May be quizzed by EFCC
Reps summon CBN Gov, AGF

President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to deal with all those involved in padding the 2016 budget estimates has started claiming its first set of victims, as the sacked former Director General of the Budget Office, Alhaji Yahaya Gusau and two other Directors in the office have been placed under house arrest. Also, three other Directors in the Federal Ministry of Budget and Planning have been placed under house arrest by the Department of Security Service, DSS and operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC over their alleged role in the controversial padding of the 2016 appropriation document. This is coming just as the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations yesterday invited the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun and her counterpart in the Budget and Planning, Udoma Udo Ndoma, in respect to the padding of the 2016 Appropriation Bill. Others invited by the committee are: the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, Accountant-General of the Federation, AGF and the Director-General of Budget Office of the Federation.‬ Chairman of the committee, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin who gave the directive explained that grey areas relating to alleged infractions and padding observed by various standing committees during the interface with the ministers and heads of departments and agencies would be addressed. ‪Similarly, Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara directed chairmen of all the standing committees to submit and defend their MDAs’ budget within 24 hours or risk zero budget for 2016.‬

Politics / Supreme Court Has Ended APC Pipedream On Fayose’s Victory - Aide by lamzybaby: 7:58pm On Feb 25, 2016
Special Assistant to the Ekiti State Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka has said yesterday’s Supreme Court judgment on the leadership dispute within the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in which the court said it lacked jurisdiction to review its own judgment should be enough for members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State to stop living in the illusion that the Supreme Court judgment on the June 21, 2014 governorship election can be reviewed.

Politics / President Buhari Urges OIC To Support Fg's Efforts To Resettle Idp's by lamzybaby: 7:46pm On Feb 25, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari said Thursday in Mecca that the Federal Government will welcome support from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its ongoing efforts to rehabilitate parts of the country affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. Speaking at a meeting with the Secretary General of the OIC, Mr Iyad Ameen Madani, President Buhari urged the organisation to send a fact-finding mission to the ravaged states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states to see the damage done by terrorists. The President told Mr. Madani that the fact-finding visit will help the OIC to determine the scope of assistance it can offer to Nigeria for the rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced persons. President Buhari also challenged the OIC to act urgently in support of the restoration of peace, law and order to Libya which, he said, had been breeding the terrorists causing mayhem in West and Central African countries following the fall of the Ghaddafi regime. President Buhari agreed with Mr. Madani that Islam has been wilfully misrepresented by terrorists. The President said that it is only by educating people properly about Islam that terrorists will be deprived of legitimacy and a basis for the recruitment of followers. He therefore urged the OIC to assist the Federal Government in bringing true knowledge and enlightenment to all Nigerians.

