The 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army has reacted to a story entitled, “Soldiers allegedly kill 35 year woman in Plateau” in both on line and traditional media.

The report stated that, “A 35 years woman, Sarah Edward Nyam, was allegedly shot dead in Fwapwa Doi village of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday night by men of the Nigerian Army”.

The Headquarters in its response issued by Kayode Ogunsaya, Colonel Deputy Director of Army Public Relations stated categorically that the report was a “deliberate falsehood and an attempt to portray the Division in bad light’.

I wish to state that contrary to the report the soldiers were in the Dura -Du district and its environs from Monday 15 October – Wednesday 17 October 2018 to provide security to the sniffer dogs deployed to assist in locating the where about of the missing retired senior officer, Major General Idris Alkali (retired) and not on Friday 19 October 2018 as reported by online and traditional media.

Please be informed that on completion of the mission, the troops and sniffer dogs returned to the barracks on Wednesday 17 October 2018. The troops did not engage anyone in fire fight because the entire district has been deserted. No soldier fired any shot. All the ammunitions were duly accounted for by the troops.

The write-up further insinuated that soldiers, “stop people from accessing their homes, bungle their shops, eating our chickens and goats, ransack our homes”. This is not also true. This Headquarters had earlier warned residents who fled their homes and business premises to go back and continue their legitimate activities to avoid their respective homes and business premises from being broken into by miscreants/ hoodlums.

The reading public is hereby advised to disregard the news story as it is the antics of the fifth columnists to prevent the Division from locating the where about of the missing retired senior officer. This Division will leave no stone unturned in order to locate the where about of the missing retired senior officer despite the antics of the fifth columnists.

Consequently, this Division wish to warn online and traditional media as well as agents of fake news and other like minded mischief makers that 3 Division will no longer tolerate publication of fake news that are injurious to the hard earned image and reputation of the Division in particular and the Nigerian Army in general.

In view of the above, you are please requested to publish this rejoinder in order to correct the erroneous impression your publication has created in the minds of the good and peace loving Nigerians. Thanks for your usual co-operation.

Reality TV star Bambam has opened up on how she felt after her eviction from Big Brother Naija, BBN and according to her she felt so much relieved of the entire stress and happenings in the house.

She made this revelation in a new interview with Sunday Punch, where she also talked about her educational background, career and future aspirations.

Read excerpts from interview below:

Background

I am the first of two children born into a religious family; I have a younger brother. My father was in the military and my mother is a retired nurse.

My father was a diplomat and that afforded us the opportunity to travel around the world. At different times, I lived in the USA, France, UK, and other countries in Europe. I have great memories of my life as a kid but I have more memorable experiences as an adult. I had a basic upbringing and our parents were very protective of us.

Education

For my elementary education, I attended Nigerian Navy Primary School, Apapa, Lagos State. I went to La Folie St. James, Paris, France, for my post-elementary education. I got admission to Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, as a medical student, but later got a direct entry admission into The Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, where I bagged a second class upper degree in Microbiology.

Acting

I got into the movie industry when I came to Lagos from Abuja in 2017 and enrolled at the Royal Arts Academy. While in school, I featured in my first movie titled, The Backup Wife, by Uduak Isong, where I acted alongside Seun Akindele and Bimbo Ademoye.

Big Brother Naija

I auditioned for the previous edition of the reality show in Abuja but didn’t make it in. After film school, I decided to give it another shot; this time, in Lagos. I remember the night I got called; I was actually house-hunting. I’d just finished film school and wasn’t sure I wanted to go back to Abuja. Although I was a bit nervous, I was still very excited.

I didn’t believe I could get called, especially because I was quite different from other contestants at the audition. Getting into the house, I was homesick for some days but because of my adaptive nature, I was able to get by. Sadly, when there was tension in the house, it sort of wore me out. I didn’t enjoy the negativity that went around. When I got my eviction from Big Brother Naija, it felt like a gush of fresh air.

Parents’ reaction

My parents were not supportive of me going into the house but I was doing the exercise for myself and over time, they got to understand that. Of course, they weren’t excited that their child was in a reality TV show but as a grown up lady who is responsible for her own decisions, they got to respect that.

