When you are close to Jesus, you know your destination. When you are close to the world, get ready for
pollution and compromise. We are in the world but not of the world. I have always preached against anybody that collects money from anybody for this purpose. It’s a civic responsibility that has to be discharged accordingly. You don’t need to be bribed. And I don’t need to give somebody a brown envelope. How many people can that person influence? Will any pastor come tomorrow now to force me to vote for somebody I don’t want? We can now
see the result, despite the envelope thing, because God is God. To me, what just happened is a sermon because anybody who cannot learn from this is not it. I thank God for President Jonathan for even congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari before the result was announced by INEC. I mean, he is somebody who should be praised and rewarded because if he had not done so, it could have been an avenue for some people to begin to loot, kill,
destroy and that was the fear that made some people travel. I made a point known that this is just the beginning. That Buhari and Osinbajo are in the saddle doesn’t mean that all will be well on a platter of gold. We have to pray because things are bad already. For things to be made right, it’s not what can be done within a few
years, so people should be patient and try to endure, pending when things will start working. We don’t expect the miracle to start happening like that. They will have to deal with power, food, economy and some other things. We don’t expect the wonders within a short time.

Sir, what would you consider the major issue President Muhammadu Buhari concentrate on now?

I feel that the economy is very important. We also talk about security but I believe that God is already in control in that aspect. The economy is key because our image is just so bright out there, if I wouldn’t say something else. I travel a lot and the moment they see your green passport, it is like you are a second class citizen, and our image just has to be polished first and that is why I said we must fix the economy first because it determines a lot of things.
Then, welfare becomes the next thing. They must tell us, maybe we will be eating free food everyday or something like that.

Should we expect to see you on the political scene anytime in future?

No, no, no! I am not a politician, neither am I a prayer contractor. My duty is to win souls for Christ, bring people from their path of destruction and to light so that they canget out of slavery. I have told you that in my house, we pray for people that are up there. We also pray for our father in the Lord every day. Yoruba people say irorun igi ni irorun eiye (the comfort of the tree is the comfort of the bird). That is, when it is well with our leaders, it will be well with us too.

Don’t you consider vying for a public post as a way of giving back to the public through the same selfless service that you believe in?

I may not be popular in the political scene and that is why I said I don’t want to be a politician. If I want to go into politics, I will first declare my assets and then I will never collect any salary. Those who are coming in to work with me are not coming in to make money, and that is why I said I may not be popular. We want to take care of the generation yet unborn. Money is not something anybody can come here and make, sorry. We want to make this
money for the less privileged to enjoy. I buy rice, I buy noodles and we take care of the widows. When I say I buy, it cost me millions. Sometimes, two thousand bags of rice and more than a thousand cartons of noodles, Indomie. We give each bag to each widow that we don’t even know. We’ve been to Abeokuta stadium, Ibadan stadium, Kwara, Ondo, Igbokoda and Mushin, to mention a few. We go there with doctors and nurses and sometimes up to 50
healthcare professionals. We take care of people medically. We treat all of them free and then we do crusades in the evening. That’s all. The money is from our pockets. We don’t generate it from anyone. So, that is the kind of government I want. Some of these people have high blood pressure. If we can arrest this thing on time, the problem will be solved but when we allow it degenerate to an extent, then that is where the problem lies. And then, how many of them can even afford hospital bills? So, we look at what we can do so that we give them even boreholes, because of this water problem. How many of these people who are in government are doing that?

What’s your message for politicians and public office holders in Nigeria?