Politics / Seven Takeaways From President Buhari's Visit To Egypt- Garba Shehu by lamzybaby: 11:12am On Feb 23, 2016
In the difficult moments of our history, looking precisely at the period of Nigeria’s war of unity 1966-1971, Egypt proved to be a strategic partner from helping to train our military to support with equipment and aircraft maintenance. In the course of his bilateral meeting with the Egyptian leader, Abdul Fattah El-Sisi, President Muahmmadu Buhari recalled that in the course of his service in the army, he too received military training in Egypt. This 24-hour visit to to the Red Sea resort of Sharm Al-Shaikh was not just a ‘trip to Egypt’ as it has been wrongly portrayed, as if it were primarily bilateral in nature or a ritual courtesy call on President Sisi. The purpose was to promote investment and job creation in Nigeria and throughout West, Central and East Africa, together with other African leaders The Sharm el-Sheikh ‘Africa 2016’ conference aimed at tearing down trade barriers between North and sub-Saharan Africa – a partnership anchored by the continent’s biggest and third-biggest economies (i.e., Nigeria and Egypt) by the injection of life into a 26-nation free-trade pact signed by half the number of countries on the continent a year ago. The organizers brought together more than 1200 delegates to Sharm el-Sheikh, included among these the eight Presidents and Prime Ministers, ministers of trade and investment, representatives of global financial institutions, businessmen and investment executives. It is expected that this new pan-African initiative will directly benefit Nigeria in its efforts to expand and diversify jobs and exports beyond the oil industry – a core component of President Buhari’s economic vision for the country. Knocking down trade barriers within Africa will create new markets for Nigerian farmers, manufacturers and other businesses. In his opening remarks, Egypt’s President El-Sisi said that the forum aimed at “pushing forward trade and investment in our continent to strengthen Africa’s place in the world economy.” Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari who touted an extensive economic agenda said that this is not without challenges. “The new problem affecting investment is international terrorism…lots of resources that could be used for development are being diverted to address security issues.” As he and many others noted, the only way this can be redressed is by widening the participation of the private sector in African economies, the very idea behind the conference in Egypt. One shining example of how this could be done came from the African Development Bank, ADB which announced through its President, Nigeria’s Akinwumi Adesina that the bank would be investing 12 billion Dollars in the energy sector in the coming five years to provide access to electricity. There are 645 million Africans without access to electricity. President Buhari’s visit to Egypt wasn’t limited to the business of “Africa 2016” in its success, as it turned out to be one that is a remarkable watershed in bilateral ties between the two states. While it was not surprising that El-Sisi rolled out the red carpet for President Buhari in line with what many say is a plan by Egypt to rebuild the country’s money-spinning tourism industry in tatters since the mid-air bombing in October of a Russian plane, killing all 223 tourists and crew, the truth is also that these two of Africa’s three biggest economies had been too far apart when it comes to trade. The two leaders also bonded well with each other at their first meeting in Addis Ababa early in the new year. By the last count, bilateral trade between the two states amounts to a meager USD 100 million, with Egypt drawing about 80 percent of the benefit.

Politics / Ali Modu Sheriff Speaks: My Boko Haram Story – Pilot Newspaper by lamzybaby: 3:30am On Feb 23, 2016
Insists he won’t step down from office

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, yesterday shed light on the controversial issue of his alleged funding of the Boko Haram sect, saying he is a victim of political mischief and bad blood.
Responding to a question during an interactive session with journalists at the PDP national secretariat after the former Acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus handed over to him, Senator Sheriff said, contrary to the speculations, members of Boko Haram insurgents marked him for elimination for thwarting their plans to Islamise the entire country.
He said he was the governor of Borno state when the Boko Haram erupted and contributed in great measure with others to put the sect in check within five days.
He explained that the late President Umaru Yar’Adua ordered the military and the police to ensure the Boko Haram insurgency did not escalate and because of the support he gave to ensure that the group was curtailed, he got into their bad books.

Politics / States’ Foreign Debts Hit $3.2bn , Cannot Repay In The Next 50 Years -Shehu Sani by lamzybaby: 2:53am On Feb 22, 2016
In apparent opposition to the desire of the Northern Governors Forum to seek loan from the Islamic Development Bank, IDB in Saudi Arabia to bail them out of the current economic down turn, Senator Shehu Sani has revealed that current foreign debt profile of Nigerian states stands at a staggering $3,271,960,461.03 mark. Senator Sani, representing Kaduna Central senatorial district is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic Debts. According to the lawmaker, “Most of these debts were loans collected in the name of infrastructure or investment without anything to show for them.” Senator Sani, who was reacting to the Northern Governors’ claim through their chairman, Alhaji Kashim Shettima of Borno State that he was wrong in his opposition to their move to secure loan from the IDB in Saudi Arabia, insisted that, “most states are incapable of servicing their debt in the next 50 years”. In a statement issued over the weekend and made available to journalists in Abuja, he said:

Politics / Devalue Naira Now, FG Forex Policy Breeding Corruption – Fayose by lamzybaby: 2:49pm On Feb 21, 2016
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has called for the devaluation of the nation’s currency, the Naira, saying; “With the gap between the
official rate of N199 and open market rate of over N400 to one dollar, Naira has already been devalued. Therefore, President Mohammadu Buhari
must stop deceiving himself and short-changing Nigerians, especially States and Local Councils in the country with his Forex Policy.” Governor Fayose, who said there was no time in the history of Nigeria that the gap between dollar official rate and open market rate was more than N200, pointed out that it made no economic sense for the Federal Government to be calculating the country’s revenue on the basis of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official rate of N199 to a dollar while States and Local Councils that are sharing the revenue with the Federal Government run their businesses at the open market rate of over N400 to one dollar, thereby causing business to be folding up by the day and prices of goods skyrocketing everyday.

