Politics / Siasia To Contest Bayelsa Gov by laidian(m): 4:05am On Jul 06, 2015 |
The younger brother of Coach Samson Siasia has expressed his desire to contest the Bayelsa State governorship election next year. Moses, who spoke at a news conference in Yenagoa, on Saturday, lamented that Bayelsa had witnessed several broken promises since its creation in 1996. The 35-year-old described the unemployment rate in the state as alarming, saying that 85 per cent of Bayelsa populace was unemployed. He said he would contest the governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party later in the year. He also said the state’s huge monthly revenues from the Federal Government had not translated into an improved standard of living among the people of the state. Siasia, who is a kinsman of the incumbent Governor Seriake Dickson, said the state needed a productive machinery to reverse the socio-economic problems allegedly dogging Bayelsa State. He said, “Unemployment is taking its toll on our youths. We have over 85 per cent of Bayelsa youths unemployed. How do we create employment for our teeming youths that have been impoverished by successive governments and that have become disillusioned?” “Now, we need to create a great industrial and education revolution in Bayelsa. Today, I have spoken with some of my partners that would be encouraged to create jobs in the state – as soon as I get the mandate. “In one year, we can create 20,000 jobs. You don’t give what you don’t have. I have created jobs before. I am doing it now in my business. So, if I am saddled with public office, I can do more for our people. What we have are people who have not created jobs anywhere. They don’t even understand the dynamics of creating jobs for the people. “We need a leadership mindset that can transform the state and make it an economic hub, a marine hub. Today, the world is talking about blue sea economy, where people can use marine. Government can use the marine sector and create massive jobs and industrialisation for their people and that is what we going to do.” www.punchng.com/news/siasia-to-contest-bayelsa-gov/ |

Religion / At Last , Scientists Prove Life After Death by laidian(m): 5:21am On Jul 05, 2015 |
A TEAM of psychologists and medical doctors associated with the Technische Universität of Berlin , announced on Saturday July 4 , 2015 morning that they have proven , through clinical experimentation , the existence of some form of life after death. Their discovery , according to the team of scientists led by Dr Berthold Ackermann , was based on the conclusions of a study using a new type of medically supervised near - death experiences , which allow patients to be clinically dead for almost 20 minutes before being brought back to life . This controversial process that was repeated on 944 volunteers over that last four years , necessitates a complex mixture of drugs including epinephrine and dimethyltryptamine , destined to allow the body to survive the state of clinical death and the reanimation process without damage . The body of the subject was then put into a temporary comatic state induced by a mixture of other drugs which had to be filtered by ozone from his blood during the reanimation process 18 minutes later . The extremely long duration of the experience was only recently made possible by the development of a new cardiopulmonary recitation (CPR) machine called the AutoPulse . This type of equipment has already been used over the last few years , to reanimate people who had been dead for somewhere between 40 minutes to an hour. Near -death experiences have been hypothesized in various medical journals in the past , as having the characteristics of hallucinations , but Dr Ackermann and his team , on the contrary , consider them as evidence for the existence of the afterlife and of a form of dualism between mind and body . The team monitored the operations and compiled the testimonies of the subjects . Although there are some slight variations from one individual to another , all of the subjects have some memories of their period of clinical death. and a vast majority of them described some very similar sensations . Most common memories include a feeling of detachment from the body , feelings of levitation , total serenity, security , warmth , the experience of absolute dissolution , and the presence of an overwhelming light . The scientists say that they are well aware the many of their conclusions could shock a lot of people , like the fact that the religious beliefs of the various subjects seems to have held no incidence at all, on the sensations and experiences that they described at the end of the experiment . Indeed , the volunteers counted in their ranks some members are a variety of Christian churches , Muslims, Jews , Hindus and atheists. “ I know our results could disturb the beliefs of many people ” says Ackermann . “ But in a way , we have just answered one of the greatest questions in the history of mankind , so I hope these people will be able to forgive us . Yes , there is life after death and it looks like this applies to everyone . ” www.dailyindependentnig.com/2015/07/ at-last-scientists-prove-life-death/ 1 Like |