By the grace of God, I want them to rethink. Coming into public office is not for personal enrichment. You are a servant. In short, they call you public servant. You are accountable to people. Even if EFCC is not coming for you, your conscience should let you know that one day, you will leave this place. You are coming to put smiles on faces. Are people actually smiling? So, let them go into politics with the intention of helping people, helping them to cross
their Ts and dot their Is so that at the end of the day, people will smile. I am going to give you examples of two people, especially Jakande. When Jakande was the governor of Lagos State the first time, he campaigned because people never knew much about him but do you know the second time, he didn’t do much campaign? Everywhere he went, people celebrated him because of the good things he did during his first tenure. If you contested the first time,
you spent money, you are coming again to spend money then something is wrong with you. People should see your good works. People should be able to lay down their lives for you to make it again because they have seen the things you have done and the resources are there, either financial resources or human resources. So, I want to advise them, to go there and fulfill their promises. It is not compulsory that everybody will be there but let them make sure that by the time they leave, people will not be sorrowful. You get it? Yeah. Today when any of them leaves, some people are happy. “Thank God he has gone.” You see, every visitor
brings joy. You get it? If not at arrival, it will be at departure. If your departure from a place didn’t bring joy to your host, then you need deliverance.

Politics / My Husband Sold Our 2 Years Old Son For N.3m, Wife Cries Out by laidian(m): 8:32am On Aug 08, 2015
Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos
State Police Command have arrested a painter for allegedly selling his son for N300,000. The desperation to make money, the suspect claimed, prompted him to engage in the illicit trade. Kanayo Awurum who sold his two-year-old son, is currently cooling his heels in the protective custody of the SARS office located at the command headquarters, Adekunle Fajuyi Way, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos.

SATURDAY THISDAY gathered, that if the mother of the victim,
Ugochukwu Kelechi had not raised the alarm and police subsequently rose to the occasion by arresting the father, arresting the culprits would have been difficult.

Sources said Awurum relocated to Lagos without money on him,
and as a result, he told his wife about his intention to use his son for a loan, with a promise that after three months, he would offset the loan and claim their son back.

His wife was said to have objected to it. He was said to have sought advice from his friend, one Ibe Emmanuel who advised him to sell the boy. “Ibe even went ahead to assist in looking for a buyer and found one in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where the boy, Chukwunonyerum Samuel was sold to one Mrs. Chinwe.

“Ibe who assisted in getting a buyer was given N50, 000. Awurum rented a room in Ikotun with his own share. After some time, one of Awurum’s relations called him for a house painting contract in Owerri. He proceeded to Owerri, from where he called his wife and told her that the landlord should rent out the house to another person. The woman became worried and suspicious until the suspect stopped taking her calls. This prompted her, the landlord and the suspect’s friend to report the matter to the detectives at Ikotun Police station. The matter was later transferred to SARS. The suspect was tracked down and arrested. Upon preliminary interrogation, he confessed that he had sold his son,” hinted a police source.

Kenneth Nwosu, Lagos State Police Command Public Relations
Officer, confirmed the arrest. He said that SARS operatives were
detailed to go to Port Harcourt to arrest the buyer and also, to
recover the sold boy, adding that all those who took part in the
sale of boy would be prosecuted as soon as investigation is
concluded.

Three women have so far been arrested in connection with the
buying of the two- year-old boy. An informed police source at SARS has also hinted that the boy had been recovered from the buyers. Investigation revealed that the child was sold on 30th March, 2015 for N650, 000 to one Cecelia Nwatu, and not N300, 000 as claimed
by his father. The suspects, were arrested between 27th of May,
2015 and 1st June, 2015 in Port Harcourt and Enugu. The arrested suspects were identified as Nkechi Obi, Cecelia Nwatu and Gladys Nwobodo.

In her confession, Nwatu, 42-year-old, who hails from Nkanu,
Enugu State said that she bought the boy for N650, 000 contrary
to the claim by the boy’s father. According to her, she had three
children, comprising of two girls and a boy. The boy is an slowpoke and so, she needed a male child to bear the family name.

“Someone introduced me to the seller who knew when I was going to the orphanage to adopt a boy. On 30th of March, 2015, the woman called me and said I should bring N700, 000, that the child was available. I had only N450, 000 on me and so, I had to take loans here and there from people. My husband was ill then, and was in hospital for three months. I had looked for a male child to adopt in Enugu, but I could not get. That was how Nkechi Obi knew I was desperate for a male child,” the suspect who is a staff of Nkanu Local Government confessed.

