There appears to be a renewed effort by producers of pornographic films to get a huge chunk of the movie market in Nigeria.

A recent survey conducted by National Mirror showed that in the last six months, over 40 film titles with nude scenes have flooded both the Idumota and Alaba markets, the two film depots in Lagos, the country’s commercial hub.

While efforts are being made by some renowned producers to get Nigeria on the map of quality film productions, certain filmmakers, driven by the passion to make quick profits, have turned their attention to making films with lewd scenes, which are often sold in the open market.

During a random visit to Idumota, it was discovered that films such as ‘Edge of Darkness’, ‘Dark Secrets’, ‘Sinful Act’, ‘Sinful Truth’ and ‘Oyoyo Airline’, among others, were the rave of the moment. Some other titles like ‘Bold Five Babes’, ‘Room 027’, ‘The Benjamins’, ‘Pregnant Hawkers’ and ‘Destructive Instincts’ were being awaited to appear on mass consumable formats.

Although not displayed conspicuously on the shelves, all a customer needs to do is to explain what he or she wants and the items are brought for him from inner chambers.

For instance, after our reporter convinced the shop owners that he was on a genuine mission, they disappeared to other adjoining shops to collect over 40 titles which they claimed had appeared this year.

Such titles are usually released in parts, with potential buyers being forced to buy all the parts of any title they wish to watch.

For reasons best known to the producers, they seem to have also narrowed their choice of actors to some popular acts. It seems favourites are emerging in the person of actors like Tony Umez, Muna Obiekwe, Jibola Daboh, Tonto Dike and Ghanaian actors like Prince David Osei and Frank Artus.

A pastor in one of the big Pentecostal churches in the country and three other directors in the Ogun State Ministry of Education are presently undergoing interrogation over their roles in the N200 million West African Examination Council, WAEC, fees fraud recently uncovered in the state.

Sources Police confirmed yesterday in Abeokuta, that those held in connection with the large scale fraud included two males and two females who are all senior officials of the ministry.

This was just as the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Odubela, confirmed that four officials of his ministry were presently undergoing interrogation over the fraud.

Odubela, who described the incident as an “ugly” development, however, promised to expatiate further on the incident during the ministerial press briefing his ministry will be addressing today in the state capital.

National Mirror also gathered that police detectives have succeeded in uncovering huge sums of money lodged in the bank accounts of those already interrogated.

At least N20 million was said to have been uncovered in the personal account of the said pastor who could not explain the source of the money when interrogated.

Also, four exotic cars were said to have been found in the house of the said pastor, who was pleading for forgiveness, while N10 million and N15 million were also discovered in two of his accounts.

It was further gathered that the detectives were already closing in on proprietors of some private secondary schools involved in the shady deal in the state.

The police source, however, said that appreciable progress had been made on the large scale fraud, stressing that; “I want to tell you that we are not resting on our oars to get the cabal within the state ministry of education.”

The House of Representatives will soon consider a proposed law to strip the President of the power to grant state pardon to individuals.

The piece of legislation seeks to bar the President from granting pardon to public office holders convicted for corruption. This may be a response to the controversy generated by the state pardon, which President Goodluck Jonathan granted the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who was convicted for graft.

The bill obtained by National Mirror yesterday, is entitled: “A Bill for an Act to Amend Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to subject the Presidential Powers of Pardon to the approval of the National Assembly.” The bill is sponsored by Hon. Emmanuel Jime (PDPBenue).

The bill, which has a short title of “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Amendment) Bill, 2013,” seeks to subject the decision of the President to pardon any felon to the approval of the National Assembly.

The proposal goes thus: “Section 175(2) of the Principal Act is hereby amended to read as follows; (2) The powers of the President under sub-section (1) of this section shall be exercised by him after consultation with the Council of State and approved by a majority of each House of the National Assembly.

Asari- Dokubo has warned that nothing untoward must not happen to Jonathan ahead of his reelection in 2015, adding that the circumstances of the death of the acclaimed winner of the 1992 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola and assassinated Head of State, Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, were still fresh in the memories of Nigerians. He warned that similar fate should not befall the President.

Investigations by the police and the State Security Service, SSS, into the security reports presented to the 2007 Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on which the Justice Garba Nabaruma-led tribunal relied upon to nullify the election of former governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, have been confirmed forged.

The forged report paved the way for the declaration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party, LP, as the winner of the 2007 governorship election on July 25, 2008. The tribunal relied on the reports to nullify the result of election in 10 local government areas where the then incumbent Governor Agagu had won.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin, Edo State, on February 23, 2009 upheld the ruling of the tribu-nal on the strength of the forged reports. Agagu had won the April 14, 2007 governorship election. In the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Agagu secured 349,258 votes to defeat Mimiko who polled 226,021.