Challenges

The only challenge I’ve had since leaving the house is trying to balance my new reality, though nothing has really changed. The hustle is the same but there’s just a bigger platform that has put me out there to be known and seen by more people.

Fame

Fame has made me more grounded because there’s the likelihood to get carried away if one is not careful. I like to pride myself as a planner and dreamer; an ambitious person. Before film school and Big Brother, I had made up my mind to achieve my goals and BBN was a means to an end for that. I wouldn’t say fame came to me by surprise; I wanted to be picked.

Other interests

Big Brother is in the past but I’m still acting. I’m also an entrepreneur. I own the Bam Beauty Product line. I am working on a partnership because money must be made and it would be nice to stay relevant for a long time.

Although acting is my first love, I can’t depend solely on it. Luckily, with running my own businesses, I cannot succumb to silly demands in the industry. I’m seen as a style and brand influencer, among other things.

Role models

Some of my role models are Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey, Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Theresa, and Mo Abudu. Jesus Christ is a big mentor also, because He spent all His life doing good and it is my desire to be a blessing like Him.

Hobbies

I love watching movies and travelling. I also love having great conversations and interestingly, I love spending time with puppies. I like painting and singing as well. Of course, you can’t take away the joy of spending time with loved ones. Finally, I love to learn new things.

Fashion

I am a creative and expressive person, so I see fashion as an extension of myself. What I wear defines my mood at any given moment. I am generally attracted to comfortable and smart outfits. Sometimes, when I’m in the mood for it, I could choose to go in dramatic outfits, like what I wore to the AMVCA 2018.

Philips, who recently got some major endorsement deals, said she never knew she would be honoured by those endorsements at that age.

“I never expected all the endorsements that I have right now; I am amazed at the grace of God over my life,” she added.

A family friend has been accused of absconding with couple’s children in in Akwuke village, Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The lady identified as lady, abducted Mr and Mrs Anthony Onyedika’s children Chisom and Chidindu, aged four and two, respectively. While the whereabout of the lady said to be family friend of the Onyedikas is still unknown, it was gathered that she fled with the two children from their parents’ residence on October 8, 2018.

The distraught mother of the kids who spoke to Punch’s correspondent, disclosed that Ifeoma was with her kids when she went behind the house to urinate. However when she returned, she could not see the ‘family friend’ and her children.

According to Mrs Onyedika, she had refused allowing the lady take her children to church for prayers. She further disclosed that it was after she refused allowing the lady take her kids to church, that Ifeoma made away with the two kids.

Ifeoma who was spotted moving out of the compound with the couple’s children, is from Nsukka in Enugu State, and reportedly lived with an unnamed boyfriend in the same neighbourhood with the Onyedikas. Her boyfriend disappeared from the area a day after the alleged family friend, also fled the area with the kids. A search at the apartment which was broken into by residents of the area, revealed that all the property had already been moved out.

The grief-stricken mother who disclosed that they’ve reported the incident to the police, added that initially, calls to Ifeoma’s mobile telephone line went through, but she did not answer. The state Police Public Relations Officer Mr Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said that the police were currently investigating the matter.

“The police are working on it. It is a case of child stealing reported on October 8, 2018. One Mr Anthony reported that a lady who visits his family took the kids away. Investigation is ongoing,” Amaraizu said.

Sprint legend Usain Bolt has expressed surprise after being handed a drug testing notice despite retiring from athletics and having no professional contract.

Bolt who quit athletics last year and is yet to be offered a professional contract by Australia’s Central Coast Mariners, where he is currently on trial, took to Instagram to share a video of the notice.

Sharing the video, he wrote;

“So guys I’ve retired from track and field looking to become a footballer but look at this,”

The demand for the out of competition test — to collect urine and blood — appears to have been issued by Football Federation Australia.

“How am I going to get a drug test today? I’m not even a professional footballer yet. Seriously,” said Bolt.

“So I asked the lady, ‘Why am I getting drug tested when I haven’t signed for a club yet?’ and she said they told her I’m an elite athlete so I have to get tested. Okay then.”

Despite his displeasure, it appears the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority guidelines mean he is eligible to be tested.

Their legislation defines an athlete as a “person who competes in sport” if “the sport has an anti-doping policy”.

The eight-time Olympic champion, who dominated sprinting after taking double individual gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, is now bidding to become a professional footballer.

