The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is satisfied with the electoral process as the polls closed across the country for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
A national commissioner of the commission, Festus Okoye, gave INEC’s impression of the polls at a briefing of journalists in Abuja. “As at this moment, INEC is generally satisfied with the process and the procedures for the conduct of this present election, notwithstanding the challenges relating to the commencement of polls in some polling units.”

Despite the delay or malfunctioning of the Smart Card Readers, the commission said accreditation for voting can only be done as stated in its guideline.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the presidency of releasing over N6 billion “looted from federal funds” to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly candidates to rig the rescheduled February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The director, media and publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan made this allegation in a statement on Tuesday, February 19, Daily Trust reports.

Ologbondiyan said “each of the 109 APC senatorial candidates received N20 million, the 360 APC House of Representatives candidates are being given N10 million each, while various amounts are being disbursed by the Buhari presidency to some other APC leaders for the rigging plot.”

The opposition further alleged that the “looted funds” are to be used by the APC to dress fake security agents, arm thugs and bribe compromised INEC officials to manipulate the elections in the various senatorial and federal constituencies across the country.

It also claimed that part of the money was sourced from the alleged diversion of funds meant for the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various states of the federation.

The party added that other sources of funding included monies allegedly syphoned from some income generating agencies, like the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The statement partly reads: “At a time well-meaning leaders all over the world are exerting themselves in creating wealth for their people and developing their nations, the Buhari presidency, which plunged the nation into a bitter economic recession, is still busy frittering our national resources to finance its vicious plots against the already impoverished citizens.”

News on the failing health of veteran actor Baba Suwe hit the internet yesterday and one other veteran in the industry, Mr Latin has responded swiftly to the situation.


Mr Latin, the National President of the Theatre Arts and Motions Pictures Producers Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN, in his reaction, denied rumors that the actor has been abandoned.

According to him, the medical bills of the actor is something the association has been taking care of since 2017.

He said:

“I have just instructed the Lagos State executive of the association to check on him (Baba Suwe) to ascertain his health progress.

Kaduna state gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Isah Ashiru has urged the state government and security agencies to fish out and prosecute those involved in the killings of villagers in Kajuru area of the state.

Ashiru, in a statement he issued in Kaduna on Monday, expressed shock by the report of the murder of innocent people, describing the situation as unfortunate.

”This unfortunate incident is not only an unwanted addition to the list of the past similar ones, but is also a clear indication that insecurity still remains a huge challenge in some parts of Kaduna state.

“The fact that the loss of human lives has been confirmed makes the whole issue terribly shocking.

“The act clearly smacks of callousness and a descent into barbarism.

“This will require a tremendous determination and demonstration of a sense of justice and fairness on the part of the authorities whose responsibility it is to not only deal appropriately with the perpetrators of such acts but to also forestall their recurrence.

“Let me quickly remind my dear good people of Kaduna State of the need to embrace peace and eschew violence so that the diversity with which Almighty God has endowed us can be harnessed for the good of all of us.

“Our state is big, bountiful and rich enough to accommodate all of us; all we need to do is to continuously remind ourselves of the fact that resorting to violence has never benefitted us as a people,” Ashiru said.

He urged people of the state to “endeavour to come together, regardless of political, religious or ethnic differences, to let the world know that we are committed to ridding our state of violence

“At the same time, we must be willing to live as true brothers and sisters that we have always been.

“While we condole with the bereaved families, I also wish to re-assure everyone again that my bid to clinch the governorship of Kaduna state is driven by both an immense concern for our people and a total determination to rescue the state from misrule.

“I, therefore, wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, people of Kajuru local government area as well as the government and the entire people of Kaduna state over this unfortunate incident.

“It is my fervent prayer that Almighty God who created those souls will expose the perpetrators of the heinous act.”

It would be recalled that unknown armed men had on February 11, attacked and killed 66 persons including children and women in eight settlements in Kajuru local government area of the state.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it was shocked by the last minute postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 16, 2019.

The labour union advised the federal government to declare a two or three-day public holiday to enable workers travel to cast their votes following voter apathy that may have greeted the postponement of the elections, The Nation reports.

The president of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, in a statement said many Nigerians would not have been able to vote due to logistics problems if the election held.

“We at the Nigerian Labour Congress join other Nigerians in expressing our shock at the last minute postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 16, 2019,” Wabba said.

“We share in the pains of those who in an uncommon show of patriotism, had to travel long distances to perform their civic duty. We similarly understand the outrage of those who had incurred huge and unquantifiable logistic costs. No explanation will be good enough given INEC’s repeated assurances and the zeal of Nigerians to cast their vote.

“However, given the fact that had the election taken place, a huge number of Nigerians would have been disenfranchised on account of gross and wide-spread logistic deficit, the postponement, as painful as it is, is a lesser evil of the two.”