Politics / Court Judge Pays Fine For Convict Who Stole 54 Apples by laidian(m): 9:58am On Jul 04, 2015 |
A judge of Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court sitting in Nasarawa State, Mr Albert Maga, on Friday paid the N500 option fine he imposed on a convict. Maga had sentenced, Chita Ugochukwu, 20, to three months imprisonment for stealing 54 pieces of apples. He, however, advised the convict to go back to his village rather than stealing since he had no job. The convict, of no fixed address, was arraigned on a one-count charge of theft. Maga held that the convict understood the charge read to him and pleaded guilty to the charge. He held that the confession made by the convict at the Divisional Police Station, Nasarawa State, confirmed that he committed the offence as he equally pleaded for leniency. “In passing sentence, I take into consideration the principles governing sentencing. “Since you didn’t waste the time of the court by pleading guilty and asked for leniency, there must be a balanced justice while condemning the act. “The accused, from all indication, appears to be a first time offender as no previous record of him is before the court and the complainant has forgiven him. “I, hereby, sentence you to three months in prison with an option to pay fine of N500″, Maga held. Earlier, the prosecuting officer, Cpl. Friday Adaji, had told the court that Ugochukwu stole the apples belonging to one Monday Ifeanyi, on June 27 at Mararaba. www.dailypost.ng/2015/07/04/area-court-judge-pays-fine-for-convict-who-stole-54-apples/ 1 Like |
Crime / My Friend Sold Me To Ritualists For N150,000 by laidian(m): 5:27am On Jul 04, 2015 |
Hearing the story of kidnapped people for ritual purposes or for a ransom is disturbing and many just thank God it isn’t them and pray against it. The truth however is that with dangerous elements that carry out these dastardly acts roaming freely amongst us, everyone is at risk. Here is the story of a young man, Timothy Lawani, 25, a trader at Suleja roundabout area, who was kidnapped for ritual purpose but survived the ordeal. Lawani, in an interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, said it was God that saved him after he was kidnapped, tied up and was to be sacrificed in Kano. The incident happened at about 4am on January 14, 2015. Lawani went outside his family house at Old Barracks, Suleja to ease himself, when suddenly he heard someone call his name. Walking towards a red Volkswagen Golf parked behind his house, he was surprised to see an old friend, Friday, comfortably seated in the car beckoning on him with two hefty men. Narrating his story, Lawani said, “In my confused state, I greeted them. One of them held me and the other sprayed a powder on my face. That was the last thing I could remember. I later saw myself in a very large hall with other young men who were tied up. The kidnappers kept bringing other people to join us. Sometimes, they even offered us food to eat which we all refused. They then said, whether we ate or not, we would die after all. “After two days, we were made to put on white apparels and join a queue. I noticed that anyone who goes out never comes back; I was so scared. When it was my turn, I went outside, saw a large pool of water like swimming pool and a man standing by the side chanting incantations. He later ordered the guards to take me inside that they were not in need of someone like me.” Continuing, Lawani said, “In my presence, the man called on Friday who came about 40 minutes later. After telling him that I was not acceptable for their rituals, Friday started flogging me mercilessly. He then ordered the men to take me out, but not before the ritualist got angry, and ordered the hefty men to bring Friday for sacrifice in my place. I heard him beg them to give him just 30 minutes to enable him bring another person, but the man said there was no time. “With Friday’s hands and legs tied, the man began chanting incantations again. This time, I saw crocodiles coming out of the water. Friday was then thrown inside, the reptiles feasted on him. I was not myself because of the sight of blood and how such large reptiles ate up a whole human being. The man later ordered the men to throw me out, that I was useless to them. They sprayed a powder on my face again and I became unconscious.’’ On how he got back to his senses, Lawani recalled that he was sheltered by a Hausa man who saw him wandering in Gomoja area of Kano State. After prayers were offered for him for about three days, he regained consciousness but could not speak. It was then he wrote down his father’s phone number which he easily remembered and with which they used to reach his family, that had been searching frantically for him. LEADERSHIP Weekend later learnt from his elder brother, Theophilus Lawani, that his friend sold him to the kidnappers for N150,000. Theophilus further revealed that before the Hausa man called them from Kano, Lawani’s friend sent them several messages, telling them to forgive him for selling his friend. “Even before we got the text from Friday, we reported the case at A division Police Station in Suleja, but the Policemen demanded the sum of N70,000 in order to start investigation. Since we do not have such amount, we resorted to prayers, and God answered us. We have decided to take my brother for further prayers in Kaduna,” Theophilus stated. All efforts by LEADERSHIP Weekend to speak with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of A Division was futile as it was referred to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the headquarters in Minna. Meanwhile, a Police officer who pleaded anonymity, said there have been several incidents of kidnapping within and outside the state, but the police have tried to curtail the rate by investigating and arresting suspects. Giving tips on how people could prevent themselves from being kidnapped, he said, “People need to be wary anywhere they are. An isolated target is easier to pick up. It is better for people to be strengthened by being in groups. Hostage takers would have to work harder to kidnap members of a group than to kidnap an individual. People should also try to promptly report any kidnap case around them to the nearest police station.” According to a security expert, Bashir Wole, people should be very cautious whenever they come in contact with any stranger. “People ought to become more alert and discerning to protect themselves from being kidnapped. Government also needs to do more in terms of detecting, arresting and punishing kidnappers, such that the severity of the punishment would deter others from engaging in such. “There must be enforcement and punishment that can deter people from going into kidnapping. If people are punished, maybe by capital punishment, others would conclude that it is not worth it. The criminal justice system must work. The reason kidnapping is lucrative in Nigeria is impunity; people think they can do it and get away with the crime. The fear of the grievous punishment should be such that will keep people from further committing the crime.” The general public is advised to heed to advice from security experts and the Police by being alert and security conscious to avoid timothy’s experience. We should all learn to be security conscious wherever we goes. http://leadership.ng/features/444649/my-friend-sold-me-to-ritualists-for-n150000-victim |

Now that the US has demonstrated its commitment to equality before the law, by ensuring same-sex couples can now marry in all 50 states of the confederate following its historic Supreme Court’s ruling which gave marriage equality as a constitutional right throughout the country one will wonder if this trend will find its way to Nigeria. In Nigeria, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons are still facing legal and social challenges only peculiar to their community. Here, same-sex sexual activity is not only illegal, it is a punishable offence. According to the stipulations of Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in Nigeria, offenders are to face 14 years’ imprisonment , and the punishment isdeath by stoning in the twelve northern states that have adopted Sharia law , which applies to all Muslims and to those who have voluntarily consented to application of the Sharia courts in the region. Nigeria has been criticized severely by civil rights organizations, as well as the United Nations, for failing to uphold, and violating, the rights of LGBT people but this has not changed the cultural disposition of its people to the topic. However, the golden question is, can you ever imagine same-sex becoming a way of life that Nigerians will one day come to terms with? www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/will-you-support-gay-rights-in-nigeria/ cc: lalasticlala |
Politics / How Ndigbo Underdeveloped Igboland by laidian(m): 5:52am On Jun 28, 2015 |
In our discussion last Sunday, I made the point, which was almost distorted by editorial pusillanimity, that ideally, in order to render justice to Ndigbo Nigerian leaders who participated in genocide against them during the civil war should be prosecuted at the International Court of Justice. But I also argued that given the very low level of political maturity and moral consciousness in the country presently, that would never happen. Now, the major motivation for the two-part series entitled “Ndigbo and the burden of history” is to draw attention to how members of the ruling elite dominated by Northerners had, especially from 1966 to 1999, contributed to the underdevelopment of Igboland. The civil war provided haters of Ndigbo within Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s cabinet and the Nigerian army to execute their genocidal intentions against Igbo people. And even afterwards, the same misanthropes insisted on maximum punishment for the former Eastern region. Accordingly, the Gowon administration adopted a banking policy that nullified any bank account operated during the war by the Biafrans. Each