Yar’Adua accuses lecturers of corruption
By Tunde Odesola
Published: Sunday, 21 Dec 2008
President UmaruYar‘Adua has criticised the scourge of corruption permeating the country‘s education system.

File
President.

He alleged that some lecturers engaged in illicit affairs with their female students.

Yar‘Adua, who spoke at the 36th convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Saturday, alleged that some lecturers collect money ranging from N250,000 to N500,000 from students in return for unmerited grades.

Represented by permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Goke Adegoroye, Yar‘Adua reiterated his administration‘s commitment to providing the necessary support to the academic community to enable it to play its statutory roles.

He said decaying facilities in the country‘s higher institutions had become a source of worry to his administration.

The president promised that his administration would soon embark on moves to check the decay.

Maintaining that the country‘s university system required considerable autonomy, the president stressed that government would not shirk its responsibility to education.

The President of Republic of Benin, Dr Boni Yayi, was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in science while the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, was installed the institution’s new chancellor. He also bagged an honorary doctorate award.

Yar‘Adua said he had directed the minister of education to ensure that the NUC and the security agencies fish out the bad eggs in the universities.

He said, ”The Federal Ministry of Education and the National University Commission are daily inundated by reports of various vices being perpetrated by those to whom the nation, not only looks up to for answers to its ills, but have entrusted with the responsibility of moulding the knowlege and character base of our children for the future development of our nation.

”These reports have graduated from the usual sexual harassment and sexual temptation to the bizzare. For example, certain universities recruiting and forwarding the names of hawkers and touts to the National Youth Service Corps for national service, while scores of genuine students who have completed their programme of studies are denied places and have to wait, sometime up to two years after graduation before securing a space.

”Some lecturers supervising students projects demand between N250,000 and over N500,000 from their students before their final year projects and thesis can be accepted. There are reports of swapping of grades and awarding of grades and even whole degrees to students that do not appear in an examination hall.

“Are we being honest to ourselves and to our nation? What character could such group of lecturers impact on our students? When will the certificates and degrees that universities award on the basis of having been found worthy in learning and character begin to live up to the highest level of the content of its intentions?” he asked.

He, therefore, called on all and sundry to rise to the challenge of correcting the ills in the society, adding that it is in the light of this that his government embarked on the seven-point agenda.

The Beninoise President in his remarks advocated regional integration that would lead Africa to accelerated development adding that Nigeria had assisted his country in various field, saying jokingly ”Benin Republic is the 37th State of Nigeria.”

He extolled the virtues of Chief Obefami Awolowo, whom the university was named after, expressing his happiness for being honoured in the university named after the late sage, describing Awo as a worthy son of Africa.

Dapo,
You have spoken well, you made your point(s), Its sad that the state of Labor has not much improved and that the collective lot of our people has not much improved over the past 9 years since the beginning of this Republic.
Politics stinks-If AD had performed the would not have been kicked out and also would not have entered the Satanic arrangement with OBJ to support him at the federal level whilst saying PDP should not field Gubernatorial candidates at the State level, naivety i say again.
AD's claim to be AWO's disciples leaves much to be desired, they were not in any way near the records Papa created. Those of us that our progenitors were of Egbe Omo Oduduwa/AG/UPN Caucus know this.
Dapo,if you read well into my posts, you should know that i am well informed.Theres no hearsay here.Pops lost out to Kolapo fair and square, lets let Adedibus soul alone. He was not the prefered candidate of SPD.Dejo Raimi and the party leaders did not support him.So how could he have won?
As per your argument that Labor was infiltrated to cause chaos, that is just incredulous.Pops treated them with disdain, never paid them on time and of course,if that was the case, how could he be supported by labor?
If you could back up the stats you quoted about Pops electoral figures,i would appreciate it.Pops was roundly defeated by Ladoja.Even if they rigged, the patronizing tone and utter rudeness and lack of courtesy he demonstrated during their televised debate was enough to turn the tides against him.
If Ibadan people get disenfranchised,1000 Adedibus cannot hold them.Pops did not perform and the populace was glad to be rid of their modern age Awoism.
Performance has nothing to do with reduced allocation.See BAT.Potable water, roads, good schools and what were not achieved. There was no judicious utilization of resources.period.So the argument tht their allocation was less than what applies today would not fly.
Dapo,
The future is bright, the skies clear, the birds chirping, history beckons,we as the younger generation must be aware of history,no matter if it stinks or is too bitter to swallow.
Go and achieve your destiny, but remember -politics is all about of service, service and service.People are getting to know this and the seismic shift from hand outs and gross incompetence is being eroded, Remember this as you go chase your dreams,
Salaam