But after the cancellation of the election results in 10 out of the 18 local government areas of the state by the tribunal, Mimiko emerged as the governor with 198,269 votes against the earlier winner, Agagu, who the Nabaruma-led tribunal credited with 128, 669 votes Agagu had petitioned the Presidency alleging that the LP forged SSS reports in Ondo State during the 2007 election and which were presented at the election petition tribunal.

He added that despite the testimony by SSS officials that security reports were forged, the tribunal relied on the reports to nullify the result of election in 10 local governments where Agagu, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate had won. Agagu had appealed to the President to investigate the matter to safeguard “our democracy which is the beacon of our sustainable development.”

For the third time in the life of his administration, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, yesterday locked out some of his commissioners, as well as hundreds of civil servants for resuming late to work.

The lock out order verbally issued by the state governor was carried out by the Head of Service, HoS, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle and Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Taiwo Adeoluwa, who both personally ensured that the order was carried out.

Accompanied by armed policemen, the two top government functionaries commenced the operations at exactly 8.00am where they locked the two gates leading to the state secretariat complex at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Amosun was said to have resumed office as early as 7.00am with the intention of upholding the civil service rules and regulations which directed the civil servants to officially resume work 7.30am from Mondays to Fridays.

Among Amosun’s commissioners locked out were that of Information and Strategy, Alhaji Yusuf Olaniyonu as well as his counterpart in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Elizabeth Sonubi, among others.

The Lagos State government actually made a u-turn. The Commissioner did announce that the use of Hijab in public schools in the state has been banned.
The commissioner for education had, during a ministerial press briefing said: “If we should allow full usage of hijab in school, then we would invite confusion.

Whoever wishes that his daughter should be wearing hijab while going to school and within the school should send such child to Muslim schools.”

Drama In Imo As Catholic Priests Protest Against New Bishop !

•Say ‘he’s not an indigene’

Priests and the lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara, Mbaise in Imo State recently protested through the major roads of the Diocese against the appointment of Monsignor Ebere Peter Okpalaeke as the Bishop-elect of the Diocese on the grounds that he is not an indigene.

The bishop-elect, Monsignor Okpalaeke is from the Igbo-speaking area of Delta State, which is in Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province. He was appointed last year by Pope Benedict XVI, to replace the late Rt. Rev. Dr. Victor AdibeChikwe, the pioneer Bishop of Ahiara Diocese who died about three years ago.

When the late bishop passed on, the diocese went into days of fasting, petitioning God for a replacement. And that prayer ‘was answered’ last year when Okpalaeke was appointed. But rather than accept the appointment in good faith, the priests see the appointment as an embarrassment in the sense that of the many priests from Mbaise, none was found worthy to be promoted to the rank of a bishop to shepherd the flock of Jesus Christ in Ahiara Diocese.

Ever since, the Catholic faith which enjoys a monopoly of sanctity and uniqueness appears to have experienced some cracks and apprehension.

On Thursday 16, 2013 the priests numbering over 400 marched through the streets disrupting economic activities. The protesters, who wore black attire, disrupted vehicular and human movement for several hours as they marched through major streets displaying placards and chanting anti Vatican slogans.

Some of the placards displayed by the aggrieved Catholics read: “No ordination of Okpalaeke in Mbaise”, “Awka has five bishops, Mbaise has no bishop”, “Mbaise unequivocally rejects Okpalaeke”, “We reject injustice”, “We want Mbaise son as Mbaise bishop”, among others.

In a six-page declaration signed by the President and Secretary, Ahiara Diocesan Priests Association, ADPA, Rev. Fr. Austin Bernadine Ekechukwu and Rev. Fr. Dominic N. Ekweariri respectively, the protesters strongly contested Okpalaeke’s suitability for Ahiara Diocese, given its uniqueness and pastoral realities.

“We, the priests and lay faithful of Ahiara Diocese, having in view the peculiarities of our diocese, state that we categorically reject the appointment of Msgr. Peter Okpalaeke as the bishop-elect of Ahiara Diocese”, the priests stated.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) yesterday insisted that the presidency should be shifted to the region in 2015 general elections, as a mark of equity and justice.

Secretary of the NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, made the remarks when he led other members of the forum on a courtesy visit to Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima at the Government House in Maiduguri.

Abdullahi, a one-time Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, insisted that by 2015 the North will no longer misuse its right of producing the president as it did in 2011, blaming such failure to the connivance of some state governors of the region.

He noted that the North will never again compromise what rightly belongs to it, saying however that the forum has already put all hands on deck to see to the successful return of power to the region.

“I was one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who outlined the zoning formula of presidency between North and South but unfortunately, following the demise of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the formula was immediately put aside to achieve unjustifiable course,” he declared.

The NEF scribe said the North has the population, resources and all it takes to make them produce the next president, noting that the forum will liaise with relevant stakeholders of the region to ensure that what was taken away from them is returned.

