Fresh tension is rising in the Niger Delta following the Federal Government’s failure to provide jobs for about 10,000 former militants so far trained by the presidential post-amnesty office. It was learnt that the unemployed amnesty beneficiaries are now roaming the streets and creeks of the region, months after their training. National Mirror learnt that some of the “frustrated former militants have returned to the creeks apparently to make ends meet in whatever way possible.” Some stakeholders feared that the former militants could return to their criminal antecedent in the creeks and along the waterways in order to earn a living. Investigations showed that the plight of the former militants was worsened by the Federal Government’s failure to initiate measures to meaningfully engage them after their training. Nigerian markets are still flooded with anti-malaria drugs such as Chloroquine, Artesunate, Sulphadoxine pyremethamine among others, two years after they were banned by World Health Organization (WHO) for being used for the treatment of malaria. The global health agency had in 2011 banned the drugs from being prescribed for the treatment of the disease “in order to delay or prevent the development of drug resistance malaria”. WHO says treatments that use only artemisin need to be taken for seven days to kill all parasites, but, according to the agency, patients often stop treatment after a few days when they begin to feel much better. This, it stresses, leaves the remaining parasites in contact with low levels of the drug – a recipe for resistance. Hence, it recommends the use of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACTs) which are to be taken within three days. Conveying the message to journalists in Lagos, former WHO Country Representative, Dr David Okello said: “WHO has recommended the ban of the production, importation and prescription of artemisinin monotherapies. It has also launched a global plan to contain or control the spread of arteminsinin-resistant malaria. There is no place for the use of Chloroquine and sulphadoxine pyremethamino in the treatment of malaria in Nigeria. Artesunate alone cannot treat malaria. The First Lady’s visit to Rivers State has began to take the shape of a political campaign to weaken the popularity base of Amaechi and deploy the machinery to establish a strong political structure for President Goodluck Jonathan, come 2015. Dame Patience Jonathan, who relocated to Port Harcourt last week, has kickstarted efforts to draw support for her husband towards 2015 Presidential election, as she yesterday visited a prominent traditional ruler in the state capital, who is a known antagonist of the governor and the father of the suspended Chairman of Obior/Akpor Local Government Area, urging him to support her husband’s 2015 presidential bid. Mrs. Jonathan, in her usual character, stormed the palace of Eze Omunnakwe Nyeche Nsirim, the Nyewali of Rumeme Community in Port Harcourt, with a large entourage and urged the traditional ruler to use his influence to garner support for her husband, if and whenever he declares his intention to run for second term as president. She said: “I am here to thank you and appreciate the role you and my people of Rivers State played in voting for my husband in the 2011 presidential election. Rivers people voted massively for my husband. I am your daughter and my husband is your son. I want you to support him when time comes. I know you will not disappoint us. We on our part will never forget you.” In his speech, Eze Nsirim assured the First Lady of the support of Rivers people for her husband, come 2015. Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State yesterday refuted a report by a social media that the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Aize Obayan had been suspended from her current position as the Director of the Education Commission of the Winners Chapel for allegedly altering examination results for many students in the university’s Departments of Mass Communication and Chemistry while she was the vice-chancellor of the university. Mrs. Obayan, a professor of Counseling was until last December and for seven years the vice-chancellor of the faith-based university. A statement made available to National Mirror yesterday by the university’s Head, Corporate and Public Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Igban, refuted the allegation, describing the report as utter falsehood and a mere conjecture with intent to malign the good name of the university and that of the former VC, as well as other officers mentioned in the story. It further stated that Prof. Obayan whose elevation to her present position was based on her excellent performance as a VC is still holding her current office and that there is no plan to remove her. The university according to the statement is not only blessed with erudite scholars of international repute who can never be manipulated but also appoints credible external examiners from reputable universities both within and outside the country for the vetting of all examinations scripts of students of the university. While disclosing that it is true that the daughter of Prof. Obayan graduated from the Department of Mass Communication and that