Politics / Ghost Workers: Pencom Boss, Bank Md In Trouble- Pilot Newspaper by lamzybaby: 11:33am On Feb 21, 2016
Managing Director of one the first generation banks, some top directors in the federal civil service as well as top
management staff of a pension commission are in deep trouble over alleged complicity in the
over bloated salary profile of civil servants.
Those affected, who are allegedly being investigated
by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission and other
anti-graft agencies, were said to
have been linked to the ghost
workers recently discovered in
the civil service.
Nigerian Pilot Sunday learnt
that the federal government
was dismayed that its effort
to eliminate ghost workers
in its payroll through the
Integrated Payroll Personnel
Information System, IPPIS,
was not only frustrated but
seriously compromised with the
aid of some banks working in
connivance with some directors
in the federal civil service.
In one instance, it was learnt
that an individual from one of the ministries opened a salary
account for 3000 workers, using
same name while another using
a convenience of a hotel room
had in conjunction with a senior
staff of one of the banks opened
salary accounts for thousands of
ghost workers.
Already, the Ministry of
Finance has discovered that no
fewer than 23,000 ghost workers
were discovered in the core
ministries while a lot more than
are suspected to have been found
out in the federal agencies and
parastatals, a development that
forced the Minister of Information
and National Orientation,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to raise
alarm that the IPPIS had been
compromised.
According to the minister,
the federal government has
instituted a machine to refine
the IPPPIS and ensure that it is
redesigned and made to function
to the desired expectation of the
government.
Minister of Finance, Ms Kemi
Adeosun, had blown the lip
on the salary scam in the civil
service while defending her
ministry’s 2016 budget before the
Senate Committee on Finance.
The minister had revealed that
though the Bank Verification
Number, BVN, and IPPIS had
helped the federal government
to discover 23,000 ghost workers
in the civil service, a lot still
needed to be done to totally
stamp out padded federal wage
bill through use of ghost workers
by some directors.
Also, the federal government,
according to sources, is worried
that the pension commission
has continued to remain a
fertile ground for financial
scam. It would be recalled the
commission had been embroiled
in a mess following the discovery
that some senior officials had
deeped their hands into the
tilt and corruptly enriched
themselves from the pension
proceeds of workers.
Though the EFCC had wielded
into the matter, nothing concrete
has been achieved since neither
the top staff implicated in the
case had been judiciously made
to pay for the alleged crime nor
has the trend been halted.
Accordingly, the federal
government is set to re-open the
case in addition to prosecuting
new cases which are currently
being investigated. It was in the
light of these that the Director-
General of the National Pension
Commission, Chinelo Anohu-
Amazu, was summoned to the
Minister of Finance for some
discussions, on Thursday.
The Special Adviser to
the Minister of Finance on

Foreign Affairs / BREAKING: Donald Trump Has Won South Carolina’s Republican Primary by lamzybaby: 1:38am On Feb 21, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Donald Trump has won South Carolina’s primary, cementing his status as a formidable front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump's big win in a deeply religious southern state shows that his tough talk, penchant for controversy and hardline immigration views outweighs his past social liberalism with enough voters — and keep him in the driver's seat for the nomination, with a series of Deep South states set to vote in the coming weeks

Trump won the state after a wild week in which he exchanged in a war of words with Pope Francis, attacked former President George W. Bush for not preventing the 9/11 attacks, repeatedly threatened a lawsuit against Ted Cruz over an attack ad he didn't like, and called for a boycott of Apple because of their fight against a court order to write new code to unlock a terrorists's cell phone.

US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has narrowly won the Nevada caucuses in the Democratic race for presidential nominee. She is leading with 52% of the vote over her rival Bernie Sanders’ 48%. She had been hoping for a big victory in Nevada where she is popular with Hispanic and minority voters. The Republican primary is also under way in South Carolina, where frontrunner Donald Trump is trying to fend off Texas Senator Ted Cruz. The votes could be key ahead of the “Super Tuesday” round on 1 March. On that day, about a dozen states will choose their Republican and Democratic contenders for the 8 November presidential election, with about a quarter of all nominating delegates up for grabs.