He made his case on Friday by scoring two goals for the Mariners in a pre-season friendly.

The superstar, a massive Manchester United fan, has been handed a chance to train with the A-League side for an indefinite period in order to pursue his dream.

Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has filed a lawsuit against the ruling APC for disqualifying him as a governorship aspirant in Oyo state on account of not presenting the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme discharge certificate.

The National Working Committee had on September 27th (read here) disqualified Shittu from the Oyo state governorship primary after it was reported on a news platform that the Minister did not participate in the mandatory one year NYSC scheme when he graduated from the faculty of law from the Obafemi Awolowo University in 1978. He graduated at age 25 and failed to observe the mandatory one year service.

65-year-old Shittu, had in his defence, said upon his graduation, he contested for a seat in the state House of Assembly and won. According to him, serving in the state House of Assembly should suffice for his NYSC certificate. Read here.

In the suit filed by his counsel, A.U Mustapha, Adebayo asked the court to declare that the submission/presentation of NYSC Discharge Certificate to APC is not part of the requirements for him to participate in the primary election for Nomination of Governorship candidate of the party in Oyo State for the 2019 General Election. He asked the court to determine five issues. They are:

*”whether by the provision of Section 2(1) of the National Youth Service Corps Decree No. 24 of 1973 and/or any other provision of the Decree being the law in force as at 1978 when the Plaintiff graduated at the University of Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) he was under any legal obligation to have warranted the plaintiff’s participation in the National Youth Service Corps in the absence of a call-up instrument duly served on the Plaintiff by the National Youth Service Corps.

*”whether, by the combined reading of Sections 176-183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [as Amended] and Article 20(iii) & (iv) of the Constitution of the All Progressive Congress; it is a condition that the gubernatorial aspirant of the 1st Defendant (APC) and/or any political party for that matter in Nigeria must present the National Youth Service Corps Discharge/Exemption Certificate;

*”Whether it is ultra vires the powers of the 1st defendant to have disqualified the plaintiff from participating in its primary election for nomination of the governorship candidate of the 1st defendant in Oyo State for the 2019 General Election on the ground that the plaintiff does not possess National Youth Service Corps Discharge/Exemption Certificate;

*”Whether it does not amount to denial of fair hearing as enshrined in Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution of as amended for the 1st defendant to have purportedly disqualified the Plaintiff from contesting for governorship election in Oyo State under the platform of the 1st defendant without availing the Plaintiff an opportunity to be heard on the allegations that the plaintiff avoided the National Youth Service Scheme; and

*”whether by the combined reading of the provisions of Sections 147(5), 65(1)(b) & (2), 66 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 12 of the National Youth Service Corps Act, Cap N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, the plaintiff was qualified to have been appointed as a Minister capable of holding the office, and/or any other governmental office at any level notwithstanding the fact that he did not participate in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme.”

The court paper further reads

I was liable but not obligated to have participated in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme both at the time I graduated from the said University and as at the time I was called to the Nigerian Bar.

“I know as a fact that no “call-up instrument” was served on me as at 1978 when I graduated from the said University by the National Youth Service Corps to have warranted my participation in the scheme.

“I know as a fact that I was also not served any Notice or notified in any manner to proceed to participate in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme.

“I know as a fact that participation in the National Youth Service Corps programme is not one of the requirements to be satisfied under the 1st Defendant’s constitution to enable me participate in the primary election for Nominating the party flag bearer for the office of Governor of Oyo State in the 2019 General Election. A copy of the Constitution of the 1st Defendant is hereby attached and marked as “Exhibit SHITTU 8”.

“I also know as a fact that under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Amended) it is not a requirement for me to have participated in National Youth Service Corps Scheme to be eligible for participation in the 1st Defendant’s primary election for Nomination of its flag bearer in Oyo State for the 2019 General election.

“I know also as a fact that the Electoral Act 2010 [as Amended] did not make participation in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme a condition precedent for contesting any elective office whatsoever.

“I know also that participation in NYSC Scheme is not one of the requirements to enable me take part in primary election for Nomination of the 1st Defendant’s flag bearer for the office of Governor of Oyo State in the 2019 General election.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, have confirmed that they are expecting their first baby by Spring of 2019. Kensington Palace made the announcement of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry getting set to become parents.

