I played Chess back in the days. I even got a little book that analysed some classic games by popular Masters like Kasparov & Bob Fischer.

In all, I still regard Chess as a glorified draughts, or Advanced Draft like someone commented.
&I don't consider those who spend hours playing chess any different from idle folks who spend same hours playing Draft.
It's only those who don't understand Chess that look at chess players with awe.

Only advantage of Chess over Draft is if you're going professional where you'll participate in money-making competitions.

&back to the topic, Scrabbles remains better option for a kid.

I have never bordered to learn draught because of the type of persons I see gathered around where it is played. Chess is for sharp minded men and women and can't be compared to draught. Draught moves are one way patterned whereas chess has different pieces with different moves, you can be sniped at any moment and protecting yourself, hitting back at your opponent makes it all the fun. If a newbie goes to a draught joint, he will learn same day without anybody explaining to him but if you stand around chess play for years you might still get nothing except you are thoroughly tutored. One demands no skill, the other demands skills.

When I was young, I used to be very scared of hell especially when in church and the preacher narrated the horrors of hell, but now things have changed.