Politics / I Have No Plans To Join APC- Ex Gov. Ali Modu Sheriff by lamzybaby: 12:30pm On Feb 16, 2016
By: Peter OSSAGIE, Abuja
Former Borno state Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff has described those linking him with moves to dump nthe Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as being mischievous.
Sheriff told our correspondent shortly after he attended the inauguration of Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State for a second tenure, that he has not been approached to dump PDP for APC, and he is comfortable where he is, and has never contemplated leaving the party.
According to him, he joined the PDP in the first place because he was dissatisfied with certain developments in the APC, even as one of its founding fathers, and there is nothing more appealing in the APC to warrant his return, now that he has found an alternative home.
He said he was in Bayelsa state as a mark of solidarity with his party man, and it sounded rather absurd that he was being rumoured to be moving to the APC at a time he was busy networking with others to reposition the PDP for the days ahead.
“I am at peace in the PDP. I have no cause to dump the party, because I have been working with other fellow party men to revive the PDP and present a rebranded party for Nigerians by the next round of elections. I left the APC for a cause and the causes that made me to leave in the first place are still in the APC, so there is no truth in the rumours”, he asserted.
“My attendance of the swearing ceremony of Governor Seriake Dickson, who is in the same party with me is enough evidence that I am still in the PDP, and I will work for its success” Sheriff added, noting that, he knows those where such rumours may be coming from, judging by the medium that first carried it, but will not join issues with them because they are not of his class politically.

Politics / My Hands Are Clean”, Badeh Tells EFCC- Nationaltrail Newspaper by lamzybaby: 9:41am On Feb 15, 2016
Former Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh (Rtd), has told the Economic and Financial crimes Commission, EFCC, that his hands are clean as far as the alleged offences committed, while he was in charge as Chief of Air Staff and later Chief of Defence Staff, are concerned.
Badeh who honoured an invitation by the EFCC, to clarify certain grey areas in the ongoing investigations into alleged irregular procurements in the Armed Forces under his watch, told the Commission that, as much as he is willing to assist in all facets of the investigation he personally has nothing to hide.
Dependable sources at the EFCC revealed that Chief Badeh has been under pressures from his interviewers to own up to some properties and to surrender part of his personal wealth even when nothing incriminating was found against him, all of which he declined.
Chief Badeh denied having any personal interest in any of the contracts, nor deriving any personal benefits from any, as he was not offered, neither did he demand for it.
Our source said the EFCC operatives were angry with the former pilot and decided to deny him bail, even as they are going ahead to charge him to court on Monday, in defiance of legal advises that there were no proofs that he had ever been compromised, throughout his tenure, either as Chief of Air Staff or the Chief of Defence Staff.
The former CDS who denied ownership of the properties being linked to him, maintained that, he never deliberately acted with corrupts intents in any particular purchase undertaken by the Air Force nor the Defence Headquarters, as all such activities under him shows that all purchases made did not only follow due processes, but they were duly delivered and acknowledged to have been received.
According to a reliable source, the EFCC has been under pressures to embarrass Badeh even if nothing incriminating is found against, which explains why he was detained and denied bail, and may be eventually charged to court on Monday.
Sources hinted last week that, he is being deliberately framed up by people whose toes he may have stepped upon while in office.

Politics / Boko Haram: Gov Shettima In Phantom War With Senator- Nationaltrail Newspaper by lamzybaby: 9:35am On Feb 15, 2016
How Agenda Was Set To Re-Echo Governor’s Earlier Views
Borno Citizens Allege Grand Deception, Insist Garbai Was Right

While Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima, may have succeeded in creating the impression that he is at war with the senator representing Borno central, in the Nigerian senate, Baba Kaka Garbai, over the later’s comments on Boko Haram, to the effect that the sect still occupies part of Borno state, emerging facts point to a phantom war nationalTrail exclusively gathered Garbai’s comment, which merely re-echoed Governor Shettima’s earlier position to the effect that the Military is ill motivated and equipped to contain Boko Haram, was actually an agenda setting move by the governor, to warm himself into the hearts of both President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief of Army Staff, General Yusuf Buratai, both of whom were reported to be unimpressed with his approach to issues concerning the fight against insurgency, especially the president who has refused to give him any listening ear.
Our correspondent was able to establish that, Governor Kashim Shettima and Senator Garbai are the best of friends, even outside politics, and it was not possible for the duo to take conflicting positions on such issues, as sensitive as Boko Haram.
Further findings reveal that the governor actually discussed the matter with the senator before the latter’s visit to Dalori, so that they can stir up the hornets’ nest, and depending on the reaction of the Federal Government and the Military, the governor will take his own position, disowning Senator Garbai, but by then the fact would have been stated.
Sources around the governor, confirmed to nationalTRAIL that all the grandstanding against Senator Garbai’s views was a façade, as the two have remained in constant touch long after the seeming quarrel or disagreement, and the senator has continued to speak well of Governor Shettima, even when the governor was being reported to have lampooned him at least in public.
Our correspondent reports that, the gullible public has been vehement in supporting Garbai’s position, while a few others hailed Governor Shettima, but the truth remains that, Garbai’s views were the correct reflection of Governor Shettima’s position on the insurgency fight.
Vice Chairman of the Peoples democratic Party, PDP in the state, Mbursa Gabassa, told nationalTRAIL in an interview that the Borno State Government has not been truthful about the situation in the state, and often misleads the Federal Government and the military in making unconvincing remarks that are always controverted unfolding by events.
nationalTRAIL had earlier reported that Governor Kashim Shettima, may have perfected strategies to distract rehabilitation efforts of the Presidential Committee on displaced persons, by deliberately creating controversies about the true situation in some local governments, which from very clear indications have not been totally liberated.
Investigations further revealed that, shortly after making his remarks and the attendant response by governor Shettima, the senator quickly recoiled, and declined further comments, while the governor continued, emphasising his outburst against Garbai, creating the impression that he is in tandem with the views of the Federal Government, which claims to have decimated the Boko Haram insurgents.
It is rather ironical, critics say, that at the time the federal Government was busy making claims of having recovered all occupied territories, Boko Haram has tended to be more vehement sacking towns and villages on the fringes of Maiduguri, the state capital, even as the sect seems to be acting contrary to the claims being made.
A cross section of Borno citizens who spoke to our correspondent insist that, there may be a grand deception to shield the truth of what is happening in Borno State from President Muhammadu Buhari, even as others cautioned the Presidency from buying into a propaganda war, without verifying the truth about the situation in some of the local governments alleged to still be under threat by Boko Haram.

Politics / Presidency Reacts To Brouhaha Over Telegraph Interview-pilot Newspaper by lamzybaby: 10:31pm On Feb 09, 2016
The State House has described as misconstrued, the various interpretations of President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments in an interview granted to the UK’s Telegraph newspaper on February 5, 2016.

In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, February 9, Malam Garba Shehu (Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity) noted that the wave of negative reactions to the President’s remarks about the reputation of Nigerians abroad was as a result of an incomplete understanding of President Buhari’s point.

“President Buhari was asked about the flood of migrants from Nigeria and the fraudulent applications for asylum put in by people desperate to leave their motherland at any cost, and it was this question that elicited his response,” he said, encouraging Nigerians to avail themselves of a full text of the interview, which has now been made available on the Telegraph’s website.

Malam Shehu added that it was preposterous for anyone to imagine that the President of Nigeria would describe all the citizens of the country he leads as criminals, when he himself is a Nigerian–obviously not a criminal–and when there are many Nigerians of honest living making their country proud all over the world.

ree also Nigerians giving their country a bad image abroad, and it is to those Nigerians that the President referred in his comments,” he said, adding that people may play politics and online games with the President’s comments, but the fact of the matter remains that Nigeria’s reputation abroad has been severely damaged by her own citizens.

“These Nigerians who leave their country to go and make mischief on foreign shores have given the rest of us a bad reputation that we daily struggle to overcome.”

Malam Shehu called attention to the many efforts of President Buhari to clean up the image of Nigeria, such as the war on corruption, stating that acknowledging you have a problem is the first step to preferring a solution.

“President Buhari is very aware of the problems the people of Nigeria face both at home and abroad, and he is not shying away from admitting them even as he focuses on solutions to bring them to a permanent end.”