Obi, 45, a nurse from Ikeduru in Imo State, who resides in Port
Harcourt and also a link between the seller and buyer of the baby said: “I don’t have a baby factory. The woman told me that she wanted to adopt a child. My brother told me that one Anayo wanted to sell off his son. But when Anayo came in person, I told him it was wrong to do that but he said he would write an undertaking.

So, he put everything in black and white. I told the buyer it was
N700, 000, but she said she could afford only N650,000 which she paid. Anayo collected N450, 000. They gave me N100, 000. I know it was a crime to buy and sell children, but since his father said he wanted to sell off his son and did an undertaking to that effect, I had no choice. As a nurse, when I was working with a doctor who is now late, he used to sell children under the guise of conducting abortion. That was how I came to know about the business. I used my own share of the money to pay my children’s school fees and the rest I spread on my business. I have lost my husband. I was arrested in Port Harcourt last week when my Landlord called me to meet him in a garage.

For Nwobodo, 38-year-old, who hails from Nkanu, Enugu State,
her sin was that she accompanied her brother’s wife, Cecelia who told her she was invited to adopt a son.

“She is my elder brother’s wife and she told me the boy she wanted to adopt was ready that I should accompany her to the
place. She wanted to adopt a boy because her son is slowpoke. I
was arrested on 27th May, 2015. I feel so bad that I was
involved in this. I am a clerical officer in my local government
area. I am married with three kids,” said Nwobodo.

Politics / 15 Injured As Soldiers, Policemen Fight In Edo by laidian(m): 8:18am On Aug 08, 2015
No fewer than 15 persons on Friday evening reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during a clash between men of the Nigerian Army and police officers from the Oba Market Police Station in Benin, the Edo State capital.

A pregnant woman was also said to be among the injured in the
clash, which occurred near the market located at the city centre,
forcing residents and shops owners in the area to flee in different directions for safety, as tear gas canisters and several shots were fired during fight.

Many residents were said to have been injured in a stampede and from inhaling the tear gas.

Trouble was said to have started when 10 policemen allegedly
beat up two soldiers to stupor at a traffic point at Ibiwe junction, close to the Oba Market station.

Some eyewitnesses said the action of the policemen followed the
alleged assault of a female traffic warden for allegedly preventing the soldiers from driving through the heavy traffic.

One of the soldiers was said to have repeatedly slapped the woman until some policemen intervened, resulting in a free-for-
all.

A soldier was said to have been detained as a result of the incident, a situation which reportedly led some soldiers, in over seven patrol vans, to invade the police station, forcing the policemen in the station to lock themselves inside the station while business owners locked their shops to prevent looting.

The soldiers were said to have stopped their over two-hour siege
to the police station at about 6.20pm, following the intervention
of top police officers in the state.

The spokesman for the Nigerian Army, 4 Brigade, Captain Jonah
Unuakhalu, told our correspondent that the command was not
involved in the clash, adding that the issue had been resolved with the Divisional Police Officer of the station.

“It has been resolved amicably,” he said. Calls to the telephone set of the state Police Public Relations Officer, Stephen Onwochei, could not connect as it indicated that the set could not be reached.

Politics / EFCC Invites Oloyede Over Petition Against Aregbesola by laidian(m): 6:33am On Aug 03, 2015
Indications emerged over the weekend that Justice Oloyede Folahanmi of Osun State Judiciary may have been summoned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over her claims in the petition sent to the anti-graft body.

Oloyede had in a 39-page petition, copies of which were sent to both the EFCC and ICPC, accused the governor, Rauf Aregbesola, of financial mismanagement of the state’s resources.

The judge also copied the state’s House of Assembly the petition and demanded Aregbesola’s impeachment for allegedly committing some constitutional breaches.

Sources close to the judge disclosed that she was invited to Abuja office of the commission to further shed light on some of her claims.

It was, however, learnt that Oloyede declined the invitation, advising the commission to, instead of inviting her to its office, come to the state and look through the government’s financial records.

A source close to the judge told our correspondent yesterday that she was invited by official of the commission, who contacted her through her mobile line.

