Some rights groups in the Niger Delta region on Saturday warned against the nomination of persons with vested personal interest into the proposed dialogue team with the federal government towards resolving the current hostilities in the region.

In a joint statement issued by the leaders of the Niger Delta Security Watch Organisation of Nigeria, Ijaw Human Rights Monitors, Ijaw People Development Initiative and Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade, said only stakeholders with an unblemished track records with genuine interest for the region should be drawn into the team.

It also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately call for a stakeholders’ meeting in the region where issues concerning the region would be genuinely discussed and solutions be recommended.

The statement signed by Dickson Bekederemo (NDSWON), Fred Brisibe (IHRM), Austin Ozobo (IPDI) and Alaowei Cleric warned against turning the dialogue into a political jamboree by selecting people with self-seeking interest rather than those with concern for the region.