Politics / Badeh May Spend Night At EFCC- National Trail Newspaper by lamzybaby: 10:32pm On Feb 08, 2016
In apparent confirmation of earlier reports that the EFCC is poised to embarrass for Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, indications emerged that he night at the commission’s office.
Sources from the EFCC confirmed to our correspondent that, the issues seeking clarification from the Former CDS could not be exhausted at just one sitting, and is expected to continue tomorrow.
It was curious why he was not allowed to report from his house as was the case last week, but sources hinted that his stay at the EFCC overnight may not be unconnected with earlier reports that he was billed to be embarrassed for yet unknown reasons.
Badeh who has been at the anti graft agency office clarifying issues related to alleged inappropriate procurements under his watch was asked to report back to the EFCC today, Monday, when the commission could not finalise logistics for his interview with their men Wednesday last week.
Our source confirmed that Badeh was informed that he may have to stay at the commission’s office overnight, to continue the interaction with EFCC operatives tomorrow.
News had filtered in Sunday that there were plans to embarrass the former CDS, as he arrives the EFCC premises Monday. It was not immediately clear if asking him to stay the night was not unconnected with the reported moves.
Badeh arrived the EFCC headquarters in company of some of his associates and domestic staff and was immediately ushered into a waiting room where officers from the agency were already waiting, and the interrogations commenced almost immediately.
Our source said the operatives could not however exhaust the issues they wanted clarified by the former CDS before adjourning.

Politics / Plans To Embarrass Badeh At EFCC Exposed- National Trail Newspaper by lamzybaby: 4:46pm On Feb 08, 2016
By Sam ADEGBE, Abuja

Former Chief of Defence staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh who last week honoured the invitation by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will again be at the headquarters of the anti-graft agency on Monday.
Badeh was asked to go back and return Monday to enable the commission meet up some logistic requirements.
We reliably gathered however that there are moves to thoroughly embarrass the former CDS when he arrives the EFCC headquarters. Our source revealed that certain things are being lined up against him, outside the speculated charges to confront him with, since there appears no case that can stand in the court against him.
Alex Badeh is expected to make clarifications on alleged improper procurements made under his watch as Chief of Defence staff, but was asked to return on Monday, apparently for no substantial evidence established against him in the award of contracts in the controversial arms deal.

Politics / APC, PDP Heading For Implosions- National Trail Newspaper by lamzybaby: 4:34pm On Feb 08, 2016
Intra Party War Pitches Buhari/Tinubu/Atiku Groups
PDP Convulses As Notches Fight To Escape Emasculation
NASS Polarised As Senators Re-enact War Over Saraki