she earned her grades with her academic records available for verification, the release also stated that being a Christian mission commitinstitution, Covenant University’s mandate and core values negate exam malpractice or fraud in whatever guise. Similarly, the university also refuted the report by the same social media that a former Registrar of the university, Pastor Daniel Rotimi had married a former student of the institution as a second wife, saying it was not only untrue but also a mischievous report of the highest order. The Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, has reiterated that his withdrawal from the Northern States Governors’ Forum, NSGF, is not a mistake, adding that he stood by his decision to abstain from the NSGF’s meetings henceforth. Suswam was reacting to the comments made by the Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, that Governors Isa Yuguda and Suswam of Bauchi and Benue states respectively, made “the biggest political mistakes of their lives” by their decision to, henceforth, stop attending meetings of the NSGF. Governor Kwankwaso was also quoted in the report to have threatened that neither of the two governors nor their candidates would win elections again in the North. In a statement made available to National Mirror and signed by the Media Adviser to Suswam, Dr. Cletus Akwaya, the governor described the statements credited to Kwankwaso as “misleading as they are intended to undermine the integrity of Governor Suswam by portraying him as a leader who is against the interest of his people and the political interests of the North. This is certainly untrue and a total misinterpretation of the decision of Governor Suswam on the subject matter under discourse.” Saying that Suswam is a leader who weighs the implication of a decision on his people before taking it, the statement added that “his decision to withdraw from meetings of the NSGF was also well thought out and taken in the overall interest of the people of Benue State, who he represents as well as the people of the old Northern Region of which Benue people are a proud part.” The Benue governor added that he took the decision because of the “mistrust created by the betrayal by some members of the forum,” saying that he would maintain that stance for as long as the unacceptable situation prevails. The sale of new naira notes in the open market and motor parks appears to be on the increase with ‘dealers’ charging as much as 20 per cent commission to change used notes to crispy mint ones. This is happening despite the subsisting legislation banning such activity in Nigeria. National Mirror investigations revealed that the sale of freshly minted notes is largely driven by the culture of “spraying” at social functions in which relatives, friends and well-wishers shower celebrants and musicians with naira notes as a mark of solidarity and to underline their status as well-to-do. This practice has long been classified as “abuse” of the national currency but sustains a micro-industry of its own run by unscrupulous bank officials who sell the notes to dealers at a 10 per cent premium of face value. The dealers in turn sell at an extra 10 per cent to willing patrons. For example, a bundle of N100 notes with face value of N10,000 is sold for N12,000 in used notes. Alternatively, a patron will get N8,000 in mint notes for N10,000 used notes. Investigations also showed that the illegal trade is being carried out in the public, even in the presence of police officers at event centres, hotels and motor parks where people travelling to attend social functions “load” themselves with mint notes ready for spraying. Our correspondent observed that currency notes favoured by patrons were the lower denominations such as N10, N20, N50, N100 and N200, depending on the spending power. As a result of the illicit trade, bank customers hardly get paid in new notes even if they make such specific demands. Some hawkers selling new naira notes to guests attending a wedding reception around St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos, penultimate Saturday told our correspondent that they got the new naira notes from the banks through a special arrangement. “This is my business so I know where to get my goods. MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecoms operator at the weekend replied the Etisalat Nigeria, another operator, on the switch of popular comic actor, Hafiz Oyetoro better known as Saka from Etisalat commercial advertising to appear as a model in MTN’s mobile number portability (MNP) commercials. Industry watchers say MTN’s reply has brought a new dimension to the pent-up clash between the two telecommunications companies, now in a tugof- war over Saka. According to MTN, the purported move by Etisalat to ‘port’ Saka back to the UEA operator’s network after a ‘marketing coup’ which saw Saka porting from MTN to Etisalat, is ‘wishful thinking.’ Speaking on the matter MTN Corporate Services Executive, Mr. Wale Goodluck told National Mirror that MTN management had read in some dailies and online platforms that an operator was planning to port Saka to its network. “This move is extremely unlikely that Saka will port back because he is comfortable with MTN network. He’s got a contractual commitment with MTN and on the basis of that, I don’t see Saka breaching that contract,” he said. The Lagos State Government has said that plans are underway to procure hi-tech software vehicles to enhance traffic and transport management in the state. Speaking at the workshop on traffic signalisation and synchronisation, the Commissioner for Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa, said the move was to take transportation management from present analogue to a more sophisticated and scientific based mode. He said the one-week workshop was aimed at sensitising state traffic managers on rescue and incidence management, traffic signalisation and synchronisation, road safety audit and hi-tech traffic management systems. About 400,000 persons are living with the Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) in Rivers State, according to a university lecturer, Dr. Bassey Fiebai. Dr. Fiebai also decried the rising HIV cases among youths in the Niger Delta. Dr. Fiebai is a Senior Lecturer, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Port Harcourt. The lecturer spoke during a health awareness campaign organised by an oil giant, Total E&P, in Eneka and Rukpokwu communities in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Fiebai, however, decried the stigmatisation of those infested with the virus, despite repeated efforts by relevant agencies against such behaviour. Quoting a figure by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Fiebai said about 34 million people are living with the disease worldwide, while over four million people were said to be infected with the virus in Nigeria. The lecturer disclosed that a recent study showed that eight percent of the figure in Nigeria (four million) were living with the virus in Rivers State, adding that that the prevalent rate in the Niger Delta is higher than the national figure. The National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized drugs worth several millions of naira meant for the free healthcare programme initiated by a National Assembly member, Senator Babafemi Ojudu. Although Ojudu did not disclose why the drugs were seized, he appealed to NAFDAC Director-General, Dr Paul Orhii, to intervene so as facilitate the release of the items for the use of the beneficiaries. The lawmaker, who spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti at the commencement of the two weeks free health programme, expressed hope that the drugs would be released in the next two days, saying the medical team had sufficient drugs to last for about three days. Ojudu said the exercise billed for the communities in Ekiti Central Senatorial District was to enable the people know their health status and as well attend to their health challenges. Just finished reading an interview with Gov. Gabriel Suswan of Benue state. In the interview, Suswan called one of his colleagues, Gov. Aregbesola of Osun State, unprinted names for recording the proceedings of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum election. Below are excerpts from the interview: The Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, is facing leadership crisis after its election in May. What is your take on the crisis? The Nigerian Governors’ Forum is a voluntary forum; no governor is under compulsion to be a member of that forum. In fact, the governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, hardly attends its meeting. The only meeting he attended was this last one that they said they were holding the election where unfortunately he was the one who recorded and sent a video on internet. We never had such level of irresponsibility of a colleague recording activities of colleagues and sending it on You Tube. That was the first meeting that he was attending. What I am trying to say is that no governor is under compulsion to attend the forum. Those who conceived the idea of governors having a forum was for us to be able to do peer review of ourselves. The fallout of the NGF election has polarised the Northern States Governors’ Forum. What is really the situation? There is no pretence about my position. I will find it difficult to sit in a meeting with leaders who after taking a decision, will do something else. It is difficult for some of us to sit in meetings with people like that. And so, it is true that the Northern Governors’ Forum is polarised. It is polarised because it is no longer honourable to meet as a people to take a decision. If people can do that, then most of us don’t see reasons why we should sit in such a meeting because before, any decision that we take was a collective decision and in this instance, we took a decision and some people did something different. Of course, Yuguda said something and I think I fully associate myself with the views expressed by him. We need to check up ourselves otherwise it will be difficult for us even the Northern governors to trust ourselves again because people will not be ready to sit in a meeting and discuss something knowing that what other people will go out and do will be different from what we jointly agree on. Lagos State Government yesterday said it had identified distressed buildings in Mushin where a threestorey building collapsed on Tuesday. The house located at 38 Amu Street claimed the life a year-old boy and injured several others. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olutoyin Ayinde, said the building might have caved in as a result of old age, adding that other identified buildings in the area would be subjected to integrity test. He said: “Although there is no proof that the building was marked for demolition before, with this, we have been able to discover more buildings that require integrity test in the area.” Ayinde blamed the recurrent building collapse in the state on the violation of the building regulations. He said: “It is unfortunate that many people turn themselves to experts in the building sector. With this one, we have been able to discover more buildings that are in distress which we have to take inventory of. Over time, we have been short-changing ourselves through illegal building. “As we speak, some buildings are being erected with substandard materials and we have some that require rehabilitation; people should just inform us.” Ayinde described Lagos as a low line area surrounded by salty water which most of the builders use in mixing their cement. This, according to him, weakens the structure over a period of time. Lt. General Alani Akinrinade (Rtd) was one of the major actors in the June 12 struggle. The former minister (Agriculture, Transport, Water Resources), Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Staff suffered personal losses as an active member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that fought the military to a standstill. Recently, he spoke with AYODELE OJO and SINA FADARE on the June 12 struggle, his losses, and state of the nation. Excerpts: Today is the 20th anniversary of June 12, 1993 election, is there any lesson to be learnt from the historic presidential poll? I think apart from anything else, it was a torturous time for Nigeria, because it was the culmination of the disillusionment of the people against military rule and all forms of dictatorial tendencies. Therefore we are all looking for a form of government which we would all be part of. That was the hallmark of June 12. Even it was all agreed that the April 2011 elections were not as good as June 12. June 12 signified the determination of a people. Irrespective of their background, religion, cultural affinity, Nigerians spoke in one voice on what they needed and who should be their leader. Death did not allow Chief MKO Abiola to prove whether we were right or not in the action we took on the crisis, but the struggle stands on its own. It is the catalyst that enabled us get to where we are today. Do you think the democracy fought for has been achieved today? People have a lot of divergent views on whether we have actually got democracy or not. But to me I would say no, because a situation where we get freedom of movement, expression, and right to live, yet our leaders are not accountable to us, then we still have a long way to cover. The so-called representatives of the people whom most of the time are selected instead of being voted for are not accountable to the people. Therefore, democracy has fallen down on the face. Virtually everywhere you turned to in the public sector is wanton corruption in high places. When Kaduna Nzeogwu and his colleagues had the first coup, the politicians who were then accused of corruption were not in such a massive magnitude to what we are witnessing today. He was talking about corruption of the ‘ten percenters,’ but what we are witnessing today is embarrassing and there is no limit to it. Based on this, I will say we are not yet there, but what we have now is a resemblance of democracy. Democracy is what you use to make sure that people who are put into position of authority are accountable to the people? Unfortunately they failed woefully on this. What is your regret on June 12? Abiola’s death is regrettable with all he put into the struggle to make sure that we are liberated. We just killed him and that is highly regrettable. Again to those who died during the struggle, especially those who were not known and were not sung, who lost their lives in order that democracy should be restored, and to say that here we are after 20 years with the situation remain virtually the same before the struggle, it is regrettable. Before June 12, there was the Afenifere in the West, which was strong to articulate the problem of their people, the Middle Belt Forum, the South-South and the Ijaws had the opportunity to get together in 1992 to form the Central Committee of Understanding (CCU) with the notion to see what we can do after the madness of the military and return the country to democracy. We have a lot of people there like TY Danjuma, Dan Suleiman, Joe Garba and Afenifere people, both old and young. We therefore agreed that we are going to campaign for anyone that meet our standard no matter where such a person come from, and such a person should meet us. That was my main encounter with Abiola, having met him for five minutes in his house earlier in 1975. We met about 15 people and Abiola came out with a vision. His vision about Nigeria tallied with ours that was why we decided to galvanise support for him to achieve his goal. Therefore to see that election