For a project of this magnitude, you don't discover major issues like 40–50m deep peat and route problems after construction has started. Those are things detailed feasibility studies, geotechnical investigations, and EIA should have identified before committing trillions of public funds. Route changes may be necessary, but they also raise questions about the quality of the initial planning.

For a project of this scale, accountability starts with the planning stage. You cannot commit trillions to a coastal highway and only later discover major soil and environmental challenges. If those issues were foreseeable, then the question is: who approved a plan without adequate studies? Public funds require proper due diligence, not adjustments after the fact.

MY INPUT: For a project as large and sensitive as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, detailed technical and environmental studies should ideally have been completed before construction began. Issues like deep peat, coastal soil conditions, waterways, and environmental impacts are not unexpected in a coastal project and should form part of the initial planning.

Changing the route later may be an engineering adjustment, but it also raises questions about whether the original feasibility studies were detailed enough before committing public resources.

I can't blame this minister. It is not easy to work with someone who doesn't care about governance. It is either you leave or you continue defending mediocrity. The minister wouldn't want to leave, because, a lot of advantages come with his position. The best is to keep defending.