“Presently we don’t have a particular political party or presidential candidate, rather the North is our party and candidate. We will join forces with anyone willing to see the restoration of power to the region,” he added.

Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, Rotimi Amaechi, has vowed to seek reelection into the exalted position which he described as the genesis of his current political travail.

This is in defiance to the stance of President Goodluck Jonathan who is against his re-election. Amaechi stated this in a special church service presided over by the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt, Most Rev. Camillus Etokudo, in Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He called on the church to show interest in politics and pray for his success at the election.

Amaechi attributed his travails to his position in the NGF, asking: “Why do we have to go through crisis like this all the time? “I told my friends that I will run for the chairmanship of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, whether I win or lose, because that is the genesis of all these crises.”

“Something similar to what is happening now, happened in the past and we prayed ourselves to power,” Amaechi said, adding that some people misconstrued his straightforward nature for pride and arrogance. He said: “I like being straightforward and honest, but some people say I am proud, they say I am arrogant, I am brash, but it is not arrogance.

“Just because I look at you in the face and tell you the truth, people say I am arrogant.” Amaechi said that he believes in the power of prayers to surmount his challenges, despite the activities of some political jobbers and detractors against his administration. “I believe in the power of prayers.

If you look at my political history, you cannot divorce God and prayers from my political history. “If you remember how I became the Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, it was through prayers. The decision to register the jets in foreign countries, particularly in South Africa, United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada and even Brazil is said to be informed by the notion that in case the owners want to resell the jets, they would warrant a bigger value from buyers.

Speaking on foreign registration for private jets, the immediate past Managing Director, Aero Airlines, Capt. Akin George regretted that most of the private jets carry foreign registration credentials rather than Nigerian registration.

He had subsequently called on the authorities concerned in the country to make registration processes in Nigeria cost friendly and attractive.

Also, a member of the Aviation Round Table, ART, and an aeronautic engineer with the defunct national carrier, Nigeria Airways Limited, Engr. Sheri Kyari, listed the costs associated with the ownership of private jet to include scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, keeping the flight crew, landing and parking charges and the use of Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC), which usually belongs to airlines, among others. A retired vice-principal, Chimezie Osuigwe has been arrested by the police in Imo state for the alleged ritual murder of his 78-year-old mother .
He was arrested after the embalmed body of his mother, who was declared missing in 2003, was discovered by a family member in a cupboard inside the house in Ejemekuru in Oguta Local Government Area.
Police Commissioner Musa Katsina who confirmed the development, said the embalmed body of the woman, Mrs. Lucy Osigwe, had been kept in that condition since 2003.
“ The corpse of Mrs. Lucy Osuigwe, who was declared missing in 2003, was found in a large cupboard inside a shrine in a private room in a circumstance depicting ritual practice. The embalmed body, which was kept in that condition for about 10 years, is believed to have been placed in the wardrobe by her son, Dr. Chimezie Osuigwe, a devotee of the Guru Maharaji Sect”, he said.
The commissioner said the body would be handed over to the forensic team of the command to determine the cause of death.
Katsina said the suspect would be held for first degree murder until the cause of death was established.

Former Governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, has explained why the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will lose the 2015 presidential election.

Kaita said that PDP would lose the presidential poll if the party presents President Goodluck Jonathan for re-election.

Speaking in an interview with National Mirror, he said fielding Jonathan would mark the end of PDP as the ruling party.

Accusing Jonathan’s administration of incompetence, the former governor mentioned the insecurity and other challenges confronting the nation as major factors that would work against his candidacy.

Kaita said: “If the PDP presents Jonathan to contest, it knows very well that it can’t win. The party knows very well that the decision to present Jonathan will be its end.”

He, however, flayed the Jonathan-led government to protect Nigerians and their property.

The former governor said: “The present administration rests on its oars while hundreds of Nigerians are killed on a daily basis, yet the same government wants to come back to power through the votes of the very people it has failed to adequately protect.”

Kaita, however, described those pushing Jonathan to seek re-election as selfish, saying Nigerians have never had it so bad in the last two years.

He said: “In the last couple of years, Nigerians have become poorer, with little or no growth in the economic and other sectors, as many lives continue to be lost in several parts of the country.

“The President is supposed to be in charge and he is supposed to be able to control what was happening, but he can’t or he has not been able to. So, why should you want him to contest? To continue to do what? To continue killing us? No.

“The present administration, in the last two years, has failed to make adequate impact in the economic, political, among other sectors, even as the PDP has continued to witness series of internal wrangling.

“Governors are fighting one another. Governors fighting the President, governors fighting the party (PDP); everybody is fighting, and such a situation has never happened before.”

The 81-year-old, however, said the only solution to the nation’s woes is to vote out the ruling PDP in the next presidential poll.

“What I can say is that new election should be held to get rid of the people (in power). I think that will be the best option for Nigerians,” he said.