annulled was an affront on us and the people. So, we confronted the military and damned the consequences. Text of the proclamation speech by the late M.K.O. Abiola on Saturday, June 11, 1994, announcing the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) at Epetedo, Lagos. People of Nigeria, exactly one year ago, you turned out in your millions to vote for me, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But politicians in uniform, who call themselves soldiers but are more devious than any civilian would want to be, deprived you of your God-given right to be ruled by the President you had yourselves elected. These soldier-politicians introduced into our body politic, a concept hitherto unknown to our political lexicography, something strangely called the “annulment” of an election perceived by all to have been the fairest, cleanest and most peaceful ever held in our nation. Since that abominable act of naked political armed robbery occurred, I have been constantly urged by people of goodwill, both in Nigeria and abroad, to put the matter back into the people’s hands and get them to actualise the mandate they gave me at the polls. But mindful of the need to ensure that peace continues to reign in our fragile federation, I have so far tried to pursue sweet reason and negotiation. My hope has always been to arouse whatever remnants of patriotism are left in the hearts of these thieves of your mandate, and to persuade them that they should not allow their personal desire to rule to usher our beloved country into an era of political instability and economic ruin. All I have sought to do, in seeking dialogue with them, has been to try and get them to realise that only real democracy can move our nation forward towards progress, and earn her the respect she deserves from the international community. However, although this peaceful approach has exposed me to severe censure by some who have mistaken it for weakness on my part, those with whom I have sought to dialogue have remained like stones, neither stirred to show loyalty to the collective decision of the people of their own country, nor to observe Allah’s injunction that they should exhibit justice and fair-play in all their dealings with their fellowmen. Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday launched the Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, with an assurance that the residents of Lagos State would soon abandon kerosene stove. Launching the Eko Gas in Surulere, Lagos, Fashola said LPG would now be the preferred choice of fuel and source of power in the state, urging the people to key into the project by embracing the use of gas. The governor said the project would eliminate the hazards faced by the people such as kerosene explosion and respiratory diseases common among those cooking with firewood and charcoal. He said: “That is the simple message. This was what we used when I was a child. We are back to the beginning. This was where we started. This is an initiative for the vulnerable people of the society who depend on firewood and charcoal to cook their food daily. “For us as a government, the commitment to raise the standard of living of the poor people remains heightened. Cooking gas is no longer the preserve of the rich in Lagos. Indications have emerged that over 100 buildings located in the valley near Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government may be demolished as the Lagos State Government yesterday ordered issuance of quit notice to the residents. It was learnt that the government’s move may not have been unconnected with the picture of the aerial view of the community published in national daily at the weekend. The picture revealed the likely danger for the community and the risk it portends to lives and property. Hence, the Lagos State Building and Control Agency (LABCA), Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government held an emergency meeting after inspecting the swampy community. They said the buildings lack approval and could no longer be allowed to occupy the place. At the meeting held behind closed doors, plan on the modality for evacuating residents and the demolition of the structures was drawn. Speaking after inspecting the community, LASEMA General Manager, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the move was to avert a looming disaster. He added that the agency would begin enumeration of the structures to know the number of residents to be affected. Oke-Osanyintolu said: “We have moved here swiftly with our stakeholders, LABCA, an agency in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the affected council to form an action committee in less than 24 hours, we give the state the report of the findings. The Presidency has described former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as an ethically-challenged hypocrite and an ingrate. In a statement issued yesterday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, rejected Ribadu’s claim at a lecture in Kaduna on Saturday that Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan was a sinking ship in which the yearnings of the masses were being neglected by a tyrannical leadership. Abati said the claim by the presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the 