The University of Lagos Student Union (ULSU) is spoiling for a showdown with management of the institution. The university’s management through a circular issued by the Senate had shut down the school indefinitely and ordered students to vacate their hostels by 10am, April 8, 2016. Unilag protest In a counter move however, ULSU Executive has asked students to stay put. They are to remain where there are, pending further information from the student body. A statement circulated among students reads: “FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS UNION It is unfortunate that despite priding itself as the university of first choice and the nation’s pride, the University of Lagos Management cannot manage this simple issue. The Vice Chancellor has demonstrated his insouciance towards the welfarism of the students. Despite his availability on campus today, he refused to avail the students of his presence. In light of this public display of irresponsibility, the Union wishes to state that: 1) It is an inhumane move with a dastardly motive to demand the vacation of students from the University community. This is because it has got to the notice of the Union that certain hoodlums are around the school to waylay students who are trying to leave the school. 2) Also, students who leave in distant areas have confessed that they do not have transport fare to transport themselves home. This is understandable as the notice for vacation just got to students this morning at about 6:30, leaving us with less than 4hrs to vacate. This is a display of lower drunkenness and gross irresponsibility on the part of the VC and the University Management as a whole. They have displayed that they do not have the interest kg the students at heart. They have shown that they are misfits with regard to parenthood. Hence, we implore the students to stay in school so that they won’t be victims of circumstances. Hoodlums are everywhere and leaving the school now is dangerous. The Union is on top of the situation. All students should remain indoors until further information from the Union. SIGNED: ULSU EXCOS” Our correspondent reports that student leaders have perfected plans to deal with the fallout of this imminent showdown. It remains to be seen however, what would happen next because the deadline issued by the institution’s management has elapsed and students are still in the various halls of residence. Tayo Agbede is one photographer that brings passion and dedication to his chosen career. Tayo is a 2014 graduate of Accounting from the prestigious University of Lagos (Unilag). A native of Akoko South-West local government in Ondo State, he is the last in the family of seven. Tayo’s passion for his work comes from his strong Christian background which, according to him, has also shaped other aspects of his life, including how he runs TY Photo and Video Productions. In this interview by Tunde Odutade (TeeDee) and Bukunmi Solomon (Kumbis), Tayo’s passion for the art of photography is laid bare. What drew you to photography and how did you start? The Passion to explore the world of images drew me into Photography. Growing up, I had the fortune of owning a small camera. I took this camera with me everywhere I went, especially to school, where I took photos of my friends, and ever since that time, my passion for photography grew day after day. I started professional photography in 2009 when I got admission into Unilag. What were the difficulties you first encountered when you started? I prefer to call it challenges, not difficulties because you encounter challenges in order to become a better person. The major challenges I had then were strange reactions from photographers who I tried to associate with to gather more ideas in the field. I must confess to you, most of their reactions were not always welcoming. They tended to keep their ideas to themselves and they believe they know it all. Who taught you the nifty aspects of photography? Pastor Sanmi Agbede. He is my elder brother and a Minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). He gave me the nitty-gritty of what photography is all about and he bought me my first professional camera. Your professional name is ‘TY Photo’, how did you come by that name? The brand name TY photo was derived from my name ‘Oyetayo’. If you remove the prefix ‘Oye’, you have ‘Tayo’. The abbreviated form of ‘Tayo’ is ‘TY’ and since many people know and address me as ‘TY’ already, I took it as my brand name. What kind of events do you handle? All kinds of events… weddings, birthday, modelling shoots, naming ceremonies, etc. You train people don’t you? Yes. I train people both in photography and videography. Currently, I have five people undergoing apprenticeship in the art of producing images using both still and video camera. What will it cost to learn photography under you? Money is not the primary consideration here. If anyone wants to learn from me, the first thing to consider is that individual’s passion for the art of photography. Once I have established the presence of passion and enthusiasm, we can then go on to discuss duration and cost. What tools does someone who intends to go into Photography need to have? As I said earlier, the paramount thing is the passion and interest towards the job. Then other things What advice do you havefor photography enthusiasts who want to go professional? Prayer, focus and dedication are the fundamental principles to get there. Be passionate about the job. Love it and give it all you have got. When you look at the world of photography, a few famous names quickly come to mind. Who would you say is your role-model and how have you been influenced by this role model? I have more than one role-model, both home and abroad. The one closest to heart, however, is K. LALA. I love the work he is doing. I follow him closely on social media. I hope someday soon, I’ll meet him in person and say a big “thank you” for inspiring me. Another person who inspires me is TY Bello. How has the social media shaped your work? The social media has helped me immensely by putting me on the spotlight. It helps showcase what I do and has given me a wider audience. I do get bookings, calls and comments on different social platforms. In this age and time, the social media can’t be neglected. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I see myself becoming one of those renowned photographers you talked about earlier. Let’s come to your personal life. What is your favourite meal? As an Ondo guy, it is pounded yam and egusi soup. Are you married? No. I’m single, for the time being though. When are you getting married? Very soon, but TeeDee, allow me keep the cards to myself. I will certainly inform you guys at layreporta.com when the time comes…..laughs. What are your hobbies? Web surfing, cooking, traveling and watching football. Can you tell us about your most memorable day? The day of my convocation in Unilag was my most memorable day. You see, on that day, I went down memory lane, recalling the names of some of my colleagues who started but didn’t complete the program. The bible says, “It’s not of him who willeth nor he that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.” God has been merciful to me. The deal to acquire was sealed this Wednesday when Ringier Africa Deals Group, a newly-founded joint venture between Swiss Ringier Africa AG and South African Silvertree Internet Holdings (Pty) Ltd, announced that it has acquired one of Nigeria’s biggest online shopping platforms, DealDey. The acquisition, seen as an expansion of Ringier Africa’s portfolio beyond publishing and digital marketing in Nigeria and Silvertree’s first e-commerce investment in the country, sees the two companies investing significantly in Nigeria’s fast-growing multi-billion dollar e-commerce sector as part of their partnership in the Ringier Africa Deals Group. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Tuesday resorted to traditional methods of tackling the current rise in the cost of goods by raising interest rates (MPR) as well as the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of banks. This move is indicative of the fact that the CBN has run out of ideas on how to move the economy forward. At the end of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting Tuesday, the CBN resolved to raise the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) otherwise known as the interest rate, to 12 per cent from 11 per cent as well as bank’s Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to 22.5 per cent from 20 per cent. This move is seen by analysts as a step in the wrong direction as it would greatly reduce the ability of entrepreneurs to expand investments, thereby contracting economic activities, thus worsening Nigeria’s economic outlook. The trickle-down effect of this is that the man on the street, who is already feeling the effects of the fall in government expenditure due to falling oil prices, is expected to suffer some more because net private investments will contract with a rise in interest rate. Manufacturing firms who are already dealing with increased cost of powering their plants due to non-availability of public power, will now find it hard to expand production because it will be more expensive to obtain funds needed to replace aging machines and also replenish their stock of raw materials. This would negatively affect employment rate because, going forward, firms would stop hiring, and may even reduce their workforce in order to stay in business. Experts believe that rather than contracting investments by raising cost of funds and reducing the quantity of funds in circulation, the CBN should ought to expand agricultural output by giving farmers more access to funds, enhance the ability of local manufacturers to expand export through increased access to cheap funds, as well as encouraging financial institutions to fund more SMEs.