“Yes, she was invited to Abuja office of the EFCC, but Oloyede told the officer that spoke with her that the commission should send its operatives down to Osun, having been given enough information in the petition sent to it,” the source said.

Another reason the judge gave for her inability to honour the commission’s invitation, it was further learnt, was poor state of her finances, claiming she had not been paid some months salaries and as such could not afford to finance any trip that will involve her paying for hotel and transportation.

Politics / I Received 57 Bullets, 20 Petitions For Serving Nigeria –abolurin by laidian(m): 6:20am On Aug 03, 2015
Immediate past Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolurin, yesterday disclosed how 57 bullets were shot at him in his 10-year sojourn as head of the asset safety agency.

He also disclosed that 20 petitions were written against him during his stay in office.

Abolurin said he faced several attacks in his determined resolve to serve God and humanity in the public service.

The former NSCDC boss was speaking at an interdenominational thanksgiving service organised for him at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja. He said on one occasion, over 1,000 unused bullets were recovered from some attackers sent to kill him when he
travelled to Plateau State on official duty.

Abolurin, who began his remarks with a song that Jesus will soon come back to judge the living and the dead, told the congregation that many people have said many things about what he had done but they did not talk about the efficacy of prayers in his life.

He specifically thanked God for shielding him from hired assassins, who he said, threw two grenades at his car in Plateau State, adding that God showed His enormous powers when the bullets shot at him refused to penetrate his body.

Abolurin, however, lamented that the incident led to the death of his driver.

He also gave testimony of how God saved him from a Bellview plane crash when the pilot announced that he had lost control, saying the prayers of the faithful kept him.

While acknowledging the number of Muslim faithful present at the event, Abolurin emphasised the need for more peaceful coexistence among believers of all faith.

In his remarks, Deputy Secretary, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Mr. Jayeola Daramola, who presented a bible gift on behalf of the association, described Abolurin as a dependable Christian, who he said served the nation honestly in his capacity as head of NSCDC.

Politics / PMB Under Pressure To Move Against Oil Thieves by laidian(m): 5:58am On Aug 01, 2015
Pressure is mounting on President Muhammadu Buhari to kick start his clampdown on oil thieves following his recent admission that he now has in his possession a list of such thieves.

Buhari, addressing Nigerians during his just concluded trip to the United States, had announced that Washington gave him the list.

He said that some members of the Jonathan Federal Executive Council stole as much as 250000 barrels of crude daily.

Several Western countries including the United Kingdom and France are said to have reached out to him to waste no further time in bringing the suspects to book. Nigerians are also itching to know the identities of the oil thieves .

A cross section of prominent Nigerians say President Buhari should make the names public forthwith and prosecute them.

Frontline lawyer,Professor Itse Sagay (SAN) told The Nation
yesterday that he shocked by the magnitude of the stealing.

“Before this fresh revelation, one was very disturbed when Okonjo Iweala, raised the alarm that about 400, 000 barrels were being stolen every day. To hear that the quantity is as much as one million barrel per day is something else,” he said.

“It shows the country went into a total rot under the last regime of President Goodluck Jonathan. They would have looted the country to bankruptcy within a year if they were not removed from office. We should be grateful that a disciplined and upright man has taken over to clean the mess and save the country.

“The punishments are not farfetched. They are already enshrined in our law books.

“We may ultimately have to resort to special court with specific time frame to decide the cases. The situation is very grave and we need to deal with it in an exceptional way.” Also shocked by the revelation is Chief Ladi Williams (SAN) who said: “the President should make public everything about it because the oil they stole belongs to the good people of Nigeria. The people have the right to know what is happening.

“Some schools of thought have suggested that the Chinese option should be applied in dealing with the suspects. It is a common knowledge that corrupt public officers in China always end up being executed. But here in Nigeria, we have the criminal and penal code. The suspects should be tried.

“The National Assembly has the power to establish a tribunal to try the suspects because the courts have too many cases already. From the tribunal, the next step should be Supreme Court because many of us are not happy with the way the Appeal Court has discharged itself. The Supreme Court has discharged itself creditably well.