2011 general elections was hypocritical and self-serving. Petroleum products marketers may soon stop fuel importation, raising the prospects of another scarcity as unpaid subsidy arrears hits about N170bn. The unpaid subsidies have piled up due to stringent verification process after a legislative audit last year uncovered a widespread fraud in the fuel subsidy regime. A breakdown of the current figures showed that while subsidy arrears to be paid to major marketers, including Total Nigeria Limited, Oando Nigeria Plc, Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc and Conoil Nigeria Plc amounted to N100bn, that of independent marketers amounted to N70bn. The Executive Secretary, Major Markers Association, Mr. Thomas Olawore, who confirmed the development in a telephone interview, said that the huge indebtedness had impacted negatively on their operations. He said: “Our capacity to import has greatly reduced, meaning that it could get to a point where we can no more be able to do so. “Some banks have started to complain about nonpayment. But many of them are busy calculating their interests, which the marketers are expected to pay.” He said it was in the best interest of the nation for the government to pay the subsidy, stressing that it would enable marketers to import more fuel for domestic consumption. Olawore said: “Marketers have in the past five months tried to sustain importation in order to ensure there was adequate fuel supply in all parts of the nation because of patriotism. An elder statesman and former presidential candidate of the Nigeria Advance Party (NAP), Dr. Tunji Braithwaite has called on the Federal Government to set the machinery in motion for the convening of a Sovereign National Conference by next year when Nigeria’s amalgamation law of 1914 would expire. He said this will enable the people to make a constitution of their choice in governing the country. Speaking at the weekend at the 154th Founder’s Day Thanksgiving of the CMS Grammar School in Lagos, Braithwaite declared that the constitutional amendment being carried out at the moment by the National Assembly is an exercise in futility as any amendment made to that constitution now would also expire, come 2014. He said: “The reality today of that amalgamation is that both in legal and political contexts, it is bound to expire in 2014 by effluxion of time, unless the people concerned now voluntarily agree to its terms or modify them. “Let the word go forth that the simpleminded proposal of the Goodluck Jonathan administration to celebrate the century of Nigeria’s amalgamation in 1914 by the fiat of Ida British colonial officer is precisely a disgrace to the present generation. “What is there to celebrate? It would have been a different thing altogether if we, as a nation, were celebrating founding father’s birth of a nation that has over the years blossomed into a strong, cohesive and socio/political vibrant force in the comity of nations. The reverse is the case here. We, therefore, call on President Jonathan to perish the idea of this disgraceful celebration.” He advised that this generation should rise to the occasion of Nigeria’s centenary to finally destroy its last inglorious relics and simultaneously birth a modern and progressive nation, instead of clinking glasses of champagne, celebrating and venerating a bad history of enslavement. Braithwaite warned against tinkering with the constitution to give all elective office holders extra two terms across board and retain immunity for corrupt office holders as this, according to him, will be igniting a social and political tinder box. “They will be trampling underfoot, the Nigerian people’s sovereignty. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Adaku Onwwuliri, broke down in tears yesterday for her late husband. She said that her family had not been compensated by the management of Dana Airline. Viola Adaku is the widow of the former Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Prof. Celestine Onwuliri, who died in June 3, 2012 Dana air crash which occurred at the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State. She spoke amid tears shortly after a one year remembrance service in honour of her late husband at the Good Shepherd Catholic Chaplaincy on UNJOS campus. The minister urged the airline management to reach out to other Nigerians who were affected in the crash. Stressing that the incident threw her family into a serious challenge, the minister said: “We have no link with Dana Airline management, we have not seen the management and we have no contact with them, so that is how it has been. I just hope that they will reach to other Nigerians that were involved. “From the day of the incident on June 3, 2012, we have been feeling bad and the pain is still there. “We thank Nigerians, the President and the First Lady and others for their support and condolence. Though we are still in pain, we appreciate the support of Nigerians and thank God for His enablement that has kept us up till today.” Praising her late husband for his contribution to the development of education, she said: “I want Nigerians to remember him for his kindness, patriotism, hard work and for the expansion of the educational sector.