The NLC urged Nigerians not to be disillusioned by the postponement but brace up for the rescheduled election.

Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino have all declined to perform at the 2019 Grammy awards holding on February 10 in Los Angeles.

Their refusal to perform has been linked to the way the producers of the Grammy Awards treat the HipHop community.

Last year, Jay-Z who had the highest nominations with 8 nods failed to go home with a single award. Kendrick Lamar, though winning all five awards in rap categories, lost the Album of the Year award to Bruno Mars.

The Head of Awards of the Recording Academy, Bill Freimuth, has responded to the issue saying they are viewing it with diligence.

“We certainly have been listening to the community with these concerns,” said Freimuth. “The difficulties that our voters have every year is that there are so many excellent recordings, and I think this year that number increased even more.”

“As always, we only have so many nominees in every category,” he continued. “So, you know, it’s never easy to tell what’s going to be nominated because we have got so many [voters] that are professional music creators, they’re coming from all types of different genres and different disciplines and varied experiences.”

Ken Ehrlich, the longtime producer of the Grammy telecast, told the Times:

“The fact of the matter is, we continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world.

“When they don’t take home the big prize, the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad.”

Mrs Rita Korankye has stated that being a pastor’s wife is really a lonely journey. The wife of Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, the Founder and General Overseer of the Royal House Chapel in Ghana revealed this to Lexis Bill on the Personality Profile on Joy FM, Thursday.

“Every woman wants to be a pastor’s wife but it can be a lonely journey”.

She also revealed that one of her wishes growing up and due to her passion for kingdom business was to become a member of a religious community of women.

“I had always wanted to be a Catholic nun…It’s something that I wanted to do…,” Mrs Korankye Ankrah revealed.

Rita Korankye who landed a job as a banker later resigned on the advice of her boss. According to her, when the boss listened to a tape of her sermon, she advised her to resign because banking wasn’t her calling.

“After she listened to my preaching she advised me to resign. ‘This is not your calling, go and help your husband’s ministry’ she told me,” she recounted.

A mother has been left heartbroken after her 16-year-old daughter was shot dead in their home after she had gone to a bar to have fun.

The South African woman identified as Skhonzile Mtshali said when her daughter came to fetch her at a tavern, saying she was scared to sleep alone, she sent her back home.

Her daughter named Mbali was later shot dead while asleep in their apartment.

The 35-year-old from Lindelani squatter camp in KwaThema, Ekurhuleni, South Africa, said she wishes she could go back to Friday night.

“My daughter is gone. I will never see her again. I wish I had listened to her. If I had,, my daughter might still be alive,” she said.

“I usually go to the tavern and come back late. She opens for me when I knock on the door.”

Skhonzile said she thinks on Friday, Mbali might have sensed something was wrong. She said when she returned home at 4am on Saturday morning, she found Mbali had been shot in the head while sleeping.

“I walked to the police station to tell them my daughter had been killed.”

Captain Thabo Sibuyi said a murder case was opened.

Bollywood actor and Arsenal fan Esha Gupta has written an apology letter to the London club’s Nigerian forward Alex Iwobi.

The Bollywood star came under severe criticism from all quarters after sharing a racist remark directed towards Iwobi on her Instagram account. Esha Gupta quickly deleted the post, but her followers had been quick to take a screenshot of it. She did post a hastily written apology but that too fell on deaf years as Twitter users and Arsenal fans continued to slam her.

According to IANS, in her letter to Iwobi, Esha Gupta wrote: “I am extremely sorry for my ignorant action last Friday. Being an ardent fan of many years, I was deeply engrossed and caught up in the game.”

She said she “clearly did not realise the racial undertone” from her friend’s message, which she had shared on Instagram last week.

“For this, I am deeply regretful. I cannot begin to imagine how much I have hurt your sentiments. Racism has absolutely no place in my heart, and I promise you, for whatever it’s worth, going forward this will never happen again,” she said.

Gupta also wished Iwobi forgives her for her “careless action”.

She even penned a letter to Arsenal FC, wherein she wrote: “I hope the club can accept my humblest apology and give me the opportunity to make amends. I promise to be very responsible from here on.”

Meanwhile, Iwobi has been named the third best U-25 midfielder in Europe’s top five leagues in one key stat.

An Indian man has called out his parents for giving birth to him without his consent.

Raphael Samuel, 27, said his parents created him, not for his sake, but for ‘their joy and their pleasure’. He compared having children to ‘kidnapping and slavery’.

Samuel, a self-proclaimed ‘anti-natalist’ in India, believes procreation is a ‘supreme act of evil’ and that life which has not given its consent to live should not be brought into the world.