“The suspects should be made to produce the money they realised from the sales of the stolen products. Any of them that parts with a substantial part of the money should be leniently dealt with.”

Elder statesman Tanko Yakassai said:“The president should not only tell us about the crime, he should go a step further to list the names of those involved in the criminal act and the amount involved. He should get them arrested and prosecuted. The truth is that these atrocities didn’t start today. They started way back when Obasanjo was the head of state.

“Key figures during that regime became instant multi-millionaires. There is not going to be any solution to the atrocities except the perpetrators are brought to book. I want to appeal to President Muhhamadu Buhari not to limit the probe to the Jonathan administration. If he really wants to get to the root of the problem, he should go back to the days of Obasanjo as military head of state.”

Another Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Second Republic politician, Enechi Onyia, said the suspects should be made to face the wrath of the law.

“The government should not stop at that. They should also do everything possible to retrieve the full value of the money that the country ought to realize from the product from the suspects. The government should not be swayed by sentiments that people are likely to express about its position or action plan because in everything that happens in life, people would always express sentiments,” he said.

Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamio called for prosecution of everyone found culpable in the crime, saying: “The effort of the President in fighting corruption in the country is highly commendable. This is what Nigerians looked forward to when they voted for him and I am glad that he is living up to his electioneering promises. I want to do everything possible to make sure that the perpetrators do not escape justice.”

Former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Abubakar Tsav,
expressed surprise at the revelation.

He said:“ “If the president’s statement is true, then, it is a serious matter. How can one person steal such quantity of crude oil? What are they using the money for when many people are hungry, homeless and sleeping under the bridge?

“ The crime is capable of collapsing an economy of a developing country. The perpetrators don’t mean well for the country and should be severely dealt with.

“I don’t support death penalty, but the offence is worth it. I will suggest that they should be sent to 25 years or life imprisonment. If the suspects are not fished out and dealt with, there would be a big challenge if Buhari is not re- elected after four years. If Buhari is not elected and another government that is worse than Jonathan’s come tom power, the country would be worse for it.

“If I were Jonathan, I would be ashamed of myself and refrain from making any comment. I think he should also be probed because it was before his very eyes that all this rots was taking place and he did nothing to stop it.”

The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State chapter, Joe Igbokwe, said more sad revelations of the activities of government officials in the Jonathan’s administration are coming.

According to him, “What Nigerians are hearing and seeing now will be a child’s play when the full story of how Nigeria was pillaged and plundered under Jonathan is told.

“In the fullness of time Nigerians will get to find out that former President Jonathan’s tenure was a systematic regime of heists. I am believing God that President Buhari will have the energy, strength and power to go the whole hog in repositioning Nigeria in the comity of civilized nations. Nigeria is getting better and this, l believe because a good man is in charge.”

Politics / I’m Toyin Saraki’s Private Investigator – Dino Melaye by laidian(m): 5:37am On Aug 01, 2015
The Chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee on Media and Publicity,
Mr. Dino Melaye, has defended his open support for Mrs. Toyin
Saraki, wife of the Senate President, when she honoured an
invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The Senator, representing Kogi West in the National Assembly,
said he had no regrets joining Saraki at the EFCC office.

Melaye said he went to the EFCC office “as a private investigator
and an anti-corruption crusader,” to find out the extent of
culpability of his “sister and friend” since she was not told the
content of the petition against her.

He said he was arrested 14 times in one year by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan because of his commitment to seeing a better Nigeria

He said, “The invitation of Mrs. Toyin Saraki by the EFCC, however, is not a criminal indictment. I will not abandon my friend because of (a) mere EFCC invitation.

“I also went there as a private investigator and an anti-corruption crusader to find out the extent of culpability of my sister and friend since she was not told the content of the petition against her before her appearance before the EFCC.”

Melaye, in a statement entitled, ‘Stand up for what you believe in regardless of the popularity or acceptance of your belief, which was obtained by Saturday PUNCH in Abuja, challenged anyone to controvert his claim that he had never taken any government contract, be it at the local, state or federal level.

