BlueRayDick: See ehn, there are better ways of doing the job of a government's spokesperson. It doesn't necessarily need to be about u going combative with the other party.
NLC and TUC are labour unions ; Like them or hate them, their existence is guaranteed by labor laws and u will always have to deal with them on workers welfare. There's no need to start making it seem like u are ready to spar with them in a combat.
A spokesperson to government should be telling a story that the government is trying its best to have the grievances of the workers addressed. Simple! This is not a time to be playing politics since we all agreed the government cannot afford to allow the strike to linger too long. Are you just knowing Bayo Onanuga? I'm surprised you are surprised by his statement. What he is doing is what he is paid to do. |

BlueRayDick: He never put mouth, Bayo Onanuga said NLC and TUC are members of labour party so they are only playing politics. By the time Obi put mouth, dem fit talk say na him call Ajaero on phone to declare strike
They will be acting as if they are not in this country seeing how people are suffering They are government spokesperson now, what do you expect them to say really? They'll try to deflect from the issue on ground, it's what they are paid for. |

Theflint1: Thing is I don't think labor can really do much in driving policy decisions bordering on the economy and inflation like you're suggesting they do, and that's because their primary goal is workers welfare that gives immediate results i.e. salary increase, reduced working hours, etc. The best labor can do is what they're currently doing.
The person that can drive policy that sees to the long-term benefit of workers is the government and you'd expect that when they're formulating these policies labor would be part of those deliberations. So far Tinubu has not shown he has any long-term plans for workers in place, so the best we can expect from this strike is salary increase which the results would last no more than 3 years and for only a subset of the general population. I'm not asking labor to drive any policy on inflation or anything. If you go back to the genesis of the argument it's a video interview of a man on channels. My argument is that Labor must insist on the govt increasing minimum wage for the survival of the citizens while they can now continue to pressure the government to work to reduce inflation, provide affordable housing and all. Those are medium/long term solution. Workers need instant solution to be able to survive which is increasing minimum wage. |

BlueRayDick: This country ehn....The funny thing is even if minimum wage is increased sef, it might take more than a year for government to start paying it. That is another battle waiting ahead Any minimum wage that's agreed upon must be implemented immediately. That should be one if labor demand. |

BlueRayDick: The doctors always get their demands met no matter how long it takes. That's where NLC is taking their cue from now.
If u say u expected NLC to shut down the country, this is exactly what shutting down the country looks like. The seaports are currently shut down, airports, electricity , etc. That is the only way u can get the govt to take u serious.
If u think blockade of National Assembly , state government secretariat will achieve anything , that means u've not been paying close attention to happenings in this country.
If u don't do something as drastic as this to embarrass the government, they won't bulge. When doctors strike, I hope you know it doesn't affect all other healthcare workers (if I'm wrong unlimited22 and afrodoc2 should correct me please). Nurses, lab technicians and the likes still go to work even when doctors are on strike only that you wont be able to meet with doctors. But when you shutdown hospital, all health workers wont be on ground. There's a huge difference between both of the situation o. |

Government secretariats that resume by 9am and by 3, dem don dey click on the Start button on their system to shut down? Na dem go happy pass sef.
But he is right about losing the people, if the strike bites harder[/color] The govt will even respond faster when you attack their source of revenue than any other thing. These guys care about money than any other thing and the best way to hurt them is to attack them their money. There's a reason why when ND militants started attacking pipelines the govt took them serious and till now doctors still dey go on strike, lives are being lost and na still the same thing. |

liveLongNprospa: We are actually at war with the FG. Its how you choose to look at it. The workers have graded their grievance to be on the highest scale and they are showing it hence the numerous support NLC and TUC is getting. . Question is, do you think the anger of workers is also justified for this reaction? Na FG dey hospital or what? I dont even understand what you are saying. Grind the economy to a halt, shut down the port where they are getting money, ensure no tanker load oil, that's how you hurt them where it hurt them the most - money. This one na self sabotage and the bulk of those that will be at the receiving end of it are ordinary citizens. |