The statement from Kensington palace reads;

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.
“Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”



Meghan sparked pregnancy rumours when she stepped off the plane in Sydney in the past 12 hours. She was carrying two hefty purple folders that royal experts say are notes about the trip, but many speculated that she was shielding a baby but from view. It was further gathered that palace officials are pleased with the news.

The report is coming few hours after we reported, that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were caught up in a mid-air scare when their private jet was struck by lightning.

The royal couple were travelling to an opening party in Amsterdam last month when the luxury Dassault Falcon 7X was reportedly struck. According to the Mail on Sunday, a bolt of lightning struck the nose cone, narrowly avoiding the navigation equipment. Around 30million volts surged through the plane’s fuselage.

Former governor of Akwa Ibom State and former minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has said that his “heart was with President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 presidential election.”

Akpabio who was a PDP governor for two terms in Akwa Ibom state, said this when he led a group of Elders from his state to see President Buhari at the state house Abuja yesterday September 17th. Akpabio who was minority leader of the senate, defected to APC in August.

Akpabio at the meeting said that throughout the PDP’s 16 years in office at the federal level, “there was not even one kilometre road project by the central government in Akwa Ibom.”

Akpabio, who was Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, boasted that he would deliver Akwa Ibom for APC in 2019.

” What remains of the PDP in Akwa Ibom state was mere carcass as the body and soul of the party had joined the APC” he said

The tenure of the State Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola will be coming to an end in a matter of days after serving for 2 terms and it is a must that another person takes over the state mantle of leadership.

This is why Lekzyloaded wants to who you think will be the next Governor of Osun?

There are 48 candidates and parties gunning for the position but there are only 5 contenders with the rest being pretenders as we have in every election in Nigeria and we will be limiting our say on the topic to those 5 contenders.

1. Sen. Iyiola Omisore (SDP)

Sen. Omisore is perhaps the oldest Governorship candidate in Nigeria, he has contested, either passively or actively in every Governorship contest in the state since 1998.

He is a blessed politician with huge financial acumen.

The Former Deputy Governor of the state and a 2 term Senators left the PDP for the SDP months ago when the Centre can no longer hold and despite that, he has shown to be a force to reckon with in the incoming contest.

The Ife born Engineer is in for a serious battle and he is not a pushover anytime any day!

2. Alhaji Fatai Akinbade (ADC)

Alh. Akinbade remain the longest serving political officer holder in Osun.

He served as a commissioner under the military government, he served as a local government Chairman, he was once the State Chairman of PDP and later served for 7-year as the state SSG, all of these spanning over 16 years. He is an experienced politician of note.

In 2014, he took his first shot at the Governorship position under the platform of Labour Party and polled only a spares vote of 8,874 votes.

He started this year Governorship race with the PDP as an aspirant, but came a distant third with a paltry 56 votes and eventually dumped the party.

However, he is contesting this time around under the platform of a party with more national tentacles, ADC and he has the support of the former Governor of the state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola as well as that of the Former President, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo.

3. Alh. Gboyega Oyetola (APC)

The APC candidate is the favourite to win this election on paper as things stand and the reason for that isn’t far-fetched, the party is the ruling party in the state, across all the Local Governments in the state and even at the Federal Level.

They are not short of human and material resources to prosecute this ambition.

Alh. Oyetola who is the immediate past Chief of Staff to Governor Aregbesola is a businessman of great repute who spent 30 years in the Private sector before his appointment in 2010, he is a financial guru, he is also rumored to be the cousin of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Jagaban is known to be a politician with the midas touch.

The combination of all of these means that other political party will be at their best to defeat him.

However, one thing that will affect his chance is the glaring lapses of the present Governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Aregbesola, especially in the area of payment of salary and pensions.

4. Alh. Moshood Adeoti (ADP)

The Iwo born politician is a politician of great repute, he is a typical seasoned politician who has served in many capacity for the past 30 years. He was the state SSG until his resignation 2 months ago.

He was one of those that show interest in taking over from Governor Aregbesola in the APC but left the party 2 months ago after the fallout of the primary election that produced Oyetola.

The former Chairman of the defunct ACN is known to be a party man and that was why his switching of political party from APC to ADP came to many has a surprise, he left the party with his arrays of loyalist which includes but not limited to former cabinet members, current serving state assembly lawmakers among others.

