The new tax law will actually help someone like you.

From yesterday, the basis on which your state government can tax you has become enshrined in the new law. They can't just turn up in your shop and slam you with any how tax, levies etc

If you're a small business I.e your yearly revenue/turnover is less than N100 million, you will not pay any company income tax (Federal Tax) on your profit. Beautiful!

However, you will pay personal income tax (STATE GOVERNMENT TAX) on any profit you make above N800,000 at a tax rate of between 15% and 25%. So, let's assume you sell clothes. Throughout 2026, your total sale (not profit) is N45 million. Under this new tax law, you will not pay any tax to the Federal government, and you'll not be required to remind any VAT. So you are completely FREE FROM FIRS wahala. Another beauty!

Now, let's assume again that out of your total 2026 sale if N45 million, your profit at the end of the year is N15 million. Your personal income tax (STATE GOVT TAX) will be around 20% of your N15 million profit minus N800,000, meaning you will only pay tax on N14.2 million of your profit. The reason N800,000 is subtracted from your profit before tax is calculated is because under the new tax law (unlike before), EVERY NIGERIAN IS ENTITLED TO N800,000 of tax-free income per year. So whatever your annual income/profit/salary is, whether it is N1 million or N1 billion, tax will not apply to N800,000 of it.

As you can see, for people who are not 100% against paying tax, the new tax laws are very fair to everyone. Infact, compared to the old tax law, the NEW TAX LAW SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE TAX BURDEN ON SMALL BUSINESSES in order to encourage growth. The new law also provides clarity. There should be no more multiple taxation (though we know this is Nigeria) with different government agents turning up in you shop to ask for payment of different taxes, levies etc

The new tax law completely removes anyone earning less than N800,000 from paying ANY INCOME TAX.

This was not the case under the old law. Yet, even those who fall nto the 0% personal income tax category and stand to benefit significantly from the tax law are being completely deceived on social media that the tax law will affect them negatively.

It is incredible how some Nigerians just want their country to fail at all cost and will go to any length, including blatantly lying to cause fear and chaos.

The funny thing is that when I went to negotiate the 120k tax they gave me last year, even the tax officer admitted that they are just asking people to pay tax, yet there are no real benefits from the government. He openly said it himself. But he also said we still have to pay because that is the situation we find ourselves in Nigeria.
Now imagine this 20% of 14.2 million is 2.84 million. So I am expected to bring out 2.84 million and hand it over as tax. On top of that, if you calculate the stamp duties they collect on every transfer, that alone can easily add up to 1 million or more in a year.
What makes it worse is that many businesses are turning over 80 million or more yearly, yet their actual profit is barely 10%, even before expenses. This is because they are forced to keep prices very low due to the harsh economic situation in the country.
At this point, the government should either start building more prisons or be ready for businesses to shut down across the country, because pressure like this cannot continue without consequences. Where exactly did all the fuel subsidy money go?

I know what they did to me last year with this tax issue just for having a small shop at the market, without knowing my income,they brought 120k for me as tax, same way they gave other small business owners with just 12sqm shops. its true o, dangote can actually bid for the project to generate 24hrs supply electricity for us in Nigeria, then he start selling electricity. He might enter top 5 richest in the world... but to build and achieve 24hrs electricity plant is very much more expensive than the refinery. The refinery takes about 20billon dollars. Dabgote generating 24hrs supply in Nigeria would take another 80 to 100billon dollar or more.... realistically, I wish he can just invest in lagos and ogun plus ibadan. It will cost lesser than he built is refinery to generate 24hrs power supply in those region. And he can definitely make is money back