BlueRayDick: Do u know the rate at which people die during doctors' strike when there's no war ?
I am not saying that the people should be allowed to die, but it has been proven over time that the only way to get FG's attention is to force their hand in this manner. The government has been insincere and less commital on this minimum wage issue since the past one year.
If NLC don't take some of these critical measures, the strike will just go the way of every other strike since the last few years of Buhari till this moment. The strike will just die down and everybody will continue the way things are. While flogging NLC for taking an extreme position, you should also flay FG for their own failures too Since morning I've been flaying the govt for their own nonsense. I am 100% in support of strike. Infact if you remember our discussion about Ajaero some weeks back, I said NLC suppose don shut down the country. Shut down the country but leave critical infrastructure like power and hospitals alone. It's a no brainers. Doctors have been going on strike since and people have been dieing, what has changed? |

Wetin concern hospital or electricity and labor wey dey strike? Shey na person wey dey hospital bed wey need urgent medical attention na him wan force government to do anything? BlueRayDick: The thing is most Nigerians are oblivious of some realities happening in this very naija that we live in.
I remember the last doctors strike when we had an appointment at LASUTH, that was the first time I understood how terrible doctors strike can be and yet govt just gloss over it. People on admission were literally left unattended. Those of us that brought our patients from home had to take them back and wait indefinitely till the strike was called off. U can't see specialists even for the most threatening conditions that required urgent medical care. Those that will die from shutting down from the hospital are who? Theres a reason why they are called essential critical infrastructure. Even during war, targeting hospital are called crimes against humanity. |

Nigerians have sacrificed enough..The average Nigerian cannot continue to be "reasonable" only for the government to continue in their deceit.. Itsrm: As someone else noted on twitter. Where have all these people been when doctors and medical workers have been going on strike?
This is what NLC should have even done when subsidy was removed. If they had, it won't matter if minimum wage is only increased to 40,000. Why? So electricity and hospital are essential infrastructure, lots of people need both to survive. Labor should shut down govt office and secretariat. How the electricity wan take affect politicians wey dey house? No be me and you go suffer ham? Abi no be common man dey our hospital dey. If Labor continue like this, the way they will lose public support will surprise you. |

BlueRayDick: It can be argued that AMCON has outlived its usefulness because it was actually set up to restructure the banking sector by buying non performing loans of the banks so FG can take over such banks.....But it can also be argued that the banking sector reform though yielding positive fruits is still not where it ought to be.
I think CBN needs to be more proactive before AMCON is disbanded. This Heritage bank liquidation should not be happening if CBN had upped their game. There's nothing the CBN will do to save that bank if their operations is not sustainable or them don run ham to the ground. Sometimes its better to just wind it up than postponing the inevitable. |

BlueRayDick: Well, the AMCON route would've saved depositors funds and maybe shareholders too, but it will add more debt to AMCON's portfolio which is actually not good for the general public.
I also have a feeling that there might be some political considerations. NB: I am not saying this for a fact o, but I have a feeling that let's say Saraki was still the senate president or has some goodwill with with the current government; Just maybe somebody will put in word for him and the AMCON route may have been explored. AMCON itself should be disbanded. It has outlived its usefulness. |

But my question is why didn't CBN step in earlier ? At least to save some ordinary shareholders?
Since SS1 when we did Economics and we were taught that ordinary shareholders are the least priority when a company winds down; na since that time I no like buying shares as form of investment. Funny enough, my popsy likes shares more than anything. BlueRayDick: This CBN statement is kinda confusing.
I remember attending a trianing few years ago and one of the facilitator being a senior official at NDIC was discussing about Risk-based approach to regulation of financial institutions. He said CBN and NDIC had adopted a Risk-based approach to regulating banks and that no bank in Nigeria can fail because one of the merits of the approach is that before a bank fails they would've arrested the situation and save shareholders and depositor's funds. He said that was why banks like Polaris were taken over by CBN when they nearly failed.
But this one now with CBN revoking Heritage bank instead of taking over the bank and selling it to investors. Does it mean Heritage bank is beyond redemption? Yes now, it was said in the press release that there was no path for recovery for the bank. The next sensible thing is to wind it up instead of chasing shadow. |

For example now pepper is very very expensive.