Queen of waka music, Queen Salawa Abeni, has disclosed to Entervaganza that she had to ask General Kollington Ayinla, the fellow musician whom she has children for, why he hates her.

According to her, during the period she was sick for four years recently, Kollington only came to visit her one year and two months into her sickness.

“And when he came, I asked him that why do you hate me? I have three children for you and you are just coming to see me after a year and two months?”

she recalled to Entervaganza. Continuing, she said, “But he said he doesn’t hate me and that he was sorry. He asked how he could help and I said, go to the bank, give me money. And he was just laughing.”

Oloyede, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, replaces Late Alhaji Lateef Adegbite who died in 2012.

A chieftain of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Onitsha, Mr. Tony Nwodo, yesterday threatened that Nigeria will not know peace if the Federal Government retries the group’s leader Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, and five others for alleged treason.

Nwodo, who described the planned retrial of as barbaric, said that “Igbo will, in like manner become barbarians to deal with the outcome of the retrial if ever it holds.”

Speaking to National Mirror on various issues affecting MASSOB, he said MASSOB members are hopeful that nobody would retry Uwazuruike because he did not commit any offence.

Nwodo said: “Uwazuruike for retrial? Nobody will do that, he is a non-violent fighter, we have demonstrated to the government that we are non-violent people. Uwazuruike has never ordered any of us to go for violence and a peaceful man does not deserve to be tried”.

The new Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, will emerge today. Investigations by National Mirror showed that the contest is between the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Isiaq Oloyede and Prof. Tajudeen Gbadamosi of the University of Lagos.

NSCIA has been working underground to find a replacement for Dr. Lateef Adegbite, following the death of the former secretary-general last year.

When Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki became the Sultan of Sokoto in 1988 and the President-General of the organisation, Adegbite was appointed Secretary- General of the council. Under the leadership of Adegbite and Dasuki, the NSCIA, which was established in 1974, became much more active, with the late scribe virtually becoming the face of the organisation.

Sources close to NSCIA revealed that several factors were taken into cognisance before arriving at the choice of the two contestants. Though the leadership of the NSCIA is still keeping mum over who will eventually be appointed, National Mirror learnt that the new secretary-general will be announced today.

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has warned of impending danger saying that the country is gradually sliding to “executive impunity” that threatens the nation’s democracy. Prof. Soyinka said that recent events in the polity were creating room for an emerging dictator.
In a statement titled, “Cool it, President Goodluck Jonathan,” Soyinka cautioned that the abuse of federal might, the police and destabilisation of the legislature was not healthy for the polity.

“Before the irretrievable point of escalation is reached, we have a duty to sound a collective alarm, even without the lessons of past violations of constitutional rights and apportionments of elected representatives of the people, and their consequences,” he said.

Soyinka decried the subtle and crude ways the Presidency is handling its disagreement with Amaechi, which is heating the polity in Rivers State. He said for the survival of democracy in the country, President Jonathan should stop the Federal Government- backed attack on Rivers State.

“There is an opportunity in Rivers State to break this spiralling culture of executive impunity – manifested in both subtle and crude ways – that is fast becoming the norm in a post-military dispensation that fitfully aspires to be called a democracy.”

The literary giant noted that a responsible government must reduce the increasing flash points in the country not to escalate it. His words: “The increasing flashpoints in the nation have reached an unsustainable level, and responsible governance must accept that it is an urgent duty to diminish, not increase them.

“Even the notoriously short Nigerian memory remains traumatised by recollection of the rape of Anambra that was enabled by the connivance of federal might, and the abandonment of all moral scruples in executive disposition.

“The people of Ogun State were humiliated by the antics of a power besotted governor, with their elected legislators locked out of the House of Assembly for upwards of a year.

“That hideous travesty was again made possible by the abusive use of the police. Even a child in this nation knows that the police derive its enabling and operational authority from the dictates of the centre, so there can be no disguising whose will is being executed wherever democratic norms are flouted and the people’s rights ground to mush under dictatorial heels.”

This is the third time in the past three months that Soyinka will be raising the alarm on the state of the nation.

The Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, said yesterday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, its leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, was prepared to go to prison.

MASSOB’s Deputy National Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, who spoke on behalf of the group, was reacting to the order of the Supreme Court directing the Federal High Court to resume Uwazuruike’s treason trial.

Mocha vowed that the group would not to waiver in its determination to prosecute the Federal Government and the police at the International Criminal Court of Justice, ICCJ, for the gruesome killing and dumping of over 50 Igbo youths including nine MASSOB members in Azu River in Anambra State.

According to him, Uwazuruike is not jittery of going back to prison again because he has done that earlier.

He said: “The threat to rearrest Chief Uwazuruike is for us to withdraw our case at ICCJ. We cannot withdraw the case against the police authorities for that genocide.”