Igbo depositor of the Nigerian currency could only access a flat sum of twenty pounds, irrespective of the deposit. In addition, the military government promulgated the Enterprises Promotion Decree of 1974, or Indigenisation Decree, ostensibly to compel foreign holders of majority shares of companies operating in Nigeria to hand over a larger percentage of stocks, bonds and shares to indigenous Nigerian business interests. But the real targets of that decree were the war-weary Biafrans already impoverished by the conflict, the wicked banking policy mentioned earlier, and ban on importation of second-hand clothes (okirika) and stockfish. Of course, the Igbo in general did not have the financial wherewithal to benefit from the Indigenisation Decree. Moreover, most of the jobs and positions in virtually all the sectors of the economy previously occupied by Easterners were taken over by those from other parts of the country. In my opinion, scars of the civil war and its aftermath are still visible in Igboland. For instance, as I have stated severally in this column, of the six geopolitical zones in the country, theSouth East has the least number of developmental projects from the federal government. It is very likely that marginalisation of Igboland would continue under President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, because his party, the All Progressives Congress, is dominated by political shylocks who would want to exact revenge from the South East for voting massively for former President Goodluck Jonathan. It is patently false to lay all the blame for the underdevelopment of Igboland on Igbophobic Nigerians from other ethnic groups. The desperate situation there has been worsened by the blizzard of incompetent leadership in different Igbo speaking states. Specifically, with very few exceptions, top political office holders in the states that comprise the defunct Eastern Region have been grossly incompetent, selfish and corrupt. From the administration of Ukpabi Asika to the present governments of the five South Eastern states, financial rascality, nepotism, indiscipline, corruption, and petty jealousies and visionlessness have remained leitmotifs in Igboland. Governors, commissioners, top civil servants, highly placed judicial officers, traditional rulers and members of the clergy have sacrificed core values of truthfulness, hard work, honesty, integrity, regard for good name, humility and brotherly love embedded in Igbo culture in the pursuit of power and wealth. How many governors in Igboland, both past and present, can give satisfactory account of how they spent the monies that accrued to their respective states during their tenure? Why is it that governors, federal and state legislators and other top political office holders become stupendously rich after leaving office? In large parts of Igboland, the roads, health facilities, educational institutions, etc have deteriorated despite the revenue accruing to both the states and local governments. People of Imo still remember with nostalgia late Chief Sam Mbakwe for his laudable achievements in the old Imo state, which should have been emulated and improved upon by governors that came afterwards. It is deplorable that many prominent Igbo sons and daughters who could have deployed their influence to attract developmental projects from the federal government to their respective states merely use their positions to enrich themselves. Another cause for concern is absurd and pernicious discrimination within each South Eastern state and between the five states as well. For example, in the civil service and educational institutions up to the university level, people from different parts of the same state discriminate and fight among themselves. Sometimes, an application for employment or promotion is rejected because the person is from Imo state rather than Enugu state, and vice versa. Former governor of Abia state, Theodore Orji, committed a very serious blunder when he sacked employees from other Igbo speaking states in a misguided attempt to ameliorate the unemployment problem there. Although he later reversed the decision, his irrational action demonstrates that sometimes Ndigbo are their own worst enemies. The Igbo not only fight themselves in Igboland; some of them for selfish reasons exhibit excessive competitiveness in other parts of the federation. In the North and South West, there are incidents of unhealthy rivalry between Igbo individuals and groups, each trying to outdo one another using Machiavellian tactics, generating unnecessary animosity in the process. Certainly, within reasonable limits, ambitiousness and competitiveness are psychological triggers for self-discovery, self- actualisation, and societal progress. But in the long run, it is better for Ndigbo wherever they might be to work together in solidarity for the benefit of one another. It is betrayal of the highest order that prominent sons and daughters of Igboland create socio-cultural and political associations purportedly to promote collective Igbo interests, whereas the