Lewa, that was a good post u gt der,but we all need to stop acting on hear says.It is eating deep into the future of our nation and most importantly we youths.i would have loved you to confirm your gist before placing them online. Its not too good as you might be at the receiving end some day 2.
Sir, i find that laughable, are you denying the fact that your pops is a pensioner? Or that he refused to pay them their due even after sufering as one of them?Or that it was not Bola Ige that made sure your dad and Wura's dad(Bisi Akande) got the part's nomination as AD flagbearers in 1999?Your pops contested in the primaries during the time of Kolapo Ishola and how come he didnt win but got an absymal postion?
As a matter of fact because of the political naiviety of pops he told the people of the State that he did not need Ibadan to win, since Ibadan had only 11 of 33 local Governments. This he said when the Labor Unions told him they would show him at the polls and he countered by saying that and also that the members of labor were not enought to deliver to anyone, He was depending on Chief Koleosho, the then SSG and former AD State Chairmn to deliver Oke- ogun and othr LGs for him, If he had taken care of labor,he would not have said all these, but that was his character
Oyo State has gt 33 local government and you only have access to 5 which are the ones in Ibadan. It is only people that knows Oyo State well that can know how underdeveloped it was at a time before the man came to power.and his agenda was developing the rural areas which will reduce influx from rural to urban areas
Dapo,my antecedents can be traced to Ibadan,my grandfather and his siblings, though not from Ibadan, worked in UI.I went to school in Ibadan,my close pals are from Ibadan,i know you very well, starting from the first Honda Accord you drive,to the gentle brother-in-law you have.My cozs rolled with you, in your final year ,i was in Ibadan somewhere in Amina Way and you came around in a 406,to complain about your professors,
However,i believe that your tale is an open book, the sins of the father should and not be visited on the son,
Your dad did nothing concrete for Oyo State, apart from repainting the Verterinary Clinic for OBJ to commission on his Official Visit to Oyo State.
You dont need spin on the internet,if he did someone would have said so.
Go to the oke oguns, oyo, ibarapa and less city Ibadan and see what the man had done there.Good road network,Rural electrification, water, hospitals.education
This i have addressed. My friends worked with Dr Awojobi in Eruwa and with another Dr whose name i cannot recollect now in Igbo-Ora.I visited Ibarapa region myself.Theres nothing on ground to substantiate what you said, unless pops went this morning to execute those programs.AD was a monumental failure in the S/W.we all know this,
Also you cannot compare Oyo And lagos in terms of development and revenue as lagos was once the federal capital and you know what that means.
I have never done or posted so.You are definately not on point here. BAT utilized his resources well.He respected the populace and was not condescending towards them.He recognised the fact that the masses were indeed his last bastion against the PDP tsunami.Mind you OBJ gave him not a dime in 8 years for his LGs and still he performed.Mine is for you to borrow a leaf from him, that service to the people would justify your political longevity and not hand-outs to the people.
Dapo,i have nothing but the highest regards for you.I wish you the best as you aspire for greatness, but let service, integrity, industry be your companions on your journey.
Best Regards,
Lewa

I see nothing wrong on Dapo aspiring for the House of Representatives, it is his constitutional right and thus free to exercise that franchise.I know him from a distance, anytime i visited Nigeria, my cousins had something to say about him, youthful exuberance, any one in his shoes would have done same, only that indiscretion on his part and that his sibling really portrayed them in bad light in spite of the overwhelming poverty and decay in Oyo State.
His father did nothing concrete in terms of socio-economic development in the State. If he had it would have been difficult to get rid of him, his pops was also rude and quickly forgot his humble beginnings as a pensioner(did nothing for them) despite being one of their ranks and even was purported to have collapsed on a queue waiting for his pension.
Lam Adesina wouldnt have been Governor without Bola Iges input and he was warmed into the late sages embrace because of his hard stance against the late googled despot-Abacha, both were arrested during a demonstration to counter Abachas inordinate bid to be a permanent fixture in Aso Rock,
Dapo is free to contest and knowing Ibadan very well, he must have proven his mettle to be selected to run on the platform of AC for that particular district, We need young men in Government and my fear is that he doesnt go the way almost all of them do-forget the electorate and rule roughshod over them, Dapo should borrow a page from BAT,his uncle, politics should be about service, that is why AC is in power in Lagos today, and would always be,
All the best,

TOKYO — Police arrested a U.S. sailor Thursday in the stabbing death of a taxi driver near an American naval base outside Tokyo, officials said. It's the latest in a series of cases that have set off a furor about crimes allegedly committed by U.S. servicemen.

