Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has won the Professional Footballers' Association men's Players' Player of the Year award.

De Bruyne, 29, praised City manager Pep Guardiola for helping him earn the honour, saying "he just lets me be me".

Beth England, 26, won the women's award having helped Chelsea do the Women's Super League and League Cup double.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, 21, won the men's Young Player of the Year award.

Jordan Henderson was among five Liverpool players to be named in the Premier League team of the season.

And Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford won a PFA merit award for his work combating child food poverty.

De Bruyne beat last year's winner Virgil van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Sadio Mane, Henderson and City team-mate Raheem Sterling to the award voted for by his fellow players.

On Guardiola, he said: "He gives me a lot of freedom; I don't know why, that's just the way it goes between us.

For the third consecutive year, the top award for the men's category went to a player whose team did not win the Premier League title.

De Bruyne, though, contributed a record-equalling 20 assists and scored 13 goals as Guardiola's side came runners-up to Jurgen Klopp's team last term.

Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Leicester and England left-back Ben Chilwell.

Premier League clubs have unanimously voted to resume contact training as four more individuals from three sides have tested positive for coronavirus.

A total of 1,008 players and staff were tested in the third round of testing.

Phase two of 'Project Restart' will see players "train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising unnecessary close contact", the league said.

Discussions continue on plans to resume the season when "conditions allow", it added.

So far 12 people have tested positive after 2,752 tests across the league.

Premier League players and staff will continue to be tested twice a week for coronavirus, with the capacity increased from 50 to 60 tests available per club for the fourth round of testing.

Any players or staff to test positive must self-isolate for a period of seven days.

The decision to return to contact training was agreed following consultation with clubs, players, managers, the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), the League Managers' Association (LMA) and the government.

Watford captain Troy Deeney, who had not joined his team-mates in returning to training over fears for his family's health, is expected to resume his training next week.

Plans for the third phase of Project Restart include a step towards normal training and build-up to competitive games.

Speaking on Friday, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters told BBC Sport the league was "as confident as we can be" about resuming the season in June, with 92 fixtures still to play.

Squads started non-contact training last week for the first time since the Premier League was suspended on 13 March because of the pandemic.

Clubs will discuss further issues on Thursday including the use of neutral stadiums, how to decide the season in the event of curtailment and voting on rebates to broadcasters.

This next stage would enable clubs to do 11 v 11 close-contact training, and clearly they will need to do that to get to a point where they are ready to play competitive matches again.

But it is yet to be explained who else would need to isolate if a player tests positive and had been training with several of their team-mates. It is likely to come down to the type of contact and length of contact with that person, using GPS trackers to determine this.

Social distancing will still need to be maintained off the field, and players and staff will have to actively opt-in to agree to the strict requirements - but also the added risks - that come with entering this next phase.

The temporary change to the laws of the game is designed to safeguard players
Teams will be allowed to use five substitutes when the season resumes after a Fifa proposal to help with fixture congestion was approved.

The change applies to competitions due to be completed within this calendar year, and the decision on whether to implement the changes is for each relevant competition organiser.

There is also an option to stop using the video assistant referee system because of safety concerns over officials working together in a small room for the duration of matches.

Most leagues around the world have been halted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Germany's Bundesliga is due to resume next week, while the Premier League's Project Restart has a prospective resumption next month.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab), football's rule-making body, has agreed to a temporary change to the laws of the game in order to protect player welfare.

"The temporary amendment comes into force with immediate effect, and has been made as matches may be played in a condensed period in different weather conditions, both of which could have impacts on player welfare," Ifab said in a statement.

Ifab and Fifa will decide at a later stage whether to extend the ruling to the 2020-21 season.

How it will work

Each team will be allowed to use a maximum of five substitutes.
To reduce disruption to the match, each team will have a maximum of three opportunities to make substitutions during the game; substitutions may also be made at half-time.
If both teams make a substitution at the same time, this will count as one of the three opportunities for each team.
Unused substitutions and opportunities are carried forward into extra time.
Where competition rules allow an additional substitution in extra time, teams will each have one additional substitution opportunity; substitutions may also be made before the start of extra time and at half-time in extra time.

Liverpool's Anfield ground may not witness Premier League action again this season
The 2019-20 Premier League season could be cancelled if clubs do not agree to play in neutral venues, says League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan.

A vote is due to take place on Monday on proposals for a return to football.

The Premier League has been suspended since 13 March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bevan says "time isn't on our side and training needs to be in place very soon" for a return by 12 June.

All 20 clubs are committed to playing the 92 remaining fixtures of the 2019-20 season if and when it is safe to do so.

However, Brighton have said they are "not in favour" of using neutral venues because it may affect the "integrity" of the league.

The neutral stadium proposal needs 14 out of the 20 clubs to vote in favour for it to be adopted.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to update the UK's position on lockdown and the plan for easing measures on Sunday.

Asked if a vote against neutral venues would lead to the season's cancellation, Bevan told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Yes, I think that probably is correct."

He added: "The government, if they haven't already, will be making it clear that home matches with densely populated stadia, really puts into question whether social distancing rules can be adhered to."
What are the plans for a return?

The Premier League's plans - dubbed Project Restart - involve a return to action in June in order to complete the season at the end of July to fit in with Uefa's European competition plans.

This would require full training to begin by 18 May.

The league would also need up to 40,000 tests for players and staff if plans to play the outstanding games behind closed doors are pursued.

On Friday, after their most recent meeting by video conference, Premier League clubs reiterated a commitment to resuming the season "when safe and appropriate to do so".

Who has concerns about a restart?

A number of Premier League club doctors have raised a range of concerns with league bosses over plans to resume the season.

One issue that the senior medics have sought assurances over includes their own liability and insurance cover if players contract the virus.

The 20 club doctors have been holding their own discussions about Project Restart with a view to feeding their thoughts over medical protocols, testing and player welfare.

"The medical and operational protocols are going to be presented to the managers on calls, and indeed the players," Bevan added.

"Hopefully, there will be solutions that create this safe environment.

"Football must not occupy any NHS resources, it must not impinge on the capacity of the health and emergency services. But it covers testing, tracking, PPE available, clear guidelines on social distancing, and obviously a safe environment to train and play.

"There will be guidance on cardiology, mental and emotional well-being. And I think the message really is that health is a guiding principle to any decision-making."

What about safety concerns among players?

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has spoken out to say players are "scared" about returning to action amid the coronavirus outbreak.

On returning to training, players will be tested for the virus twice a week and would be screened for symptoms every day.

There will also be extra precautions for players at training, including wearing protective equipment and not showering or eating on premises.

Bevan says no players would be forced into playing when it is not safe to do so.

"I think as long as we have maximum information and good protocol documents, players will make their own decisions and same for managers. And they'll be looking at best practice," he added.

"If we do get that information clearly and well-presented and governments are clear as well, there'll be some good decision-making - from a manager perspective. I don't think that would be coercing players at all."