real intent is to use such bodies for getting favours from government. Some of them even collect mobilisation fees from government without executing the contracts meant for their states. More than anything else, there is urgent need for moral and ideological reorientation in Igboland. Well-placed Ndigbo should see themselves as role models for the young ones to emulate. Right now, the lifestyles of many Igbo VIPs tend to promote excessive preoccupation with primitive accumulation and hollow ostentation. Now, the average Nigerian generally believes that Ndigbo love money too much, more than members of other ethnic groups. There is a pernicious cliché that if a purportedly dead Igbomanfails to rise up at the clanging of coins near his ears then he is truly dead. The fact of the matter is that different people have different levels of pecuniary attachment, irrespective of their ethnic origins. The Hausa-Fulani, the Yoruba, the Nupe, the Isokoand so on want to be as financially comfortable as much as the Igbo. Remember, Ndigbo, because of hardships of the war and the need to survive extremely daunting post-war challenges, had to struggle harder than other Nigerians just to survive. Even before the civil, their gregarious can-do-it attitude compelled them to leave their homeland in search of livelihood nationwide. And because jealous Igbophobic Nigerians unnecessarily concerned by the relative successes of Ndigbo in their midst, misinterpreted the single-minded determination of the latter by creating the myth of excessive money mindedness referred to earlier. I submit that Igbo political office holders who steal funds meant for the development of Igboland are a complete disgrace and should be treated as enemies of the people. For Ndigbo to occupy their rightful place as primus inter pares within the Nigerian federation, they must begin to live according to the moral principles encapsulated in the concept of ezigbo aha kariri ego(good name is superior to money). Prominent Igbo indigenes, wherever they might be, must set aside their ephemeral egoistic interests and work for the good of Igboland as a whole. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/how-ndigbo-underdeveloped-igboland/ 2 Likes |
Politics / Why Diezani Must Be Probed by laidian(m): 5:40am On Jun 28, 2015 |
Barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed all the members on the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, a Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has reiterated his call for the erstwhile Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to be probed. Keyamo had, on June 17, written a letter to the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives asking the National Assembly to commence investigations into the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, especially with regard to the crude oil swap programme and offshore processing agreements of the company. He alleged that some NNPC officials, in collaboration with some local companies, were looting the country’s resources. In an interview with Sahara TV on Saturday, Keyamo said there was an array of issues necessitating investigations into Alison- Madueke’s management of the ministry. He said, “It is about a whole lot of issues. In my petition, I was particular about what has come to be known as the crude oil swap deals. Under this arrangement, we never knew that a lot of our crude oil was given to private oil companies in exchange for their bringing in petroleum products. Under one arrangement, they were supposed to take it out. We signed (out) the products and then took them back to Nigeria whether they were petroleum products or by-products. “Under the other arrangement, we were supposed to be given the crude oil to sell at the international market and then use the money to import petroleum products into the country. Now, there have been reports in the papers of late that under these arrangements, certain Nigerian oil and gas companies made very huge, unwarranted profits and the simple reason is that they imported far less than the crude oil that they bought. “Under this arrangement, some of them bought private jets, property around the world and began to live large. Certain individuals in the NNPC were seen as collaborators in this deceitful and grand plot. Before the minister left office, she picked up her pen and wrote a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, inviting it to probe these individuals and these groups. And I asked myself some imple questions: It is a bit curious who had supervisory authority over these individuals and these issues.” According to the legal practitioner, Alison-Madueke had access to all the relevant documents. He explained that she could have easily called for the offenders and given queries to them. “Why did she wait till the last minute to write a petition to the EFCC to probe these deals? And I told myself: It is not a safe person who runs to a police station to complain that is always the victim of the crime,” Keyamo said. www.punchng.com/news/why-diezani-must-be-probed-keyamo/ |