He said, “I chose to react to the attacks I have received from my
brothers, sisters and fellow citizens because I was seen in the
headquarters of EFCC with my sister, Mrs. Toyin Saraki.

“I will start by saying that my struggle to fight corruption in Nigeria was not an assignment or a paid job. It was borne out of passion and desire to build a new Nigeria where justice, equity and egalitarianism become a new order.

“I was arrested 14 times in one year by the administration of ex-
President Goodluck Jonathan because I desire a country where
my grandchildren (that I may never know) will dwell in a nation
where life is already structured for them.

“I cannot throw away my sacrifice of being beaten and my clothes torn on the floor of the House of Representatives because of fighting against corruption. I have come too far to compromise my stand on corruption and corrupt persons.

“I make bold here to challenge anybody who will controvert the
truth that I have never done any government contract, either at the LG, state or federal levels. It is not criminal to do so, but he
who must come to equity must come with clean hands.

“If my father is invited by the EFCC, I will go there; if a prima facie case is established against him, I will shout for his prosecution. So my great people, I have no regret following my friend and sister to the EFCC. If you are my friend, you are my friend.”

Politics / I Still Want To Be Senate President – Ali Ndume by laidian(m): 8:45am On Jul 31, 2015
The Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, on Thursday, disclosed his ambition to be Senate President. He also revealed how he collected signatures of other senators to impeach the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, in the 7th Senate.

Ndume stated this while raising a point of order to draw the
attention of the Senate to an “offensive report” published in The
Nation newspaper of Thursday. The report had alleged that 22 Northern senators, who signed the vote of confidence passed in support of Senator Bukola Saraki’s leadership of the Senate, were working against the interest of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ndume said, “I personally still want to be senate president. I also believe that any of us will not mind to be the senate president. As for the deputy senate president, I contested against the deputy senate president. I did not contest with him to lose that election.

“I contested with him in order to win that election but it is God that gives power to whoever he wants. Whatever happened on the 9th of June, my friend Ekweremadu became the deputy senate president.

“Let me say for the record and for those that were not in the 7th Senate, it is not something of pride, but I stand here to say, he is here, that I am the only person that attempted to impeach him.

“I collected signatures in order to impeach him because of certain things which I explained and we discussed.

“Why I am taking us through all these is because the nation is
watching us and this drama that is going on cannot continue
because that is not why we are here and this leadership thing
whether we like it or not, whether we change it or we maintain
this one, only one person will be the senate president.

“I want to say something about an issue that has been lingering
in this Senate and it is about to distort or take us away from the
main reason why we are here.

“I said it before and I am still maintaining this position. Each and every one of us here that is elected as a senator is qualified to be the senate president by all standards; but out of the 109 of us, one has to be the senate president while another person has to be the deputy senate president. It so happened, that Senator Bukola Saraki is now our senate president.

“Senate leadership has gone beyond an individual. You cannot
become the leader of the Senate when the senators are not ready to accept your leadership. If two-thirds of the senators say today that I am not the leader, I am out”.

Politics / Paternity Fraud In Nigeria: Are You Your Baby’s Daddy? by laidian(m): 6:26am On Jul 30, 2015
In an article that recently resurfaced, originally published two
years ago, a DNA expert said three out of 10 Nigerian men are
not the biological fathers of their children. The article no doubt
caught the attention of many. And though the authenticity of
the statement remains in question, it certainly provoked a
conversation, and surely, reactions.

I am certain a good number of men began to question their
paternity, and those who had prior suspicions must have gone
ahead to take a paternity test. This information came right after
the rumoured durex survey which alleged that Nigerian women
are the most unfaithful in the world; the statement seemed to
fan a flame.

In his interview, the expert made reference to the survey, saying
that the sexual recklessness of Nigerian women is the reason for
the alarming statistics of paternity fraud in country.