Mocha explained that Uwazuruike, who was arrested on October 25, 2005 and granted three months bail by the Federal High Court on October 26, 2007 to bury his late mother, Mrs. Monica Uwazuruike, on January 19, 2008, voluntarily submitted himself after the burial.

He said: “After the burial of his mother, Chief Uwazuruike submitted himself to Imo State Police Command on January 22, 2008 to be taken back to prison, but the then commissioner of police was said to be holding security meeting and directed DCP Ahmed Yusuf to refuse to take Uwazuruike into custody.”

While re-emphasising the group’s resolve to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion, Mocha disclosed that no police intimidation could stop his members as they had employed the services of two international lawyers to handle the killing and dumping of the innocent Igbo youths in river.

Meanwhile, MASSOB Okgiwe zone in Imo State has joined other members to request its sons and daughters in the area to remain at home on June 8 to protest against the Nigerian state over the senseless killings of Ndi-igbo in different parts of the country, particularly in the North.

In a statement signed by its regional leaders in Okigwe, Onu-imo, Ehime Mbano, and Isiala Mbano, the spokesman for the zone, Kingsley Ezeugo, accused the international community of watching the killing of Igbo Christians with “conspirational silence”.

He said: “Never in history have a people been so brutalised, hated and traumatised as they have done to the Igbo tribe of eastern Nigeria.”

If you are in the habit of eating just anything during the daytime, you need to retrace your steps henceforth as recent studies have revealed that our diets actually determines and influences how well we sleep.

The study was carried out by a group of researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, United States of America. The researchers studied data from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) involving 4,548 people.

According to them, they looked at how much sleep the participants reported getting each night, as well as a very detailed report of their daily diet.

For the study, very short sleep patterns were defined as less than five hours a night, short sleep was five to six hours a night, standard sleep was 7 to 8 hours, and long sleep was nine or more hours a night.

Indeed, it was discovered that people in the different sleep categories had distinct diet patterns. Short sleepers consumed the most calories, followed by normal sleepers, then very short sleepers.

Long sleepers consumed the least calories. Normal sleepers, however, showed the highest food variety in their diets, and very short sleepers had the least variation in what they ate. Nutritionists say a varied diet tends to be a marker for good health since it includes multiple sources of nutrients.

Again, it was observed that very short sleepers drank less tap water and consumed fewer total carbohydrates and lycopene, found in red and orange-colored fruits and vegetables and high in cancerfighting antioxidants, than people with other sleep patterns.

Short sleepers on the other hand tended to consume less vitamin C, tap water and selenium (found in nuts, meat and shellfish) consumption, but more lutein or zeaxanthin, which are found in green, leafy veggies.

Long sleep was however associated with consuming less theobromine, which is found in chocolate and tea, the saturated fat dodecanoic acid, choline found in eggs and fatty meats and total carbohydrates.




The researchers further noticed that long sleepers also drank more alcohol. According to Michael Grandner, an instructor in psychiatry and member of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology at Pennsylvania, many studies have looked at how sleep influences eating habits, but theirs is one of the first studies to look into the role diet plays on sleep quality.

Research so far, suggests sleep deprivation interferes with hunger and satiety hormones crucial to regulating appetite. But Grandner and his colleagues suggest that the relationship works both ways, and that diet can alter sleep as well.

Some of the interactions are well known already, such as how drinking too much water can interrupt sleep by waking you up to use the bathroom, or how consuming heavy and spicy foods can keep you up, but there may be less apparent effects as well.

“For example, iron deficiencies have been linked to restless leg syndrome in some cases.

There may be certain substances that work on the molecular level to regulate some of the biological machinery of sleep, but there hasn’t been a lot done to that part, and this study may be one of the first to help point us in the right direction of where to look,” part of the study report revealed.

You are now looking younger than your age, what is the secret?
God’s grace.

There must be some beauty rituals you stick to. Maybe facial exfoliation and cleansing; right?
I don’t do such. I was joking with one of my sisters that we should go and start doing such things. Especially, this one that 60 years old women are looking younger than we are, we have to go and start doing beauty treatments or the facial exfoliation you just mentioned (laughs).

There is high rate of divorce in Nollywood and your marriage has lasted the test of time. What are you doing right?
Let me ask you; is the rate of divorce in the movie industry more than the ones in the other industries? Have you taken a census of what is happening with lawyers? With doctors, with nurses? You don’t know. Everybody keeps talking of the divorce in the movie industry because we are the ones in the limelight. I refuse to agree that there is high rate of divorce in the Nigerian movie industry. And then, my marriage which you said has lasted the test of time is not exceptional. It’s just that we are the ones that people tend to know. There are so many people that have been married years much longer than ours’. There are marriages that have stood the test of time and they abound in other professions. And mind you, making your marriage stand the test of time doesn’t mean enduring all sorts of brutality. I wouldn’t support the fact that because you want your marriage to last, you put yourself under physical and emotional battery. If it is not working, get out fast.