The leadership and parties concerned may deny the existence of any rift, but it is common knowledge that all is not well with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as top notches of the party fight for the control of its soul ahead of the 2019 elections, nay the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has been convulsing since it lost the 2015 elections.
The APC has been scheming to emasculate the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but political analyst are already predicting that both the APC and its arch rival, PDP may be heading for implosions in the face of emergent power tussles and seeming irreconcilable differences amongst key stakeholders.
Already, the APC is engulfed in crisis at several state levels, with stakeholders polarised along pro Muhammadu Buhari, pro Bola Tinubu, or pro Atiku Abubakar camps, with each trying to undo the other by hijacking the party hierarchy, even as top notches of the PDP fight hard to revive their battered home.
Investigations reveal that, while parties in the coalition that gave birth to the APC are already seeking for alternative partners against 2019, some prominent members of the PDP are deserting the party en-masse, while others have been reported to be mulling the idea of a name change as well as logo for the PDP, following its defeat in the 2015 election; the shock of which they are yet to recover from.
Recent reports indicate that, the salient war between President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu on one hand, and between the President and Atiku Abubakar on the other have started to manifest openly and that may cost the APC a lot of fortunes, given that, the duo of Atiku and Tinubu, may be forced out of the APC, if President Buhari insists on running for a second term.
nationalTRAIL gathered that, people close to President Muhammadu Buhari, have been ruminative over the reference being made to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the National Leader of the APC, and not the President, while the party constitution confers leadership of the APC on Governors at the State level. To them, it is inappropriate to regard Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the national leader, which has tended to give him powers to manipulate party decisions at the expense of Buhari’s interests.
Analyst are of the view that, the President had dropped many ministerial nominees believed to have been picked by Tinubu, even so, the denial of James Faleke to take over as Governor of Kogi State following the death of Prince Abubakar Audu, even as Audu’s running mate may not be unconnected with the tussle between the two APC leaders, knowing Falake to be Tinubu’s man.
Atiku Abubakar who has never hidden his ambition to run in 2019, may be compelled to seek for an alternative platform should Tinubu maintain control of the party leadership at the National level, and may be tempted to take out his pound of flesh against President Buhari in 2019 in his fight to actualise his long time ambition.
Several actions of the President, point to the fact that, he is bent on asserting his hold onto the leadership of the APC, as references being made to Tinubu as the national leader of the party has often made him uncomfortable just like his followers. The battle of making Buhari as President, the national leader is certainly going to be resisted within the party.
At the state level, the APC in Kaduna, Kwara, Kogi, Kano, Lagos, Kebbi, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti and Imo States, are sharply divided along loyalty to either the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, each of who are battling to take control of the soul of the party. With President Buhari fighting to secure his second term, Atiku Abubakar fighting to upstage the President in 2019, and Tinubu seeking to maintain hold on party, the stage seems set for the battle.
nationalTRAIL findings reveal that, in Kaduna, Governor Nasiru el-Rufai, is slugging it out with Senator Shehu Sani, as Buhari’s man, Governor Kashim Shettima fights to undo Mustapha Baba Shehuri: a Buhari associate, while Governor Bindau Jibrilla and Atiku Abubakar struggles against former Governor Murtala Nyako and his group, Governor Yahaya Bello fights the mainstream APC in Kogi, even as Governor Abdullahi Ganduje is said to be at daggers drawn with his erstwhile boss, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso. Fayemi and Fashola are seen as slipping through Bola Tinubu’s fingers, just as Dakuku Peterside now sees Rotimi Amaechi as an enemy.
Sources told our correspondent that, even the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo does not seem to enjoy the absolute confidence of President Buhari any longer, because of his closeness to Tinubu, ditto some of the ministers whose appointments were at Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s instrumentality, or Atiku Abubakar’s instance.
Buhari who proceeded on a five day vacation last week is said to still be dictating the pace of activities, even after handing over to his vice to act in his absence because of the seeming suspicion that has crept into the alliance. Some people feel that the President’s vacation may not be unconnected with some developments that may unfold in the country, which his trip may provide an alibi against.
nationalTRAIL reports that, politicians, especially serving and former Governors, senators and members of the House of Representatives; irrespective of their political leanings may have commenced moves to massively drift into a new party, preferably into an already existing weak party and use same as their new platform, against the APC and the PDP, which may only exist in name by 2019.
A meeting of like minds in Dubai recently, which was followed by another one in Kaduna and later at a private residence in Abuja, may have already drawn a blueprint for the emergence of a mega party, that can emasculate both the APC and the PDP.
These developments are coming at a time the National Assembly, particularly the Senate is engulfed in its own fresh crisis following last week’s verdict by the Supreme Court which ordered Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, to face the Code Of Conduct Tribunal over alleged false declaration of assets, with Senators resuming the battle over leadership, in the event Saraki throws in the towel, or is shown the way out.
Bukola Saraki, is the arrowhead of an alliance between some APC and PDP Senators, which emerged in the heat of the leadership crisis that bedeviled the National Assembly at inception. That group has remained together, and is working to ensure own survival in the unfolding political quagmire.
Reports indicate that the embattled Senate President has come under fresh pressures to throw in the towel, and concentrate on his trial, a development that may throw the red chamber back into the leadership tussle that held up its activities for months, when Saraki and other principal officers of the senate were nominated against the preferences of the powers that be.
Our correspondent reports that, senators are divided along pro Saraki and pro Ahmed Lawan groups, with the later insisting that the Senate President must vacate his seat on moral grounds, to, pave way for the election of another set of leaders for the red chamber, while Saraki’s group fights back.
Feelers indicate that the coming together of the Bukola Saraki/ Yakubu Dogara groups in the National Assembly with the disgruntled elements in the executive could set the stage for the implosions of both the APC and the PDP, and the emergence of a new alliance.
