The last, it seems, has not been heard of the corruption scandal rocking former Petroleum Minister Allison Madueke as her cousin has been arrested by the EFCC on charges relating to crude oil diversion. Mr Donald Chidi Amamgbo is alleged to have used four companies to illegally lift crude oil worth billions of dollars. His arrest, according to sources within the EFCC, is the result of findings made in the ongoing probe of the former minister. The offices of Mr Amamgbo’s company, Mezcir Oil and Gas Limited, one of the companies involved in the alleged scam, has been sealed by the EFCC, with operatives carting away several documents relating to the investigation. A compromise appears to have been reached between the newly appointed Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the various caucuses opposed to his emergence as Acting Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) had, after a marathon meeting Monday, made a direct demand on the former Borno governor and former Senator, Alhaji Modu Sheriff, to vacate the office. But reports reaching us indicate that after an enlarged caucus meeting comprising members of the BoT, the Governors Forum, the National Working Committee (NWC), the National Assembly Caucus as well as State Caucuses, the embattled Chairman has been given three months to ride out his tenure in an Acting capacity, after which the process of selecting a new chairman for the party would be drawn up. This decision has however not gone down well with former ministers under ex-president Jonathan who were oppossed to the emergence of Sheriff as party chair. They rose from a meeting last nigh with a communique that they still maintain their disapproval over the emergence of Senator Sheriff as party chair because the process that brought about his emergence was neither legitimate nor transparent. Governor Mimiko of Ondo however appealed to the ex-ministers, stating that the party’s caucuses would reach out to them with a view to resolving the issue. Oil prices rose by more than 6% at the close of trading Monday after a forecast by the International Energy Association (IEA) that the United States shale production would fall this year and the next. At the close of trading Monday, Brent crude sold for more than $33, with the OPEC basket selling at a little above $29. Going forward, it is expected that this momentum would be maintained following ongoing meetings between OPEC members. We reported yesterday that President Buhari’s current diplomatic excursion to the Middle East was to hold talks with Saudi and Qatari officials aimed at reducing oil output to shore up prices. This move, it was reported, is coming on the heels of a tentative agreement by Russia and Saudi Arabia to take measures also aimed at raising the prices of crude oil. The Ad hoc Committee of the House of Representatives investigating Refined Products Exchange Agreement, commonly known as Oil Swap, between the NNPC/PPMC and foreign refineries, has summoned former Petroleum Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke to appear before it and explain her role in the award of contracts running into billions of dollars without agreements signed with companies that took part in the deal. At the last hearing of the committee, three former Group Managing Directors (GMDs) of the NNPC revealed that the award of the contracts was carried out by the former minister, hence the summons for the former minister to appear before the investigative committee. The question now is: Can Minister Madueke appear before the House of Representatives in her present condition? Recall that shortly after her tenure as Minister of Petroleum Resources ended, her family released photos of the once pretty Alison looking all sour and sickly, purportedly suffering from cancer. The current travails of the former minister is coming shortly after her husband, Rear Admiral Amaechina Madueke was arrested and quizzed by the EFCC over allegations he laundered over $600,000 through his personal accounts. We eagerly await the first public appearance of the former minister after her sick photos went viral.
