Na wah for Nigeria O! Do you guys remember that Harry Akande wanted to become president of Nigeria? With his billions of dollars, am sure if he'd been the one quitting office May 29th with a total asset in billions of Naira, Nigerians would have still shouted. You must enter a pauper and leave a pauper or enter a billionaire and leave a pauper. That is the way of the Nigerian Government official.
As per Harrys billions they exist only in the figment of his imagination~
Concerning Daniel ~hmmn he cannot say hes not enriched himself so far!Nigerians are not that altruistic as regards public service.

Anenih disclaims travails, berates Igbinedion
From Mike Osunde, Benin
FORMER Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, yesterday spoke on his purported political travails, declaring that "there is no pot big enough in Nigeria to contain and cook" him.

He also spoke about the eight-year administration of former Edo State governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, describing it as most tragic.

At a three-day retreat for the new men and women in Governor Oserhiemen Osunbor's team in his hometown, Uromi, Anenih alluded to a newspaper report alleging he was in soup.

He said: "At Okene in Kogi State this morning, I stopped to buy fuel on my way from Abuja. I bought some newspapers. One of them amused me. The headline was "Anenih in soup." I was wondering which pot can be big enough to cook me before I can become soup, at least not in Nigeria."

In his keynote address titled "Leadership, commitment and service," Anenih identified the bane of leadership in Nigeria as failure by those in power to remove themselves from the benefits of the offices they hold in trust for the people.

"Not only do we see ourselves as beneficiaries, we take more of the privileges and give less of the obligations," he said, noting that the consequence had been that the nation's leaders had been lacking in vision, focus, commitment, accountability and productive worth ethics," he said.

Anenih stated that at the federal level, reforms were being carried out to cope with the challenges of governance in the modern world in order to conform with the culture of transparency and accountability in matters relating to service delivery. He added that states needed to adjust to the new thrust in governance.

The PDP chieftain, often regarded as Mr. Fix It," descended heavily on the administration of Igbinedion, saying that the people had suffered most tragically from poor governance in the past eight years.

He bemoaned the effects of the past administration, which he said had affected all sectors, including security, adding "one is tempted to ask if, indeed there has been a government in Edo State these past eight years!"

Anenih remarked that the immediate past government must have totally ignored Section 14 (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that "the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government".

He, however, said that political leaders in the state shared in the blame of Igbinedion's mis-governance. "We, the political leaders must share from the blame for allowing the abysmal display of greed and avarice for eight years without hue and cry. But one thing I am sure of is that few of us leaders, did not share in the looting of the treasury," he asserted.

The PDP leader revealed that "some of the so-called factories built by the last administration were scraps, some of which were 15 years old before they were imported into the country as new".

He, therefore, warned the new political appointees that public service required selfless service, which demanded that they subjugated their personal or parochial interests to the overriding imperatives of broader goals and national interest.

Anenih said leadership must be seen as a trust, such that the leader, who is the trustee, has no privileges, no special rights and no benefits, but only the obligation to carry out the mandate of the people. He stressed that a good leader must possess an unusual vision of society, whilst displaying modesty at all times.

While emphasising the role of teamwork among the political appointees, Anenih harped on the need for government to obey court decisions, saying that the rule of law was the bedrock of democracy.

"It is important to emphasise that there can be no democracy without the rule of law - the habit is all too familiar in Nigeria that government and officials have high tendency of behaving as if they are above the laws of the land, thereby disregarding or disobeying court rulings. Such tendencies must be curbed in the interest of our society. There should not be dual application of the law," he said.

Anenih said Edo people deserve a better deal than they have had, and expressed confidence in the ability of the Osunbor administration to perform, saying that never again would the people of the state entertain excuses for failure.

Osunbor promised that the dividends of his administration would be people-oriented and visible so that the government could enjoy the confidence of the people. He pledged to establish a due process office to ensure competitive bidding for contracts.

The theme of the retreat is "Leading Excellence in Democratic Governance."

Nigeria author wins Booker honour

Chinua Achebe is the most translated African author
Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has won the Man Booker International Prize in honour of his literary career.
Achebe is best known for his 1958 debut novel Things Fall Apart, which sold more than 10 million copies.