In truth, cases of paternity fraud aren’t common in Nigeria,
largely because they are either often settled out of court, or
swept under the carpet. In other parts of the world, the United
States for example, paternity fraud is a criminal offence, and
one of the most rampant cases in court. Reason? Child support:
women seize opportunities to receive a higher child support
award than the biological father of the child can provide.

This issue is such a big deal in the West; there are activists and
movements against it. In a country like Nigeria, as is with most
West African countries, fathers cater for children born prior
wedlock, or out of extramarital affairs, without the involvement
of the court. So legal cases of paternity fraud are not common.

Another reason for paternity fraud is sexual promiscuity.
Promiscuous and unfaithful women are more likely to
misattribute paternity, honestly or dishonestly. An Australian-
based research did show that 40 per cent of women and 60 per
cent of men in a committed relationship will be unfaithful at
some point. And that 8 per cent of women had multiple
partners while in a long-term relationship.

It was also established that fathers who doubt the paternity
claims of their sexual partners are 20 to 28 per cent often
correct. The result of a research on the sexual promiscuity
among Nigerian female undergraduates indicated a 79 per cent
agreement on the prevalence of sexual promiscuity amongst
female undergraduates.

In a phone interview with Ventures Africa, Mr. Ayodele Ayodeji
of Paternity Test Nigeria said there is one case of paternity fraud
out of every four paternity tests conducted at the centre. “I will
say one out of four paternity tests turn out negative,” he told
me. He also added that people of the South-east – Ibos and
South-south – Deltans, patronise the centre more than the
people of western Nigeria – the Yorubas.

The implications of paternity fraud are major, disrupting
relationships, homes, and marriages. Victims of this crime –
father or child – stands the risk of depression, and mental
health problems. A child victim is more likely to have self
esteem issues and anxiety.
When women make the choice to lie about the paternity of their
children, they should bear in mind the misery and heartache
these children may later experience.
American film maker and actor, Tyler Perry, admitted to being
hurt and disappointed that his late mother lied to him about the
true identity of his father.

He found out the truth at the age of 44 after taking a DNA test
with his brother. His advice: “Some of you have secrets that
your kids need to know. Let the chips fall where they may.
For the peace of that person, let them know.”

MizMyColi...even though we support the PDP, I think it shouldn't be a choice that should inhibit our over all sense of right or wrong. I understand that supporting a particular cause might channel all our spirit and emotional strengths into that cause, I will still appeal that you also look at the arguments from the e-PDP supporters with a sense of 'there might be another side of the argument'.

I must admit that the conduct of certain people here in the run up to the 2015 election was both appalling and repulsive, I still think we should live above board and be seen to have done so.

I believe I am closer to the PDP than you are. I also benefited from the PDP led-government, and continue to do so. However, the truth must be told.

In your very first comment on this thread, you alluded to the fact that you wonder why Jonathan left Dasuki. Now that is the spirit. There are certain people in the previous regime that must be held accountable for their stewardship and Dasuki is one of them. Political leaning aside, Jonathan's handling of the Boko Haram issue was not good enough. The former President came on live TV to lament that certain elements who are sympathetic to the BH menace were in his government. Many years down the road and no one was either arrested or convicted. In as much as I believe the BH issue was partly fuelled by the North's 'born to rule' mentality, the President should have tackled it as he did some few weeks to the election.

Anyone who thinks that Dasuki was picked for his role in the coup that ousted Buhari in the 80's should think again. Under Dasuki, the army became a laughing outfit in Nigeria and other countries. The previous NSA didn't perform as badly as Dasuki, but the North protested for long and he was removed. But there was no protest against Dasuki, even though his tenure was worst. And this happened at a time when the defence budget became very huge. The only people who will bring up what happened in the 80's to try and defend Dasuki are those who don't have the interest of this country at heart.

If Jonathan is found wanting during his time as President, he should be made to face justice. Nothing stopped him from probing Obasanjo's time as President. Nigerians would have applauded him had he done so. This country is bigger than any individual. After Buhari leaves office, the incoming administration too would look into his time as President. No one is above the law!

May the blessings of today never evade you. God bless your brain.