Speaking to The Print, Raphael said:

I love my parents, and we have a great relationship, but they had me for their joy and their pleasure. My life has been amazing, but I don’t see why I should put another life through the rigmarole of school and finding a career, especially when they didn’t ask to exist.

Raphael, from Mumbai, runs the Facebook page Nihilanand where, he shares numerous images and he asks his followers to consider why they are alive.


One of his post reads:

Your parents had you instead of a toy or a dog. You owe them nothing. You are their entertainment.

In another picture he writes:

The only reason your children are facing problems is because you had them.

In another, he asks:

Isn’t forcing a child into this world and then forcing it to have a career kidnapping and slavery?


The anti-natalist movement has emerged in India as younger people attempt to resist societal pressure on them to have children.

Pratima Naik, 26, from Bengaluru, who is at the forefront of the anti-natalist movement and also committed to never having children, supports Samuel’s beliefs.

He said:

We don’t want to impose our beliefs on anyone, but more people need to consider why having a child in the world right now isn’t right.


On his page entitled Childfree India, Pratima Naik wrote last month:

Should we continue to bring more children in this world and accelerate the process of environmental and social degradation?

Do you think existence is pain, and not bringing a child into this world, is a guaranteed way to avoid unnecessary suffering to the child?

Fellow activist Alok Kumar, 34, has begun a YouTube channel where he aims to spread awareness on child-free living. He decided to remain child-free after deciding the world was not a conductive place for raising a family. He is now looking for a woman who, like him, doesn’t want kids.

APC’s governorship candidate in Kwara, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak had to be escorted away from a rally in Ilorin on Sunday after suspected political thugs fired bullets into the crowd leaving at least two persons seriously injured while vehicles damaged as thousands fled the scene.

The Nigerian Police Force confirmed the attack in a statement by spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, affirming that the thugs went on the rampage in Ilorin, Kwara and disrupted a rally being held by the All Progressives Congress.

“As we speak, the situation report from Kwara State Police Command was that the APC holding a Governorship campaign rally at Agbaji in Ilorin came under a sudden attack by suspected PDP thugs, who disrupted the rally, damaged five vehicles and some Keke Napep and wounded two innocent people”, police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said.

According to The Nation, there was also another attack on APC supporters in Ile Aiyelabegan, a short distance from the Agbaji homestead of the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Veteran actor, Dele Odule, has advised other actors against flaunting wealth on Instagram, with the belief that it misleads the younger generations.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Dele Odule believes that there are many actors in Nollywood who really have no business being in the industry.

“People like that are not in the business because they have passion for it. They are just looking for where to make ends meet. A trained actor will never run after material wealth. I am not saying that acting cannot open doors; it actually does.

However, a true actor will take material things as secondary; the priority is to get your message across to the viewers. The problem we are facing is that the industry is not sanitised. If there was a standard, many of those people you see who are all about flaunting material things on social media wouldn’t be in the industry.

What is the essence of going on social media to flaunt cars and other items? You would see many actresses dancing around on social media; even when they get pregnant, they flaunt it. Buying a car shouldn’t be a big deal but they make it seem as if it is.”

Commenting on the effect such acts would have on young ones, Dele said,

“They are passing a wrong message to the young ones out there who will have a warped impression of the industry.”

Drawing a line between following politicians for pecuniary gains and for the good of the country, the former TAMPAN president said,

“Somebody who is serious-minded and creative would not run after any politician. That is not to say that actors don’t have the constitutional right to follow whoever they like.

However, you have to follow rightly. You have to know the reason you are following the person. (Hubert) Ogunde followed Awolowo and we all know that the latter was a politician who did a lot for his people.

But now, actors just follow politicians because of money. I don’t really like to talk about this because some people may feel that I am talking this way because I have not had the privilege to mingle with such people. I have the opportunity but my passion for the industry is beyond unnecessary things.”

An 18-year-old Grade pupil at Vorentoe High School, committed suicide at her home in Klipspruit, South Africa after allegedly being bullied by teacher.

Nicole Mnguni took her own life on Tuesday, January 8, after returning from the school to fetch her report, which they allegedly refused to give to her.

She left a note which details the alleged abuse by the teacher. She also stated she wanted peace and to be with her father.

Mnguni is said to have been a victim of harassment and bullying by her teacher, and the school is aware of the case, but had allegedly not taken any action to address the case.

Her mother, Jessica Mnguni is demanding justice. She told Soweto Urban she could see that her child’s self-esteem was dead.

“Nicole is so bubbly but that woman killed her self-esteem, so she couldn’t take it. There was a time I went to the school, this teacher asked, are you Nicole’s mother?
“I said yes… She said your child, I was even shouting at her, she’s not doing well in class. I don’t know why she doesn’t drop it, and she’s not going to be anybody in life. I am not hurt, I am finished.”
