PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has said he suffered with depression early in his career and once missed a match for Juventus due to a panic attack.

Buffon has enjoyed an incredible career which has so far seen him win 23 major trophies — including a World Cup — and he is still fighting to win his first Champions League medal at the age of 40.

But, despite enjoying success from an early age, there have been difficult moments for the ex-Italy international — in particular during his early period with Juve.

“For a few months, everything just stopped making sense,” Buffon told Vanity Fair.

“It seemed like no one cared about me, just the footballer I represented.”It was like everyone was asking about Buffon and nobody about Gigi. It was a really difficult moment.

“I was 25, riding the wave of success but one day, before a Serie A match, I went to Ivano Bordon, the goalkeeper coach, and told him: ‘Ivano, get [No. 2 goalkeeper Antonio] Chimenti to warm up and play. I’m not feeling up to it.
“I had suffered a panic attack and was in no state to play the match.”

However, Buffon said it was important the situation reached this point as it allowed him to move forward.

“If I had not gone through this experience, that cloud and that turmoil with other people, I may have never have got out of it,”

he said. “I had the clarity of understanding that it was a watershed moment between giving up and confronting those insecurities we all have.

“I was never scared of showing them nor of crying — something which happens to me and of which I am not at all embarrassed.”

An 81-year-old retired soldier, Richard Ogunboyo, has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for the murder of Felix Esan in Ekiti state.

The convict, Richard Ogunboyo, who was the head of a vigilante group in Iyin Ekiti, when he committed the crime on December 15, 2016, in the community.

According to Punch Nigeria, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, in his judgement, said the charge of murder against the convict could not be substantiated, but a case of manslaughter was established.

“Considering his age and the discretion of the court, he is hereby sentenced to 25 years imprisonment without an option of fine,” Ogunmoye ruled.

The police prosecutor, Seyi Akomolafe, had told the court that an eyewitness, who reported the matter at the Igede Divisional Police Headquarters, said the accused and other vigilante members in Iyin Ekiti came to the deceased’s compound on the allegation that a thief was taking refuge in the house. He said;

“Ogunboyo sighted the deceased and confronted him for being rude and disrespectful because he refused to stand up while a search of the compound was being conducted.

“Furiously, he brought out his dane gun and shot the deceased, while he took the remaining four people in the house to his own house, where he detained them till daybreak when they were released.

“When the others got home, the deceased could not be found. When Ogunboyo was confronted over the missing member, he said his relations had come to take him away.

“But there were blood stains on the floor and indications that he was dragged on the floor. The corpse of the deceased was later found in a deep pit along the Awo-Ekiti Road.”

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Ekiti State, Mr Gbemiga Adaramola, called seven witnesses, including the Investigating Police Officer and a medical doctor from the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, who carried out a post-mortem examination on the deceased.

Exhibits tendered included pictures of the deceased’s composed body and others taken at the scene, statements of the convict and eyewitnesses, and the medical doctor’s report.

Ogunboyo, however, pleaded not guilty to the one count of murder preferred against him.

His counsel, A. T. Lawal, called five witnesses to prove his client’s innocence.

The counsel pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy “as the accused was only discharging his duties.”

A husband allegedly shot his wife and her parents after discovering her sex tape with best friend.

William Brian Stillwell, 39, opened fire on the three family members in front of the couple’s five-year-old twins on New Year’s Day in Melbourne, Florida, police say.

In a graphic 911 call believed to be made by the wife, Mona, Stillwell can be heard telling the twins that he loved them before shots were fired.

The young children, a boy and a girl, can also be heard pleading with their dad to stop shooting their mother.

‘No, daddy. No. I don’t want anyone to die,’ one of the children said, according to WFTV. In the call, Stillwell can be heard accusing his wife of cheating on him.

According to police, Stillwell told police that he saw a video of his wife, who has not been named, having sex with his best friend.

He told officers that she was ‘a LovePeddler and he saw her cheating on him…with his best friend on a recorded video on her phone.’ All three adult victims are in the hospital are reportedly in stable condition.

Neither of the children were harmed in the shooting. According to police, the children escaped the home and ran to a neighbor’s house for help.

‘I don’t know how the (wife’s) father got involved, but he got shot,’ said neighbor Phil McMahon. ‘He came over to my house, told me to call 911.

He got shot in the hip, was bleeding.’ Stillwell’s wife and children had recently moved to her parents house after the couple separated last week.

McMahon said his wife was friends with Stillwell’s estranged wife and she had having problems with her husband, so she was staying at her parents.

‘She was in pain, and I know she had been shot twice. I just hope she’s ok,’ McMahon said.

Stillwell surrendered peacefully to Melbourne police after the shooting, according to Melbourne police Lieutenant Shawn Eising.

He was charged with three counts of attempted felony murder, two counts of child abuse, armed burglary and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony Stillwell is being held at the Brevard County Jail without bail.

Some suspected smugglers have killed a Customs Assistant 1, Hamisu Sani, and injured another officer, Tijani Michel, at the Asero area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the operatives attached to the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area Command, on Sunday, were on a routine anti-smuggling patrol in an attempt to seize eight vehicles loaded with smuggled rice and kept in the Asero community.

It was learnt that the suspected smugglers, in a bid to resist the customs officers from seizing their vehicles, laid an ambush for them, leading to the death of Sani due to the grievous injuries he sustained in the encounter.

An inspector of customs, who also sustained machete cuts, is recuperating in the hospital.

The spokesperson for the command, Abdullahi Maiwada, in a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta on Monday, confirmed the incident, saying the dead officer had been buried according to Islamic rites.

He vowed that the command would ensure that the perpetrators “of this devilish act are brought to face the full weight of the law.”

Maiwada added that two suspects had been arrested by the police in connection with the incident, while the eight vehicles loaded with the smuggled rice had been secured.

The statement read in part, “Unfortunately during the encounter, one of the officers, a Customs Assistant 1, Hamisu Sani, sustained grievous injuries and paid the supreme price in active service. He has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

“Also, an Inspector of Customs, Tijani Michel, sustained serious machete cuts but is responding to treatment in the hospital.

“Meanwhile, two suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the incident and the eight vehicles fully loaded with the smuggled rice have been secured at the Customs House, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

“While we commend the patriotic role of our sister agencies and law abiding citizens, we wish to categorically state that we will deploy all necessary apparatuses to ensure that the perpetrators of this devilish act are brought to book to face the full weight of the law.

“Finally, the recurrence of such form of hostility and intimidation by smugglers and their accomplices on our officers and men will never distract us from vigorously discharging our statutory functions.”
