Sports / Hiking In Nigeria by Liesel81(f): 6:08pm On Jul 04, 2020
I am happy to see that there are quite a number of groups offering organized hikes in Nigeria. They are so many good hiking routes in Nigeria and I was able to visit some. Great thing about hiking is it can be absolutely free if you know the route but maybe a lot easier with a guide.

Why do I hike ? I get my exercise in whilst being surrounded by nature and getting amazing views of my surrounding

This my experience at katampe extension

Travel / Lets Meet Under The Rock - Lets Meet In Abeokuta by Liesel81(f): 12:53pm On Apr 28, 2020
In the Yoruba language Abeokuta means under the rock. This naming dates to back to a time when the Egba people hid under rock to save themselves from their enemies during tribal wars. In November 2019 we spent 2 days in Abeokuta exploring the city. We visited 5 sites join us as we explore.

Travel / Welcome To Eko - Gateway Of My Dreams by Liesel81(f): 11:56am On Apr 13, 2020
Mega cities have a way of presenting more opportunities. I like many people made the move to Lagos 19 years ago and now looking back I would make the same decision again. How about you ? What relocation or travel plan have you made in the past? if given the opportunity would you make the same decision again?

Travel / Museums In Nigeria by Liesel81(f): 1:15pm On Apr 02, 2020
Let’s talk about Museums in Nigeria. Museums in Nigeria are managed by the National Commission of Museums and Monuments. Personally, I like visiting museum when I am in a new place because it gives me insight into the people their history, their culture and to some degree insight into their current affairs.

The NCMM (National Commission of Museums and Monuments) manages over 50 outlets across Nigeria according to their website (http://ncmm.gov.ng/about-us/) . You can find all the museums listed on the website unfortunately not all of them can be found via google maps. Alongside the national museums the NCMM also cares for 65 recognized monuments and two UNESCO world heritage sites – Osun Osogbo Grove and Sukur Landscape Adamawa

On my trip through Nigeria I visited about 14 institutions, some of them are privately owned. My review of each museum is linked to the listings. Museums listed in order of personal preference
Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Abeokuta (https:///maps/pTKV74HAgVnWxaiy6)
Kaduna National Museum (https:///maps/RHAviSN19qoS8eSVA)
National War Museum Umuahia (https:///maps/B7GFZRtWT5mE76Kd7)
Jos Museum and Zoo ( https:///maps/gsMohxVPE5iwgNvL8)
National Museum, Calabar (https:///maps/N3ZHkXfL5oLadix9A)
National Museum, Benin City (https:///maps/L7rUJUoPTVkBiurK7)
Gidan Makama Museum (https:///maps/QqDWK8ZKD3kX9eES7)
Gidan Dan Hausa Museum and Kano State Cultural Centre ( https:///maps/FhLFTWkjXZ7RNmn96)
Kuti Heritage Museum ( https:///maps/Ln1yhSAoADYEFy2K6)
National Museum of Unity Ibadan (https:///maps/kmCjjQfDER3ccexcA)
Igboukwu Museum (https:///maps/itZRd2MiBwDxBUJa8)
Badagry Heritage Museum (https:///maps/FKm8vPnffBM5hHZu9)
National Museum of Unity Enugu (https:///maps/3J5CZEqZudjjevZRA)
Museum of Colonial History (https:///maps/fTXX1wcc16kfawJaA)

Two things I noticed visiting these institutions is that a lot of them do not allow visitors take pictures, but they would benefit from the publicity as must people aren’t even aware that these museums exist and are fully functional. The second is that quite a number of them do not have the infrastructure that would allow people tour the museum on their own and in their own pace, which makes it sometimes difficult to process all the information from the tour guide. It’s a very affordable form of entertainment for children from a certain age and adults. The most expensive being the Presidential library at 3000 per person and the cheapest the Jos museum at 50 per person.

The next time you are in or around the following cities : Aba, Abakaliki, Abeokuta, Akure, Asaba, Bauchi, Benin, Birnin Kudu, Calabar, Damaturu, Enugu, Esie, Hong, Ibadan, Oko, Igbo-Ukwu, Ile-Ife, Ilorin, Jos, Kanta, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Koko, Lafia, Lagos, Lokoja, Maiduguri, Makurdi, Minna, Nok, Ogbomosho, Oron, Osogbo, Owerri, Owo, Oyo, Port-Harcourt, Sokoto, Sukur, Umuahia, Uyo, Yenagoa and Yola, take some time out to visit the museum there.

Travel / Welcome To A Place Of Firsts – Oyo Nigeria by Liesel81(f): 12:14pm On Apr 02, 2020
What can you expect of Oyo? Oyo is in the south west geopolitical region in Nigeria. It has a population of over 5 million people predominately of the Yoruba tribe. The landmass is over 28,000 square kilometers. The landscape is made up of lots of hard formed rocks and semi shaped dome hills.

Taking a drive through the old parts of Ibadan allows you see firsthand how hilly the city is and how houses are built around rocks.

I think the first thing that comes to mind for me when I think of Oyo is the University of Ibadan. Maybe it’s because two of my siblings studied in UI as it is fondly called. Or perhaps because it is one of the oldest and most prestigious institution of education in Nigeria.

University of Ibadan was founded in 1948 as a college of the university of London. It became an autonomous institution in 1962. When I learnt I would visit this institution during one of its convocation ceremonies, my excitement doubled because it meant I would also experience a lot of traditional music.

I have called Oyo a place of firsts because alongside the University of Ibadan, it is also the home to one of the first TV stations in Africa NTA Ibadan, one of the first Skyscraper Cocoa house and the oldest stadium in Nigeria formerly known as Liberty Stadium now known as Obafemi Awolowo Stadium. The first African Bishop a formal Slave boy Samuel Ajayi Crowther who translated the bible to Yoruba Language is from Oyo.

A visit to Oyo affords you interactions with the Yoruba tradition (markets, festivals, music, food), history of education in Nigeria and beautiful landscapes starting from forests, rivers, rock formations and elevation.

During my 3 days in Oyo I was able to visit the following places
Ibadan
✓ Mapo Hall
✓ Bowers Tower
✓ National Museum of Unity
✓ Zoological Garden UI (Zoo)
✓ Agodi park/Gardens

Iseyin
✓ Ado Awaye suspended lake
✓ Asoke Weavers

Oyo
✓ Alaafin's Palace Oyo

Other recommended places that we didn’t make it to in Oyo are - Igbetti hills, IITA forest, Old Oyo National Park. Some prominent festivals in Oyo include Beere festival the ceremonial cutting and bringing home of thatch grass from fields,. The festival is held in February. Sango, Oke Ibadan, Egungun, Igunnuko, Gelede, Yemoja and New yam festival are also festivals to look out for.

Do enjoy your visit of Oyo – yours truly Liesel81