Do you find time to cook for your husband?
Well, what we have in my house is different from the way culturally, Nigerians expect women to be. My husband has always enjoyed cooking from the day I met him. So, I have never been someone that was pressured to always cook, I have never been. I cook when I want to. If there is something in particular I want to cook, yes, I could cook, or if there is no one else to do the cooking, I will do it. But when I had a cook, she was the one that used to do it.

How have you been able to keep your marriage?
It is by God’s grace. It is not as if we didn’t have our own challenges. We had a lot of them but God’s grace has been in abundance. His mercies have been so amazing that we have been able to surmount the challenges. We have been able to realise that without letting go of who we are, we are sole responsibilities to each other. We are one nucleus family, my husband and I, including my children.

Can you give a toast to your husband?
Yes, why not. Olu Jacobs is a troublesome human being (laughs), he is amazing, he is charming, he is caring. Olu would work so hard to take care of his family before even remembering himself. In fact, he is an amazing man and I have been blessed.

Any pet name? what does he call you?
That depends on his mood. Sometimes, he calls me ‘Omo’, sometimes he calls me ‘honey’ or any name that comes to his mouth depending on how he is behaving at that point in time. Sometimes, I call him his full name and when I do that one, you know there is ‘Wahala’ (laughs). But he is a wonderful man. He is full of life and fun.

Bank customers have raised the alarm over what they described as fraudulent charges from the banks despite efforts by the authorities to curb such practices.

Investigations conducted by National Mirror showed that some banks deduct monthly maintenance fees on Automated Teller Machines, ATM, cards, after the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, abolished the N100 charge on third-party withdrawals and approved N100 annual maintenance charge.

Other spurious charges include N500 monthly maintenance fee for current accounts and N5 inter-state commission on every N1,000 transaction.

Some banks charge as high as N50 on SMS alerts in place of the N4 that GSM networks usually charge for text messages.

An Ecobank customer, Miss Sandra David, who lives in Oyo State, said her bank deducted N300 from the money sent to her from Lagos State recently, adding that she could not withdraw the amount she needed because of the deduction.

She said: “I wanted to use the money to pay school fees and buy some books, but N300 was deducted from my savings account.”

A civil servant in Lagos, Mrs. Ade Lawson, said: “I used to bank with Ecobank but because of the way they deduct my money anyhow, I stopped using it. For instance, there is no alert when you deposit and even when money is being withdrawn from the account.”

Another customer, Engineer Taiwo Bolarinwa, asked: “What is the essence of the N100 card maintenance fee they remove every month?”

According to him, when the banks were deducting N100 inter bank ATM charges, they never deducted up to the amount from his account because he did not patronise other banks except the one he opened an account with.
He added that some banks had even deducted the illegal N100 monthly charge in arrears.

A customer of one of the rescued banks, Mr. Kunle Ibiyemi, complained about arbitrary charges on bank transactions.

He said: “Keystone Bank even charges me inter-state fees because I opened my account in Benin and now operate it in Lagos. They come up with so many charges that should ordinarily not be attached to a transaction.”

A salary account owner with Union Bank, Mr. John Oladejo, said the bank backdated the monthly ATM card maintenance fees to October 2012 and deducted the money up to April, this year.

He said: “Between March and April 2013, the bank has deducted N600 ATM card maintenance fees from my account. Guaranty Trust Bank has not deducted any amount from my account except First Bank that removed N100 card maintenance fee for March 2013.”

When National Mirror asked the Customer Service Officer of Union Bank on Broad Street, Lagos, she insisted that the charge was the monthly ATM card maintenance fee, adding that other banks charged as well. She could not explain further.

Last month, the CBN cancelled the N100 monthly ATMs card maintenance fee introduced by some banks, pegging the maintenance fee at N100 annually

. It also pegged the mandatory cost of SMS alert at N4 subject to the Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, directives.

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, has described as baseless, an allegation levelled against former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the former ruler ran a killer squad while in office.

Fasawe, in a statement made available to National Mirror yesterday, said the allegation was a tissue of lies, as Obasanjo neither maintained a killer squad nor had a hand in the death of any politician.

Odusanya, had on Saturday in a live interview with an online news portal, Sahara Reporters and published by a national newspaper on Sunday alleged that Obasanjo had a killer squad as a president.

He also alleged that the killer squad was housed at SSS headquarters, known as Yellow House, and was used for political assassinations, especially the killings of former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Bola Ige, and Chief Harry Marshall, former National Vice Chairman (South South) of the All Peoples Party, APP.

Fasawe, who admitted that Odusanya was his personal assistant, said there was no truth in the allegation.

He stated that Odusanya lacks the requisite knowledge or insight into the workings of government during the era of Obasanjo.

