The Federal Government has revealed plans to turn the ancestral home of afrobeat legend and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti into a museum.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said this while visiting the musician’s ancestral home in Ogun State, along with Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Punch reports.

Mohammed said Fela will be immortalised by turning the house located on NEPA Road, Isabo, Abeokuta, into a museum.

The museum will be inaugurated “very soon, probably next year,” he said, describing the plan as laudable and admirable. He said:

It is laudable in the sense that this is one of the most positive steps to actually put our rhetorics into action.

We have always said that one of the important assets we have is our cultural heritage, our history and this project, which is going to immortalise the Ransome-Kuti family, is laudable and admirable.

The family, as you know, represent different things to different people, whether you talk about education, emancipation, music or entertainment.

Therefore, this attempt by the government at immortalising the family by preserving and restoring the ancestral home is very commendable.

This is the period we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the death of the maestro himself and I am sure this is within time, as the museum will be inaugurated very soon, probably next year.

The emphasis of this government, whether state or federal, is that the creative industry must be turned into creative economy and this centre is going to be a good model to encourage and inspire the youth.

Amosun described Fela as someone who was ahead of his time.

The Kuti family conquered the world, he said, not just Ogun State or Nigeria. He said:

All our icons have a special place in our administration. These are the people who define us, when we go out there and say we are from Ogun State. We can’t call ourselves who we say we are without those giants who lived before us. They laid the foundation that we are all building upon.

And, clearly, the Kuti family is one of those illustrious families that conquered the world, not only Ogun Sate or Abeokuta or Nigeria . Indeed, at times when I  am away in the US and I take a cab, the music I hear is that of great Fela himself.

Fela was far ahead of his time. For us, it will be in our interest to let people know his origin, his root.

Driving on most Nigerian roads is a real mess especially in Lagos. It seems everything has been strategically designed to frustrate the hell out of human existence. Many road problems can never go unnoticed even if you are not a finicky road user. 

Obviously, there are unlimited problems that can make a driver go insane on Nigerian roads.. Some of them are police officers carrying assault rifles in front of kids like we are in a war zone, traffic jam, potholes, excessive horn honking, exhaust fumes, Keke NAPEPs that have grown wings, the container truck apocalypse, police checkpoints and interlocking block roads that have become badly un-interlocked (like what we have on British International School Way, Lekki - the road that leads to The Palms Mall Lekki) amongst many other issues.

Some drivers even do double parking leaving just one lane for cars on a two-way road while some traders will display their market on the main road and they will still abuse the hell out of any driver whose car comes an inch of their show-glass or tray.

If I am asked to pick just one issue that pushes me beyond limit, it is definitely vehicle emission.. I loathe it like.. Man cannot even drive with windows down and take fresh air again.

The commissioning of the Osun state residency identity card could have turned fatal on Wednesday.

The hall meant for the supposedly ground-breaking event had been filled beyond capacity with less than adequate ventilation.

Dignitaries including the Ooni of Ife, HRM Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the 80-year-old Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Aromolaran, were seen sweating profusely.

But if their suffering ended there, it probably would not have made the news.

As if not sensitive to the already horrible challenge facing the event, organizers of the launching then decided to light up fireworks.

The high reaching sparks threatened to consume the asbestos in the hall while it emitted thick smoke that added to the plight of the audience.
By the time the obviously needless fireworks display died down, the dignitaries were coughing and grasping for breath while those who could not stand it ran outside.

Others left in the hall covered their nostrils with whatever they could lay their hands on.

Recognizing their goof and the danger they just exposed the guests to, the organizers were quick to apologize, describing it as a "fatal disaster just averted".

"Thank God we have agile traditional rulers, and a hall devoid of the presence of those suffering from asthma. I apologize, we are sorry,” Governor Aregbesola said.

Perhaps the presence of the Owa Obokun should have given the guests confidence that nothing would go wrong.

He recently said that he would live up to 200 years.

The Presidency on Wednesday said some influential government officials loyal to the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were responsible for the reinstatement of the embattled former Chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, into the service.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, stated this in a statement made available to journalists.

Shehu was reacting to a statement by the Peoples Democratic Party on the matter.

He said the PDP had no moral right to level any accusations against the current government in respect to Maina.

“Some influential officials loyal to the previous government may have been the invisible hand in the latest scandal that saw the return of Maina to the public service, despite being on the EFCC’s wanted list,” the presidential spokesman said.


He, however, assured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to get to the bottom of the matter of the impunity that led to Maina’s reinstatement.

“Everything will be uncovered in due course. This just goes to show us the scale of corruption that this government is fighting. And, as we can all see, corruption keeps fighting back viciously,” he added.

Shehu also described Maina as one of the monsters created by the former PDP government, and which are still rearing their ugly heads long after the party was soundly defeated in the 2015 elections.

“Over and over again, the President Buhari government has pointed out that the administration’s greatest problem is the mess left behind by the previous government. Maina is just one more example,” he said.

The former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has said the controversial reinstatement of Abdulrasheed Maina to the civil service is one scandal too many and the most lethal blow to the administration’s fight against corruption.

President Muhammadu Buhari has on Monday October 23, ordered the immediate dismissal of Maina from the Federal Civil Service and also called for a full report of the circumstances of Maina’s recall and posting to the Ministry of Interior.

This has generated series of reactions including that of the Former Minister of Education who said President Buhari should react and “own these Scandals and acts” as Maina’s reinstatement is “one scandal too many.”

She said the president needs to fix something that is fundamentally fundamentally broken the in current administration as the reinstatement of maina despite his being wanted by EFCC is a symptom.