However, he is also the candidate with the most impediment in this race. First, many see him as a selfish politician and a man who is concerned only about his personal interest, wondering how he deemed it fit to leave the APC after serving as the SSG for over 7 years.

Another problem he is encountering is the fact that, his political party, the ADP has no National significance or structure, existing only on paper and in OSUN state.

But one thing that may work in his favour which Adeoti has been banking on is the issue of zoning. He is from Osun West, the zone that has been clamoring for the Governorship position.

If that is however enough to win the race remain a question that will be answered in a matter of days.

5. Sen. Ademola Adeleke (PDP)

The Senator representing Osun west Senatorial district at the red chamber emerged the PDP candidate in a controversial way which till date posses a great problem and challenge for his ambition.

The man, popular called ‘The Dancing Senator‘ is not only running under a well structured political party, PDP but also from the richest family in Osun state and a family that is respected by all and sundry.

Sen. Ademola Adeleke is the brother of the late Senator and Former Governor, Isiaka Adeleke as well as the popular Business mogul, Dr. Deji Adeleke.

He is an uncle to the sensational hip-hop artist, Davido and therefore, he is not short of both internal and external contract to pursue his Governorship ambition.

However, one thing that will go a long way against him is his certificate scandal.

The certificate he presented to INEC is a WAEC certificate and the results of the WAEC shows that he has F9 in mathematics and pending in other subjects as a result of being absent.

That he has not deemed it fit to obtain an education degree since 1981 when he sat for WAEC is really a catastrophic situation for him.

The elites, higher institution dons, and students of various higher institution of learning will most likely not vote for a man who has a poor WAEC that remain a subject of litigation.

In addition, PDP has lost many heavyweight politician, which includes but not limited to Sen. Omisore, Rt. Hon. Adejare Bello, Alh. Fatai Akinbade, Prof. Adeolu Durotoye among others and there are strong indications that Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi who lost the PDP primary election in a controversial manner to Sen. Adeleke by 7 votes will as well bow out of the party.

All these are worrisome situation that can dent the chance of the PDP who presented a man with a dented image.

However, the bright side is that, the PDP has a very powerful National Campaign committee led by the popular Jack Bauer of Nigeria politics and the nation number 3 citizen, Sen. Bukola Saraki.

PDP is a threat in every part of the country and they are expected to be a party to look forward to as the September 22nd election in Osun draws nearer.

The Lagos state police command have arrested two self-confessed members of a notorious cult group, Olakunle Ogunyemi, popularly known as Pedro, and Anthony Bello, popularly called T-boy, for the murder of an Austrian returnee, in Iba Housing Estate, Lagos State.

The deceased, Micheal Chinenu, who visited Nigeria to have his traditional marriage, was allegedly stabbed to death during a fight with the suspects at a football pitch in Iba in 2016.

According to reports, the deceased had gone to the football pitch to play football with a group of boys in his neighborhood. During the match, an argument ensued between the deceased and Ogunyemi which degenerated into a fight.

When it became clear that the deceased was overpowering the latter, Bello allegedly used a knife to stab the Austrian returnee in the chest, in his bid to assist his colleague. The duo immediately fled the scene, abandoning their opponent to his fate. Chinenu died a week later from complications that arose from severe loss of blood.

After two years of investigation, the suspects were recently arrested by operatives of the Federal Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS), Lagos State Police Command, in their hideout. Bello, a.k.a. T-boy, admitted to have stabbed the deceased in self- defense.

While confessing to the crime, he said

“I went to play ball at the football pitch when I heard an uproar. On reaching the scene, I saw a man engaged in a scuffle with Pedro (Ogunyemi ). In my attempt to intervene, the man slapped me. He left Pedro and faced me. He hit me on the ground twice and used a tyre rim to hit me. In defense, I rushed to an orange seller where I collected a knife and stabbed him in the shoulder. I managed to escape from the scene and went into hiding when I heard he was dead. In my hideout, I turned new leaf and got married. I thought the case must have died down since it’s been long it happened. I was at home with my wife and child when the police came with Pedro to arrest me.”

Ogunyemi, who is the only son of his widowed mother and an OND holder from the Lagos State Polytechnic, disclosed that he joined cultism at the age of 17.