Ikenne, the country home of the Awolowo dynasty yesterday stood still as the remains of the publisher of Nigeria Tribune newspaper, Oluwole Awolowo, was committed to mother earth. The corpse of Awolowo was buried at exactly 1:32p.m in the family vault of the Anglican Church Cemetery after the funeral service held in his honour at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne Remo in Ikenne Local Government area of Ogun State.

He was buried beside his elder brother and first son of the family, Olusegun Awolowo who died in 1963. The funeral was, however, almost disrupted following a clash between officials of Ogun State government and delegate of the federal government over the order of protocol.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by the federal government delegate headed by the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal as well as five serving and four former governors from South West states and Delta, all joined to pay their last respect to the deceased.

The corpse arrived the church in a white stretched Limousine of M.I.C undertakers marked Lotad Funerals at exactly 10am after which the funeral service commenced. In his sermon, Bishop of Remo Anglican Diocese, Rt. Reverend Olusina Fape, who presided over the funeral service emphasised that death is inevitable for every mortal and charged the congregations to live a fruitful life to glorify God as did by the deceased.

The cleric, who spoke before the governors of Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Osun as well as Delta charged politicians to bear good fruits in their stewardships as they may not have a second chance.

Fape, who stressed that insincerity had been the bane of Nigeria’s development, also charged the politicians to learn from the act of humility of the late publisher of Nigerian Tribune who refused the temptation of using the family name to enrich the pockets of the family.

“In the present political dispensation, politics has become a thing of personal enrichment as against the tool for serving humanity. Insincerity is the bane of this country; if God could only open our eyes as we are seated here today and help us to see what we concealed within us, people will run for some people and they will not stay close to them.

“Those who have destroyed our economy and turned politics to an arena of theater and arena of bloodletting will suddenly become heroes at death, those who have instituted corruption and fuel terrorism and political crises are the ones that will want to be celebrated as the best head of state Nigeria has ever produced.

Which way Nigerians?,” Fape retorted. In their goodwill messages, President Jonathan, Speaker Tambuwal, Chairman of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nduka Obaigbena, as well as the governor eulogised the selfless virtues of the deceased, stressing that “Chief Oluwole Awolowo in his life time, made his mark in the service of this nation.” President Jonathan, in his message, delivered by Maku said: “I can say as the President of this republic that I cherish the good ideals of Chief Oluwole Awolowo and his good examples of not using his family’s name and tradition for self aggrandisement, throughout his life, in spite of the privileges that the family name could have opened doors in the corridors of power. “He maintained a healthy relationship that is based on honour on the family tradition and indeed on the principles that this family has taught Nigerians. Those principles are embedded in the motto of the Nigeria Tribune newspaper which is truth, courage and fairness”. Jonathan, who stated that the deceased was thoroughly tutored by the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, however, declared that Nigeria would continue to cry for men of vision and principle that would stand on the platform of fairness, and service with integrity to the entire federation as the late publisher of Nigeria Tribune was laid to rest.

He said further: “Let me say that if you look at Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s political history, one thing that made him stand out as a sage in our country wasn’t the offices he held but that he was always led by honour, he was always led by the truth and he was always led by what he spread in the Nigerian federation. “Sometimes he suffered greatly for his principles but he remained undaunted.

This nation remains grateful to his tradition and what he has done to help this nation. We thank him for what he has done for this country”. Meanwhile, the political rivalry between the federal government and government of Ogun state yesterday reared its ugly head in Ikenne home of the Awolowo family when officials of the state government engaged their federal counterparts, ordering them to vacate the front row seats.

At the funeral service held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne Remo in Ikenne local government area of Ogun State Amosun’s protocol officials openly clashed with the federal government delegates over who had the right to occupy the front row seats.

The funeral service, which was delayed for close to 30 minutes, was almost disrupted following the insistence of Governor Amosun’s protocol officials that the federal government delegates must vacate the seat.

Led by the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, the federal government delegates which comprises the President spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati; Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru; Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide and Special Assistant to President Jonathan on Policy and Strategies, Dr. Oronto Douglas, were already seated and occupying the front row seat in the church before the state governor arrived.

The clash of interest between the two governments’ officials was hinged on who should sit on the first seats in the church that had already been reserved for Governor Amosun and his entourage.

Irked by the development, the federal government’s protocol officials, who considered the situation as an affront however, believed that the insistence of their Ogun State counterparts who insisted that only one person from the delegation would be allowed to sit at the front seat in the funeral service was political.

The tension created by the scenery almost got out of hand before the grand child of the Awolowo family, Segun intervened and begged the officials not to disrupt his uncle’s funeral service.

A quick adjustment to accommodate Governor Amosun and his wife on the same seat took place and the issue was temporarily rested. When the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku later arrived the church after the first crisis had been resolved, the Minister of Agriculture, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, who indirectly was hosting the federal delegates, had to vacate his seat for him.