The 76-year-old, who was paralysed from the waist down after a car accident in 1990, beat writers including Ian McEwan and Salman Rushdie to the honour.

The £60,000 prize, awarded every two years, will be presented to Achebe at a ceremony in Oxford on 28 June.

'Remarkable man'

Achebe was called "the father of modern African literature" by writer Nadine Gordimer, one of the judges, who added that he is "integral to world literature".

He's what I think writers should be

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

"What African literature set about to do was to broaden the conception of literature in the world - to include Africa, which wasn't there," Achebe told the BBC.

"In the stories we tell, it is intended to help us solve the problem of this failure that has overtaken the early sense of joy and happiness when Africans became independent, received their self-determination."

Another judge, academic Elaine Showalter, said Achebe had "inaugurated the modern African novel".

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who recently won the Orange Prize for Fiction, said of Achebe: "He is a remarkable man. The writer and the man. He's what I think writers should be."

Others who have been nominated for the prize, which recognises a living writer for their body of work, included Doris Lessing, Philip Roth, Peter Carey and Margaret Atwood.

The recipient of the first honour - awarded in 2005 - was Albanian writer Ismail Kadare.

Why govt is unable to create new jobs, by minister
From Olayinka Collins, Abuja
BARELY six days to the hand-over date, the failure of the Federal Government to create seven million jobs in the last eight years as promised has been attributed to the on-going reform in the public service and slow progress in the power sector reform, among other factors.

Speaking with reporters at his valedictory press briefing yesterday in Abuja, Minister of Labour, Hassan Lawal, said the task of providing jobs was beyond the exclusive jurisdiction of government alone, extending to the private sector. He added that the ministry is currently partnering with private and social partners with a view to expanding job opportunities.

He said: "We have taken steps to annex new and emerging job opportunities within Nigeria's reforming environment. Although all these strategies have been put in place, the job generation target of NEEDS has not been feasible due to several sectoral problems.

"Among these are the on-going public sector reforms, slow progress in the power sector reforms, social and environmental factors, and growing political dis-equilibrium in certain parts of the country. We are collaborating with states and local governments to facilitate the creation of a sizeable number of jobs annually."

In order to make available jobs count, Lawal stated that steps had been taken to extend the frontiers of skills acquisition centres, improve trade testing units and building a more synergistic relationship with National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and other agencies set up to address poverty-related issues.

He added that the National Electronic Labour Exchange was not only designed to provide employment information but to checkmate unfair labour practices such as casualisation and contract employment.

Lawal has also called on Labour movement and civil society groups hell-bent on observing a sit-at-home on May 28 and 29 to shelve the idea and instead explore the judicial alternative.

The labour minister also tasked federal workers to be patient and accept the April take-off date for the 15 per cent salary increment.

Meanwhile, government and workers' representatives are due to meet today to try and reach a common position on the vexed issue of the upward pay adjustment.

But in a reaction, spokesman of the Joint Negotiation Council, Fidelis Edeh, who is also the National President of the Nigerian Civil Service Union (NCSU), told The Guardian yesterday that the workers would insist on January as take-off date for the 15 per cent pay rise.

Excellent point; you definitely have the right to express the level of your despisedness of this new administration, but you must also think broadly and understand what is currently going on in Nigeria
What administration?Yar'adua's?Is it May 29th yet?An election that international observers lamented was fraught with irregularities, voter disenfranchisement, murder, banditry? An election in which INEC and Maurice Iwu;showed to the world that their biased stance was a result of some interested person in seeing that his will was carried out by fiat!

I have said it before~the emergence of Yar'adua as the presidential candidate of PDP was a seriously flawed process! The so called elections which they say led to his emergence is another story,we need not rehash again. He reminds of Shagari~inspiring, dull, docile, rustic and it's a shameful again that we not only cannot conduct an accurate fair census,we have proven indeed to the whole world that we are a nation beset by fraud,in love with fraud!
PDP is synonymous with roguery and banditry and this was clearly manifest during the last elections~ballot papers were dumped in S/Africa and still Yar'adua constitutionally did not meet the provisions of winning the elections!
For myself hes not my leader~period!I would not be part of any whitewashing or illegality~the premise that he should be supported is very wrong~rather admonished and castigated for going along with this charade!