“He (the deceased) came and said I should ‘free’ Lexi, so that they could leave the field. I pretended not to have heard him and continued the discussion with Lexi. He repeated it again and I asked who he was and where he was from. This degenerated into quarrel before Bello came. I did not know how the deceased died but all I could remember was seeing him on the ground because other boys on the field took me to a corner to pacify me and prevented me from going to where the fight was going on. I later left Lagos for Ghana to hide, for fear of being arrested over the death of the man. I stayed there for sometime before I returned to Nigeria, only to be arrested.” he said

The Police say the suspects would be charged to court later today for armed robbery, cultism and murder.

Zainab Ahmed has been appointed acting Minister of Finance, following the resignation of the immediate past finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun.

Recall that Adeosun resigned yesterday following the scandal surrounding her NYSC discharge certificate. In his statement of acceptance of her resignation letter, President Buhari announced Zainab Ahmed, as the acting Minister of Finance.

55-year-old Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed holds a degree in accounting from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a master’s in business administration from Ogun State University, Adeosun’s home state.

It is believed that Ahmed, who is the daughter of Governor El-Rufai’s foster father, Yahya Hamza, will hold the position only on a temporary basis until the National Assembly reconvenes and Buhari is able to send a replacement for senate screening.

Until her appointment, Zainab was the Minister of State Budget and National Planning. She has previously served as the executive secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the extractive sector watchdog.

In the spirit of Eid-El Kabir, Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has freed 170 prisoners serving jail terms across the state saying the gesture was to complement the federal government’s efforts to further reduce congestion in the nation’s prisons.

The governor also gave each of the freed inmates N5,000 as transport fare to their destination. “You are part of the people who need our attention at this time and all other times,” he said.

The governor said that the gesture was to complement the federal government’s efforts to further reduce congestion in the nation’s prisons. Ganduje said that President Muhammadu Buhar‎i had directed all governors to help in decongesting prisons across the country.

The governor also disclosed that since the inception of his administration in 2015, about 2000 inmates have been released. He advised the ex-inmates to change their attitudes to life and pray for peace and stability in Nigeria.

Some of the freed inmates commended the state government for the gesture and promised to shun crimes. The inmates also presented the governor with gifts for his efforts in freeing prison inmates in the state.

In an interview with BBC Yoruba, the governor said

According to human rights activist, Kola Edokpayi, the woman identified as Joy Ose Uwadiae, the Proprietress of Ben Victoria Academy unleashed her dog to attack her former Bursar, Miss Faith Amedu for collecting practical fees from the JSS 3 students without her consent.
“Amedi Faith is not presently healthy as a result of the pain inflicted on her by the Proprietress agents and the dog.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Muhammadu Modibbo has urged the federal government to ban unemployed Nigerians from traveling to the country in search of jobs, to save Nigeria’s image.

Modibbo made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Makkah, Saudi Arabia saying ”I have sent a letter through the Foreign Affairs Ministry for government to ban such people from coming here (Saudi) because they are suffering. I am also appealing to Nigerians to try as much as possible to get something doing in Nigeria instead of coming here because it is not easy. Thousands of people from various countries have left here”.

He said that the embassy was also concerned about the increasing cases of women working as maids that are being abused, and some unscrupulous Nigerians involved in drug trafficking.

According to him, the embassy has been intervening in cases of drug pushing by some Nigerians, adding “there are many Nigerians on death row for the offence. There are many cases before I assumed office eight months ago; I always intervene but there is not much I can do even though we have some little successes. Many of them have been here for many years working and will not return home but if they are arrested, they are deported instantly.”

He blamed some agents for the woes of many Nigerians working in Saudi companies and other organisations. “The agents manage to get passports and Visa for their clients and when they have problems, they come to the embassy daily. Some countries have banned their citizens from coming to work here because of problems being faced in Saudi Arabia. So why are Nigerians coming to face these hardships.”

Lagos State Government has said the Third Mainland Bridge would be temporarily shut down for four days starting from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26 for “investigative maintenance test” to be carried out.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya who stated this in a statement today, said the decision was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

The four-day closure, according to Akinsanya, will enable the contractors assess the true state of the bridge after which repair works would commence by the end of the year or early in 2019.