The crisis later reared its ugly head when another seat was brought in to the front row for five governors that were at the service. This development did not go down well with the delegation of the president who resisted it but were ignored.

The crisis later got to its peak when the Master of Ceremony and a member of the church that was moderating at the funeral service recognised representative of the president to speak before the state governor, a situation termed as contrary to the order of protocol.

The Labara Maku-led delegation however, ignored the call to deliver the president’s address, a development which also put the programme on hold for a while before one of the daughters of Awolowo, Chief (Dr.) Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu, quickly went to the moderator to save the embarrassing situation.

Also in his remark at the funeral, Governor Amosun openly acknowledged the protocol flop and apologised that the Presidency should make the last and final address “as the protocol demands”.

Fashola disclosed this during a courtesy visit by members of the Anglican Communion, Diocese of Lagos West, led by the outgoing Bishop, Rt. Rev. Peter Adebiyi.

The governor, who said every major city in the world had its own black spots, disclosed that it was difficult to separate religion from daily activities because, Nigeria’s two major religions preach peace.

Responding to the call by Adebiyi to lift the ban on religious activities in public schools especially primary schools, Fashola said: “I assure you that we will do something on the ban placed on religious studies in our public schools.

I could not agree anymore with suggestion to improve the moral content of learning. And this relates to issues we have also raised that the most intelligent person has no learning if he or she has no compassion and fear of God.

The best professional mean nothing if he or she fails to serve God. And all these are time tested building block of the society. We all must serve God. And I think that it is incumbent to retrace our steps if we have veered off that path or to reinforce it if we haven’t. I assure you we will do something on it.”

Speaking on insecurity challenges in the country, the governor said Nigeria will get better but would require the contribution of everyone.

“Citizens must be self protective and vigilant. And they must share information with the security agencies. Crime detection and prevention is not divination. It is knowledge. So, if citizens distance themselves from security agencies, they have distanced themselves from their security.

The fact that Lagos is safe does not mean we should provoke people to crime. These are some of the senses of internal protection.”

Speaking earlier, Adebiyi who is due to retire on April 27th, said “If your work and your predecessor would be lesser, children must learn to know God. When they learn this, they will know that it is not good to commit crime. I think the government should return to the primary schools for thorough religious studies, so we can rebuild our fallen standard of life. Some may say it is not good, but I believe it is the best. Since government took religious studies away from the schools, we are yet to see any positive results.

“What the children are taught today in religious houses is like a drop of water in the ocean. Many now are nominal Christians and Muslims.

“Everyone is agitating and restless due to the dire situation in the country. I want to appeal that we should now look for what to do for our children,” Adebiyi said.

Soon, the state government would commence arrest and prosecution of recalcitrant drivers. According to the commissioner, any offender is liable to fines ranging from N50, 000 to N250, 000.

Speaking at the 2013 Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, road safety campaign week entitled: ”Driver’s Health-Key to safe driving”, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, added that from April, 22, 2013, traffic law enforcement agents will embark on arrest of any driver without LASDRI license.

Explaining government’s magnanimity on the need to get certified, Opeifa, warned organisations to comply with the law, adding that most firms deny their drivers opportunity to attend trainings meant to upgrade their skills, as well as further ensure safety on the road.

His words: “we are focusing on voluntary compliance. Over six months, we have been sensitising the public on driver’s documentation exercise. We will commence enforcement on April 22, 2013. Drivers with Guinness, Dangote and corporate organisations are advised to comply as there will be no waiver.

“In order to improve the competence of drivers and ensure the safety of persons on highways, the Ministry of Transportation, has introduced periodic training for drivers through LASDRI for recertification and rehabilitation of professional drivers.

“It is a fact that drivers have the responsibility to be properly trained, licensed and most importantly be physically and mentally fit before going onto the roads. Most accidents on our roads are as result of human error that could be avoided if necessary precautionary measures are put in place.”

On the VIS safety week, Opeifa said it is aimed at further educating motorists and achieving the goals of the government on zero tolerance on unworthy road vehicles.

His words: “we are focusing on voluntary compliance. Over six months, we have been sensitising the public on driver’s documentation exercise. We will commence enforcement on April 22, 2013. Drivers with Guinness, Dangote and corporate organisations are advised to comply as there will be no waiver.

“In order to improve the competence of drivers and ensure the safety of persons on highways, the Ministry of Transportation, has introduced periodic training for drivers through LASDRI for recertification and rehabilitation of professional drivers.

“It is a fact that drivers have the responsibility to be properly trained, licensed and most importantly be physically and mentally fit before going onto the roads. Most accidents on our roads are as result of human error that could be avoided if necessary precautionary measures are put in place.”

On the VIS safety week, Opeifa said it is aimed at further educating motorists and achieving the goals of the government on zero tolerance on unworthy road vehicles.
