There is tension in the creeks of Delta State, weekend, when a group of peacekeepers, mainly ex-militants, engaged a notorious militant leader, sea pirate and kidnap kingpin, popularly known as MK and his gang allegedly terrorising Edo and Delta states in a heavy shootout that lasted several hours on Abigboro River in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. Vanguard gathered that since Saturday night, it was a total war between the militant leader and the ex-militants known as Creek Dragons, who laid siege to the two escape routes and confiscated a boat belonging to MK, which they took to Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom. It was learned the militant leader and his boys beat a retreat after the shootout on Friday night, but there was apprehension in surrounding communities that the clash would continue. The creek dragons reportedly working for government were instructed to invade the hideout of the militant leader and stop his rampaging attacks and kidnap activities. Commissioner of Police, Delta State, Muhammed Ali, could not be reached, yesterday, for comments and did not respond to SMS to his phone by this reporter. However, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bright Edafe, in response to Vanguard’s inquiry, said: “I am not aware yet.” Chairman of Delta Waterways/Land Security Committee, Warri, Boro Opudu, who confirmed knowledge of the clash, promised to get back to Vanguard with details. However, Senior Special Assistant, SSA, Security Matters, to the Governor of Delta State, Daniel Ezekiel, said: “In the confrontation that happened two nights ago (Friday) MK suffered a heavy casualty as one of his speed boats was seized in the battle and taken away to Oporoza. “For MK to know that this time around it is not going to be business as usual, the two entrance points to the creek where he and his criminal gang are hiding have been blocked by creek dragons monitoring when and how they will move out. “I want to use this medium to say thank you to security agencies and creek dragons for taking the battle to this notorious kidnapper. “I call on the Chief of Army staff to establish a military base at their known hub in Edo State, which the criminal elements take as a safe haven,” he added. EFCC has sealed of Baraza Multiple Purpose Cooperative Society building in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The anti graft agency boldly wrote on the building, "EFCC, under investigation" Baraza is financial contributory investment cooperative that promised twenty-five percent returns of investment to its contributors. After few months of operations, Bazara slumped into a catastrophic financial crisis where it became unable to pay investors their 25 per cent monthly surpluses for the past five months. CEO of Baraza, Pastor Bribena, had promised investors that the cooperative would come back on stream on July 19, 2021 and would begin payment with those he called first timers after which others would also be paid but that heightened hopes soon turned to despair after months of patiently waiting for the promised day to come true. The CEO of Baraza Multi purpose cooperative Pastor Miebi Bribena is allegedly on the run.

A fake Medical Doctor arrested in June 2021 has been sentenced to four years in prison by a Magistrate Court sitting in Yenagoa. Recall that the convict, Akpoviri Vincent Jimmy was arrested after a prompt by Tobis Clinic where he was found to have impersonated one Dr. Charles Umeh, a medical doctor in Taraba State. He used Dr. Umeh's documents in search of jobs in Delta and Bayelsa States, claiming to be a practicing surgeon and sought employment in Tobis Clinic. The convict who is Urhobo from Ethiope West local government area of Delta State, was first discovered in Ughelli when he did not know the correct terminologies a qualified medical doctor should know and use and was arrested when he returned to Yenagoa to continue his schemes. A Senior Magistrate, Mrs. Michael Akata R.G. (Esq.) who presided over the case issued the maximum sentence the court permits for such an offence, which is four years imprisonment with hard labour. She stated that it would serve as a deterrent to others involved in such activities as the state government has shown it will not condone such in the state. In response to the judgement, the Prosecutor, Barr. Philip W. Soroh stated that the case is that of impersonation and forgery, saying he was mobilised by the Solicitor General of the state, Preye Agedah to swing into action and ensure justice is served. He said the judgement was given under two months since the arrest was made, adding that Bayelsa is an infertile ground for impersonation as the Judiciary is proactive and will give judgement without delay. In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, noted that the judgement was a landmark victory for the judiciary and all Bayelsans. He said it showed the commitment of the Prosperity Administration of Governor Douye Diri to prioritize the health of Bayelsans, and deter those working as fake Medical doctors or quacks from such fraudulent acts. He said the case was decided in a very short time which shows the commitment of the Judiciary, noting that those involved in quackery should change their ways or leave the state and thanked the Nigerian Medical Association(NMA) for following through with the case. In his remarks, the NMA Chairman Bayelsa State Chapter, Dr. Ngowari Torunana said the judgement was a victory for Bayelsans and medical doctors in the state. He appreciated the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Pabara Newton Igwele for his support which ensured justice was served, as well as the role played by Tobis Clinic in alerting him about the case in the first place. Dr. Torunana stated that the Anti Quackery Bill is in the state House of Assembly which will be signed into law, and advised Bayelsans not to subject themselves to quacks for medical treatment. Speaking on behalf of the Medical Director of Tobis Clinic, the Director Clinical Services, Prof. Ligha Aloysius said he was pleased with the judgement which will serve as a lesson to the convict and others practicing quackery. The students of the prestigious Niger Delta University have started a protest in the school premises. The reason for the protest is the recent laws made in the school by the The Vice chancellor of NDU which mandates every faculty to have a uniform. The so called uniforms sells for 30,000 a pair and students who fail to purchase the uniforms or wear the uniforms within the school premises would faces automatic rustication. He also said without students who did not enroll their courses in the previous academic year are automatically going back to the previous year, meaning if you are currently in 300L & you did not register your courses (It does not matter if you paid school fees or not) your in 200L and not 300L. He also advised students who failed to pay their school fees within the stipulated time to pack their bags and go back home as they are no longer recognized as students of the institution. The online portal for school fees payment & course enrollment is currently closed also, meaning students can’t register their courses or pay school fees. Many students are affected by the decision taken by the VC & Senate. Over 16,000 + students are affected.
