zhayyd039: Chapter 1: *Seven Years Later "Hey, mate. How is the army treating you?" he said over the bluetooth device in his ear as he typed in commands on the computer. "Like hell, bro, like hell," the voice replied. "What are you doing, awake at this hour?" "Same thing you are doing." "What do you think I'm doing?" "I don't know, studying?" "I'm on midnight f*cking shift, in the cold!" the voice exclaimed. "Well, I'm working on some projects to submit early tomorrow morning." "Ah, Jamal. The university thing isn't really your thing. There's space for you here, you know," the voice said. When he heard no reply, he continued, "We could make use of your brains here. Quality brains are a rare gem." "You know why I left, Kelvin. I couldn't stand the pressure," Jamal said flatly. "Pressure," Kelvin scoffed. "Like I said before, you were just scared of not being able to live up to the standards your dad set when he was there." "Well now he's dead. Was it all worth it?" "Jamal, we grew up together. We're basically like brothers, I would always be there for you, mate." "Cheers. Look who's getting all emotional," joked Jamal. "Ha-ha, I'm serious, man." "Hey, I gotta run. Projects and stuff." "Go on, have at it then, schoolboy." And the line went dead. Jamal dropped the phone and sighed, leaning back on his chair and rubbing his eyes with both hands. After a few minutes he stood up and headed for the shower, but not before making a stop at the mirror to admire his five feet eight, athletic body which he got after passing through rigorous training at the preliminary military training program. Jamal was the son of one of the brightest fighters and minds the Nigerian Army ever produced, Bashir Riyad. He set several standards during his time there and also improved the efficiency of the army. He died on a mission seven years ago. A mission he insisted on going to help stop a terrorist group. This made Jamal drop out of military school and despise it. Jamal's mother divorced his father when he was just five, which left him to grow up with a military background and training. Now at twenty-two and in his second year in the university with only his uncle Faruk for support, Jamal strived to make a name for himself. He didn't take long in the shower before coming out and heading downstairs. After his father's death, his uncle decided to move in to help ease the burden. But it was not easy as the uncle too was a military man before retiring and becoming a security consultant. Money was never an issue for Jamal. As he reached the end of the stairs, he saw the sitting room lights on. I was enjoying your story still am, though I'm still at the beginning. I saw your initial comment about cultural differences but let me say this I was shocked when I read "Nigerian army" in this part of the story. Their conversation was totally American. I am not in the army but I am sure our soldiers don't speak like that. That's not being against cultural differences, that's cultural misplacement. Sorry if I was too harsh. 1 Like |

Zico5: Is that what matter to u right now. Even what make it sure that u will see the 2023. U guys are so myopic and self centered. It's like the whole of the country resources should belong to u alone. Get it to ur brain today, IGBO can never rule this country cos everyone knows ur motives. We will never put fire on the building and sleep. I was about agreeing with you after reading the poster who said 'Igbo 2023' but from the middle of your comment you just come off as nepotist. I ain't Igbo but I want u to answer these. Why won't the Igbos rule again? What is this their motive that u know which the rest of us aren't privy too? Pls let's avoid colouring our judgement with ethnicity. |

Politics › Tribe Blindness by laphta(op): 10:50pm On Apr 24, 2016 |
Tribe Blindness Racism. What is it? It is the overreaching of concepts, artificial standards or cultural beliefs which are engraved into our unconscious or conscious such that they give particular alternatively normal actions a meaning that envelopes a message of superiority on the person/persons who are being acted upon. It is “Tom Cruise” telling “Jamie Foxx”, ‘No, thank you.’, but Jamie Foxx hearing ‘Get your black ass out of my face.’ Trust me, only the 2 of them know what Tom “really” said. But I am black, an African in an African country in the continent from which man evolved. And from all indications Racism doesn’t exist in my country, Nigeria, or does it. My good friend eats roughly, not caring how many of his fingers get stained or how the food looks like while eating or how to clean up the plate after eating. He just eats, ‘Bi omo mola.’ Or how in my former room, I couldn’t do something right and my roommates were like, ‘Se Egun ni e ni?’ I also remember when I was planning to get a shop to sell particular stuff, some people told me, ‘Do not use an Ibo person as your salesperson, you have been warned.’ I was working in a particular school at a certain period and I heard my Edo boss saying ‘Yoruba people, hypocrites all of them, they smile with you then stab you in the back.’ His friend replied, ‘Yes oo, you can’t trust them.’ Now I am trying to remember when a tribe’s name became an item of abuse, or when particular tribes became attached to particular vices like a camel to its hump. Are we racists? No. This is because there is no recognized ethnic stratification system and no tribe is conventionally accepted as top with the remaining tribes in a particular order. But are we ethnocentric? Of course. Since the Yorubas are the best because they are actually smarter than the rest, or the Ibos are the best because they can make money out of thin air or the Hausas are the best because they were made for power and power for them. Yes, rep your tribe. No, your tribe isn’t better. So when dealing with local or national issues, please be ‘Tribe Blind’ because being bright eyed only pushes up stereotypes that are actually only empty. |

Christianity Etc › What Is Your Definition Of Truth? by laphta(op): 6:01am On Nov 20, 2014 |
I partook in a hell of an argument yesterday on truth. I stood on the grounds that when looking at things from all premises, there is nothing like absolute truth. What we know as truth is limited to our knowledge base and our perspective. White is white to everyone because we see it as white, it might be that light plays tricks on us and a particular shade of yellow is always reflected as white, that's just an assumption. I think I am right. But I need someone to prove me wrong because my interpretation is toxic to many things I feel to be true.i.e in reality. Am I right? |
