orapwd file=password_file_name password=the_secret_password
orapwd file=password_file_name password=the_secret_password entries=n

There is a default location and name for password files. When a password file is created, it should be created in that location.
n specifies the maximum number of distinct DBAs and OPERs that can be stored in the password file.
orapwd is a command line tool to create password files.

no all you have to do now is grant the neccessary privilege

GUI VS CMD

the fact is that you can even do more using the command prompt than using the GUI, you don't always have to type all your script when you need them, you could always make them down b4 using them and allyou need to do b4 execution is edit some things thats all. but oracle 10g still recommends us to use the em cdbconsole when creating a database but i guess am just being stubborn. but really its for you own goo to learn how touse the cmd.

well i don't think where you study matters, what matters is if you know what you are doing, although people who don't have any idea of what oracle is should be at a place like NIIT, but still NIIT certificate is not what i am after, am after the real stuff and knowlege.

i hope you computer meets specifications for oracle 10g installation, well you know it's definately hard to help you from out here, it will have to be a hand-on-lab stuff and since no errors are generated that even makes it more difficult to troubleshoot the problem.

no it's not that the yahoo boys can't be traced the fact is that we don't just have the resources ok,

and am sure you must have heard of NAT, yeah thats the reason we haven't ran out of IPv4 addresses, which makes it even harder to locate the machine, but the fact is that we don't have the resources for such things, but we have the money to implement them.

hey to all my DBA gees and gurls out there, pls try as much as possible to always use you CMD, a dba just got fired in one of south africa's biggest it organisations for voilating his service level agreements (SLA) his max MTTR was 25 minutes i guess the OEM failed him and he couldn't use the black box, so instead of him using all his time to recover the DB, half or rather of his time was used trying to invoke. http//127.0.0.1:550/em

thanks

well let me tell you guys something,

if your GUI fails you, then you cmd will not, (black box)

but as for me i prefer using the cmd, i don't see the gui as a means to make administration more easy i see it as making us more lazy, but there are some cases where you are recommended to use the gui, like when creating a database and executing pl/sql codes but i always love doing it the hard way, sorry guys maybe am just being stubborn.

but you must know that you gui will fail you someday, so be warned.

ComputersRe: Oracle DBA Corner by larryoncol(m): 6:22pm On Mar 26, 2007
sbucarrer :

just to let you know, it isn't possible to have to instances on the same machine, running at the same time ok.

each oracle database has it's own instance, so when you change the enviromental variable to another database the instance of that database becomes stale while the one for the open database starts running.

The only case where you have multiple instances on different nodes opening a single database is when you use RAC(real application clusters) in this case you can have like 9 instances opening one database so that if one of the instances should go down you database can still be open beacsue you have other instances working onbehalf of that database. RAC is used for database availabilty, in an oragnisation where downtime cannot be tollorated RAC can be very useful

thanks

ComputersRe: Oracle DBA Corner by larryoncol(m): 6:16pm On Mar 26, 2007
ok two databases running on the same system, well it depends on the database that you want to log into

for example you have two databases on a system ORA1 and ORA2

if you want to log into ORA1 then you have to change the enviromental variable ORACLE_SID

here's how you do it when you are on the command prompt make sure you have logged out.

so your prompt should look something like ]

C:/Documents amd Setting/oracle

now just type in this command to change the enviromental variable

C:/Documents amd Setting/ set oracle_sid=ORA1

then you can now log in

sqlplus

sys as sysdba

e.t.c

if you do not set the variable a TNS Protocol adaptar error will be generated

the anytime you want to log into the ORA2 database you will have to change the enviromental variable again

set oracle_sid=ORA2

i hope you understood

ProgrammingRe: Networking by larryoncol(m): 6:09pm On Mar 26, 2007
there's always one thing that matters when it lcome to networking, and that is bandwidth,

so it's either you have your dedicated connection or you are connecting thru a teleco, that is company that are willing to offer you bandwidth for money, hope you get the point, it all involves hardware and software,

routers importantly cannot make remote connections there are also different protocols involved in wide area networking, for example a dedicated T1 or E1 connection is going to cost you more money beacsue you will have more bandwidth to your disposal, this is also what we call PPP (point to point) in a router configuration, but if you can't affored so much money the n you could use frame relay or ISDN any one of this become cheaper because you plan on consuming less bandwidth.

ProgrammingRe: Tracking Position Via The Internet by larryoncol(m): 4:07pm On Mar 26, 2007
subcarrer i totally understnd what you are trying to say, but you must be aware that in a country like Nigeria or system have not been fully integrated, yeah for example now you where able to the person name thru the site he logged into, and if the so called person isn't in the cafe his name can be runed thru a central database that can provide more info on whom this person is, like his name, address e,t.c but in a place like nigeria even if i used my real name and you found that out thru the site that i logged in, you wouldn't still be able to round me up becasue you have no idea on how you can locate me right, more or less we have no database so how do you know who i am,

i hope you get my point, thses things work in developed countries,

by the way i would like to talk to you, personally so i was kinda wondering if i could have your email addy.

thanks

DETERMINED:

i do not really agree on you with that on ok, if i where to give anyone an advice on any database course to hold onto it would be oracle becasue we both know that when it come to RDBMS it ORACle for now. i am very well into databses i have done my oca and studied my ocp, designed database's for a few people. the fact is for some one who really understand oracle, you can work with any other database, don't you agree with me,.
