Agriculture, transport, healthcare, and housing have all felt the cuts. The government presents this as bold economic reform designed to save money and stabilize the country’s finances. But the reality for everyday Nigerians paints a very different picture: these so-called reforms are hurting more than helping. 👀 What Nigerians Are Actually Experiencing Here’s how the cuts are hitting people: Agriculture: Fertilizers, seeds, and farm chemicals have become more expensive. Farmers pass these costs to consumers, which means groceries are pricier than ever. 🍚 Transport: Subsidies for public transportation are gone. Bus and taxi fares have surged, making commuting a struggle for many families. 🚌 Healthcare: Government support for clinics and hospitals has shrunk. Countries like the United States, the UK, and Canada approach it differently: United States: Cuts subsidies gradually and pairs them with programs like Medicaid and SNAP. Audits and oversight ensure funds are used properly. United Kingdom: Implements reforms with careful planning, clear reporting, and safety nets for the vulnerable. Canada: Phases out subsidies slowly, protecting low-income communities and ensuring energy remains affordable. In these countries, transparency and accountability are central. Citizens know where the money goes, and safeguards exist to protect those most in need. ⚠️ Transparency and Corruption: Nigeria’s Weak Spot This is where Nigeria struggles: Unclear Accounting: Money saved from subsidy removals often disappears without explanation. Few believed Lagos could rise above Nigeria’s harsh economic climate at the time. But over the next eight years, the state began to transform under his watch — visibly in some areas, unevenly in others. Tinubu’s administration focused on boosting internal revenue and modernizing infrastructure, leaving behind a legacy both praised and criticized. 👉 Economic Reform and Revenue Growth One of the most celebrated feats of Tinubu’s tenure was the sharp rise in Lagos’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). When he assumed office, the state reportedly earned about ₦14 billion annually. By 2007, that figure had soared to roughly ₦83 billion. The surge was the product of improved tax systems, tighter financial controls, and stronger fiscal management. This financial independence paid off when, in 2004, the federal government withheld local government allocations due to political disagreements. Lagos continued to pay workers and fund projects without federal aid — a rare display of financial resilience. Still, the revenue success came at a price. Traders, artisans, and small business owners complained about multiple taxes and the aggressive collection methods employed by tax officers. For many struggling citizens, the burden of levies eroded their small profits and deepened daily hardship. 👉 Infrastructure Drive and Uneven Progress Tinubu’s administration rolled out several road and urban development projects, especially in central districts. The Lekki–Epe Expressway, major drainage channels, streetlights, and early transportation reforms gave Lagos a facelift. Agencies like LAWMA were revived to improve waste management and sanitation. For residents of Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Surulere, the changes were visible — smoother roads, better traffic flow, rising property values. But on the outskirts — Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, and others — progress came slowly. Many roads remained impassable, and schools and hospitals were still underfunded. The development story, though loud, didn’t echo evenly across the state. 👉 The People’s Experience Tinubu’s economic policies did stimulate job creation, especially through construction and private-sector partnerships. Money circulated more freely, and Lagos cemented its reputation as Nigeria’s commercial heartbeat. However, the prosperity was uneven. Middle- and upper-income residents gained more from the expanding economy, while low-income earners struggled with rising taxes, rent, and transport costs. Public education and healthcare saw some improvement but still lagged behind population growth, leaving many Lagosians dependent on expensive private options. 👉 Borrowing and Transparency Concerns To finance large-scale projects, Lagos borrowed heavily during Tinubu’s administration. By 2007, the state’s debt had climbed to between ₦50 and ₦60 billion — moderate relative to its growing revenue base. Supporters countered that the loans were a strategic gamble — necessary for building the infrastructure that powers Lagos’s economy today. The state’s revenue model became a blueprint for others across Nigeria. Successor administrations — Fashola, Ambode, and Sanwo-Olu — all built on the framework he established. Yet, not all Lagosians shared in that pride. For many, the supposed success story felt distant from everyday life. While elites and investors saw progress, the average citizen often experienced only higher living costs and tougher business conditions. 👉 Conclusion Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s years as governor marked a defining chapter in Lagos’s development journey. His administration revolutionized revenue collection, spurred urban renewal, and positioned Lagos as a financial powerhouse. But the gains were not evenly spread. The same policies that empowered the state also tightened economic pressure on ordinary citizens. Tinubu’s era was both transformative and unequal — a period of bold innovation shadowed by growing disparity. In the end, his economic legacy stands as a paradox: a model of fiscal reform that built a stronger Lagos, but not necessarily a fairer one. |

ANTHRAX Anthrax is a serious bacterial infection that mainly affects animals, but it can also be transmitted to humans. Anthrax is not contagious, which means you can’t catch it from another person like the cold or flu. HOW DO PEOPLE GET INFECTED WITH ANTHRAX? People get infected with anthrax when spores get into the body. When anthrax spores get inside the body, they can be “activated.” The bacteria can then multiply, spread out in the body, produce toxins, and cause severe illness. This can happen when people breathe in spores, eat food or drink water contaminated with spores, or get spores in a cut or scrape in the skin. Certain activities can also increase a person’s chances of getting infected. Such activities include: -Working with infected animals or animal products -Eating raw or undercooked meat from infected animals Here are a few things you should do: 1. Contact relevant authorities: Notify the local health department or veterinary services about the outbreak as soon as possible. They will be best equipped to handle the situation and provide necessary guidance. 2. Be cautious and take preventive measures: If you come into contact with an infected animal or its products (such as meat or hide), take precautions such as wearing protective gloves and clothing. Avoid consuming products from sick animals and be wary of the livestock & wild animals you consume or come in contact with. 3. Seek medical attention if symptoms appear: If you develop symptoms like skin sores, fever, fatigue, or difficulty breathing, seek medical help immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for a better prognosis. 4. Vaccination options: Anthrax vaccines are available for animals, and some countries have vaccination programs in place. Consult with local veterinary services to inquire about vaccination options for livestock and pets.