Olatunbosun Ugbogu, a 22-year-old Nigerian national serving in the U.S. Navy, was arrested on murder and robbery charges, a local police spokesman said.

He confessed to the murder and police plan to send him to prosecutors on Saturday for his indictment, the spokesman said.

Japanese officials reacted sharply to the arrest, which follows a furor over a series of criminal allegations against U.S. servicemen in Japan, where some 50,000 American troops are based.

The suspect, a crew member on the USS Cowpens, is accused of stabbing 61-year-old taxi driver Masaaki Takahashi on March 19 in Yokosuka, just south of Tokyo and the site of a large U.S. naval base. Police also accuse him of failing to pay the $190 taxi fare.

The police spokesman, who did not want to be identified by name because of departmental rules, said the driver was stabbed in the shoulder with a kitchen knife, causing him to die from blood loss.

The suspect had been in U.S. custody since Navy authorities apprehended him in Tokyo on March 22 on an earlier desertion charge. He was handed over to Japanese authorities just before the arrest under a bilateral security pact, Japanese Foreign Ministry official Takashi Ariyoshi said.

Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura summoned U.S. Ambassador Thomas Schieffer on Thursday, expressing regret over the crime and urging U.S. officials to improve discipline of American servicemen and step up anti-crime measures.

Schieffer also met with Yokosuka Mayor Ryoichi Kabaya, who said he was "enraged" over the alleged crime by a U.S. sailor. "We demand the U.S. take concrete measures so that crimes like this are never repeated," he said.

In a statement, Schieffer called the murder "a shock and outrage to all those who believe in a civilized society," promising to cooperate with Japanese authorities "in any way possible so that the murderer of Mr. Takahashi can be brought to justice."

U.S. Navy and Japanese authorities had questioned the sailor about the killing because a credit card in his name was allegedly found in the victim's car.

Japanese anger over the U.S. military presence has grown in recent months following an alleged rape in February of a 14-year-old girl by a U.S. Marine on the southern island of Okinawa that sparked large protests there. Japanese prosecutors dropped charges against the Marine and released him after the girl withdrew her complaint, but the U.S. military is continuing its own investigation.

Other alcohol-related incidents have inflamed sentiment.

Earlier in Yokosuka, a Japanese court convicted a U.S. sailor of robbing and fatally beating a 56-year-old Japanese woman in 2006 and sentenced him to life in prison.

In an apparent move to quell the rising anger, the Navy imposed limits Wednesday on travel and alcohol consumption by personnel at the Yokosuka base.

The limits started immediately and were to last at least through Monday when they will be reviewed, said Cmdr. David Waterman, a Navy spokesman.

Fire guts INEC headquarters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday said the fire that razed the office of its chairman, Professor Maurie Iwu, on Tuesday night did not affect its essential documents.

The Secretary of INEC, Alhaji Abubakar Kaugama, made this known in Abuja at the INEC headquarters while briefing newsmen on the fire incident which occurred at about 8.15p.m. on Tuesday.

Kaugama said the fire only affected computers, airconditioners, refrigerators and rugs, adding that there was no cause for alarm.

He said that INEC documents were not affected by the fire because they were concealed in fire-proof cabinets, adding that the main office of Professor Iwu was not affected by the inferno.

He said the computers that were destroyed in the office of Iwu's secretary were back up to the ones in Professor Iwu's office, suggesting that the commission would have no problem in retrieving its essential documents.

The INEC chairman was not around when reporters called at his office and had not made a statement on the incident.

About three offices including the visitors room were affected as the late night fire razed down virtually everything on sight in those offices.

At the office of Iwu's secretary which was affected, some burnt files and other property could be seen including cabinets which contained some INEC documents.

Meanwhile, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) on Wednesday in Abuja called for a public inquiry into the fire.

Senator Sa’idu Kumo, the National Secretary of the party, made the call while reacting to the incident during an interview with the News of Nigeria (NAN).

Kumo advised President Umaru Yar’Adua to set up a committee to probe the inferno with a view to ascertaining its immediate and remote causes.

He also suggested that the committee should recommend both preventive and disciplinary measures to forestall a recurrence.

The ANPP scribe described the incident as “very unfortunate and embarrassing on a day Mr President inaugurated the Electoral Reform Panel Nigerians to support the current efforts at repositioning the country.