“The Third Mainland Bridge which was opened about 30 years ago by the then military government has had haphazard maintenance and repairs in the past which the present Federal Government is committed to correct by carrying out proper and continuous maintenance and repairs on it,” said Akinsanya.

Consequently, the state government appealed for the cooperation, support and understanding of all motorists and residents, advising them to minimize non-essential travel and movements during the four-day closure.

Akinsanya said all traffic management agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police, among others, have been mandated to ensure smooth flow of traffic on all the other alternative roads and traffic corridor across the metropolis to ensure free flow of traffic.

The Akwa Ibom State Command in conjunction with the Military and the Department of State Service (DSS), has rescued an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and eight other victims who were held captive by suspected kidnapping syndicates in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas of the state.

The state Commissioner for Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, who disclosed this during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo on Saturday, said that they combed the forest and rescued a total of 9 kidnap victims, including an INEC staff, Mr Otobong Sylvester Ukpong, six elderly women, two men and a 14-year old girl.

According to him, this was in continuation of the operation of 16 August, 2018, where a young boy of 9 years old, Joseph Monday Udo of Ikot Inyang Abia in Ukanafun LGA, and a yet to be identified young lady who is presently in coma, were rescued.

In that operation, the police boss said, a police officer, Sergeant Sheddrach Stephen, was gunned down, and a rifle belonging to the slain police officer and various other items including bulletproof vests, and ammunitions were recovered.

Narrating their ordeals, the victims said that the hoodlums took them into the forest and held them captive demanding varying amounts ranging from N500,000 to N10 million naira each to gain their freedom, while those whose relations could be contacted to bargain their freedom, were condemned to death, until the police combed the forest and rescued them.

The INEC official, Mr Ukpong, said that he was on his way to work on that fateful day (5th June, 2018) when about three fully armed men on motorcycles accosted him and dispossessed everything he had including his money and mobile phones, and beat him up before covering his face and took him into the thick forest. They demanded the sum of N10 million as ransom for his freedom.

It would be recalled INEC in the state had earlier threatened that elections would not be conducted in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun LGAs if its staff, Otobong was not rescued.

The ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to urgently reconvene the National Assembly to enable the passage of the Electoral Amendment Act Bill.

The APC in a statement released by its acting national publicity secretary, Yekini Nabena, on Friday, August 17, said the Electoral Amendment Bill is alive and waiting assent.

Nabena also alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party is hiding under the “yet to be signed bill” to draw attention away from the treasonable actions of the Senate President for refusing to reconvene the National Assembly.

He said: “The Electoral Amendment Bill passed by the National Assembly is alive and awaiting assent. However, assent to Bills in all democratic governments reflects the prudence and discretion of the president in balancing the powers of key constitutional bodies and understanding the concerns of the executive.”

“While we strongly condemn the abuse of office by the Senate President backed by his PDP cohorts in sabotaging the executive, specifically INEC, all well-meaning Nigerians have a duty to speak up and ensure that the National Assembly performs its constitutional role and not serve an individual’s personal interest and sinister ends of the opposition PDP.

We call on all Nigerians, civil society and indeed the international community to resist the ongoing travesty and legislative rascality being perpetuated by the Senate President and the PDP.

The sanctity of our electoral system is being threatened by this orchestrated sabotage and deliberate attempt to weaken INEC as we prepare for General Elections in 2019. The National Assembly must be convened immediately,” Nasbena said.

The APC’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on lawmakers of the ruling party to do all within their powers to ensure that the National Assembly reconvenes.

This call came after Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara adjourned plenary in July shortly after the police laid a siege to the residences of the nation’s number three citizen and Ike Ekweremadu, his deputy.

Oshiomhole, however, criticised the adjournment, adding that it is slowing down the progress of the current administration.

Two contestants of the popular inter-tertiary beauty pageant, Face Of USAG, have drowned at the Cape Coast beach during a photo shoot session.

The incident, which occurred between the hours of 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, August 16, 2018, comes after the contestants defied orders from the Dean of Students of the host school, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), against the organisation of the pageantry.

The two, who have been identified as, Sara Kwarteng and Lily Ampofowaa Asiedu from the University of Education, Mampong campus and the University of Ghana, Legon, respectively, drowned as a result of high tides.
