LordTrezy: Good morning guys, woke to a mail from my admission advisor 3 days ago. I've been admitted for masters program at university of Concordia, Edmonton. Please how do I go about my visa processing and I would love to meet anyone in that school for more information.
NB: If you know anything about this school kindly drop by, I need information please.
Cheers guys Hi, The big question is have you gotten your official admission letter? If yes then you can proceed with visa application. Otherwise, just learn all you can about the application process while you wait for an official letter. Congrats on your admission. Cheers! Lemia |

Hello dearest Nairalanders, I need help with some things.
I have three major issues that I need your opinions on.
1. For the Visa Application, I'm planning to use my dad as my sponsor. The problem now is that he retired September last year so he's not earning much. Just pension. His statement of account has a balance of about 3M don't know if that would be sufficient alongside my funding which I was told would cover my tuition and living expenses.
2. As a young male of 24 years who happens to be the first child and considering I'm still even carrying out my NYSC and I have no personal assets how best do you suggest I go about proving home ties to the visa officer and convince them I would return to Nigeria.
3. What is the total estimated cost for international passport, visa application and medicals?
I need as many opinions as possible. If you have any suggestions, please share!!!
Thank you so so much for your much anticipated quick response. God bless you all!!! |

Hello house!
I've seen a number of written documents being submitted as part of visa application and it's looking a little confusing. I would very much appreciate if some could give very simple explanations on the differences between the following documents.
Letter of Explanation (LOE) Statement of Purpose (SOP) Letter of Sponsorship Study Plan |

Lemia: Hi guys, great job so far with the help.
I have another inquiry and I'll love expert opinion.
I applied to the University of Waterloo some time ago for admission in Fall 2018. I got a reply from my supervisor that I've been accepted into the masters program with full funding and the admission letter and funding details will be sent to me later.
Considering the relationship I've built with my professor, he stated that he wants me to come to Canada in May( 4 months before resumption) and begin work with him and get a good grip of research before school resumes but I told him it would be impossible as I'm currently serving and would finish in late June or early July.
The question I'm asking now is how possible will it be for me to goto Canada in July when my program starts in September?
Would my travel be covered by my student visa (which I don't even know how long it might take to process) or would I have to apply for a visiting visa for the two months before my program starts?
I would really love your opinions guys. I would really love to get the opinion of more people on this issue. Thanks guys |

minaty: Hello Lemia, I want to know if you got a supervisor first and then paid the application fee after Hi, Schools like University of Toronto are extremely competitive so you definitely have to secure a supervisor first before you apply and pay application fees. It's almost certain you won't be admitted for a research based program if you don't get a supervisor. Unless you probably have a perfect GPA, amazing letter of intent and awesome letters of recommendation and even at that, it's not certain. Also I must say that some departments don't require you to get a supervisor first so you have to find out what the requirements for your department are. Getting a supervisor is a very difficult task when you're looking to get funding from the professors but if you're funding yourself or you have an external scholarship, it's way easier. You just have to state it in the email. All the best man. See you in Toronto soon enough. |

HiredGames: Lemia, let me add my 2 cents as I know a thing or two about Canada school ranking.
I really don't know how Tier 1 or Tier 2 universities are named but University of Waterloo is a top school. Ranks in the top 150 universities in the world and Number 7 in Canada. Their engineering programs however is ranked second "only" to University of Toronto.
Like Jnyuwa02 said, don't apply to only two schools, especially when they are the top two ranked engineering universities in Canada. Your first class, although "very" juicy and attractive may not be enough.
I'd advice you play it safe. Apply to some other schools (Possibly Alberta and Calgary).
Good luck getting the attention of Potential supervisors there. Thank you very much boss. I'll consider your advice |

ogirl1: Waterloo is strong on the engineering side. Waterloo grads dominate even in silicon valley. Toronto is expensive to live Consider that. Cheers Nice tips. I'll put those into consideration. Thanks |

jnyuwa02: You are applying to two great schools, one a first tier the other a second tier. It looks like you are going to get into Waterloo the second tier school if the supervisor said already that he will fund your studies. But do not attach too much faith in it as no one professor enjoys such monopoly in making admission decision. What this simply means is that he probably sits on the admission committee and going to put in the good words for you when the committee meets to makes it funding and admission decision. It's possible you get it, it's possible you don't. I know a person on this forum who was promised funding by a supervisor only at the end of the day, for the professor to recant his promise. But with a first class, sounds to me that you are more likely than not not to get into Waterloo. Makes sure you write strong statement of intent and research proposal.
Concerning Toronto, it is first tier school, probably one of the most competitive place to get into in Canada. It and McGill. You might also want to look at McGill. If you can only afford to pay application fees to only two schools, McGill has a waiver of the application fee. But only after you have paid it first. Lol. You can request a waiver of the application fee that you have paid at McGill based on financial hardship.
Lastly, don't apply only to first tier schools. They see many first class applicant and turn them away. You can distinguish yourself among top applicants by what you have to say about yourself. Your statement of intent and strength of your research proposal defines winners among an equally qualified applicant pool. That is what the professor at Toronto meant by his decision would be based on several things. I am not too positive that you can get into Toronto as I do that you can get into Waterloo. So the need to spread your tentacles and look more.
My advice is to keep emailing professors at second tier schools. University of Calgary, University of Ottawa, etc. Burrow more money if you can to pay application fees to two other places. Don't put all eggs in one basket just to be safe at the end of the day. Better to be safe than sorry. I wish you the best. Thank you very much for your well curated response. I'll consider emailing more supervisors. |

Hi guys, I've been going through this thread for a while now but now I need advice on certain issues. I'm planning to study by Fall-2018
1. I secured a supervisor at the University of Waterloo to study Systems Design Engineering (masc) and he agreed to fund my studies. I'm a First Class graduate of University of Ibadan. At this stage, what are my chances of getting admission and what must I do to make it happen.
2. I got a professor at the University of Toronto who said he only has funding for top applicants but looking at my profile, I'm clearly a top applicant but his final decision will be based on several things. The question is I have money to apply to only 2 schools. Is it smart to apply to UofT based on this current statement from the supervisor? Considering it's a very competitive school.
If yes, what do I do to ensure I get accepted by him and admitted. If no I'll have to continue emailing supervisors because I've not gotten any elsewhere and deadlines are fast approaching.
Thanks a bunch for the much anticipated helpful responses. |
